The guy on the right is correct. Under A Funeral Moon was designed to sound exactly like what it is. To criticize it harshly means it's not your forte. That's cool too. But the whole point has sort of been missed then. I am not a fan of symphonies, but I understand they are designed to have that specific sound. Thus, I have no commentary about them. A raw Black Metal work is the same way.
Great effort lads. Darkthrone has a beast of a discography. Really enjoyed the video 🤘 Jammin Jon digging into Darkthrone for the first time made for some entertaining comments.

I love how divisive Darkthrone is. No two lists are alike. That said, there were loads of hot takes in this video, but it was fun to watch in between the 30-40 ad interruptions.
Necrotic Nick- I had a feeling it would be this way since they have a wild discography. Speaking for myself, I wanted to be honest and some of the more celebrated albums were some of my lesser favorites compared to some arguably deep cuts. I like that we all didn't agree on stuff. It was good for conversation.
@@thrallsofmetal I did enjoy the way it went better than if it were three similar and predictable opinions. It made it way more interesting and amusing, especially with all the eye rolling! I now must listen through my collection again to make my own trivial list for my own amusement. Cheers! Also, you gotta check that new StarGazer out, bro!
My buddy introduced me to A Blaze in the Northern Sky in high school and it was my first real black metal exposure. I didn’t know what to make of it but he loved the rawness and I did think it was pretty different and cool. Then I totally lost touch with Darkthrone until a friend at the record store told me to get Old Star and I absolutely fucking love that album. 100% with you guys in hoping it’s indicative of how their next one or two will be and I’m excited to hear they’re in the studio hashing that out for us!
Necrotic Nick- I didn't get into Darkthrone until after I heard Emperor and Immortal I believe but I think it was Total Death that I first heard and it was enough to get me started. I found Blaze later and that's been my go to for the older stuff. Old Star is amazing and I'm hoping for a continuation of that sound for a couple of albums as well.
This is ace. After a few beers with the guys last week and being scolded, I literally just started on a Darkthrone binge. I knew absolutely nothing about them aside from a few albums/songs, but I'm now most of the way through their discography. I LOVE Soulside Journey. Can't believe I've never listened to it before (Goatlord was pretty neat too). My next favourite stuff so far has been the Ravishing Grimness/Plagueweilder/Hate Them period. Panzerfaust is great too. I get the feeling I missed the boat on the OG BM 'trinity'', and struggle with the sound of them a bit more. 100% understand why people love those 3 records though. Gonna be listening to the last handful of albums tomorrow. D-beat crust all the way!
Necrotic Nick- I was excited to do this one since they pretty much have made a career doing whatever the fuck they want. Their later career is all about bucking trends and just riffing out. Old Star is a flat out banger and I can't wait for the new one which they're in the studio now I believe.
Under a Funeral Moon is my number one - in hindsight, a transitional record, but I think it's as dark as hell, really evil, brutally raw atmosphere. But Transylvanian Hunger is their most extreme statement - it's like Filosem, closer to dark ambient / noise music than metal, even though it's being made by a metal band. I know this sounds weird, but listen to it on headphones late at night, when it's quiet and turn the volume down. Creepy as hell - it'll take you places.
Necrotic Nick- Honestly, it sounds like you'd get the ASMR effect with the low volume drone of Hunger in headphones. It'd probably sound like a bunch of static whispers.
1. A blaze in the northern sky 2. Transilvanian hunger 3. Under a funeral moon 4. Soulside journey 5. Old star 6. Plaguewielder 7. Hate them 8. Panzerfaust 9. Total death 10. Arctic thunder 11. Goatlord 12. Ravishing grimness 13. The cult is alive 14. Sardonic wrath 15. The underground resistance 16. FOAD 17. Circle the wagons 18. Dark thrones and black flags
You guys should do more videos about black metal really liked it. Btw just bought Transilvanian hunger on vinyl and it sounds as killer as the first time i heard it.
I could be in the minority but I've always preferred Darkthrone's later material to the super grim, ultra lo fi early albums... The Cult is Alive, Underground Resistance and Old Star are my favourites!
I would love to see a metal channel go out on a limb and do a hardcore ranking of a band like Sick of It All, Agnostic Front, Biohazard, Madball, even some Circle Jerks, or Black Flag. I have yet to see anyone tackle a ranking of those bands. I love my metal but I love my hardcore punk too.
Nick made a very good point when talking about the 'Transylvanian Hunger'. Darkthrone's trinity introduced a series of tropes, a style, and an esthetic (not merely visually, but in overall vibe) that is still woven through virtually every black metal album produced to this day. Although my primary preferred style is atmospheric black metal, preferably by bands that are so completely underground that Darkthrone would be considered mainstream by comparison, I still hold Darkthrone to be one of my top three artists ever, from any genre, based on their influence alone. In consideration of my many, many years being into crust punk, I absolutely love the band's punkish and Dennis Dread-illustrated period ('The Cult Is Alive', even through Dread didn't illustrate the cover, through 'Circle The Wagons'. (Speaking of which, if you guys ever need input from someone deep into crust punk and its various connections and inroads through and between metal genres, let me know.) And finally, I greatly admire Darkthrone's approach in recent years (from 'The Underground Resistance' through today), which sees them exploring a slightly different take on honoring genres that influenced them over the years.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! They guys have always been a favorite of my mine because they love to keep pushing themselves with different sounds while adding their own blackened touch to them. I can't wait to hear what they do next.
Love Punk, love BM, love Darkthrone. I couldn’t rank them like that. Love the punkish side of Darkthrone. Actually FOAD helped me get into more punk metal bands, like Bludwulf, Gehenna so on And so forth.
Respect for all of you for making it through what is a challenging catalog. Don’t be too hard on Jon for his ranking, it’s understandable given his newness to the genre, massive respect to him for listening to them all. I also understand Nick’s ranking of the unholy trinity as well as coming back to those albums after a minute of not listening to them they don’t stand up to as when you first heard them back in the day. Shredlord gets major props for defending the True Black Metal which was the dark place these albums came from. That being said Transylvanian Hunger is my least favourite of the trinity. Blaze, Funeral, and Panzerfaust are my favourites of the true period,. Ravishing Grimness, Circle The Wagons, Underground, and Old Star are my later favourites. I totally loved the video great job guys.I listened to Old Star straight after and it was awesome. It also brought to mind a recommendation for a recent release you guys might not have checked out which is in a similar vein as Old Star but more solos. It’s called North Star and the band is Einherjer. Hope you like it. Check out the bass in the song Stars , somebody owes Geezer Butler a beer.Have a great one guys and keep being awesome 🤘
Necrotic Nick- This was definitely a tough and Jon went in with an open mind on this one and I think he ended up finding some gems in this one. Under the Funeral Moon and Transylvania Hunger didn't age well for me but had them a bit higher than some because of how influential they were. Blaze and Panzerfaust rule no question about it though and I love those later albums you mentioned. I've been meaning to check out that Einherjer but it's been difficult to find here so I may just have to cave in and order it. Thanks for checking this one out, bro! I'm glad you dug it!
Hey @thrallsofmetal have you guys ever thought about doing an electric wizard or Alice in chains ranking. Just some food for thought. They are both amazing in their own right.
Just recently finished listening to their Discography (aside from Goatlord). Man, have I been Missing out. Here's my ranking: 1. Under a Funeral Moon. - Fun Fact: The most audible parts of the Drums in this are the Cymbals and the Floor Tom. Fenriz apparently stripped down his kit for this album to have Only 1 Tom, the Floor Tom. The Floor Tom sounds Thunderous, especially on Tracks 2 & 3. The Bass Drums even Boom during the slower parts too. 2. A Blaze in the Northern Sky 3. Panzerfaust 4. Soulside Journey 5. Transilvanian Hunger 6. Hate Them 7. Sardonic Wrath 8. Eternal Hails...... 9. Old Star 10. Arctic Thunder - Love the Lead Tone and Solos on this album. 11. The Underground Resistance 12. F.O.A.D. 13. Dark Thrones and Black Flags 14. Circle the Wagons 15. The Cult is Alive 16. Plaguewielder 17. Total Death 18. Ravishing Grimness Pretty much love all of these except for the last 3; Could Not get into them for some reason.
Good ranking! I agree for the most part. I would rank Plaguewielder higher, I have a soft spot for it. And Total Death quite a lot higher, I love that thing.
1) Transilvanian Hunger 2) Under a Funeral Moon 3) A Blaze in the Northern Sky - 4) Panzerfaust 5) Soulside Journey - Don’t care too much about the rest, but respect that they carry on making the music they like to play…! They earned it with these strong releases… 🤘😎🤘
"Panzerfaust" is Nicky's favorite! Great video!!!! I'm sorry if this has been asked before, or if it is a tender subject but......how is "The Tommy" doing? He's been gone for so long I'm guessing he won't be back? Thank you ghouls!!!!
Necrotic Nick- Thank you! Panzerfaust is a beast and I love it as well. Tommy decided that doing videos really wasn't for him so he's done but he's doing well and we all still hang out when we can. Covid hasn't helped that much though.
Being a norwegian musician playing in black metal bands and being extremely passionate about this unique heritage of ours, im having the same reaction to this, as an italian grandmother would have if she watched a video of Gordon Ramsay fucking up and misunderstanding italian cuisine. But hey, i enjoy a lot of your content, nonetheless. You guys do some great fucking reviews!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! I'm glad you're digging the content! We had a feeling this one would divisive since there's a fair amount of hard takes in this one, but we really enjoyed going over it. Darkthrone has so many different phases that I though we'd get some vastly different rankings and it turned out pretty much like I expected which was all over the place.
I'm listening to album "Under a Funeral Moon" catching a buzz and I'm captivated. Darkthrone kills all this album and "A Blaze". I feel so scaringly comfortable. Now to "Crossing the Triangle of Flames" and I feel like I was let down from the gallows man. Mental shit been real struggle yall. I'm just glad to be alive. BTW, I'm from West Virginia, Ohio's neighbor. Patrick.
Apparently there is a bootleg demo called Clamor which is Goatload without the vocals. Also the track Snowfall off their first demo is an incredible long instrumental death metal track. Mandatory listening. Sadly probably my favorite song of theirs.
Necrotic Nick- To a degree. While Blaze is brilliant in my opinion, the more raw follow ups are just not as good. Even production aside they drone on and rely on the atmosphere too much. Still, they're highly influential and they definitely helped shape black metal.
This was the best ranking video yet 😂😂 Some of those numbers are fucking hilarious, poor Shred nearly walked out in disgust 😂. Great video though, great to see some 'different' opinions
Necrotic Nick- I had a feeling we'd have different rankings going into this one. While Shred and I are both black metal fans we have different tastes within the style. Jon is still new to all of it but he's learning. I'm glad you dug the video, man!
@@thrallsofmetal can't wait for more black metal rankings 👌👌 darkthrone re-released some of their albums a few years ago, with fenriz doing commentary. Really shows why and how they achieved and wanted the sound on UAFM and others. I believe some are here on UA-cam 🤘
I really gotta tip my hat to you guys. This was quite a task. Especially JJ slogging through 18 albums of previously unheard stuff. Bravo good Sir! Now I gotta check out Old Star. I have to admit I've slept on Dark Throne's last two releases. Slow down guys!!! Lol.
Necrotic Nick- He braved the cold, grim world of Darkthrone and came out a fan of some stuff years ago he might not have even listened to. He did well. Old Star and Arctic Thunder are sweet and you should definitely check them out.
@@thrallsofmetal Thanks. I streamed Old Star earlier today, and I see why you guys dig it. It definitely has more of a black metal vocal approach than they had been doing for a little while. It seems chillier. They seem to have hit that stage where they're combining equal parts Black Metal with the sort of heavy metal they were doing between 2010 & 2014. It's cool, but gosh darn it, I just love the goofier side of Dark Throne, like The Wind They Called The Dungeon Shaker & Viking Metal Punks & Thise Treasures Will Never Befall You & my all time favorite: We Are The Graves Of The 80's (love this song). I also relistened to Panzerfaust because of this video. This was a treat today. Thanks guys!
Number one so far for me would have to be Under a Funeral Moon. I don’t know, it sounds great to me. The music, the vocals, the atmosphere. I think one of the things about black metal, from my understanding, is for it to not sound the greatest; but somehow it still sounds good 😂
First of all this is my first time watching you all and totally like this ranking. Darkthrone was my into to real black metal. Under a Funeral Moon is my number one
Love Darkthrone. A blaze in the northern sky Is my favorite album. I picked up nightmare logic by power trip, unsilent death by Nails, to mega therion by CF, despicable by carcass and blood fire death by Bathory yesterday
First time visiting your channel. Interesting hearing your different takes on the Darkthrone discography. I've been listening to this band for a really long time. Not that I want to change anyone's mind about anything, but I strongly suggest more listens to Under a Funeral Moon. The production is really appropriate and, I think, not at all bad. Turn it up and you'll even hear how loud and prominent the bass is. The drums sound very real and live -- the way a drum kit with a few mics is supposed to sound, and teh guitars, while maybe a little quiet, are perfectly clear and audible. just about every riff is a standout. Forget everything about how abrasive and ugly teh album is *supposed* to be and just listen to it. There's more going on there than what might first be apparent, and a fair amount of variety in tempos and riffing styles even. Of course, Bathory was probably the biggest influence, but Darkthrone have one great advantage over Bathory -- they always sounded like a real band playing in a room, even if it was just two dudes.
Goatlord WITH vocals was definitely at the bottom of my list. However if you get their demo compilation "The Frostland tapes" the original instrumental version is on it and its my favorite thing they've ever done. Without the vocals the songs really shine. As far as the production goes, there was no production. This is literally a boombox recording of a rehearsal that they then added vocals to. At the beginning of this its mentioned Fenriz isn't a technical player, but if you listen to what he's doing on Goatlord, the guy is playing insane stuff. And the instrumental version on Frostland also has a drum solo that was cut from the vocal version that really showcases just how good he is.
I think Goatlord sounds fine and I don't mind the vocals at all, though I can totally see why someone might want an instrumental version. It sounds like a band playing in the room you are in and that's great -- totallyd oesn't need "production". Goatlord is the first Darkthrone release I loved almost instantly and the second one I ever listened to, after Transilvanian Hunger, which I did not take to nearly as well, at least at that time. The death metal magic is really there on Goatlord and in some ways I prefer it to Soulside Journey, which is a great album I always wished sounded a little rawer (IE, a little more like Autopsy and a little less like the second Dismember album).
@@DamnableReverend I do like Soulside a lot. Goatlord does sound good I think, especially considering it was literally recorded on a cassette player boombox.
You should do a Windir discography ranking. Those guys were a Norwegian blackened folk metal band that lasted until 2004 and only released four albums.
Necrotic Nick- I like Windir but the cut off for a ranking is 5 studio releases whether they be full lengths or EPs. Vreid is more of possibility since they had more albums and contain some of the ex-members from Windir.
Well Jammin' John on Rye if you like the GOATLORD Albums music just listen to the version from THE FROSTLAND TAPES 3-CD set (Disc 3) which is the instrumental demo version. There U Go.
Fond memories of the first time I heard Ablaze, a sampler tape from the Label when I was on their Mailing List. No joke, I was absolutely floored and this release sent me off down the BM Rabbit hole I still occupy to this Day. Gargamel yelling at the Smurfs 😆 Fenriz would probably appreciate that comparison.
I have everything from Darkthrone. Everything including early demos, rehearsals, live recordings from early days when they played live, demo recordings from first 4 albums, original Goatlord rehearsal without the vocals (I do love the vocals by the way lol), every studio album, best of, tribute you name it. I have to say half their material or maybe more is forgettable to me but i do love the band. 2nd demo is amazing up to Goatlord rehearsal (without vocals). A Blaze in the Nothern Sky is also amazing. Next 2 are okay but haven't aged well for me. Panzerfaust is my favorite along with Hate Them and Cult Is Alive. Then they had some okay albums but nothing real special until the 2 newest albums which i enjoy.
Necrotic Nick- Most of the one you named were favorites of mine as well. I've loved the last 3 to be honest and I'm really curious to hear the new one when it drops.
The Celtic Frost worship era is my favorite. Hate Them is the best Celtic Frost album not recorded my Celtic Frost. I agree on the assessment of Old Star though.
Necrotic Nick- I love Hate them but Panzerfaust for me was the perfect Celtic Frost worship album they did for me. I love Old Star though and I'm curious where they'll go from there which we'll probably find out later this year hopefully.
The new album Astral Fortress is fucking fantastic too! Trouble is tho, a lot of their older albums’ production truly bothers my sensory issues, as much as I’d like to enjoy it cuz I love their style, it’s just hard for me personally
My ranking: 1. A Blaze in the Northern Sky 2. Old Star 3. Eternal Hails 4. Panzerfaust 5. The Underground Resistance 6. Soulside Journey 7. Under a Funeral Moon 8. Transilvanian Hunger 9. Ravishing Grimness 10. Arctic Thunder 11. Sardonic Wrath 12. Total Death 13. Circle the Wagons 14. Dark Thrones and Black Flags 15. Hate Them 16. F.O.A.D. 17. Plaguewielder 18. The Cult is Alive 19. Goatlord
Unless I missed it, you skipped over Goatlord, which they were working on after The Soulside before they scrapped it and made A Blaze in the Northern Sky. Seemed worth mentioning because there was a gap in your history.
Great job guys! Split opinions - sure, but that's how it is. Personally I'm not even sure if I can pick a #1. A Blaze..., Under a funeral..., Transylvanian... and Panzerfaust all have potential to clinch the title, but they are bring such different feelings to the table.... Transylvanian... is probably the grimmest and coldest though.
Loving the content so I have been watching the old ranking videos. I have only heard Eternal Hails......, the Unholy Trinity and Panzerfaust so I can't give a complete ranking of the band but I would rank the albums like this: Eternal Hails......>>>>>>>>>>A Blaze In The Northern Sky>>Panzerfaust>>>>>>Under A Funeral Moon>>Transylvanian Hunger.
im glad the middle guy gave Ravishing Grimness 2nd place 🤘🏻 that album is my number one. perfect BM production that sounds amazing and powerful and yet still cold and atmospheric. riffs and tempo of each song are hypnotic. only six long songs and i get lost in them 🔥 perfect album for me. the claws of time is the best one and creme de la creme of Darkthrone, the melody is stuck in my head sometimes lol
Necrotic Nick- LMAO! The number of albums that dude has is ridiculous. He's amazing though. I got lucky in a Metalhead Box and got that shirt. Fuckin' love that band.
I am hopeful for a return to some of these rankings. Just to see the growth and variation of what you guys think with the records. Especially Jon, homeslice had a tall order with this one... but he needs to knock Goatlord out of his top five. -Insert "Fucking Embarrassing" gif here- 😂😂😂 Much love to you guys.
Since Under A Funeral Moon is my favorite, I nearly gave up on you guys... but honestly you won me over. Dig the channel, gotta say though, how did you not mention the ridiculous floor tom on Under A Funeral Moon? I have a 10 inch woofer in my living room, and that shit shakes my house. That’s my personal highlight of that album. Y’all are underrating that production a bit (unlike Transylvanian Hunger it was done in a studio with a pro engineer). Best bass sound of the earlier period in my opinion. Lo-Fi and fuzzy and balances out the distant drums and cold guitar tone nicely.
Necrotic Nick- Well, thanks for sticking with us, bro! The lo fi, more minimalist/ atmospheric stuff is still difficult for me to get into. I prefer more dynamics in the songwriting. The static blast on Transylvanian Hunger started to grate on me after awhile but at least Funeral Moon was a bit more varied. Blaze was hard to beat though for me since it captures a lot of my favorite aspect of black metal across the board. Overall this was a fun discography to go over though.
1 A blaze in the northern Sky 2 Eternal hails even though it wasn't made when this aired it's just f#@king disgusting and doomy and evil 3 Artic thunder 4 under a funeral moon 5 Panzerfoust 6 Soulside journey 7 Transylvania hunger 8 Old Star 9 Ravishing Grimness 10 Circle The Wagons 11 Underground Resistance 12 Total Death 13 Hate them 14 sardonic wrath 15 dark thrones and black flags 16 Plaguewielder 17 F.O.A.D 18 The cult is Alive 19 Goatlord This is my ranking and this wasn't easy when their is so many amazing records
5. Plagueweilder 4. Hate Them 3. Under a Funeral Moon 2. Panzerfaust 1. A Blaze in the Northern Sky Panzerfaust is one of my all time favorite vocal performances. Put on one song from Transilvanian Hunger and it's cool, two songs and it gets kind of dull.
Cool video! Kudos to Jon for sitting through the full Darkthrone discography even though it's pretty apparent that much of it isn't really his cup of tea - even though I disagree with his takes, I respect his taking the time to listen to the material. Good takes for the most part otherwise, although as a diehard fan of the pure BM sound I have to rank Under a Funeral Moon and Transilvanian Hunger at the top - alongside masterpieces like Panzerfaust, A Blaze, Soulside. I also like Total Death, it's got a pretty good sound to it. Goatlord with vocals is very bad, but the instrumental version as found on Frostland Tapes is pretty awesome, so I'd suggest any fans of Soulside check that out. I have a soft spot for their mid-era stuff, especially Plaguewielder, Hate Them and Sardonic Wrath. They do some good stuff there. But if a stumble around Cult is Alive but starting with FOAD I enjoy their blackened punk stuff too.
Guys, they wrote a song called 'Canadian metal" because they love Canadian metal, not because they think they're not from norway or something. That was a weird comment. As someone who has seen most of the bands they talk about at fun shows throughout the years, it was a pretty nice tribute. Yes, newer Darkthrone is very goofy, but it's nothing if not sincere. I do wish Fenriz and Nocturno would come together a bit mroe on the songs. Fenriz's songs are pretty well-written but sometimes a little too straightforward. Nocturno is aiming for more with more stuff goign on, but it doesn't always come together. Anyway, I enjoy what they've been doing in the last buncho f years even though it does have its weird elements taht will mean "niche appeal" -- like silly vocals and lyrical concepts. That's just where they are now and what they want to do, and as a fan of the band I'm ok with it.
'Transilvanian Hunger' isn't a regular album, it's a trip. If you listen to it with the intention of doing anything but leaving the universe in a hypnotic trance, you're not going to connect with it. Turn the light off, turn your brain off, take some time away from expectations and other people, and play the album. It's better in the dark because your ears drink all the hypno juice. Don't wait for progressions etc, you're not listening to 'Soulside Journey', you're on one ;) Try that and upload an update. Consider it to be ambience, and abandon all expectations you have of a metal album, because as Fenriz shows with Neputune Towers, he is well versed in transcendent sounds. Hope this helps
Necrotic Nick- I'll probably revisit it sometime in the future but to be honest, it shouldn't take that much to get into an album in my opinion. I think it has merit because of how influential it is but it's just not for me as much as others were in the discography.
A real fun Episode guys👍 And i wouldnt argue with any if your approaches. Thats Shows hiw great this guys are... something for everyone, always damn true to themselves, just doing what they wanna do and never giving a fuck for opinions. I am not a black metal guy at all, but i love this guys and every album for what it is... if its punk or black metal. Yes
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! This was honestly one for my favorites to go over because they're sound changed so much over the years. I love their punk like spirit in terms of just doing whatever they felt like doing regardless of people's opinions of them. I can't wait to hear what the next one sounds like.
With you guys I spend my insomias, MUCH THANKS!!!
Really like the way you guys do the ranking of albums, its freash to me...just suscribed...keep on!!!!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Welcome aboard!
I honestly don't think it's transitional, I think it's its own beast. It's their most bizarre and alien sounding album, along with Goatlord.
1. A blaze in the northern sky
2. Transilvanian hunger
3. Under a funeral moon
4. Soulside journey
5. Old star
6. Plaguewielder
7. Hate them
8. Panzerfaust
9. Total death
10. Arctic thunder
11. Goatlord
12. Ravishing grimness
13. The cult is alive
14. Sardonic wrath
15. The underground resistance
16. FOAD
17. Circle the wagons
18. Dark thrones and black flags
Always a killer watch...much love gentlemen!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Much love you're way as well, bro!
The instrumental version of Goatlord is on cd 2 of Frostland Tapes.
I own all 18 of their albums. My favorite is "Transilvanian Hunger".
Necrotic Nick- Same here. It was going to be a difficult task to beat Blaze in my opinion. That's been a favorite of mine for years.
You guys should do more videos about black metal really liked it.
Btw just bought Transilvanian hunger on vinyl and it sounds as killer as the first time i heard it.
Necrotic Nick- We definitely want to incorporate more black metal on the channel in the future for sure.
Stay tuned as I rank the top 18 UA-cam ads in this video.
Necrotic Nick- Did they at least advertise something cool?
I could be in the minority but I've always preferred Darkthrone's later material to the super grim, ultra lo fi early albums... The Cult is Alive, Underground Resistance and Old Star are my favourites!
Folks, this was really fun to listen to.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! Glad you dug it!
listen to the intro song with a coffee in my hands then going to the gym listen to a new album is the best part of my day!!!!!!!!
(Speaking of which, if you guys ever need input from someone deep into crust punk and its various connections and inroads through and between metal genres, let me know.)
And finally, I greatly admire Darkthrone's approach in recent years (from 'The Underground Resistance' through today), which sees them exploring a slightly different take on honoring genres that influenced them over the years.
nick did you get the last darkthrone albums erails and where do thonk that belongs in the ranking
Great ranking! Darkthrone is tied with a couple other bands for my favourite of all time.
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! They guys have always been a favorite of my mine because they love to keep pushing themselves with different sounds while adding their own blackened touch to them. I can't wait to hear what they do next.
My favorite black metal band
Transylvanian Hunger is credited to make the sub genre Depressive Black Metal. Mainly in USBM
Here's my ranking:
2. A Blaze in the Northern Sky
3. Panzerfaust
4. Soulside Journey
5. Transilvanian Hunger
6. Hate Them
7. Sardonic Wrath
8. Eternal Hails......
9. Old Star
10. Arctic Thunder - Love the Lead Tone and Solos on this album.
11. The Underground Resistance
12. F.O.A.D.
13. Dark Thrones and Black Flags
14. Circle the Wagons
15. The Cult is Alive
16. Plaguewielder
17. Total Death
18. Ravishing Grimness
Pretty much love all of these except for the last 3; Could Not get into them for some reason.
Good ranking! I agree for the most part. I would rank Plaguewielder higher, I have a soft spot for it. And Total Death quite a lot higher, I love that thing.
Circle the wagons is my favorite
I miss Radio Fenriz, found a lot of bands due to him.
Totally in agreement.
YES! My favorite of the 00's
I Am The Graves Of The 80's!!!!
I Am The Working Class!!!
Those Treasures Will Never Befall You!!!
1) Transilvanian Hunger
2) Under a Funeral Moon
3) A Blaze in the Northern Sky
-
4) Panzerfaust
5) Soulside Journey
-
Don’t care too much about the rest, but respect that they carry on making the music they like to play…!
My number one is "The Cult Is Alive" it have a close place in my heart because it was my introduction to the band!
Hells yeah on the Hellripper shirt!!
How about a Candlemass , and Demonic Christ album ranking. Vital Remains? Great video
Would love a Dimmu Borgir ranking. The albums are quite different one from another.
I went into this assuming Nick would be the one waving the Darkthrone flag but I was pleasantly surprised that was actually Shredlord.
Necrotic Nick- To a degree. While Blaze is brilliant in my opinion, the more raw follow ups are just not as good. Even production aside they drone on and rely on the atmosphere too much. Still, they're highly influential and they definitely helped shape black metal.
This was the best ranking video yet 😂😂
Some of those numbers are fucking hilarious, poor Shred nearly walked out in disgust 😂.
Finally we've got some black metal, thank God is unintentionally funny
I love their entire discography! ABITNS is my favorite tho. One of my favorite black metal albums of all time, if not my favorite
Interesting takes guys!
Necrotic Nick- Thanks, man! We definitely wanted to keep it interesting.
@@thrallsofmetal 🤘
9:11 Perfect impression Shredlord haha
I can't wait for this i just LOVE DARKTHRONE!!!!!!!
Necrotic Nick- Let us know what you think!
Love Darkthrone. A blaze in the northern sky Is my favorite album. I picked up nightmare logic by power trip, unsilent death by Nails, to mega therion by CF, despicable by carcass and blood fire death by Bathory yesterday
Necrotic Nick- Blaze is black metal royalty for me. Holy shit! That's a nice haul, man!
Good score.
I'm pretty sure Fenriz (and members of Mayhem for that matter) preferred to hang out with Varg instead of... you know... Euronymous.
Everyone is hard on ol' uncle Varg
Necrotic Nick- I mean... neither would be my preferred company honestly. Sorry,
@@thrallsofmetal Care to explain why?
On a side note, Phil Anselmo took the band name for Superjoint Ritual from a lyric of a song from A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Necrotic Nick- Shit! I totally forgot about that! lol
Shredlord🤘😎🤘speaking truth. always agree with your album rankings (Schuldiner rankings, Azagthoth rankings) and now Fenriz too. (🖤Necro Nick and John)
"You don't go for the whole Lucifer at once!" - Nic defending Hate Them
Haha
Necrotic Nick- I had to call him on the rookie move. lol
@@thrallsofmetal haha
I agree with you Shredlord. 🤘
Loved the “it’s fucking embarrassing” shout out couch
Got here late... At this time, I hope Jamin'Jon already saw the Until the Light Takes Us documentary. Best way to get Black Metal at its essence.
My ranking:
1. A Blaze in the Northern Sky
2. Old Star
3. Eternal Hails
4. Panzerfaust
5. The Underground Resistance
6. Soulside Journey
7. Under a Funeral Moon
8. Transilvanian Hunger
9. Ravishing Grimness
10. Arctic Thunder
11. Sardonic Wrath
12. Total Death
13. Circle the Wagons
14. Dark Thrones and Black Flags
15. Hate Them
16. F.O.A.D.
17. Plaguewielder
18. The Cult is Alive
19. Goatlord
Would you guys consider playing a few short tracks of each album you discuss? It would help listeners unfamiliar with the band being reviewed.
Necrotic Nick- Every time we've tried that we've been tagged by copyright so we just avoid it now. I'm sure all these albums are on UA-cam though.
I love you guys, but damn haha. Can I guest in as a black metal pundit?
You guys should rank all 314 Buckethead albums hahahaha jk that would be literally impossible. Also I love that Hellripper shirt 🤘
-Insert "Fucking Embarrassing" gif here- 😂😂😂
Much love to you guys.
1 A blaze in the northern Sky
2 Eternal hails even though it wasn't made when this aired it's just f#@king disgusting and doomy and evil
3 Artic thunder
4 under a funeral moon
5 Panzerfoust
6 Soulside journey
7 Transylvania hunger
8 Old Star
9 Ravishing Grimness
10 Circle The Wagons
11 Underground Resistance
12 Total Death
13 Hate them
14 sardonic wrath
15 dark thrones and black flags
16 Plaguewielder
17 F.O.A.D
18 The cult is Alive
19 Goatlord
This is my ranking and this wasn't easy when their is so many amazing records
Great Stuff as always, lets get an Exodus discography ranking
Necrotic Nick- We're waiting on that new album to drop before we throw them in the mix. I definitely want to do that one though.
These guys are great
5. Plagueweilder
4. Hate Them
3. Under a Funeral Moon
2. Panzerfaust
1. A Blaze in the Northern Sky
Panzerfaust is one of my all time favorite vocal performances.
Put on one song from Transilvanian Hunger and it's cool, two songs and it gets kind of dull.
Necrotic Nick- I loved the vocals on Panzerfaust. I think the drunk take make them even more unrestrained and raw honestly.
Love Leave no Cross unturned, to me it's like an Agent Steel/Celtic Frost mash up lol
Yes!!! That's an apt comparison.
I totally agree for Ravising, it's a fantastic album
They know that they can doing what they want. That"s Darkthrone. That"s Punk Attitude. Old punks like me like a lot..
Love Hardship of the Scots but Darkside of Aquarius was the first thing I thought too when I heard that riff
awesome video archgoat ranking
Necrotic Nick- Possibly. We'll see what the future holds.
Imagine what a joke video this would be if shredlord was not in the video 😂
The barman in my local pub has been known to rock a darkthrone shirt. Make sure I get served by him when I go in there lol
Don't wait for progressions etc, you're not listening to 'Soulside Journey', you're on one ;)
Try that and upload an update.
A real fun Episode guys👍
And i wouldnt argue with any if your approaches.
Good stuff any plans for a overkill ranking?
Necrotic Nick- I think they're getting ready to record their 20th album actually so we may have to wait for them to drop that first.
