Amazing live footage of Lesley Gore telling it like it should be. From the TAMI show 1964. Yoinked off of one of the Lost and Found videos- cinestrike.com/...
Lesley Gore died today, February 16, 2015, of lung cancer. She was just 68. One my high school teachers had gone to school with her. Great lady! May she rest in peace.
This was iconic for its time. Most of the songs were "i want be to be Johnny's girl" but here we had a woman saying she wanted to live her life her way. Iconic for sure
Sacha, ada yg ingin saya katakan.. Tapi lebih baik bukan di ranah publik, karena ini privasi.. Dimana enaknya kita bicara? Untuk kepentingan agama kita bersama. Waffaqakillah. Jika berkenan, jazakillah khairan
Muhammad Abdurrahman I know about islam. I have a degree in islamic studies. Would you like it if I left messages for you offering to teach you feminism?
It was very rare to see a performer singing live and not lip-synching on one of these shows. Lesley Gore had the voice and confidence to sing live, plus at 17 years old she was fearless!
One needs to remember that back when this song was written in 1964, women were still pretty much subservient to men. Many did not work outside the home. I love how Leslie Gore sings this song with so much emotion. She bellows out that women shouldn't and will not be pushed around, that we are whole unto ourselves with opinions and ideas of value. Great song!!
be real, I was a teen in the 60's do you really believe none of us broke up with our boyfriends? I sure did. I was 15. in this song she wants to date other boys too, as I did.
I always had a crush on this beautiful lady. Even though she had a life partner and is no longer in the flesh, my heart will always be with this gorgeous lady. RIP angel !
And her songs are used all the time in movies and tv shows (the New Orleans season of American Horror Story). They are timeless. She was a gay woman at a time when that was not tolerated. Her death is so sad but she spent the last 33 years of her life in a loving relationship not owned by anyone. Lucky brave talented and in charge of her own life.
I was 17 in 1964. She and this song was IT!!! for me. I mean IT!!! Annette died recently. I've lead a good life. I can now die a happy man! I'm ready to go. Thank you!
Giovanna N Thank you -- I'm an old man now at 66 and married for 40+ years. Time to just live in the past. I recommend The TAMI SHOW 1964 (full length) - put it on repeat and let it run in the background non stop.
great singer!! and such a lovely person... she performed here in my town a few years back, and one of my friends from work (my job sponsored Lesley being here) got to know her a little... my friend is a HUGE Lesley Gore fan... anyway, Lesley, when she got home, sent my friend a personal note... thanking her for her hospitality and kindness. very gracious, Lesley is.
In 1964 I had a big crush on her. She was bigger than life. It was a great time for me. As I look at this video 51 years later I still have a crush on her. She was a class act and most beautiful teenager - ever. I'll see her again one day in heaven.
Even though I was 18 in 1966 and listening to Stones, Beatles, Doors, Hendrix, Credence, Santana etc I always liked Leslie Gore's songs, for some reason my favorite is Judy's Turn to Cry, I just listened to You Don't Own Me, Wow I never realized how right on the lyrics were and how appropriate they are for this present day both here and abroad! Join the rest in "Rock 'n' Roll Heaven" Leslie!
Well, got a lot of memories with this. I was 17 at the time and had 1958 Chevy, worked out with a 409, dual quads, and, the first around where I was to use nitrous..... WIBG 990 AM was the only station anyone listened to (Huge Grin) De Greg RM2 USN 1966-1970 Vietnam Class of 1970
Fantastic. It doesn't get any better than this. The Women's Libbers of the '60s criticized her for singing songs where the most important thing was finding a boyfriend; so she responded with this song. A class act all the way and still going strong today.
I wasn't born when this music came out, but what an amazing talent. Reminds me that music is really the one timeless thing we have that all people, regardless of other differences, can be brought together to enjoy!
You're one of the greats, Leslie!!! And, one of my all time favorites. Thank you for your incredible voice, strength, honesty. You will be missed! Sad to see you go. :( RIP
On this day in 1963 {December 22nd} "You Don't Own Me" by Lesley Gore entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; and on January 26th, 1964 it peaked at #2 {for 3 weeks} and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100... Talk about bad timing; the three weeks she was at #2 some new group named the Beatles were at #1 for their first time with "I Want To Hold Hand" {"You Don't Own Me" had jumped from #13 to #2, the Beatles moved from #3 to #1}... Between 1963 and 1967 she had nineteen records make the Top 100; with four reaching the Top 10 and one peaking at #1 {"It's My Party" for two weeks in 1963, and it was also her debut record on the Top 100}... Ms. Gore, born Lesley Sue Goldstein, will celebrate her 68th birthday come next May 2nd...
I love this song!!! I'm 38 years old so this was before my time but am so thankful to come from a family that loves music, so I grew up hearing this. And I'm not sure why, but this morning I woke up with this song in my head so now, I just had to hear it. And I get the chills everytime I hear it! Especially the part "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO...DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO SAY...", GOD I love that part. Great song, sometimes I wish I was a teenager in this era...
I like Grace & G-Eazy's version but it may just be because I'm 18 and like the sound of it more. I was surprised to learn that they weren't the original makers of this song. I was watching the 1988 version of Hairspray (which I was also surprised to learn was the original because I thought the one from a few years ago was the only one) and this song started playing.
Cheyanne Canell Might just be a taste thing. People are into faster stuff when they're younger. It's kind of like sweets, you go off them for a bit and only have it occasionally.
This has 1 million plus views because it is a transcendental experience to see/hear it. The lighting is terrific, the stage setting is awesome 1960s decor, but most of all it's about LESLEY...and how a teenager could go on a stage and sing like that!!!!!!! How amazing that a young teen could put on that kind of mind blowing performance!!! amazing to say the least.
Her story is very inspiring. She came out as a lesbian later in life. I always felt she had a very different and intriguing energy to her. Kind of a masculine/feminine balance. Unique and gorgeous look too. And lovely personality
Sometimes it is not about the best or biggest voice, it is definitely all about the delivery. This is song is perfect example. Dusty does a cover, but in this case, Lesley's version is the best. She sounds as if she is telling that guy off and laying down the law. Love it!
A special time......things will never be the same......when I hear it I fondley remember the greatest time of my life.....God bless Lesley......she still gives me goose pimples...thankyou.
Leslie! We'll miss you. This song was, I believe, written by two men for a male singer. Leslie took it and turned it around in a day when women in this country were not treated as well as they are now. Part of the "changing times".
Brilliant performance by 17 year old Lesley Gore at the famed T.A.M.I show held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium in 1964. Her demeanor and presence is amazing for someone so young. And she nailed it. A song of woman's independence way ahead of it's time and a feminist anthem written by John Madara and David White. She was also a songwriter and nominated, with her brother, Michael, for the songs in "FAME" and, of course, she was born in Brooklyn.
My husband and I saw her several years ago in Rockville, MD, She is still a wonderful entertainer and very nice to chat with. She still has beautiful eyes. Iris
What a stupid comment. Search history for tons of strong powerful women. All of you act like women have been literaaly chained to the floor since Adam and Eve.
It's a pretty powerful song, but what does 'don't tell me I can't go with other boys'? Is she talking about someone so jealous he doesn't let her see any other male person or is she just saying 'let me be able to cheat on you'?
I think the idea is either 1) He's jealous like you said or 2) They're technically not dating exclusively, yet he's telling her she can't meet other men.
What I got was that they weren't dating exclusively, and she was letting him know up front that she can continue to see other guys if she wants. (I.e. Agreeing to go to dinner with you is not agreeing to be your girlfriend.) Then again, could be saying that she's not up for a monogamous relationship, which, if she's being up front about it, is also reasonable. It's only cheating if you deceive the other person about the terms of your relationship.
I bought this hit record when I was a child. I remember my father saying I have good taste. Much later, when Lesley Gore hosted the Gay rights show "In The Life" and after went public about being a Lesbian...I was even more proud of her.
I was 4 when this song came out. I heard many other classic songs from the sixties. One of the best generations that ever lived. And if Kennedy had not been shot, I'm sure we'd have a better world today.

Laura Lidster It was a great time your lives

I agree
Indeed, women taking charge of their lives.

the fact that she made this in 1964 makes this so iconic
It inspired us.
be real, I was a teen in the 60's do you really believe none of us broke up with our boyfriends? I sure did. I was 15. in this song she wants to date other boys too, as I did.
I love these lyrics, but like the song "Girls just want to have fun"; it was written by dudes. Cool, feminist, dudes, lol!
You don't own me
I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display 'cause
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
And don't tell me what to do
Oh, don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
I don't tell you what to say
Oh, don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free

Lesley Gore ~ Maybe I Know (1964) Lyrics
Maybe I know that he's been a cheatin'
Maybe I know that he's been untrue
But what can I do
I hear them whispering when I walk by
He's gonna break her heart and make her cry
I know it's me they're talking about
I bet they all think I'll never find out
Oh but maybe I know that he's been a cheatin'
Maybe I know that he's been untrue but what can I do
my friends are telling me that he's no good
He isn't treating me the way he should
He really loves me that's all I can say
Before my tears fall, I just walk away
Oh but maybe I know that he's been a cheatin'
Maybe I know that he's been untrue
But what can I do
Oh
Deep down inside he loves me
Though he may run around
Deep down inside he loves me
Someday he'll settle down
Oh maybe I know that he's been a cheatin'
Maybe I know that he's been untrue
But what can I do
He really loves me that's all I can say
Before my tears fall, I just walk away
Oh but maybe I know that he's been a cheatin'
Maybe I know that he's been untrue
But what can I do
Oh but maybe I know that he's been a cheatin'
Maybe I know that he's been untrue
But what can I do

Wow, this is live ! Leslie sounds amazing here. I really thought she was lip-syncing like so many of today's artists. Now this is real talent !
I saw Leslie live on NY eve back in the mid 60s - she was absolutely a true talent
Nice that you saw her back then in person. I almost envy you. I grew up during the disco 70's. But, the 50's and 60's are my favorite music genre's.
And her songs are used all the time in movies and tv shows (the New Orleans season of American Horror Story). They are timeless. She was a gay woman at a time when that was not tolerated. Thank you for the music you gave us, and the memories of the 60's

What a terrifically talented young woman. You can tell this is live, not lip-sync-- very spontaneous and real.
One of the most striking performances by a 17 year old - heck, by anyone - with such raw honesty.
