The video went on and on and finally I developed an idea myself and now I found the only video on the internet showing how to make one of these..this is a priceless video because even google doesn't have this info.
Thank you for the comment. I really hope Google will pick it up some day. I remember myself trying to find any information on how to make one of these. I couldn't find anything online.
I've been working on making these for about 8 months now. The info about building them is so scarce that I had to reverse engineer from videos of some of the well known makers. When you want to move to glass, I recommend "first surface mirror". Regular mirror works okay but the design is not crisp. Also, color film for windows works well instead of sharpie. From what I can glean from the guys that are selling them for 350 a piece, they use a red diode laser to etch the design into the mirror. I use a Dremmel for now but the laser would really be the cleanest. Etching cream might also work but I haven't tried that yet. Putting a dichroic cube at the end really ties the whole thing together. I resent that I cannot get these guys to share any info about some of the other questions I have about them but hopefully with some more sleuthing I can get the answers. They do not like sharing their secrets.
Oh, thank you for that cube suggestion! I have one (too big for this project) and love staring at it. Bet it makes these things really pop! Amazon does have sugar-cubed sized ones, so that's going in my cart for this project!
You are the MVP for making this video, like, no one shows how to make one, they just sell them for over 200 usd and almost no one has that money, i wanna trip real quick and cheap and not spend two weeks worth of food in my 3rd world country. 😅❤ Thank you so much.
I had a stinking suspicion that this was how you did it but i couldn't find any videos on youtube to back it up. This is almost like proprietary knowledge hahah. Thanks!
@@my-pixels You have other methods of achieving this effect or better? Ive been fascinated in kaleidoscopes with complex patterns similar to david sugich's for an example. Ive been researching here and there getting ready to build one soon.
@@outoftheblue6587 David's kaleidoscopes are made of glass and I haven't tried to make my own yet. But at least we know the principles now. The only thing that's left is to figure out how to make those stipes by removing the mirror coating. Most liekely chemically.
@my-pixels acetone maybe? Or etching with acid? You're a Legend by the way, thank you for this. Can I ask, is the small end closed off? Or do you leave it open?
@@kwbond918Thank you! I also think there may be some kind of acid involved. The small end is open. Actually, the shape of that end opening is what generates the central 'star' shape. Experiment with it! Also, they add a coloured ball at the tail end to make the star even more beautiful.
Thank you so much for sharing this tutorial! I just made mine but I didn't get the same effects as your video, nor the star at the end. Could it have been the length and size of the large and small opening? I made it with the following measurements: 18cm long, larger opening with 6cm and smaller opening with 2cm.
Thank you for the comment! You have to use a flashlight to illuminate your kaleidoscope from outside. Just point the light randomly and you should see all the wonderful effects. That's how these things work. Hope this helps! PS Just in case the measurements of mine are: Length: 23cm, Sides: 4cm and 1cm.
This is great! So much more interesting than the standard 3-mirror kaleidoscope. Thanks for posting the details. Question: Why do you say the thinner sheets take more time to assemble?
But I have developed another idea using two side reflective mirror film and color filter. That will take more time but makes beautiful patterns like expensive kaleidoscope. anyway This video was amazing.. I challenge this is the most underrated video
The size of the mirrors affect the 'deepness' of the 3D visuals the kaleidoscope creates. You can of course experiment with the sizes and see it for yourself.
helloooooo,my question if ,is the step for acetone for removing the mirror layer necessary?i mean what is the so called removing ?you have opposed the mirror after removing strips of protective paper,so i guess its alright exposed?
The point of removing the glue layer is to get to the mirror coating to be able to remove it with acetone. You could probably just try to remove both the glue and the mirror coating with acetone, but I'm not sure if it's going to work well as I haven't tried it.
@@my-pixels never thought you would reply so fast damn lol, thank you , i want to make a kaleidoscope for my friend, and been watching your video for whole night
The other end may be open but you can add a small gemstone to it. Even a plastic one will create a beautiful central sphere like in this video ua-cam.com/users/shortsO4PWIJrqWhc
Yes, you need to remove the protective paper first, them get rid of the glue base and then strip the mirror coating using acetone. Just like in the video.

This is great! So much more interesting than the standard 3-mirror kaleidoscope. Thanks for posting the details. Question: Why do you say the thinner sheets take more time to assemble?

The finished kaleidoscope's small hole should face to black colour to achieve the effects in video?
can i use acrylic marker?
Would you be able to cover the kaleidoscope with stained glass or resin/plexiglass for a more finished appearance?
Of course :) I've been doing that for a while now ua-cam.com/video/TyVAPWWtdgs/v-deo.html
Are the size of mirrors essential to use the same shapes that you use in the video? And if not, will it not be like the effects in the end of video?
Cannot i just cover the colours?Or if I do,the effects will not be represented
The size of the mirrors affect the 'deepness' of the 3D visuals the kaleidoscope creates. You can of course experiment with the sizes and see it for yourself.

What did you use on the smaller end of it, or are both ends open?
Both ends are open in this example.

I'm wondering, why do you use tape and then use colors?
The tape is not needed if the ink sticks to the surface.

The other end may be open but you can add a small gemstone to it. Even a plastic one will create a beautiful central sphere like in this video ua-cam.com/users/shortsO4PWIJrqWhc
what kind of mirror do you use?
It's made out of a 6" x 9" plastic mirror sheet with the thickness of 0.8mm.
Anyone have suggestions for using LED strip lights? And viewable from the outside?
There's a lot of pretty cool patents out there that you can read and make..

Coloque uma luz em qualquer lugar e veja como fica.
I'm trying to remove the adhesive from the cut out strips, but the foil doesn't come off. Isn't it supposed to come off using the acetone?

Honestly, I don't know. I haven't tried other solvents. You could try and scratch through the mirror coating, maybe.
