So on this spring compressor you have compress the spring to take the nut and top mount out, de-compress to remove the old strut, load your new strut, compress the spring, install your top mount, tighten the bolt and lastly remove assembly by de-compressing the spring?

If you compress it upside-down position, you don't have to de-compress the spring to replace the strut. You can compress the spring, unscrew the nut, remove the old strut, then tighten the nut with new strut, while the spring is still compressed. You can replace the strut by single compression.
