  • Leland Sklar recalls working with legendary former Byrds man, Gene Clark, to create one of Lee's favorite albums... although it wasn't an easy record to make at all! Sklar reveals the disjointed process and a memorable encounter with JOE COCKER that halted recording and almost led to a fight!

I had the good fortune to meet Gene Clark when he was touring with his version of the Byrds. He was a real gentleman and we spoke at length about his records and what he was working on at the time. I think he is the most talented person I've ever met and No Other is a work of art. Leland Sklar's work on it is outstanding.

Cocker is one of my favorite artists. He lived in Santa Barbara during the 80s when I lived there. He was quite a 'mess' in those days. One night, I was playing a gig in the acoustic-based trio I was in and Joe came in with his friend/handler. Joe was wrapping up a 'pub crawl' which had started on State St. and continued about 15 blocks to where we were playing. He had been drinking "Grey Hounds" (vodka/grapefruit juice) in large buckets (about a 10oz. glass) and was sloshed. We invited him to sing a song with us and he agreed. We decided on Feeling Alright (it was one that the 3 of us knew pretty well). I don't know if it was the drinking or if he was simply burned out on the song but about halfway through the 1st verse he just started free-styling the lyrics. I don't know if it was intentional or if he simply blanked out on the lyric. He sang something about a refrigerator and another line about a bus. Funny, sort of. After that, he asked if we knew the song You Don't Know Me. The other guitarist and I didn't know the song but our bass player did and he and Joe decided to do a bass/vocal duet. It was actually very good and we all enjoyed it.
When Joe first joined us 'on stage' (a space in the corner of the room, no elevation) he had set his cocktail down on top of the powered Yamaha mixer. After You Don't Know Me, he reached for the drink but fumbled it and the entire thing spilled into the mixer. Needless to say, that was the end of the evening for music. I don't think Joe ever realized the severity of what had happened with the drink but because the music stopped the place emptied out pretty quick and we went home early that evening. When I got home I opened the mixer up, got out a hair dryer, and cleaned up the liquid in the mixer. We had a spare for the next gig and after a few days we powered the first mixer back up and it worked fine from that point on.
I guess Joe had a thing for ending a gig early. Lol

Went to see Joe Cocker in 1974 I think, in Knoxville TN. He was completely drunk. Tried to sing one song, then tried to take his shoes off but fell on his ass and knocked over the stool he was supposed to sit on to perform. End of concert. Talk about disappointing!

I can see where some different mixing techniques could get a little more oomph out of it but all in all, a great fucking record.

Write 'em down and send them to him. Better yet, write 'em down and find singers and players near you to try them on. Spend a week in Nashville, take your lyric book with you and hit every open mike and studio in town showing players and producers your stuff. The lyrics are useless inside your head. Talent is everywhere. Success is talent + practice + persistence.
