Classic Game Room presents a CGR Undertow review of Sonic 3D Blast for Sega Saturn developed by Traveller's Tales and published by Sega.
Sonic 3D Blast changed a bit as it migrated from the Genesis (its original home) to the Saturn (where it was called upon to fill in for the cancelled Sonic X-Treme during the Christmas '96 shopping season). The general gameplay remains the same: Crash into bad guys, thus releasing the Flickies trapped within; get these birds to follow you as you traverse an isometric world (kinda like Sonic the Hedgehog's Marble Madness), and deposit them into a goal ring that serves as transport to the next chunk of the level.
This video review features video gameplay footage of Sonic 3D Blast for Sega Saturn and audio commentary from Classic Game Room's TJ.
"Sonic 3D Blast" is actually a very good Sonic game to play, although I actually prefer playing the Sega Genesis version even more. :)
I think load times can be tolerated with a soundtrack that good.
If you're playing this using the standard Saturn controller - and it certainly looks like you are - you're not going to be able to control Sonic very well. Try the game with the 3D pad.
i remember when i played this on sonics mega collection for the first time , i was like seriously??
That is an excellent idea! many times like jumping on a spring or an enemy or power up TV it was often hard to work out what spot the target object was on leading to the indignity of missing it several times before finally hitting it! and the 3D effect of the 3DS would be a great for getting around that problem.
And i thought Sonic was hard to control in the Sonic Adventure games.
This looks terrible.
This is an incredible OST that doesn't get enough attention.
I was so exited when I found Sonic 3D Flickies Island for the Mega Drive but I don't play it too much anymore mainly due to the short comings as pointed out in this video! I thought some of the effects were pretty impressive on the 16 bit system, I've never tried this version.
This is a fun game , if it wasn't a sonic game it may have been liked by more people, the new music is cheesy good, I especially like the tracks from the rusty ruins levels. One major problem it has no save feature. But there are level skip codes.
One of worrst games I played the mechanics and motion gave me motion sickness. I got a bad headache and threw up 20 minutes after playing.
I think It is possible to enjoy this game provided you don't try and play it in the same way as with the 2D Mega Drive games! take it slower and never enter and unknown area out of the spin attack! stuff like that.
Sonic Isometric Blast
The biggest fuck up Sega did with Sonic in the 90's, along with rejecting Sonic Extreme. At least we got the last one with another name, called BUG!!
I always thought that Eggman was more of a nick name due to his classic shape in the old 16 bit games and that his proper name was Dr Ivor Robotnik.
I have Astigmatism so I believe I'm worse off than you. Now that I think about it, what is "stigmatism" anyway? Sounds made up....
Does this game feature... (puts on sunglases) 3D Blast Processing? YEEEAAAHH!!!!
Actually I have compared the 2, the saturn verison does have tighter controls, however, the issue with Sonic 3-D Blast had nothing to do with Control, it was just the overal design of the game. Isometric games just don't work all that well.
isometric games are great but not with platforming. I think thats what you mean.
Honestly, I think this is a pretty underrated gem. It's flawed, sure- but so is every sonic game. It's far from the best, but I enjoy it once and awhile.
You need to play that game with the Saturn 3D controller. It's better with analogue controls.
Meeeh Genesis version had a better sound track. :|
just watching sonic move on this game is annoying
They did, but it was terrible and never finished.
I thought the games was frat for the time
This game made me physically ill.
Yes the controls were super harsh and an isometric perspective maybe wasn't a great choice for game developers, but how dare you talk trash my childhood nostalgia! Loved this gem. Outstanding level designs, polished graphics for the time and fun soundtrack.
man the music in this game is such a huge awesome deal !
the game is really good but the OST makes it even better, one of Saturn's best
Whatever. The is just one of several games to give me motion sickness and headache to the point of throwing up - my wife witnessed it after playing this on the genesis with my kids years ago. I'm sure it only affects certain senstive peolpe- some people get car sick- others don't - opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one, but I should know if I damn threw up or not! Dark Forces by Lucas Arts also had the same affect on me, with turning too quickly in 1st person mode.
oooh i played this game on pc when i was 9!!! it was frustating, bad and on pc version looked a bit better but they rid the 3d version of the bonus stage instead they change into a shitty version of the bonus stage, i never beat this but screw it, it was a failed game.
What my question is, is whats the modding scene for this game on PC?
This was the first video game I ever asked for. I had the Saturn version. I'll admit that Sonic doesn't control very well, but I feel like whoever was playing in this video sucked or wasn't trying. Painful to watch. Later, when I tried the Genesis version on Mega Collection, I was disgusted to find that the music was different and IMO worse. I still have this game.
Sonic 3d blast is my absolute favorite sonic game. I dont get how anyone finds it hard though. Its soooo friggin easy. I've never used the spin dash at all. The saturn version has one of the coolest bonus stages, has the best sonic ost ever, the new effects and better cgi rendered pieces look great.
"-Usually it's a bad sign, a money-making ploy of how dead one system is and how little effort went into taking advantage of whatever shininess the emerging shininess the emerging generation offers."
Wow, that sounds like MOST of the "next gen" games coming out this year...
I personally can see his point on Robotnick/Eggman, cause in the US for awhile SEGA of America kept on flip flopping on the name, but I personally stick with Eggman as it is his original name, and his official name worldwide now.
Are you really sure nobody else on the planet enjoyed it?
I wasn't being sarcastic if that's what you're saying.
I didn't think this was that bad a game. :/
And how hard is it to say either Robotnik or Eggman? You're right either way so any confusion is your own fault. lol
A very avarage game, falls flat on the platforming and floaty controls. But the music(both genesis and saturn) and bosses are very good.
WHAT? An awesome game review not ruined by dereks unbearable nasal voice and asinine commentary? I can't believe it. Bravo...
I've personally only played the Genesis version, and can say at least it's not Sonic Labyrinth for the Sega GameGear lol!
Meh, I don't think Sonic's gameplay belongs in an isometric design, it just doesn't work.
I don't know. I actually enjoyed the hell out of this game back when I was, but a young lad.
I just made a youtube video on this game for the genesis today!
I really enjoyed this game.
Bro It May Not Be The Best Game But I Think Your Over Exaggerating ...
This Sonics Mario 64 adventure on Saturn?
not even close
Bug!, Bug! Too and Croc: Legend of the Gobbos share more in common with Super Mario 64.
so many good memories with this game. I got the pc version and loved that it had the Saturn music. the soundtrack for this game is excellent.
+TheGasMaster4381 That is the version I remember playing myself but we also had it on the saturn, if memory serves me right it was a good port for it's time. Later versions released on the pc are of the genesis version which is really a huge step back.
If I ever get a Saturn I'll pick this up.
Don`t try to do First or second or whatever here.
this guy reminds me of Cave Johnson.
I enjoyed it! :D
Holy crap that's a giant emerald!
I think i can do whatever i want
Worse than 06.
3 people don't what is sarcasm
This game. Oh how I love it.
you and nobody else.
i need attention
why didnt they make an actual 3D saturn sonic game :(
They tried to, but the game just couldn't get out of development, due to various redesigns, office politics and even illness (one of developers had worked so hard on the game, that he got sick, and almost died). The Saturn port Sonic 3D Blast was back-up if Sonic X-treme didn't make it.
Sonic
F......
Love dat intro!
i talked to everyone on the planet, and no one likes sonic 3d blast but you.
You know what would fix sonic 3d blast? Occulus Rift support.
I remember the Genesis version got a 98/100 in the most important videogame magazine of my country back then... bastards
It's a good game desu
Bonus stages are best on the PC.
Actually sega saturn.
Just started this. It's fkn terrible
because Saturn was an amazing system for 2D but it wasn't ready for 3D, they just added some extra chips and modifications a few month before release because they knew PSX was stunning moving 3D, the initial plan was a 2D system. So developing good 3D games for Saturn was hard and painfull because the complicated architecture, plus developers didn't really know how to make a 3D platformer back then, the first successful one was Mario64 who stablished the bases, and it was at the end of 1996.
Not defending the gameplay or anything, but I personally really like the art style. The loop de loops in particular look pretty
There is an updated director's cut version of Sonic 3D Blast/Sonic 3D: Flickies' Island for Steam PC where the game plays a lot better and you can play as Super Sonic after you get all 7 of the Chaos Emeralds, the game has a save/load system, a time attack mode, Tails and Knuckles are found in the Gene Gadget and Panic Puppet levels and so much more.
