- Classic Game Room reviews SONIC ADVENTURE for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 PS3. This download version of the 1999 Sega Dreamcast version has smoother gameplay thanks to more powerful hardware, more vibrant visuals and improved responsiveness. Basically the same game as the Dreamcast version, Sonic Adventure allows players to play as six characters including Sonic, Amy Rose, Knuckles and Tails. This CGR review of Sonic Adventure on Xbox 360 (and PS3) has gameplay from Sonic Adventure showing Sonic Adventure game play in HD..

I love the music on the first stage. I still remember the feeling of awe I had when playing this on Dreamcast for the first time.
They couldn't make this game widescreen? They could do it with the Banjo Kazooie and Marvel Vs Capcom 2 rereleases.

Sonic Adventure may have the best intro on a game of its genre ever made... heck, that dramatic sequence even impresses to this day.
Downloaded this game from the PSN store as soon as it was released, been playing it for the last few days non-stop! It really is quite an emotional game. The character's relationships with eachother in this game is just, amazing. And seeing Tails and Amy finally stand up for themselves without Sonic around was really a tearful moment! Sonic himself seems to have more of a character in this game, too. He seems more aware of what's happening, and likes an explanation to what's going on.
I just love how he does videos everyday.
This is something I work into my daily routine, I click on UA-cam, go to subscriptions and check out what new awesome video Mark has in store for us.
Sonic Adventure. Shenmue. Power Stone. Toy Commander. SF Alpha 3. DOA. Crazy Taxi. Jet Set Radio. Quake 3 Arena. Soul Calibur.
What a time.
it actually looks much better on the dreamcast. there are plenty of side by side comparisons on youtube.
I love the flying in the sky bit.
This is the first video game I ever played. Awesome review
"Was there a 32x addon for the Xbox 360?"
Yes, the HD DVD Player
Cool nice review!!!
@FastTquick
i agree, i would of even accepted it if they stretched it wide screen... as long as it was wide screen. On the PS3 version, they added some boarder on it and it is just eye straining to me.
aaah i loved this game so much as a kid! i need to dl this nowww
this game is so BEAST! I remember playing this on Dreamcast. I still have the strategy guide! HELL YEAH!
I loved playing this game on gamecube when I was little definitely picking it up
im getting this today finally havent played it in years
i luv this game i grew up playing this game this will always be my fav sonic game
Is the chao garden system exactly the same as the DC? or does it have elements of the improved GC system?
Loved this game when I was little.
best version is the original dreamcast ver.
Nah. It's the gamecube version.
gamecube version is too shiney. the game gear games were fun, but the dreamcast version still had the classic feel to it
Yeah, the original version has an entirely diffident lighting engine designed specifically for that game.
damien cromwell I like the shiny look
Just because of the worse lightning on the Gamecube version (which is a huge problem for the devs, considering the fact that the Gamecube is more powerful) doesn't mean it plays better. They both play the same.
@RetroAli93 No, there was no lag per se. It's just that if the game drops down to lower framerate like 30 vs. 60, you obviously get to wait a bit longer to see your input being processed.
More vibrant colours are hardware setup issue. If Dreamcast is played with a VGA or SCART-RGB cable, the colours are at least as saturated as X360 would give them, obviously not through Composite or S-Video which cannot reproduce those colours.
ooh thanks for the info, i'll download it now :D
I had the director's cut version of this on the Gamecube, It still is one of my favorites.
This game is very nostalgic for me. I remember when i was a kid, i would go to my friend's house and they had this game, and i would watch them play it :D
@RetroAli93 And oh, the Dreamcast controller did contain a few nifties, i liked it a lot. It was equally well suited to small and large hands due to all controls being close to the grip area edge, and the analog stick is just something. All analog controls use guided suspension and, instead of sliding contact potis, they use a magnet in the stick/levers and one Hall effect magnetic field sensor per lever and 4 under the stick, and a guide suspension which makes 8 major directions easier to hit.
when you download the DX add on does that include the medal challenges from the gamecube version?
is it possible to remove the purple bars whilst keeping the HD?
ah the memories, great game!
After watching 3 classic game room videos, I feel like part of my life is missing because I am yet to play Cosmic Carnage
I grew up with this game and its my favorite sonic game
I remember the GameCube version of Sonic adventures. i had it as a kid and i played it the whole time.
Got my dreamcast in 98 and still play this game.
This was the first game i beat as a kid.
Good times =)
I just downloaded this today, and its nice to replay one of my favorite games of all time. I hope Sonic Adventure 2 makes an appearance, also Shenmue.
had this game on GC Loved it !!!!
Dreamcast version is my favorite! :)
straight away the graphics are more sharper and full of colour, only downside is the huge borders at the side but it doesn't seem to be that intrusive though, i don't know if you have heard but sega are also releasing crazy taxi for the XBL and PSN for download soon, great review!
@Iceeman234 is this game exactly the same as the dreamcast version? i mean the campaign nad the game itself.
I don't believe it, you must be the only reviewer on the planet that doesn't trash the Sonic Adventure I'm already a fan of your show and value your opinion on games so I don't know what to say, except this review is very uplifting for me well, in terms of Sonic that is
sonic adventure dx on the gamecube WAS my childhood, and sonic heroes
it's coming out this autumn
@HUYI1 Sweet. Are there any other sega classics heading to xbox live I should know about?
@dashwarts they do. It's an add-on.
Still have this game on GC along with SA2
@Goldstar127 I totally agree. Plus, this game brings back a touch of nostalgia for some Sonic fans, especially me, since I had this game on the Dreamcast.
this was uploaded on my birthday
man memories (tears)
Cosmic Carnage with SLIGHTLY enhanced visuals?! YES!
I was pleasantly shocked to see this available at the PSN Store. I took a further look at it and thought, "10$? What a steal!" XD
@aaronjs4 yup but it doesnt have the bonuses that it did have
like the game gear games
but yes its a DX version with less features
Man I love the Sonic Adventure soundtrack.
NOW THAT REAL BRINGS ME GOOD MEMORYS
I'd buy it, but would those blue bars be on the side of the screen the entire time?
my fav. sonic game on dreamcast. has many great action stages :)
there is a gamecube release that is a directors cut and has enhanced graphics. the directors cut lets you play some of the gamegear sonic games
I love how you practically just dropped this review to explain how GREAT the xbox controller is. Oh Gawd! 0:36
This was released in 1999!It's amazing.Dreamcast could take on the PS2 in terms of technical abilities,but it was unlucky...
@victorchapin3 You mean Sonic Adventure 2. Because Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is the Gamecube version.
i just started playing this today again on ps3 i remember when i had this for dreamcast when i was like 9 but anyways i been playing this all day its just as fun as it was on dreamcast
@NeverendingTwilight1 Yeah i got it on the gamecube :D is it the first of the series to sonic adventure battle 2? or is that a completely seperate game?
@TheGuyWhoIsSitting I agree. I think the DX upgrade should have been included in Sonic Adventure for XBLA to begin with and not sold seperately as DLC.
Great review and not one bad beer joke! Next Sega needs too release San Francisco Rush: 2049 on XBLA and PSN.
@J0RD2K7 It only has the Blue boarders if you are playing ona HD TV I noticed.
Wow i definitly need to get this game for my 360 i loved this game and a few of the other older sonic games, hope to see games like sonic adventure 2 and and sonic heros and maybe more sonic games that arent availible in stores to be able to be downloaded on the 360 and ps3
@GeekyMex I agree the music is excellent in this game, I can understand people ripping on the camera and the gameplay but to complain about the music confuses me as it's classic Sonic.
Anyone else notice that tails cannot be controllable in the xbox 360 version but on the dreamcast version? I tested it out and I cannot move tails with the second controller.
The purple bars are only if you are playing in HD. If your playing on an SDTV or on an HDTV without HD cables then it will be full screen.
This and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 are prolly the best sonic games... Old school !
@TrasherPop It's called Sonic Adventure DX: Directors Cut. They also have Sonic Adventure 2 on the Gamecube as well. It's named Sonic Adventure 2:Battle
does it have the big blue boarders on the side when you buy it?
Why is Mark's voice so epic....
Yeah lol, i remember playing that! :D
I need help. I still have my Sega Dreamcast, should I buy the original game or download this from psn? I hear people say one´s better than the other, are they pretty much the same thing?
@boozab99 But you can get the Game Cube version "Sonic Adventure DX" and play it on your Wii!
So what's your theory on why SA1 gets lower critical scores than the other two?
The first time I played this game it was the GameCube version, Sonic Adventure DX and I loved it. And yes I am a fan of the Gamecube controller.
@Chipmunkool the Dreamcast version is the DX version its just a trick to make you pay 1200 points
@mrguycrap Purple bars? Do you mean the BLUE things on the sides?
Mark should review the Gamecube version of Sonic Adventure (DX Directors Cut).
Dreamcast
@Goldstar127 true
if u played castlevania on NES the control is pretty stiff
but if u played SUPER castlevania 4 on snes a HUGE improvement came by which now it very playable
@supersonicfan7 that version was also on pc, besides you can get an addon for this version that is the same thing
@ThePolarpack Yeah, it does. :)
ever since yesterday ive been playing this
I know you compared this port to the Dreamcast original, but how does it compare to the Gamecube port, "Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut"?
these graphics were amazing to me back then
@EntertainZ well personally I never enjoyed the fishing levels because I never quite got how to play them properly. This was before the advent of GameFAQs and the like but by the time that came along I already moved on to bigger and better things.
finally some people who actually recognize this game
@AwesomePossumReviews fair play..
@FleshMan7063 yes, but free online play this time!
hey guys, are the purple bars on both the ps3 and the 360 versions?
Its fun to see something other than Sonic 1 but we never seen Knuckles Chaotix on Xbox Live or PSN
@SuperBlueJeans I heard it is similar to the xbox360 port without the added mini game features that came on the gamecube disc.
when adventure 2 battle comes out for dlc ill be downloading straight away.
@xAfterDawnx Well yea I meant the actual game,I mean its the same thing not really much a difference except more glitches I think on this new port
@VideoGameExplorers there already exists, its called Sonic Adventure 2 Battle.
@IronAndSteelTilDeath Adventure DX has more glitches and a frivolous mission mode. This version of Sonic Adventure already uses the DX graphics.
The one thing I noticed when my bro fired up the demo was that Sonic (and the rest of the cast I assumed) had individual fingers! Have been playing the Dreamcast version this past week, the controls are definitely floaty. Is that something SEGA tweaked in the re-release?
@MrRodQ
I do have an HD TV, ps3 and hdmi cable
@WancakesTheBrave90 Not to mention that the 360 controller has two "clickable" analog sticks that makes it perfect for first and third person shooters. Games like BANG! Gunship Elite and Soldier of Fortune could definitly benefit from two analog sticks.
@JMCDS45 actually there about the same the xbox controller was inspired by the dreamcast controller just look at the a b x an y buttons on both of em
