Fishing in the deep: observations of a deep-sea anglerfish

- This video shows never-before seen footage of a deep-sea angler fish, Chaunacops coloratus. In it, we summarize recent work by scientists at Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, and Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. The video seen here was recorded by MBARI's ROV Doc Ricketts at depths of 7,800 - 10,800 feet below the ocean's surface. For more information please see MBARI's news release at www.mbari.org/n....
That's the cutest deep sea angler I've seen oO
It is a paid actor
For those wondering why "illicium" and "esca", illicium comes from illicio which means "entice" and esca means "food" or "bait".
While C. coloratus isn't exactly the Michael Phelps of the deep sea, the speed of this fish is pretty quick relative to its small size (they're on average 8 inches long). This fish's initial burst of speed is actually faster than the average speed that was reported. C. coloratus also swims straight up, so the direction of travel acts to confuse any predator that approaches. It can probably outmaneuver larger predators, since it will have a smaller turning radius than a bigger fish or shark.
Deep ocean water has a very low temperature, typically from 0 °C (32 °F) to 3 °C (37 °F), and a salinity of about 3.5% (35 ppt). The average ocean salinity is 35 ppt. This number varies between about 32 and 37 ppt. Rainfall, evaporation, river runoff, and ice formation cause the variations at the surface. It is important to measure temperature, salinity and oxygen levels of the water where an animal is collected if we are going to try to keep it alive in the lab.
These fish do not have any gas bladders, therefore, no air spaces. As we slowly ascend with the ROV, most deep sea animals have no problem adjusting to the ambient pressure. To keep deep sea animals alive in the lab, it is important to keep them in a dark environment. Also, it is important to keep the temperature and oxygen content of the water at levels to which they are accustomed.
She's adorable.
Seal Girl I know
DID YOU JUST ASSUME ITS GENDER??? #Triggered

Male Anglerfish are tiny, actually referred to by scientists as "puny".
They tend to be mere centimeters long.
_The More You Know_ 🌈🌠
@@BL3SSed-Bliss That happens mostly in suborder Ceratioidei, but this is a Chaunacops coloratus, so I don't think they have sexual dimorphism like that.
And many species of fish change sex as they grow. So who knows, maybe they can choose their gender freely millions of years before humans.
0:48: *Slowly advances towards the fish with a giant tube*
I thought it was gonna be sucked up
The binomial nomenclature & taxonomic terms used to describe animals & plants are largely derived from Latin and Greek words. At the time when biologist Carolus Linnaeus published the books which are now accepted as the starting point of modern systematics, Latin was used in Western Europe as the common language of science. Scientific names were, therefore, in Latin or Greek: Linnaeus continued this practice. Illicium means 'that which entices' in Latin. Esca means 'to eat' in Latin.
We used mitochondrial DNA fragments (COI, CytB, and ND4), and two rRNA fragments (16S and 12S) to perform phylogenetic analyses. Tissue from two collected specimens was prepared and used for molecular/phylogenetic analysis.
10 years later, and this little guy is practically famous amongst deep sea ROV enthusiasts.
I've never seen an angler like that
The esca is the part that acts as a lure - it's "fishing rod"!
amazing how clear and vivid the picture is for that depth
Angler fish are cool. Keep up the interesting research.
7 feet per minute. Dizzying!
7 feet per minute???? Good lord, how can the human eye even observe such speeds?? That's only slightly slower than the blisteringly fast speed of smell, and WAY faster than the agile escargot.
I like to watch All the species of the deep sea , really thanks mbari for presenting them
That's pretty quick for being so deep in the water.
Thank you. You are direct and to the point. Can a coffinfish really hold its breath for 4 minutes ?
I love this chanel
Thanks!
Why were the names 'esca' and 'illicium' chosen, over, say, 'lure' and 'rod' ?
Trollygag cause those names work in every language while lure and bait work only in one language
correct me if I'm wrong (seriously) but isn't "deep sea"...well...DEEP SEA?! Just asking because there IS a difference between deep sea anglers and regular ones
7 feet per minute? who will it be escaping from at that speed?
thanks a lot ;-)
Please use international units.
There is this in Morocco
Dakhla
Finally one of your videos without all that bullshit ass music and all that bullcrap!
We don't need that crappy ass music
i love your channel !
He's so darn cute, and he's got KNEES!! AHHHH
The return of Chauncey! 😄
This is AWESOME
what kind of modern molecular tools are you refering to? How did you get a DNA sample from it? Thanks for the awesome videos btw.
Great burst of speed. 7 ft per minute XD
If your not joking, I think this very cool
7 feet per min? That's not that fast...
Do you have to keep them at a higher salanity level than fish that live in the shallow ocean?
Amazing
so it was an esca
Will they survive in the pressure of shallow water?
Can you get some footage of the Blob fish?. There is absolutely no videos on UA-cam or the web about them.
2:33
"at depths of 7,500 - nearly 11,000 ft"
subtitles:
"at depths of 7,500 - nearly *18,000* ft"
It's a toung twister, "Chna-Kosp-Colaradas"
These ones don't look as frightening as the ones you see in the bentic region.
Was thinking the same!! It darts up at great speed of..... That is def. not great speed!
But does it blend?
1:30 yeah it's adorable.
AWESOME
This is cool
how do they taste?
They're soo pretty!
First thing I noticed, it’s fins reminds me of feet.
If it goes any faster it might explode due to the change of pressure.
Star fish?
7 ft per minute? How is that impressive?
7 feet per minute!!!??? Erm..... thats not exactly "fast".
Are you sure you didn't mean per second?
Imagine if the anglerfish walked on land, what would happen...
l never sin a angler fish is so red
What's the size of those cuties?
yeah my question too
Please you are scientists use metrical cientific mesuarement!
Please, you are hopefully intelligent, spell correctly.
It’s a frogfish (type of anglerfish)
It's the Hanklerfish!
kawaiiii
GJ!
the light. It burns
I'm sorry to be that guy but "7 ft per minute" isn't a really scientific unit
isent that rare
Who's a cute widdle fishy?!
🧡❤❤
:O it's body looks like a balloon.
It look cute 😍🥺🥰
Its eyes look human..
Yes yes, that is all well and good. But how does it taste?!
this is an angler fish but not a deep sea angler fish
' ' 'Hi' ' '
u r too
lol
Who would want to eat it
Physically, there environment is ocean. But, between both warm, and cold blooded fish, an angler fish is cold. They eat people also, so maybe your off limits to down deep in sea culture. Class 504 Teacher: Mrs. Mederios learned by a sea biome
moar!
قورباغه دریایی
you think this IS very cool.... one day... you'll grow up. don't worry..
DFTBA :)
