What creatures live in the "Midnight Zone" of the deep sea? | Into The Deep

  • Join ‪@MBARIvideo‬'s Senior Scientist Bruce Robison on a dive into the vast midwater of the deep sea-the Midnight Zone!
    This largest living space on Earth lies between our ocean’s sunlit upper layers and the deep seafloor, and Bruce has studied and explored the midnight zone for his entire career. The stories he tells about the discoveries MBARI has made boggle the mind, inspiring awe and wonder about how animals have adapted to this dark, cold, fluid world. Most of these animals don’t look or act like their shallow-water relatives, and have evolved an incredible array of strategies to not only survive in the midnight zone, but thrive there.
    The midnight zone is home to our planet’s largest ecosystems, and the life that thrives there likely outnumbers all other animals on the planet. And yet, we are only beginning to understand this vast ecosystem with each research expedition.
    Stay tuned for more from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and our colleagues at MBARI as we prepare for the launch of the 2022 exhibit, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean."

    Deep thoughts: What adaptation do you think *you* would need to survive in the Midnight Zone? 🤔

    I love these videos so much for so many reasons. Not the least of which is that they are great reference videos for my fish sculptures that I have been working on. Pictures are great but video is so much better as I can see the movements etc. It really helps. :D - Heidi

    0:04 Is that some kind of grenadier/rattail fish? I've never seen one with pelvic fins like that.

    • @MontereyBayAquarium
      @MontereyBayAquarium  3 роки тому +6

      Indeed, that's a juvenile rattail/grenadier! It's thought those extra long fin rays make make the rattail look less like a meal and more like a stinging jelly or other unappetizing morsel!
