  • China has a large running head start in EVs. But putting tariffs is not going to do anything for a competitive position globally. What the US has to do is first and foremost make the mindset change,which is to compete not contain: Peter Walker #GlobalArena #China #America #EVs #tariff

    So the US is crying about China subsidizing its industries? And the US doesn’t? Didn’t the US bailed out its auto industry with massive billions upon billions of dollars in subsidies in the early 2000’s? Didn’t the US subsidized its banks every 20 years or so along with its mortgage companies? Didn’t the US subsidized its computer chip companies with huge hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies? Didn't the US subsidized its oil companies and its military weapon manufacturing companies as well? Like Ben Norton and many political analysts have pointed out the US has subsidized just about every single industry that it has ever partook in! Nobody can point out a single manufacturing industry in the US that has not been subsidized by the US government! What the US wants to do is to continue to subsidize the hell out of all of its industries to make them competitive against China, but at the same time prevent China from subsidizing any of its industries whatsoever so that all of the American companies would have a huge advantage over Chinese companies! China isn’t that stupid to allow the US to play dirty like that! The US has played China dirty too many times already so not this time, cheater!

    The USA wants to slow down China's growth and advancement, and *buy time* for itself, but to what end??? What can the USA do with more time?
    The USA cannot financially afford to compete with China. It's in hock up to its eyeballs. It's on the brink of major financial collapse.
    The USA has one quarter the number of STEM graduates that China has. China is out-innovating the USA by a country mile.
    According to the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, China leads the world in 37 out of 44 critical technology fields.
    Last year, China was granted more patents than the USA and Japan combined!
    According to the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2023, China has 16 of the top 25 universities that produce scientifically impactful research.
    The Nature Index says that the *top 23* rising science institutions in the world are all Chinese! And 39 of the top 50 are Chinese. (Seven are American, two are British, and two are German.)

    US tariff is really for election purposes as it does almost nothing to the Chinese EV development. I say this because up to day there is no Chinese brand allowed in the US to sell China car so the tariff is for sale that has never existed. The other important data is China in 2023 became the world's biggest car exporter after overtaking Japan. It did so without the America market.
    The tariff is seen as a preemptive protection to the American car industry. Its imposition will almost certainly locks up the US car industry in a permanent uncompetitive mode.

      If the US has to compete with China fairly then China would have put the US out of business in every single field a long time ago! Look at how China allows every single American company to do business in China (John Deere, Apple, GM, Tesla, Microsoft, Starbuck, Nike, Walmart, Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Intel, Qualcomm, and nearly 1000 other American companies) are allowed to operate in China. But the US has banned nearly 1000 Chinese companies from doing business in the US! How is that an unfair advantage for China? If the US has to compete fairly with China then China would be kickIng the US’s arse at an even greater level! Even despite cheating against China the US is getting its arse handed to it by China! No wonder the US is so bitter, even despite cheating it is still getting beat like a drum by China! This is a case of the cheater getting even more sore because it tried to get an unfair advantage over China by cheating against China, but despite all of the cheating that it does to China it still got beat by China! The US is the Wile E. Coyote and China is the Road Runner that simply can’t be defeated no matter what kinds of schemes the US throws at it! Being the Road Runner China always finds a way to use the US’s own schemes against it! No wonder the sore-losing USA is so bitter against China! China is unbeatable! Beep beep!

      In theory, by capitalism, competition will drive innovations. Quality should go up and price should go down. However, this concept assumes the same playing field. For example, China figures out the supply chain for a new industry and invests all critical areas. For example, EV proliferation will require batteries and green energy sources, charging stations, electricity delivery. If US does not improve its technologies in every sector simultaneously, their EV industry can not prosper. But, US is lack of a political structure to set long-term objectives and maintain a centralised plan. Biden administration tried to re-establish semiconductor manufacturing in US by forcing TSMC to build factory in Arizona. TSMC found they could not find sufficient qualified, experienced engineers in US and the labour in US does not cooperate with the management as in Taiwan. TSMC estimates the chip made in US with the same technology will be at least 50% more expensive than in Taiwan. That means only US companies will be forced to purchase these more expensive chips and further adding costs to their own products.

    The US had a head start on ICE vehicles and saw that it would be difficult to catch up so it required joint ventures with the world's best to share in that market. When NEV started their climb, China saw opportunity, both in part to solving their Paris Accord agreement and in business. Here, it would be one of the first in this market. Today, it has that first starter advantage both in NEV software and batteries. It would be difficult or nearly impossible for the US to catch up when China already has a mature supply chain, the raw materials, and the talent to be strong in NEV. The US doesn't have the first two and is weak in the third.
    I think Biden made a bad choice to go it alone. He should have used the same tactics China used and demand joint ventures to enter the US market as did the Chinese for the US to enter the Chinese market. And, if by a miracle, the US can come up the curve and go it alone, so be it and the US can carve up its own share of the market both domestically and internationally, just as the Chinese did. Instead, by isolating itself from China, the problem won't go away, and in fact, get worse. China will command the world market for NEV as the US and EU would be uncompetitive if they go it alone.

    • @user-sf1nq9uj7p
      @user-sf1nq9uj7p 20 днів тому +2

      Actually, the electric car got a head start in the U.S. in the early 1900s but the U.S. decided on the ICE instead. It could have taken it up again during the first oil crises in the 1980s but couldn't see the forest for the trees. It has become too conservative for its own good, unwilling to try new, revolutionary ideas as much as it once used to. It has become less of a risk taker and that's not good for any nation to advance. It should not be afraid to try new, unexplored frontiers - not just of land or planets but social and political reform. China did under Deng Hsiao-ping and was a bold move that has paid dividends. Today, China continues to forge ahead with new ideas and innovations. Where does this leave the United States when it continually stymies moves into EVs and green technology?

Several Chinese car makers already said they will not enter US market. Another point of view, how many German, Korean, Japanese EV imported to US every year? Why don't sanction them? It ain't the EV, AI, high tech competition, Protectionism, unilateral sanctions, dangerous containment, proxy wars, or even battle of ideology like Communism vs Democracy; what is killing Amerikkka is our political system can no longer cope with the challenges of ecological threats and global economic restructuring as Western hegemony and racist Colonialism finally reaches its end. Our institutions are inadequate, or laws are overly complex and counter productive, our legal system is insanely convoluted and unjust, and worst, our electoral system prevents any changes even when we all know what we need to do. By default, our political system and those who gets into office prevents any adjustment or course correction. It's literally like the last days of the Ching Dynasty when those in power only care about themselves staying on the throne, and not the country. I'm sick to my stomach.

    the problem is that under the current US political system, no politician can think long term, no politician can admit own mistakes, no politician can speak truth if it is not the voters want to hear… it is sadly a systematic issue which cannot be resolved under the current US political system. If you want the political power, you want to be elected, you basically have to lie about everything favoring the direction where you get potentially more votes. it doesn’t matter if it hurts American people or society for long term as ultimately those politicians are self centric and power hungry…

You can have pride in your own work and what has been achieved before but never forget not to allow that same pride to hinder your own desire to keep progressing and keep improving. One of the greatest failure in having too much pride is when one doesn't see any need to keep changing and improving because what ever for if one is already "Number 1"? THAT, is the danger.

    Let's understand competion with Chinese Chacteristics.
    1 The CPC gives masive subsidies
    2 The CPC holds down factory wages too poverty level
    3 The CPC allows industrail pollution
    4 PRC auto companies have very low R & D costs due to technology transfers both voulintarly and non-- voulintarly

    • @geraldkohar
      @geraldkohar 20 днів тому +6

      Let me get your facts straight:
      1. CPC gave massive subsidies, but so other countries such as US and EU. In fact, the moment Biden announced the 100% tariff on Chinese EV, he also announced subsidies to US companies on the very exact same EV industry in US.
      2. As for wages for thr factory in China, it is determined by each and individual factories, not CPC, and since there are many foreign factories there if the wages are below poverty level, it is at the fault of those factories, not government. But, looking at China's population wealth in general, it is safe to say that most factories offer enough wages for its people to live a decent life.
      3. Well, we are talking about China being the leader in green tech and US government is the one preventing its own population to be part to improve environment by adopting affordable green tech such as Chinese EV. So what do you mean by CPC allows industrial polution? Btw, those polution is made with older Europe/US tech, so they had to make do with it, but we can clearly see that they make a lot of effort to improve, unlike the No Action Talk Only (NATO) boss (USA).
      4. Can you prove that they spend little R & D just because of tech transfer? If so, why do their tech is now actually more advance than any other countries? I believe tech transfer does not enable you to surpass the tech creator, unless you also spend a lot of money in R&D to improve the existing (transferred) tech.
