Racial Tension Between Blacks and Mexicans In SoCal

  • In California's prisons and streets, a complex and often overlooked racial dynamic has been brewing for decades. The tension between the Mexican and Black communities is a stark reminder of the deep-seated issues that plague our society. Despite being marginalized groups, they are often pitted against each other, perpetuating a cycle of mistrust and hostility.
In California's prisons, the divide is stark. A 2019 report by the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice found that while African Americans make up only 6.5% of California's population, they account for 27.3% of the prison population. In contrast, Latinos, who make up 38.9% of the state's population, comprise only 44.5% of the prison population. This stark disparity is a result of systemic racism, with Black individuals disproportionately targeted by law enforcement and subjected to harsher sentencing.
On the streets, the situation is equally dire. In Southern California, gangs have long been a source of tension between Mexican and Black communities. The Bloods and Crips, two of the most notorious gangs in Los Angeles, have a long history of conflict with Mexican-American gangs like the Sureños. This rivalry has led to numerous gang-related killings, assaults, and other violent crimes.
However, it's not just gangs that are driving the divide. The long history of racial tensions between Mexican and Black communities in California dates back to the early 20th century when Black Americans were forced to flee the South and settle in Los Angeles, leading to clashes over jobs, housing, and social services. This historical context has created a sense of mistrust and hostility that continues to simmer beneath the surface.
The divide is also perpetuated by societal factors such as economic inequality, lack of access to education and healthcare, and political marginalization. In California, the economic benefits of gentrification have largely benefited white communities, pushing out low-income communities of color, including Mexican and Black families.
To address this issue, we must acknowledge the historical trauma and systemic racism that has fueled the divide between Mexican and Black communities in California. We need to work towards creating a more equitable society where all communities have access to equal opportunities, resources, and services.

Phoenix mex og here, sir. Your points are very well taken. I think the black/mex tension is pretty much at the street gang level. Examples: 1) Most hispanics and blacks in Latin America share a common history of colonialism, and 2) many young in these new generations (i.e., "millenials") seem to have transcended color, which is very refreshing. The tension, I agree, is at the gang level. In term of prison sentences, it's part our own fault, and the vestiges of racism well baked into our society. The real tranformation will happen when we really are unified and really understand the truth.

All that you said is incorrect…
Blck and Brwn are not enemies in prison.
Listen to this closely.. you don’t respect an enemy, it’s on site with an enemy. Surenos give blcks respect as the blcks give surenos respect.
When something jumps off both sides get busy then we talk and show the same respect to each other and resume program.
Fact.. the reason surenos are often the ones to rush into kicking things off is because blcks have bloods, cribs and non affiliates. Surenos don’t.. what I mean by that is if a sureno actin up we have no issue handling our own. Now when a blood acting up, the cribs often don’t handle it or other way around so that puts surenos i a position to handle business and thing jump off.
Last thing I will say all the channels you mentioned are no good all Pc I respect what you doing but if you wanna reach out to the youth dealing with trash Pc will make it worse and harder

I lived in Van Nuys, California a suburb of Los Angeles in 1975 and the racism, dislike, or hatred for each other was between the blacks and the Mexicans. The whites weren't involved at all. Unlike Washington State where I've lived most of my life my school had a fence all the way around it, and you couldn't leave unless school was over or you lived close enough and had a pass to eat lunch at home. The students stayed separated by race whenever they could like when eating in the cafeteria, during a game, or school assembly, just like in prison.
