I have nothing to do with blacksmiths work but I enjoy watching people create something out of scrap. It is a work of art
Můžu jen souhlasit, ale já to mám u všeho, mechanika, stroje, obrábění atd.
I finnished metal arts school and this is more like something youd make at first blacksmithing lesson.
А по мне,это занятие от безделья, т.е.собаке делать нечего,она между ног лижет.Так и этот специалист.Не проще бы взять кругляк соответствующего металла и из него сделать хороший нож.
A couple of suggestions:
1-Borax is a flux, not a glue. You can use less and get better results, as there's less risk of getting some trapped in your steel. (Flux lowers the melting point of scale, so it will flow away better.)
2- My blacksmith teacher always made us draw down in the square and then round it afterwards. If you keep hitting it round then you risk creating a void in the centre. (This is how they make seamlessly tubes, or what Americans call DOM.)
Hope this helps.
Keep up the good work mate!
I suggest stop being too comfortable getting his hands so close to the hot steel. That is just arrogant and dangerous.
He is a true viking, let him be!!!
@@gabrielvega1934 absolutely none of this had anything to do with vikings.
Let him cook
@@DeathbringerDragoI would also like to talk about his lack of eyepro staring directly at the grinding wheel.
I can say that the result is not a model of aesthetics but of a formidable efficiency. 👍
Lol yup. I'd love to have a rugged badass knife like this around the cabin with a cool story behind it. No need to worry about scratching it!
Dude, working a wire wheel without ANY eye protection? Ever hear the old saying: “Two is One, and One is None”?
What does it mean that saying?
Totally agree mate, this guy clearly doesn't care about his eyesight 🙄 does some fantastic work though can't fault him on that
Its massively hot, so your glasses are blury because you have to sweat. Its a double mill between safety for eyes or safety for hands and... . Eye protection as glasses is hating and loving at same time. You're also right but that's experience. Better Glasses, but it's hating.^^
Nah he’s too cool for eye protection 😂
.
I don't believe that handle will ever break or fall off....That was cool...
It's not gonna matter what the knives look like because before long he won't have eyes to see them with.
Unless he wears a welding mask
@@samuelbacon9555 I am now picturing someone trying to use a wire wheel with a welding mask on(unless you get the fancy shade changing ones you are pretty much blind to anything less intense than the sun, so the picture is pretty bloody)
Grinding metal with no safety glasses too😂😂
Yeah I just asked if I could have his tools when he's blind. I can't afford the pneumatic hammer
Even chipping slag with no eye protection, it’s happened to me causing a er visit
Nice creative work. But you might want to use a full face shield when welding. That UV light isn't good for your face/skin.
Who cares about skin. I'd say retinas are more important to protect. Maybe he has dark shade eyelids though...
@@livestock9722 UV light = Skin Cancer. Skin cancer = death. Your face isn't the best place to have cancer.
@@fawk501 I've never known or heard of anyone that had face cancer. Eye degradation due to burning retinas - happens all the time.
@@livestock9722 I know someone. Life long welder. Doc said it was more than likely from his line of work and from not wearing a full face shield. There's a reason why they make them. Just passing info to hopefully save anyone from going thru it. Cheers!
I really enjoy your videos. I binge watch yours. This is so much better than that TV show, "Forged in Fire." The process of turning a steel cable into a sharp knife is fascinating and interesting!
Bag sasis
Question: Why isn't this knife really fragile? I'm not a blacksmith, so I'm not speaking from a place of knowledge and would appreciate an answer from someone who knows. But it seems that using a cable would leave many stress lines in the metal that could shatter the blade on impact. Unless you heat it to the point where the metal almost melts, which he didn't do. Maybe I'm missing something here...?
I deleted other comments explaining forge welding.

Hi Mr. Stark !
It's a neat knife and very rustic! .... but I feel like there was so much potential in that shop to do way more. Seems more like a tutorial for the simplest way to make a knife in your garage with almost no tools.
Only seen a couple of his vids. Hear he's supposed to be gd, & I'm not claiming to be some master blacksmith, but let's be real, I'm w/ u on this one: Not particularly impressive. Someone even pointed out the blade already has cracks. If you're gonna post your work, as an expert, setting an example, wherein you eschew basic PPE & exhibit patently unsafe practices, your final product better blow us away, or at least serve to helps us forget the violations we just witnessed lol.
@@ubahfly5409 I think he deliberately ignores eye protection in order to bait us on the comments, thereby promoting the video)
@@daniilmarkovskyj515 lol
I felt the same way when I was watching this… he could’ve melted the cable down and made a better shape and cut it with the angle grinder. I just wasn’t impressed seeing he’s got a huge blacksmith work shop. This was more like a simple knife tutorial in my opinion
Именно так. Мог получиться шедевр ,но вышел полуфабрикат. (С сожалением)
What an inspired use of material! A tool that has a story to tell! It is touching!
Those tinted glasses are for using an Oxy Acetylene torch not welding, they are several shades lighter than what’s required for arc welding. The no safety glasses thing is a bit dumb but could be a mix of age and cultural differences in the lack of PPE. Also his cable was galvanized cable, he might have tried soaking it in vinegar to remove it but clearly when he was welding the ends the residue showed burning galvanized coating after he welded the ends and that’s toxic crap to breathe
I noticed that also when pulling it out of the fire the greenish white flame. In my metal shop class this year I made the mistake of just heating up galvanized steel and had a similar color flame. Not good to breathe in.
ma godetevi il lavoro invece di criticare luomo esprime se stesso attraverso i suoi lavori, apprezza la sua espressione 😅😅😅

Another masterclass in perfection. This too i would use and be proud of.
I would like to see a video of anyone making a knife/sword using only the. Methods that was used to make during Roman soldier times
If im not mistaken, it would just be a lot more efford, keeping the fire warm with bellows and then hammer your steel with a hammer instead of a machine, hardening would be the same as the forging process. Actually, now that I wrote it it seems to be more or less the same 🤷♂, except for the shaping / sharpening, Id expect that to be done with a stone (or skyrim has made me think that)
I have seen a video recently where someone made the steel from ore and then made a blade from that metal. IT was very amazing, work though 😅

I have done plenty of blacksmith work on a survivalist level deep in the northern u.s. living off grid a hundred miles from anything for twenty years so I know this knife is more work than the keyboard blacksmiths realize.
Well done an nice knife 🗡!
"Keyboard blacksmiths".. what a great term. I watch this stuff and then learn additional things from intelligent comments whilst dismissing jackasses whose only "contribution" is criticism. My question is, why not start out with a piece of solid steel to begin with? (provided you have it). I scooped up a 2ft length of galvanized cable probably 2" in diameter that the telephone pole guys left behind last week, w/ no real idea of what to do w/ it. I assume the galvanizing dip needs to be subtracted somehow (maybe in the process) before doing something like this, if the quality of the cable is worth bothering with to begin with, correct?
@@YerBrwnDogAteMyRabit
If you don't mind me answering I'll try and help you out. The client probably wanted a twisted cable knife, not knowing what a blacksmith can/cannot do with wire or metal. The galvanizing layer is hazardous so that can be burnt off in a well ventilated area, outside away from people and animals, then once that has been done you should take that piece of metal to a grinder and see what color sparks it throws off, if the sparks are and orangeish yellow then you can use that metal to make a blade. Hope this answers your questions.

Nice knife from scrap cable. Suggest that you use safety glasses when using the electric wire brush. The wire bristles do break off at speed!
Not just the wire brush bristle. Any metal fragment or piece of grit could cause serious injury, especially one of those little red hot pieces. Good work.
nice work! you got balls using a cut-off wheel with no eye protection.
and without grinder wheel guard in place. That blade will take your head clean off when breaking.
My thoughts exactly. Especially with a cable.
No safety glasses were harmed in the making of this video.
I'm surprised he has both eyes. Getting metal in your eye (or a part of a grinding disk that breaks off) is painful and to be avoided.
