If you compress it upside-down position, you don't have to de-compress the spring to replace the strut. You can compress the spring, unscrew the nut, remove the old strut, then tighten the nut with new strut, while the spring is still compressed. You can replace the strut by single compression. We have a heavy-duty model, SK-3500, that can do from compact sedan all the way up to pick-up trucks. Please see the demo video above. Thank you :)

You can either compress it upright and upside-down. The reason it is more efficient to compress upside-down is because you only need single compression to replace the strut. You do not have to release it and readjust the spring which is the hardest part of replacing strut. Because the compressor will hold the top plate and spring compressed you can just take off the strut and put the new strut without decompressing it. It will only take 1 minute to change the strut. :)

The strut in the video is a tuning spring for FORD F150. If you frequently work with such a strong spring, SK-3500 model is recommended. Since it is equipped with a gear reduction, the spring can be compressed much more easily. But if you work with heavy springs occasionally, SK-3000 would work for you. We use the spring force to lock the gear, so stronger spring you compress, it locks tighter. If you mostly work on heavy duty springs, SK-3500 would work for you. Thank you for your comment. Our spring compressor can do either upright or upside-down and those clamps are designed to hold the base or the top case of strut, not spring. If you do upside-down, as demonstrated, you can replace the strut by single compression, while it is still holding the top case and the spring compressed. The clamps also can be flipped for small springs that does not have base to hold, like coilovers. SK-3500 has dual ratio gear reduction that makes much easier compression on heavy duty springs, such as springs from SUVs and pickup trucks.
