In this video I will try out DJI's new flagship one-hand gimbal, the RS2 (or Ronin S2), and try to pair it with RED's latest cinema camera, the KOMODO 6K. Both are light and compact power houses by themselves, but how will they work together? Well let's find out!

Criminally underrated channel!
Thanks mate 🤙
Dude I’ve been binge watching your channel for a couple of hours now, it is insanely underrated. Amazing stuff. I have a few Sony FX3’s but have my first Komodo on the way now, can’t wait to check it out.
Thanks for the kind words Lee!
I'm glad this channel exists. Been obsessed with the Komodo lately and wanting to upgrade from my mirrorless cam. (Sony A7iii) BMPCC6K is so much cheaper but just love the colors, gamma curve, global shutter and form factor for gimbals so much more out of the Komodo.
Happy to hear that! So you are in the same boat as me a couple of months ago. Come on and journey along! 🤙🤙🤙
Joey! You've done it again! amazing video explaining how the RS2 and Komodo is like PB&J, they go well together and makes everyone happy!
Thanks so much 👊 happy you enjoyed this vid
WOHOOOO! Always a happy to receive your notification of new video!
Yay! Thank you! Glad you are enjoying it :)
Perfect video, literally first combo i wondered about when all the reviews dropped!
Thanks mate :) glad you liked it
Truly next level content Joey, love it. Keep it coming!
🤙🤙🤙🎉 thanks much!
Hell yeah man you’re bringing the heat in this vid! Every video keeps getting better and better from you
Thanks a million Ryan! :)
Great channel man🙏 On point, quality content, no bullshit. And your shooting your videos with the EVA1! Love that camera so much.
Thanks so much :) 🤙🤙🤙
Fantastic video, informative, short, to the point. Just what I was searching for. It earned you my subscription ;)
Thanks so much Jaro!
Killer work as always Joey! Just killer. We are loving this combo as well. This with our Segway is perfect for capturing footage for our upcoming skateboarding film ;) 🔥
Thanks Matt! Segway + Gimbal is the ultimate stabilisation
@@Joey_Helms sure is! And much easier on the feet and back! 😂
Loved this video! Crazy high quality production!
😀🤜🎉🤛
your reviews are pure gold. You deserve more subs, dude!
Thanks mate! Appreciate it!
daaaaaaaaaaaaamn bro! dope!!!!!!!!! congrats! thank you for spreading some gold info to the comunnity!
Looks like a 🔥 combination with the Red and RS2. Keep making videos! 👍
Thanks a lot Sheldon! Will do my best ;)
just got the komodo, this is exactly her video I was looking for. A+
Congrats and thanks a ton :)
what SDI Cable are you using to connect your SmallHD Display. ?
Excellent video dude!
Great combination! Ordered the RS2 combo immediately after it was available. Unfortunately it will take some time for the thing to arrive here in Germany. Great video, good information. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks so much! Hope it will arrive soon in der Heimat ;)
New to the channel! Exactly what I was looking for thank you ❗️🎬
Wonderful to hear and welcome!
Great vid! 🙌 Great choices of gear! 👍
Thanks so much 🤙
Your content is amazing keep it with the good work
Thanks! More coming soon :)
Super Johannes, tolle Combo, tolles Video!! 1896 Daumen!!
Ha danke Carsten :):) ⚽
The review you give at the very end is insightful not only because of what you’re saying but also showing how the gimbal tracks you. It did a much better job when you were at a slight jog because when you were walking slowly you could feel it ramp up in speed and then slow down which created this jerking motion. I wish it was able to figure out how to do a consistent steady speed with active track
Yeah still trying to figure out how it acts in certain situation and how predictive it can be :)
This damn channel alone is the reason I’m about to drop a lot of cash 😩😩😩. Keep doing your thing bro! Love the content
Same here man!
😂😂 tell me about it. It's all my 2020 travel money invested in gear now ;)
@@Joey_Helms what kind of VND filter would you recommend for the Komodo??
I am using the canon drop-in VND which is convenient. It's solid enough :)
@@Joey_Helms can I friend request you on Facebook! I have so many more questions about your lovely camera and setup
Love your videos!! Do you have a shopping list, a lot of things to remember, Thanks. Keep up the great work
Thanks a lot! No list per se ha, but there will be more videos coming where I talk about some basics I use :)
Glad i found this channel mate
Thanks :)
Just came across today. Wow
Thanks for the incredible content 👍👍👍
Thanks so much 🤙🤙
very good info to know thanks alot! keep posting im now subscribed
Thanks a million
I have been waiting and waiting for someone to add one of those fine-tune knobs for adjusting the cheese plate. It's a standard feature on steadicams and glidecams.
Finally right?
This video is everything I wanted to know about this setup.
Happy to hear 🤙
great buy, set up was very easy, Awesome!
Well, your video convinced me. Just bout a pro package. Thank you for the great information.
Really interesting...
Would like to hear more about balance and menu option explanations.
Thank you! Useful info... at least for me :) Liked, subscribed!
Thanks so much Alexander
great review! amazing in what golden gear era we are living right now! its like a candyshop! also are you from germany or whats the accent? good job! youve got a new subscriber!
Totally agree and thanks a mill for the kind words and sub. Und stimmt ;)
absolutely stellar video, as always. really happy I subbed this channel. hey, what cage is that you're using, I like the slim and lightweight setup with channels for support rails! thanks for making these vids, man!!
Thanks a lot! 🤙
Don't use a cage at all. Just GDU Timmy Rips, now I also use the GDU rod handle on the left and the red Komodo handle on the right. In this set up it's the rod from the RS2 for the focus motor.
Thanks, Joey - great video. Subbed.
Thanks a ton! 🤙
great useful infos there. fantastic !
Glad it was helpful!
This is Very well done!
🤙🤙🤙
been wondering all this time watching ur videos, what actually you do to ur footage ? it look so damn good!
keep uploading!
Thanks a ton! This video was special given I had friends helping me shoot it with their Dragon-X, 1DX, and S5 ;)
Nice detailed video!
🤙🤙🤙
my new favorite channel...behind AlexTech
Thanks a mill Robert!
Hey Joey, great review, keep it going, I love your RED Komodo coverage, it helps me through the phase where I'm thinking of ordering one.
One question though, can you please make a little review about the SmallHD Focus Pro you are using in this video?
I want to buy the whole kit but I want to know if it is worth the money.
Thanks a ton Fabian! I will soon talk about the FocusPro in an upcoming upload. I think my biggest challenge with it is the resolution frankly which makes it hard to focus at times. Definitely explore some options out there :)
@@Joey_Helms Thanks man, looking forward to it. I'm already used to my SmallHD focus, but the posibility of controling the komodo with the screen is very nice thing that the Focus Pro has.
It only sucks that you need two cables for the monitor, SDI and Control cable.
Yeah REDControl is dope and convenient! Especially when flying it on a gimbal. But that's also where two cables are annoying 😂
Great review as usual!. Considering getting RS2 for my Komodo… so far been handheld or on sticks… with all the options (DJI 3d focus, Komodo auto focus, Tilta nucleus nano, etc) what setup would you recommend? Seems to be a lot of routes and now a little intimidated haha…I have a lot of Canon photo glass w AF option (24-105f4L, 50mm f1.2L, 24mm 1.4ii L, etc) but also some older Canon manual FD that I prefer w the Komodo. What route would you recommend for setting up a rig? I also like the look of the Tilta advanced ring grip. TIA!
Supiii ....bin begeistert ...sehr schöne Aufnahmen
Dankeeeeeeee! :)
love this review !
Boooyaaa!
@@Joey_Helms I’m so excited by this combo! Getting my RS2 this week and thinking about to purchase this Komodo. I always dreamt about having a Red cam but it was to expensive for my work revenues. With this one it could be the key to enter into the red world.
That's exciting!!! Congrats! Bet you will have a blast creating and learning!
Excellent review sir
Make more videos on rs2 &komodo
Im big fan of u from india.
Thanks so much Ajay! More from this combo coming in my next review (about the Tokina lens) on Friday! 🤙
Damn son you make quality videos
Thanks 🙏
Pretty absurd request/question but would this support a Red Dragon-X 6k? This is my new favorite channel, keep up the great content!
Thanks so much Steve :) We have not tried it. I reckon if you strip it down, power it externally, and have a small lens on it should certainly be able to carry it. Though I don't think it will be a great experience, while with the Komodo it is really fun.
Hey couple inquires 1. What are you using to add the counter weights to the bottom on the Komodo and 2. What are you using to attract the monitor on the side of the gimbal?
Awesome stuff man! You have pushed me over edge on the Komodo and am placing my preorder! How is the Fujinon mounted to the Komodo, is Duclos mod?
Yup! They sell directly. www.ducloslenses.com/products/mk-r
Congrats and welcome to the club, Edward :) Let Red know hahah - Yes, this is the MK Duclos mode. I dig it. Hope I can test out the 18-55 soon.
@@Joey_Helms That would be amazing to see the 18-55 in action on the Komodo, it’s a shame Fujifilm didn’t make them with user interchangeable mounts
I still can’t balance mine with cine lenses .. lots to learn! Thanks for the great content
Those generally need some counterweights, have you tried that? J
Hey bro can you give me the link for the IPAD HOLDER YOU HAVE THERE, ON THE SIDE OF THE GIMBAL THANKS!.
Can you do a video on setting up the Komodo with the Raven Eye,. Thanks, I'm confused . i purchased the BM SDI to HDMI converter and SDi to Sdi cable but don't have the other port that says usb power on the Converter. Thanks
Great job
Cheers 🤙
Great channel
Cheers Marvin
Thank you for this video. Have you tried Crane 3s? If yes which one does have better tracking system?
That was sick ! 1+ sub
Thanks so much Nick!
Hey Joey, im using the Zeiss CP2 Lenses and they aren know for having a bit stiffer focus ring. So can you tell me if the focus motor has enough power for these kind of lenses? I’m using the nucleus N with a vmount batter which gives me 14.8V ... The normal Powerbank option with 5V is not strong enough.
Great content! What is the rail system attachment you have for the focus? Nice and minimal!
Nice!!!
Thanks!
Hello. Great review! Any idea if raven eye is capable of sending signal to more than one device?
batman : they do background plate for something like :
1 realtime vfx (LED walls)
2 greenscreen (cars, bikes...)
3 CG objects in real environment with reflexions
Hello Joey. Can you say me if there is a difference between the tokina 11-20 cine and the tokina 11-20 cf ? Only the housing ?
Great content Joey. Do you recommend this gimbal or any other for short film/feature purposes? I recently purchased Komodo and my only reason is to shoot my scripts. The response will be appreciated it.
Thanks
Congrats on your Komodo and i think it absolutely does. Tilta is coming out with two handle solutions for the RS2 making it more convenient for longer use.
Do I need any adapters or plates to connect the Komodo? Or does it connect right out of the box? Thank you for your help!
hello. great review.
Can you let us know more about the settings in the control app ?
Shiftness, deadband etc ?
Thanks a lot! Maybe I can do a deep dive early next year.
When using the RoninRS2....how well does the Komoda software work when not using active track?
Nice video! But can you please explain how set up the ravenEye at the Komodo.
Thanks! The key component as mentioned is the SDI to HDMI converter (link in description). You power it via the usb ports on the RS2. Lmk if you specific questions.
Hey! Respec to you and this nice movie above the new RS2. I want to ask wich Monitor holder do you use? Im looking for one for my Atomos Ninja V in combination with my Z-Cam E2. I had try it with the smallrig magic arm 11" and the secound arm in the 1/4" thread but it wasn't stable anytime.
I want to wich one you use, cause it looks realy stable.
Thx for your recommendation
Thanks a ton! Really appreciate it!
That's the PolarPro arm -> amzn.to/3n7anRI
While I didn't have an issue sliding it on the RS2 Nato rail another person had. So it may be hit and miss. Just a heads-up.
hi there, thanks for sharing so cool videos, i just dowloaded your footage tests , and noticed in some shots a lot of grain in low light situations , so what would you tell me about this , highly appreciated you feedback , and also one shot - when u are shooting leaves backlight - i used stabilization , and it just didnot work to remove handheld shaking, so what about this topic ? RED is saying and promoting that its so easy in post production to stibilize shots , but in reality it didnot work, thanks again and waiting for your feedback , it should be mentioned again that you are doing so cool content and work , thanks
Can you elaborate on how to connect raveneye to Komodo? Is the sdi to hdmi converter a necessary accessory? thanks
Epic video! Thanks - Are you using the small hd focus pro with Komodo control? What cine lens options do you recommend for Komodo?
Cheers Daniel! Yup I do :) If you want to go wide, for sure the Tokina 11-20 is absolute killer. And then to complete the set you may want to look into the DZO Pictor Zooms or Fujinon MKs (Duclos Mod). Also those lenses I either own or have tested and a good time with.
@@Joey_Helms thanks for the response 👊🏼 Any thoughts on if I should choose LCD or OLED Small HD Focus Pro??? By the way keep up the excellent work on your UA-cam channel. You’ll be well on your way to 1M subs in no time.
Thanks a million 🤙 I believe the OLED one has a higher res so in retrospect that may be the better one but no personal experience.
What's up man..love the review! We're you able to auto calibrate the focus motor with your cine-lens? If yes,how did you do it? I saw the option pop up once but can't get it again.
Thanks Damian! There is no calibration possible (according to the manual) when using the built in wheel. If you use the old focus wheel that goes on the NATO rail there you can still do the calibration for hard stops. Sucks. I know.
@@Joey_Helms ahh makes sense..thanks for the response!
I have a question for you man - what accessories do you need to hold that 15mm rod in place on the Komodo?
Have read other reviews that basically say the RS2 is more trouble then its worth for Komodo users. Also looks like according to your review cinema lenses and their size and weight are some of the main reasons. In light of this if you were def going to be using cinema lenses with a Komodo would Ronin's MX gimbal be a better fit ? Your review and any input would be much appreciated @joeyhelms
Great content buddy, love the Komodo very much.. why not just use a steady can?
Thanks Henry! Steady cam is great but much harder to travel with ;)
@@Joey_Helms true, i believe IFOOTAGE makes a steady can which is like 20 inches, pretty small, but I got ya. 🤜🏾🤛🏻
There seems to be no way to calibrate the follow focus motor to my prime lenses, has anyone managed this yet?
Can you guys please show me how you connected the SDI/HDMI to the raven eye and camera?
Can you power your SDI micro-converter off the Ronin and also plug the 3D focus and focus motor in all at the same time? It seems like there is one missing power port to be able to run the micro-converter with the full setup. So I'm wondering if, unless you have another tap somewhere on the camera to power something if the Komodo's lack of HDMI makes it a difficult combo to utilize the full RS2 system.
I am still waiting for the 3D focus but by the looks it is actually chained between gimbal and focus motor so it doesn't add the need for an additional port.
Wait you can use autofocus lenses and have it work? you don't need USB? can you tell me how?
What counter weights do you use to balance the komodo?
Would the RS2 work with the FX6 going into under slung ? Thanks
Hay Joey, Thanks so much for this video it's great! I'm struggling to set up my Komodo in the same way you have it so you can do active tracking using the black magic and raven eye setup. Are you able to send though a picture of how you set up your cables? I would also love to use the love to use the focus motor at the same time but I think that might be impossible with only 3 usb out of the ronin. Any help would be amazing, thanks so so much!
Hay Joey, I've sorted it worked it out in the end..
hey man super sweet vid! Quick question- How are you attaching your SDI to HDMI converter box to the bottom of the raven eye box? Is is Velcro or some sort of mount. Asking as someone with literally the exact same set up as you.
Thanks man! And yeah, velcro everything 😂
@@Joey_Helms You da man! Sub'd and liked. Keep it up!
At this time what is the best gimbal for the komodo up to 4k.
How do you attach the black magic SDI to the RavenEye. I do not see Velcro on it. Do you tape it?
Velcro it is ;) just didn't have it on early on
Hey awesome video, what was the co. you got the ipad holder from, thanks.
Thanks a ton! That's just a cheap one off Amazon. Key is a locking mechanism rather than a spring IMO.
Hey Joey! What batteries are you using on Komodo?
Hey ich seh mir deine Videos schon länger an. :) kann es sein das du Deutscher o.ä bist? Find ich mega das du im Ausland lebst. 👍🏻 Weiter so :)
Danke danke und stimmt ;)
I came for the Komodo review but stayed for the RS2. Super excited about both. How were you pulling focus while using the falcon eyes talking to camera?
Glad you liked it :) aaaaand... Autofocus with the Sigma 18-35 art ;)
@@Joey_Helms and the Fujinons come in RF these days or what??
It's the ducloslens RF mod ;)
Have a question. How did you attach micro converter to raven eye? Doublesided tape? Thanks! It was so informative that i bought the converter right after watching this video. Super great contents!
With a Velcro sticker. ;)
@@Joey_Helms thanks!
Which accessory are you using to mount the monitor to the gimbal?
Hey how did you make sdi convertor works? Please make a tutorial
Hello buddy! This video is pure gold ❤️ can u kindly tell whether red Komodo can be mounted on ronin-SC or not.
Thanks a ton! Unfortunately I have not tried on the SC, sorry
@@Joey_Helms cool buddy..no issue. Good day 👍
This is fire content! What lens did you use with your Komodo???
Thanks so much. Check the top left corner ;)
What left corner? Haha the shot when you were zoomed in on the building crisp image!
I have an overlay on every shot which camera and lens it was shot on ;)
Okay I saw it thank you! I think I was better off not knowing, the price is so high! What would you say another lens that gives the same look as the 50-135 2.9 lens? I own the gh5 and I have the cannon mount metabones
Hey Joey - is it a sketchy swap throwing on the Polar Pro Ronin S mount onto the RS2? Like what you did there
Work perfectly for me but I also heard that other people have problems.
Maybe a noob question but how does he stay in focus while walking on the stairs in the first shot ? Since it’s a manual camera or was RED’s autofocus on?
The Komodo comes with continuous AF :)
@@Joey_Helms damn I didn’t expect it to be that good with a contrast based autofocus...
I thought I missed something
@@dariomadau it has phase detection
how did you balance it with the large camera batteries?
