  • This video shows never-before seen footage of a deep-sea angler fish, Chaunacops coloratus. In it, we summarize recent work by scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The video seen here was recorded by MBARI's ROV Doc Ricketts at depths of 7,800 - 10,800 feet below the ocean's surface. For more information please see MBARI's news release at www.mbari.org/n....

For those wondering why "illicium" and "esca", illicium comes from illicio which means "entice" and esca means "food" or "bait".

While C. coloratus isn't exactly the Michael Phelps of the deep sea, the speed of this fish is pretty quick relative to its small size (they're on average 8 inches long). This fish's initial burst of speed is actually faster than the average speed that was reported. C. coloratus also swims straight up, so the direction of travel acts to confuse any predator that approaches. It can probably outmaneuver larger predators, since it will have a smaller turning radius than a bigger fish or shark.

Deep ocean water has a very low temperature, typically from 0 °C (32 °F) to 3 °C (37 °F), and a salinity of about 3.5% (35 ppt). The average ocean salinity is 35 ppt. This number varies between about 32 and 37 ppt. Rainfall, evaporation, river runoff, and ice formation cause the variations at the surface. It is important to measure temperature, salinity and oxygen levels of the water where an animal is collected if we are going to try to keep it alive in the lab.

These fish do not have any gas bladders, therefore, no air spaces. As we slowly ascend with the ROV, most deep sea animals have no problem adjusting to the ambient pressure. To keep deep sea animals alive in the lab, it is important to keep them in a dark environment. Also, it is important to keep the temperature and oxygen content of the water at levels to which they are accustomed.

Male Anglerfish are tiny, actually referred to by scientists as "puny".
They tend to be mere centimeters long.

@@BL3SSed-Bliss That happens mostly in suborder Ceratioidei, but this is a Chaunacops coloratus, so I don't think they have sexual dimorphism like that.
And many species of fish change sex as they grow. So who knows, maybe they can choose their gender freely millions of years before humans.

The binomial nomenclature & taxonomic terms used to describe animals & plants are largely derived from Latin and Greek words. At the time when biologist Carolus Linnaeus published the books which are now accepted as the starting point of modern systematics, Latin was used in Western Europe as the common language of science. Scientific names were, therefore, in Latin or Greek: Linnaeus continued this practice. Illicium means 'that which entices' in Latin. Esca means 'to eat' in Latin.

We used mitochondrial DNA fragments (COI, CytB, and ND4), and two rRNA fragments (16S and 12S) to perform phylogenetic analyses. Tissue from two collected specimens was prepared and used for molecular/phylogenetic analysis.
