I'm not sure that follows. Jesus can be the only way to salvation, but I would argue that he can cast his net as wide as he wants. Indeed, God is sovereign and I have no doubt that if he so wished he could save everyone. I'm certain he will gather more people into his many mansions than some "narrow is the way" Protestants may believe....

@@royquick-s5nYes, sorry, I don't think I was very clear. I was simply making the point that just because Jesus is *the only* way to the Father, it does not follow that we can be clear who will/will not be saved, as if there were some simple formula ("Recite this prayer and you will be saved"). As you say, God has given guidance in Scripture, but also hints at a wider salvation in various places. Some Christians seem to positively*want* a narrow view but I don't believe it to be necessary or Scriptural.

Great episode! I love hearing your views on the Catholic news. Lots of us Catholics are unhappy with Francis. He's been at this for years. Sadly, many Catholics don't take an interest in 'high level' stuff, and remain blissfully ignorant of what is going on at the Vatican. But as you point out, the traditional voices are ever louder, thank goodness.
Brett Murphy - hmmm! While I support him in his ongoing issues with the FCE, he doesn’t do himself any favours, does he? Free speech is a wonderful thing, but when you have two children and a pregnant wife, I would dare to suggest that a bit of wisdom is in order. I flatly don't believe that God has told him to say all this stuff - but he seems almost to be enjoying being some sort of martyr. This ain't right when your choices result in your wife and kids becoming homeless! I speak from painful experience, having grown up with parents who claimed that God was telling them to go somewhere new every 2-3 years, regardless of the wreckage caused in their children's lives. Frankly, while it looks as if there has been a failure of process in his sacking, he could really do with showing a bit more maturity in his choices. I'll get off my soapbox now 🙄.

Thanks for the show - I agree with just about every word of it, but I wonder if you agree with me here? When explaining that church leadership is male, St Paul focused on God’s created order - ‘Adam was formed first, then Eve’ - indicating that male headship should be for all places and all times. He affirmed male headship in stating that ‘the man is head of the woman, even as Christ is head of the church’ - then going on to say that ‘wives should submit… to their husbands’. Men should not then submit to someone else’s wife who becomes a ‘bishop’.
In approaching Eve, the serpent intentionally set about subverting the God-given order before going on to question the word of God, contradict the word of God, and suggest to the woman that she could be like God. She took the lead and Adam, the man, followed in an act of sinful rebellion. And that’s the issue here from start to finish - rebellion. It’s as the sin of something or other.

That’s sort of what I copied from another persons years ago, here it is
“The most important book in the OT is Genesis, in it we discover what God is like, how he created the world, how he relates to humanity, and what happened at the beginning. Genesis is the foundation on which Christian doctrine is built. This is certainly true when we come to 1 Timothy 2:11-15. Here we find Paul explaining his commands concerning a women's activity in the Christian gathering. His reason for not permitting women to teach or exercise authority over a man arises out of the account of creation and the fall. So before piecing together Paul's argument, one must look at the Genesis account.
      1. In Genesis 1:28:28 "man" is made to rule the earth and all the creatures in it. Explain whether this refers to the male alone, or the male and the female ? Clearly v 26 refers to male n female.
      2. So why was women created ? Gen 2:15-25. To compliment her man, neither stronger or weaker, a unity becoming one flesh.
      3. So describe the authority relationship between God, Adam, the woman, and the rest of creation ?
God created Adam then eve as Adams helper and both to rule over creation.
      4. There are 3 cases of authority being overthrown in the passage Gen 3:1-19
And 3 sets of consequences, what are they ?
      A. Serpent is out of order and deceitful, consequences are enmity between satan n God, so therefore God will provide a head crusher.
      B) eve convinces Adam to eat the apple, consequence is childbearing pains, sorrow and husband will rule over you.
      C) Adam should have submitted to Gods Authority, consequences- he has to work hard to provide, hence much joy is removed.
      5. So then read 1 Tim 2:11-15.
Clearly man and women are EQUAL though have DIFFERENT qualities, but both are saved in the same way as they persevere in their faith to carry out the Lords calling in their life, one example being the unique of women in childbearing.
      6. so what is the basis for Paul's command ? Creation ordinance >eternal principles>headship>submission within a church.
Clearly the argument in 1 Timothy has 3 threads that have been picked up by Paul from Genesis: firstness, deception and the difficulties of childbirth.”

@@robmarshall956 The Old Testament is a record of the preparation for the New Testament, which contains an account of the life of Jesus and a commentary on it. As Bishop Frank E. Wilson stated, "The Bible is important because of Christ--not the other way around." For the Christian, it would seem, the Old Testament should be read in the light of the New Testament, especially Jesus' teachings and example, e.g. Jesus' saying, "And as you wish that men do to you, do so to them." Lk 6.31-32.

@@royquick-s5nwait up Roy I haven’t put the comment up it keeps disappearing)
      1. Firstness v13
Paul says women have the position they do because Adam was formed first. "Firstness often carries connotations of authority in scripture, as it does in our own use of language eg prime minister simply means the "first minister".
So what can be said is there is an order to creation, God could have created Adam simultaneously, but he didn't. He created Eve for Adam. She was created to be mans "helper" and was made perfectly suitable for the task. This is absolutely key to understanding her relationship to Adam.
      2. Deception v 14
Gen 3:13 records the woman confessing "the serpent deceived me, and I ate" Adam is clearly not described as being deceived: RATHER, his sin is that he "listened to the voice of his wife and ate of the tree" 3:17.
So why is eves deception significant? Well Eve was deceived by one of the animals that God had made, OVER whom she was meant to be in dominion, refer to Gen 1:26:28.
This was why she "became a sinner"-not because she was silly or gullible enough to be fooled, but Because SHE WAS DECEIVED into overturning the good order that God had created. Instead of ruling the snake under God, she listened to and Obeyed the snake, attempted to become like God and then lead her husband to do the same.
Sooo as God pronounces judgment in Gen 3, the overturned order is emphasised in the way he deals first with the serpent, then with the woman and then with man. In the cursed and FALLEN world, the good order of chapter 2 becomes distorted and bitter- the serpent will attack the woman's offspring and be crushed under his heel; the woman will attempt to master the man, but he will be dominated by him instead; and the man, rather than ruling and tending a bountiful garden, will gain his food by sweat from a hostile earth.
There is an order to Gods creation; there is a structure to the relationships between men and women that is built into the very fabric of things. God made Adam first and Eve to be his helper, and both to rule over the rest of the creation. The very essence of Adam and Eves sin was their overturning of this order yet here many are trying to do just that again ?????
So before looking at the 3rd theme in Genesis (childbirth) review the first 2. Obviously when one compares Gen 2-3 with 1 Timothy 2, the relationship between the two passages is not difficult to see. Women are being warned NOT to upset the order of creation by usurping authority in the manner that Eve did. What we find more difficult to understand is why this should be expressed through teaching in the church, and what it is about teaching that makes Paul single it out as the authority issue, so do women have to be utterly silent and not say a word in Christian gatherings ??
The answer to that rests in our understanding of what "teaching" is. People tend to think of teaching as merely an intellectual activity- imparting knowledge or giving instruction to someone. However, in the Bible and indeed in other fields as well, teaching involves a special type of relationship between the teacher and the student.
Christian teaching involves authority. The teacher moulds the life of the taught: the teacher is given the privilege and responsibility of guiding, informing, persuading, changing and leading. This is why teaching and authority are so closely tied together in 1 Tim 2:12. To be in a teaching relationship with someone is to be exercising some sort of Authority over him or her.
Under Christ's authority, and through his word to us in 1 Tim 2:11-12, we are told that woman ought not to teach or have this authority over men. Teaching a man is wrong because by teaching him, the woman enters into a relationship of authority over him. By teaching the man, the woman is falling into Eve's error- turning the order of creation upside down. Teaching is the flip side of learning "quietly with all submissiveness" v11. Eve's sin involved overturning the order of creation and teaching her husband !!. Similarly, Adams sin came from listening to his wife in the sense of heeding and following her instructions. He allowed himself to be taught by her, thereby putting himself under her authority and reversing Gods good ordering of creation.
This biblical teaching may seem hard, especially in a society where women aim for, and often achieve, authority over men. But this isn't talking about a position as CEO of a company or a womens capacity in that regard, it's about how the church is to be run. We have to trust that any unhappiness with this instruction springs from our mistrust in the Goodness of Gods word. The word seems far less terrible if
      1. We believe in Gods goodness and that he wants the best for us.
      2. We don't see quietness and full submission as weakness, but as meekness- not as a demeaning and pathetic thing, but rather as a Holy and life affirming response to how God has created the world.
      3. We recognise that Christ is our teacher, AND that he has ordained through his word that men and women relate this way.
So then that leaves theme 3 ( childbirth) v15
This verse sounds unusual upon first reading. It appears to be saying that childbirth has something to do with a woman's salvation, it seems to run contrary to the understanding that we are saved only though the death of Jesus Christ, which takes away our sins. It also seems to say that a woman's good works - her "faith and love and holiness, with self control"- somehow contribute to her salvation. Sooo what is this verse actually saying?
      So read Gen 3:15-16, 1 Corinthians 11:11-12, 1 Tim 5:9-10 and Rev 12:1-6
So having mentioned Eves sin in 1 tim 2:14, Paul seems to be making it clear in v15 that women certainly can be saved. Their salvation is strangely expressed- "through child bearing"- but it is surely promised. There are 3 ways one can understand that verse.
      1. Christian woman will not die during the birth of a child, well since Paul uses the verb "saved" in a spiritual sense referring to redemption, that understanding of the verse is unlikely. It's also not in order with the more immediate context in which salvation by the gospel is on view in verses 3-7.
      2. That salvation comes through the birth of the Child. Paul may be saying that women, like everyone else, are saved from sin through Jesus, who was born of a woman. It may be pointing to Gen 3:15, where it is promised that Eves son will crush the serpents head. If the woman continues as a believer, with faith, love and holiness, she shares in the salvation secured by the Son of Eve. This interpretation comes from understanding salvation in a spiritual sense, as it ties it to Christ and fits in with the context of v 14-15.
      3. Women will be saved by bearing children, parts of 1 Tim describe the lifestyle of a Christian woman (2:9-15, 5:3-16) in that it involves propriety, submission, hospitality, good deeds and having children. Motherhood in other words, is a good deed of a godly woman. It is an expression of living a Holy life in faith and love. V 15 could be saying that by having children and raising them well, a woman "works out" her salvation, akin to Philippians 2:12-13. It is not that she must bear children I order to be saved, but that bringing up children is a godly way for a saved woman to live. This again takes the word 'saved' in a spiritual sense and fits nicely with the context of v9-14 also noting the repetition of 'self-control' in v's 9 and 15. This also fits with Paul's teaching elsewhere in 1 tim 5:14 and Titus 2:4-5, where childhood are seen as a godly path of life for the Christian woman.
It's difficult to discern between the latter two understandings as both are consistent with other teachings in 1 Tim and in the rest of the bible. Both fit the context of 1 Tim 2:9-15 and both point in the direction of Christ and living a life that pleases him.
So all that being said is Paul dealing with a specific problem in Ephesus at the time of Paul's writing ? Clearly not as it spans all time and is about eternity not just Ephesus, it is clearly a continuum of Gods creation and word.
Is it saying that women should never teach anyone, because they are easily deceived ? No because it says women may teach women and children, it's just saying women were not to teach man from the pulpit.
Is it saying Paul doesn't like women ? Well clearly no it as Paul is following Gods word.
Is it saying well uno things are quite different now because women are better educated and on an equal standing with men in society's eyes ? No, as things have not changed in Gods world.
The teaching in 1 Timothy 2:18-15 has implications today and those that seek to implement their own agenda are not being obedient to Gods word and his instructions to his church and we all know how that worked out for Adam and Eve xx

I think when something is written in the Bible, we should be careful how we debate it. Looking closely, it's apparent that the pushing of women ordination rose sharply up parallel to the feminist movement. The Church failed to discern the craftness of the devil. The Church is different from the world, and the feminist movement was not of God ~ it was about swapping the roles instead of fairness. We were created for different roles, and the Church should not fall under pressure by social norms.
God created us, women differently in that we women are emotional beings. We do things differently because of that. For example we love beautiful things and we tend to not look beyond when we are taken in with beautiful things. That is why we are good homemakers.
Going back to Eve, Paul wrote that it was not Adam who was deceived but Eve. Eve fell under the beauty of the forbidden tree and reasoned that it was good to eat. Adam on the other hand abandoned his roll to protect his wife and passively stood by.
We must acknowledge that all Churches that have women in Church leadership now have the fruit of liberalism. The LGBTQetc community deeply uses emotions to gain favour and their message does not depend on reason and godly submission to God, but their emotions that attract women ministers to compromise the Gospel. This is a naked truth. Unless the Church look their sin in the eye and repent, nothing is left but total collapse of the Church. God will raise up other voices that are obedient to Him. But as it were there are always "old Prophets" that await in shadows to try to destroy them.

@@royquick-s5n The debate may be great. The issue remains, did God speak? If He did, then let God remain true and any opposition a lie. I was in my teens when this issue of ordination of women was being discussed. I was too young, to green and incidentally a norminal christian as such to care much until I gave my life to Christ. I do recall that whenever I read Paul on this matter uneasy feeling came over me but "trusted" the judgement of the Church. Now I am past my middle age and I watching with dismay as dead Churches line up one by one in full brown rebellion, mostly led by gays or transgender women and we ask ourselves why the world is mad.

It is so difficult to understand why Priests & Bishops in the C of E behave in such an ant Christian way by their actions to deny the Holy Scriptures . Why do women want to be Priests is it just an equality thing or is it that they don’t understand the demands of Holy Scripture on the value of men & women which is not the same but complimentary if that is the correct phrase. Why would a self confessed Christian deny the teachings of Our Blessed Lord and his Apostles? Maybe they are just ignorant of their important role in life and the Church.

When talking about immigrants, I didn't hear you mention Republicans turning down an agreement they had with Democrats on immigration. because that's what Trump told them to do. (Do you think that's true?) I am sure it wasn't perfect or something that would satisfy everyone but let us know what you found so unacceptable about it. Also, I'd like to hear your comments on the threats of violence that occurred in Springfield, Ohio due to Trump's claims about immigrants there. By the way, Charleroi, PA had some fallout from Trump's comments also. You could have driven down there from Latrobe. It's less than an hour away. The Democrats deal said that laws would only be enforced after 3,500 people a day had entered illegally. That's one million, three hundred thousand people a year before the lawless Biden administration promises to try to begin to enforce the country's laws, and fulfill their oaths to enforce laws enacted democratically by Congress. That's surrender now, with an empty promise for later.

A point to note in the Pope Francis quote regarding 'all religions arrive at God': Maybe he was indicating that those who have a belief in God, or a God, acknowledge an existence of God, and that we cannot dismiss the possibility that there may be elements of divine revelation contained within these alternative belief systems. Note, the Pope does not mention here the all important aspect of salvation. He speaks of different avenues arriving at God, but not that they may lead to salvation. I firmly believe that the Bible is the only true source of the divinely inspired word of God which reveals the true nature of God and the fallen nature of humanity which can only be saved (in order to achieve our goal of eternal life) through faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, he is the only guaranteed way to eternal life, not forgetting that Jesus Christ is in fact God incarnate. So, in effect. it is faith in God - as revealed in the Christian faith alone - that assures our redemption and salvation. No other religion offers, or even accepts that. Yes, we are all God's children, but Gods urgent message is that we all need embrace and accept Christ's sacrifice and repent of our sins in order to become right with God. But what about all those millions of people who lived before the arrival of Jesus? What about all the decent, loving, caring people that may have led honest, charitable lives? Or what about the mentally impaired? Are they all damned and to be thrown into the depths of hell? Of course not. We can all take comfort in knowing that God is merciful, loving, compassionate and righteous, and that we can trust in His final judgement and blessing, just as He revealed to Abraham many years before the arrival of Jesus.
