Cheap(ish) now, has the Hoya ‘New Guinea Ghost’ lived up to the hype?

  • Just a couple of years back, the Hoya nicholsoniae 'New Guinea Ghost' was one of the most expensive "it" plants on the market. $400 for a single node cutting was the norm.
    Now they are affordable, if not exactly cheap. Check out my video with a mature plant, along with repotting, trellising, growth and care tips, and we'll discuss s one year update.

    I ordered a NGG somewhat recently and it arrived in poor conditions. I chopped off all the roots to a stub and water propped and was amazed with how resilient it is 😦 it grew back amazingly. Can’t wait for mine to eventually look like yours 🙏🏻 😊

    Have never seen a video highlighting the most thirsty plants vs least thirsty plants. Of course they would be ones in your collection, but I would be very interested. I did discover on my own that the NNG was as you describe. I moved mine into a glazed pot to keep from drying it past the no return point.

    I love my NGG. I was lucky enough that a plant group I'm in in my city did a Christmas party, and one of the other members brought several NGG plants for everyone. I was so thrilled. It's my second favorite Hoya after my Krimson Queen, which was my very first Hoya.

    • @soberplantguy

    I've only seen NGG a couple of times locally and they were sad looking plants that didn't tempt me and didn't make me want to add them to my wishlist. I may have to rethink that after seeing yours. Very pretty!! Though the plants at all of the Lowe's in my area are generally crap, I did find a $20 Krimson Princess with wide leaves and a $17 Sp Aff Burtoniae, both of which I love. In fact, the Krimson Princess, though very common, might be my favorite plant. It's huge and gorgeous and -- after suffering plant abuse at Lowe's -- could probably endure the apocalypse without dropping a leaf. I have many that are a lot harder to find and cost me a lot more, but that one is still special in my eyes.

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  3 місяці тому +2

      Many of my favorite plants are more common, for sure. However pathetic your Lowe’s is, ours has to be ten times worse 😳

    • @amymarshall1829
      @amymarshall1829 3 місяці тому +2

      @@soberplantguy Oh, I don't know. I'd be willing to back the crap level of the three Lowe's nearest to me against most any others. The Sp Aff Burtoniae was so sodden with water that -- despite my putting it in a southeast window -- it was still soaking wet three weeks after I bought it. I was trying to give it time to acclimate before I repotted it, but I couldn't take it anymore and just went ahead and repotted. I figured that the stress of repotting had to be better than the stress of drowning. I watch other UA-camrs finding all kinds of amazing plants at their local Lowe's and wonder what kind of magical land they live in.

    • @ofhismercy109
      @ofhismercy109 3 місяці тому +1

      @amymarshall1829 when I get one that is soaking wet like that, and how long it's been that wet is an unknown, I always pop it out of the pot and place the whole thing on an old folded up towel, then into a plastic bin, like a bus tub or a kitty litter tray. You can wick out the water, and even switch out for a dry towel a couple times, and save a plant, sometimes.

    NGGs are still pretty popular here in MN. Just saw a plant in a 3" pot on sale for $60 (4/5 leaves). Still too expensive for me. I see them in local Hoya club sales, every so often, for a good price, but they get snatched up right quick! I have very limited space, so I'm going to stick with my small-leaf bebes.

      Oh, good question. If I'm really trying to get growth out of them, especially if they're small, they're staying in (also considering that I can give them perfect lighting in there). Others, that were basically wintering in there, are slowly coming out. I'll finally be putting the plant porch together now that it has warmed up here in Iowa. Right now it's perfect for props and seedlings, that's for sure. Cheers ☺

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  2 місяці тому

      WHAT??? That's sooo annoying. They prop as easily as any plant I have. I made seven or eight 3" pots out of the vine I trimmed. All but one went straight into a soil mix, one into perlite filled with water because it was quite floppy. All have rooted extremely well and are absolutely gorgeous.
      When the prices become sane, or you know someone with one, don't hesitate to get a one node, leaf plant. And don't underwater it while it's very young ☺

    • @soberplantguy
      @soberplantguy  3 місяці тому

      Yes, indeed! In fact, if you try to wrap the vine clockwise, and clip it, if it can't correct itself, it'll just kill off that vine and start another, most likely. Good question.
