    Compelling, Leland is a walking musical encyclopedia.
    It's also heartwarming to hear his affection for Phil Collins, unjustly one of the most derided artists of all time.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 3 місяці тому +8

      There's only a very small, albeit vocal minority that derides Phil Collins. He's a pretty 'rided' dude. Especially now with the internet when people can hear his romantic ballads, then here his satire on Genesis, then watch him screaming out Suppers Ready, then hear Mama, then find out he's the drummer on a track called 'can utility and the coastliners', then find out he's drummed with Brand X, then find out he's produced a dozen artists. THEN find out he's written history books on the state of Texas.
      People like me that worked retail and factory where they pipe in am radio all day and we heard 'sussudio' fifty million times, well, yeah, we kind of got snarky but know it wasn't his fault, thats AM radio. I hate Billy Joel even worse for that:)
      Then there is the tiny clique that figures he 'ruined' Genesis, those people don't even know enough about Genesis to have heard Trick of the Tail or Wind and Wuthering to know it was hardly Phil that changed their sound.
      And of course there's a collection of ex wives.....

      I can´t understand how any serious music fan could deride Phil Collins given his prolific singer-songwriter career and some amazing classic songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds etc.

    • @mikearchibald744
      @mikearchibald744 3 місяці тому

      @@7137159381 I think the fact that he made it all seem so EASY really pissed people off, and the fact that he wasn't a 'tortured artist' although come to think of it, 'face value' was pretty tortured. But frankly apart from some occasional youtubes I come across, I don't even know where all these critics are, apparantly they are all in England. Although here in Canada I remember a reviewer of a Yes concert in Quebec saying "who wants to hear a ten minute classical guitar solo?" Uh, a YES fan certianly would.
      And I remember a colleger reviewer back in the day complaining about how dumb Rush was because they wrote a song about Trees.

      He had his own podcast for awhile during covid so I think there's stuff there. The bassist and drummers are usually easiest to talk to, but I find most of these guys who aren't quite musical 'celebrities' are pretty easy to listen to. To be fair, most of the celebrity guys are a little wary because they know whoever they are talking to is looking for some kind of 'hook' for an article or nowadays, headlines for clicks.
      But what almost EVERY really good musician I've listened to has admitted to is the reality of 'luck' in the business. Usually the ones with swelled heads you find it was mostly the producer or the engineer or the song writer and they just have chips on their shoulders. I've started listening to just local people on facebook groups and there are unbelievable musicians everywhere. And come on, who here isn't listening at least partly for some name dropping and stories about other 'celebrities'. But yeah, guys that just talk like Leland Sklar are cool to listen to.

    Love this interview - fun topic, and Lee is a humble genius. Love James Taylor Forever! ❤. And really glad that Leland picked joyful JT song with really great vocal, bass, and guitar parts. I say “joyful” because a lot of people associate JT with melancholy tunes. Fun fact: Leland is cited as a co-lyricist on one of James’s songs called “Woh, Don’t You Know”, which is on James’s 1972 Album called “One Man Dog”

    that number 4 one is definitely something special. Great album. I remember it from WORJ Orlando Mt Dora radio back in the 70's....loved it then and love it now. Great bass lines.

    Playing for Change is fantastic! Was stoked to see Lyle Lovett, especially seeing Sr. Sklar playing bass.
