Definitely one of the greatest and most entertaining MK games. Amazing Konquest mode. Great fatalities, music, arenas, stage transitions, death traps, mini games Chess and Puzzle kombats and Hara Kiris. Mileena, Jade and Tanya had the greatest costumes in Deception. This game introduced three unique, yet so criminally underrated characters: Ashrah, Havik and Hotaru.
I miss konquest mode from deception. It felt like it really helped flesh out the world. I appreciate all the work that goes into their story modes now but the exploration and the fact that they basically gave us several games in one really made this feel special.
With SF6 having a whole World Tour single-player mode filled with side missions, lore characters, and mini games there's no excuse for MK1 not to have just as much kontent if not more. It will be 100gb to download at launch after all so a konquest mode or somethin similar to a Shaolin Monks 2 has to take up most of that space.
@@DonYoGi8331hey it’s December and guess what they didn’t do any of that and instead gave us characters JC that will automate win a match for us does that sound like deception open world to you ? No ?
I poured hours into the Konquest mode looking for Liu Kang. I had the Game Cube version so I had Goro and Shao Khan and they were pretty fun. My personal favorites to use in chess kombat.😁 This one scratched an itch that had been there since the 95 movie for me. Getting to explore and get lost in the MK worlds.
@@DonCritic That would be pretty sweet. I mean if they're dead set on the story mode being a movie then I'll take chess kombat as a consolation prize. 😁

This game took the deadly alliance formula and perfected it. 2 fatalities for each character, returning classic characters, Onaga as the villain, konquest mode has the gamer traverse through out each realm. Time jumps in Konquest mode led to gold treasure chests that unlocked new characters and alternative customes. Also the select character music is a banger
My all-time favorite MK game ever. I played it for 2 years straight. Endless amount of things to do. The Conquest mode alone took me forever to complete.

I liked this game way more than I thought I would. I remember freshman year of college, me and my roommate always rushing back to the dorm after class to hop on to Konquest to find everything. GameFAQ’s was invaluable.
I really do not see why people dislike this game and Shujinko so much. this game and the Konquest mode were amazing Shujinko is a great character and fun to play as imo.
It was just that he was a clone of Shinnok, who is literally a copy of all character moves. Shujinko personality was pretty much just that he was betrayed, and that was it. His story was pointless since MK Armageddon made Shujinko’s Deception story non-canon since he was captured in Outworld before fighting Onaga, forcing Scorpion to fight Onaga and defeat Onaga alone.
@Unchainedful Armageddon makes no retcon to Shujinko’s victory over Onaga in Deception. In both of the characters bio’s for Armageddon, it states that Shujinko defeated Onaga by shattering the six Kamidogu, rendering Onaga vulnerable and Nightwolf ensnared his soul. Only later in the Netherrealm did Shinnok then find Onaga’s soul and revive him, offering him an alliance for the forthcoming Armageddon. Shujinko, after defeating Onaga, was tricked by Mileena into going to Outworld, who he thought was Kitana, and she imprisoned him in the dungeons. There’s no mention of Scorpion.
@@Unchainedful I wouldn't say a copy of Shinnok, but at the time, not well-received as a poor man's version of Liu Kang's role did the fusion dance with Shang Tsung's shapeshifting ability. Which sounds crazy now that you realize their hatred for each other, but I wish NRS rewatches Kill Bill someday & says "Let's build up Shujinko like this with one of our Kombat characters" 😅
When it came to mk deceptions overall, favorite 3D era when I was just fifteen years old. After deadly alliance I had to know how it concluded… I was not disappointed and I was terrified when Onaga just walked right in. That feeling of “ oh my god… who can even slay this guy if not these guys?!! “ this was pure desperation and they fn nailed it. Jon quest mode was just joy for it answered many questions for me, but for me if I had just admit enjoying new characters it have to be Havok cause of how he just gives off a unsettling feeling that he will just do what he damn well anything he wants. Armageddon sadly disappointed me. I felt nothing for that conclusion, and worse off it was also midways last chance before bankruptcy.
Yeah they did, that’s what makes them so great to look back. But it’s also a lot longer and bigger progress today with advancements in graphics, AI and mechanics. Creating a Konquest mode to stand up to modern standards, would take years!
my absolute favorite thing about Deception was Konquest mode. We would always hear and have art for the Realms but I couldn't IMAGINE it. Even in Shaolin Monk it's hard to know for certain what it is like to be inside these realms. Although, with Konquest mode, it gave me EVERYTHING I wanted when it came to questions I had about each realm from civilians, where each main character lived, the atmosphere, etc… AND THE SIDE QUESTS!!!! i could rave about it forever !!
Mannn I remember that intro cutscene being one of the coolest things I had ever seen as a kid, especially coming from the sprites of MK3. Would love to see MK return to the semi-open world Konquest mode along with the Krypt, chess and other fun modes. Deception had so much content (kontent?) and while I may be blinded by nostalgia some, I remember so much of that content being great! I remember running around punching random people in Konquet mode and just getting completely lost in the world and lore, ah good times
Chess Kombat really is a whole new game on it own. I'd do unhealthy things that I am not allowed to discuss if it meant the return of chess kombat in a modern title
I love Deception so much. My teenhood was just playing Deception and watching the "MK Conquest" over and over again for what felt like a decade. I remember in MKX and 11 the characters kept making such a big deal about Shinnoks amulet and I was like "SO THAT'S WHAT THAT IS!?" Up until that point it had just been "that random thing Quan Chi had on his belt in the Deception Intro Cinamatic." I also never knew any other MK fans and so this intro cinamatic was something that was exclusive to me and my little love of the game, so to read this comment section and see so many others who loved it is a little bit of a gift to my past self. Wow, what an era.
By far my favorite Mortal Kombat game. I absolutely sucked at it when it first came out but still managed to beat it. I bust the game out every once in a while. I love puzzle and chess kombat and really wish they would bring them back
The "open" world of Deception needs to return. Same with Wizard Chess, Mortal Kombat AND the Tetris Mortal Kombat. Hara Kiri ALSO needs to return. Absolutely awesome.
Deception was great because it was the first time the “good guys “ didnt win in mortal kombat . There was also a evil far greater then what he had seen with the previous villians .
Thank you for making this. Beautifully done. Love this game. I sucked at the trilogy arcade games but when i finally had a console i played this game with my brother such fond memories
Did anyone else feel like the MK:DA, MKD, and MKA mirrored the release of MK1, MK2, and UMK3/MKT respectively by almost 10 years? It was like the next octave of the same idea in the next dimension of gaming, if that makes sense. MKDA felt like MK1 all over again; it revived the series and lore and aesthetic, etc. MK Deception fixed and rounded out the gameplay and added even more to what the first one built; it felt like the peak of this generation of games, as did MK2. MKA was like our Trilogy; it had everything and had a ton of compromise because of it lol. Just my thoughts! AWESOME content!
That’s a great way to look at it. Would’ve been awesome to see NetherRealm tackle a “Trilogy/Armageddon” game again with everyone back. Thanks a lot for watching my series! Glad to hear you’re enjoying it!
I've had so much fun playing Konquest when I was 10 years old, even though I didn't understand English at all (It's not my native language) I just liked running around and exploring the world. Btw, the character design here is amazing, especially Kitana's, Mileena's, and Ermac's outfits, these are better than their outfits from recent MKs in my opinion.

Many people actually miss the fact that right before Raiden detonated his attack, Quan chi runs off possibly surviving the blast but losing tge amulet in the process
I say the same thing, there's no excuse for them not to follow that pattern. I know they've seen World Tour mode and hopefully it reminded Ed Boon of how good konquest mode was.
Playing the Konquest mode as we speak. I have friends that come over and when I told them I had MKD on my emulator we've all been playing that a lot (we played it alot as kids). I've actually been tasked with playing the konquest mode to unlock more guys lol. I'm using old fashioned cheat websites. this is the most nostalgic MK for me.
This game was what made me a hardcore MK fan for life. The extreme roster, stage transitions and trans style combos made my kid self feel so badass with movie like fights. I would sell a kidney for a remaster.
@@illmental2622 No, Quan Chi did not escape. He got killed by Raiden's self-destruct and Onaga revived him and them at his personal slaves. Onaga used the Amulet to re-animate the dead Earthrealm Warriors and he put them in the Prison stage.
@@illmental2622 I didn't read MK Wiki when I was on the Midway forum board in 2004. MKD came out, John Vogel officially confirmed it on the Midway board. He confirmed it and then Wiki put it.
Easily my favorite and overall childhood game I loved playing the game as Scorpion (easily my favorite design alongside with Shredder-Zero) and being traumatized by the fatalities yes as a kid I was squeamish of lots of gore
I feel like mk’s story has lost its charm that DA or deception had. The ambiences, the boldness etc. Killing off those main characters were so good adding to tension to the story. After Armageddon mk has become more comical and inconsistent level of powers between the characters. Also the ambience, it was more darker and had medieval settings in DA and deception.
Fun fact the sub zero in mortal kombat deceiption in konquest mode was actually the grandfather of bi han and lui kang ??? Anyways mortal kombat 11 says that and also mortal Kombat deceiption konquest mode was time before the brothers of subzero and kung lao and much more
I think its a shame that the Trilogy is often thought of as MKDA-MKD-MKA, simply because of the gameplay style. The actual storyline begins with MK4 and concludes with MKD. MKA is just Trilogy 2, and I consider that story to be like a bonus chapter. If they eventually do an HD port, or a full-fledged remake, I really hope that MK4 is included. Otherwise, the entire impotus for MKDA will be lost on newer fans, and MKA is irrelevant to the Dragon King Trilogy. Sidebar: if they DID make that brand new game, I hope that when they get to the Armageddon portion of the story, the characters whove died up to that point don't just magically come back. They had to do that in MKA, because it was a standalone game, but you could absolutely keep the parts with characters like Sektor and Daegon, while cutting the parts that had characters like Onaga, Quan Chi, and Shujinko, who were canonically dead when Deception concluded.
You got it backwards. Armageddon played a HUGE role in the mortal Kombat universe, and played a pivotal plot in the brand new timeline and reboot of the entire MK franchise. Mortal Kombat Deception, though I love the game, didn’t play too much of a role after Armageddon. Onaga was defeated by Scorpion but wasn’t killed, so he healed his wounds later in Armageddon, making the entire story of Deception pointless. You can literally skip Deception and the story wouldn’t have changed. As for the trilogy thing, it goes like this: Mortal Kombat 1-4 are known as the arcade era, Mortal Kombat DA-Arm are known as 3D Era, Mortal Kombat 9-1 are known as the Netherealm Era.
God I spent hundreds of hours playing this as a kid. When you showed clips of the konquest mode grabbing the koins in the open world I heard the sound they make in my head 🥲 even today the open world holds up. What I’d give to have a remastered deception!!
Honestly I feel like it’s a bit SUS that NRS always focuses on only the 2D era characters and costumes when they have a huge catalogue of 3D era costumes and characters they can use as well…like why has our boy the Dragon king 🐉 for example been sidelined for 3 games in a row it makes no sense to me. Like I respect the hard work they put for making the MK games but it's a nitpick I have with NRS.
@@_zaldivar2590 Like I know Onaga and Havik are strong returns but I also want to see the sons of Argus and Shujinko like I know there are folks who are not fond of them but my argument is there stories are solid enough to be worth expanding upon and there designs and personalities can easily be updated for modern MK.
To be fair some of the 3Ds era costume did make a return for example : mileena second costume from mk9 is a reference to her primary costume in this game, Quan chi mk9 look is literally just his 3d era costume and we can't forget the mk deception sub zero returning in mk 11
Seems like they've wisened up since the 30th anniversary. John Tobias musta knocked some sense back into Ed Boon because he said this particular era will be represented heavily in MK1. Which most likely means we'll see Onaga again🔥🐲

I say the same thing, there's no excuse for them not to follow that pattern. I know they've seen World Tour mode and hopefully it reminded Ed Boon of how good konquest mode was.
Deception will always be my favorite it just has so much content and i grew up with it
Thanks for all the work you put into this series. These videos have been awesome to watch. 👍
Thank you KnightTrax!! 🙌
Sindel did the meanest backflip
I played this recently again this time on xbox360 man the memories 😢
Good times 🙂
The secrets were the absolute best. Loved the story mode.
Deadly Alliance, Deception and Armageddon are the best trilogy in the entire series.
for me, it was all about having Liu Kang playable in the 3d era and seeing Jade and Ermac make a comeback. Konquest was the best!
Agreed! Ermac and Jade are amazing in this game
Ideologically, I should hate Hotaru, but i did like his character a lot.
One Of My Favorite Mortal Kombat Games.
Just got myself an sealed copy of the xbox port...my god i cant say enough how much i love this game ❤
Fine addition to your collection!
amazing video on the greatest game ever made…thankyou for this!
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching! 🙏
Have a great time dude!
This game was what made me a hardcore MK fan for life. The extreme roster, stage transitions and trans style combos made my kid self feel so badass with movie like fights. I would sell a kidney for a remaster.
Quan Chi escaped through a portal in the intro cutscene.
Omg you’re absolutely right, in all my years of watching that intro, I never saw this 😱
@@DonCritic very good explanation though! nice to see an older game get some recognition
@@illmental2622 No, Quan Chi did not escape. He got killed by Raiden's self-destruct and Onaga revived him and them at his personal slaves. Onaga used the Amulet to re-animate the dead Earthrealm Warriors and he put them in the Prison stage.
@@TheODLawson23 mortal kombat wiki explains it very well, as did the MKD comic.
@@illmental2622 I didn't read MK Wiki when I was on the Midway forum board in 2004. MKD came out, John Vogel officially confirmed it on the Midway board. He confirmed it and then Wiki put it.
One of the Best. Thank you Ed Boon for this Game.
Really enjoyed the easter eggs in conquest
Yeah it’s filled with so many!
Hey man your videos are incredible thank you so much for sharing this with us the community is so rich and the hype is building like crazy! 🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thanks so much!
Yo Don! About to watch. Keep this up man, these vids are legendary.
Thank you Joe 🙏
Konquest had some big ass maps fr
Yeah they were epic!
@@DonCriticif all that was crammed in PS2 era imagine what they could cram into current-gen consoles🤯
Easily my favorite and overall childhood game I loved playing the game as Scorpion (easily my favorite design alongside with Shredder-Zero) and being traumatized by the fatalities yes as a kid I was squeamish of lots of gore
Great memories!
Another excellent video in the series keep it up
These are just pure quality
Thanks so much!
That Girls Gone Wild Jade spot always kills me 😂
😂
I feel like mk’s story has lost its charm that DA or deception had. The ambiences, the boldness etc. Killing off those main characters were so good adding to tension to the story. After Armageddon mk has become more comical and inconsistent level of powers between the characters. Also the ambience, it was more darker and had medieval settings in DA and deception.
When John Tobias left, all the good ideas left. He was responsible. Good thing he did work on the new one. Can't wait!
Deception was peak Mileena costume design that and 9
Neatherrealm should really bring back conquest mode for modern systems. Theres actually enough power to really flesh out the gameplay.
That would be awesome!
5:50 that kick through the wall was to cool
I can’t wait for the next mortal kombat video. I used to play it so much on my grandma’s Mexican arcade which had a bunch of games. So fun
Quan Chi was Alive because he telported before the Blast hit him and Shujinko was alive too
Deadly Alliance and Deception were the absolute best. Better than now even, in my opinion, XL or 11
God I spent hundreds of hours playing this as a kid. When you showed clips of the konquest mode grabbing the koins in the open world I heard the sound they make in my head 🥲 even today the open world holds up. What I’d give to have a remastered deception!!
Glad I could bring back some good memories! 🙂
Hopefully we see Onaga again!
I think we will see a lot of them in MK 1.
