Holy S--t, light bulb moment!!! I've been playing this game for 30 years and have never heard a better explanation of how to transfer the weight into the left side, this is simply GOLD! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Chris! Subbed!!!
I thought this was going to be one of those over complicated, technical videos. It is actually the best description of the start of the downswing that I've seen, thank you.
This was great, I have been researching "how to stop swaying in golf downswing" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (do a search on google ) ? It is a great exclusive product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the headache. Ive heard some incredible things about it and my m8 got excellent results with it.

Many thanks, I've been looking for "left arm rotation in golf downswing" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Penamillorn Peerless Prevalence - (do a google search ) ? It is an awesome one off product for discovering how to learn an effective golf swing method minus the hard work. Ive heard some great things about it and my m8 got great results with it.

Absolutely the best way to express the start of the downswing I've ever heard. I was just watching, Nicklaus, Woods, Corey, Zack, Justin Thomas and with everyone of them you can see this collapsing of the left side towards the ground just before they start their shoulder turn towards the target. Fantastic.
I must have been watchning over 100 videos about the downsving. This is the best one, for sure. Now, the shift comes natural without forcing the legs and the hip. Pure gold, thank you! Erik, Stockholm
I've been playing golf since I was 6 and I'm now 36... I've never had a proper lesson but managed to get to 5 handicap.. I'm sometimes inconsistent because I rely on timing, if my timing is off I'm a bit ropey... In all the time I've studied videos and read articles I've never seen the downswing move explained so simply and easy to understand... I feel this is going to help me massively!! The best players squat and pop at impact it seems, thanks Chris this is fantastic!! 👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻
I have used the sensation of ”falling onto the lead side” successfully to initiate the downswing for a number of years. The “unweighting” of the lead side coincides with lifting the lead foot heel in the backswing and then “squashing a grape” with the lead heel to start the motion of falling onto the lead side. Your video is great Chris. Thanks.
I too (contentiously) lift the left heel in the backswing, but thanks, Larry, for the image of "squashing the grape” with the lead heel to start the motion of falling onto the lead side. I'll picture that next time I practice
Best way I've heard this explained.. I've been under the impression of having to use the trail foot and pushing off to force my weight to lead side. Which hasn't been working. After listening to this I feel I have the concept now... now just a matter of executing it lol. Thanks alot for the video
This was an EXCELLENT explanation of 'the move' and how to start it. This is the best (and clearest) explanation of how to start the DS that I have heard. Again, thank you for your excellent insight and instruction!
The concepts 'center of mass' and 'un-weighting' of the left foot are amazing ideas. This really does make the downswing appear easier. Thanks, I will give it a go at the practice range.
Best explanation ever on how to start the downswing. Question, so why not actually lift up the lead leg a touch and then set it down to get that falling on lead side feeling (just before the start of the downswing), something like you see baseball players do.
Excellent. As a connoisseur of golf instruction videos I have seen a lot of golf videos but this is the first time I have seen this explanation of the probably the hardest part of golf. Great thing about this is that I remember the feeling that you describe yet was never able to identify it other than some tempo thing. Yet tempo is something you cannot rely on unlike gravity. Thanks.
That could be the best explanation of how to start the downswing I have seen (and I’ve seen a lot). It’s such a complex subject with so many answers and ‘feels’. Can’t wait to try this.
I’m a left hander playing golf right handed and have always struggled with this move and have started to give up hope of getting it right. ‘Falling onto your lead side’ is the least complicated term I have ever heard for this and once again I have been given me hope of perfecting this by using such a simple feeling. Super video Chris, thank you 👍🏻
Chris. Incredible explanation of how to properly and naturally start the downswing! Nothing forced or manipulated ... just "unweighteing" the lead foot is spectacular. I can hardly wait to try it on the range! Bravo Chris. You are helping me to become a better golfer. Thanks.
Brilliant tip. Ive tried several different triggers and this is the easiest to understand and to initiate, and it works better than all the others too.
Hi Chris I have looked at a great many on line golf coaches of late, and recently found you. You are without doubt the best I have seen. I love how you get into real detail in a completely understandable way. The theory, the drills and explanations are top class. Thank you so much, Colin
This is great instruction. The bane of most amateurs is that they do NOT understand the sequence of events, and therefore "begin" the downswing with an action of the shoulders and arms. It's the classic "casting" move which destroys all chance of a good down-and-through strike. So teaching the initiation being a weight shift is absolutely correct. HOWEVER...that can only happen if the backswing is initiated and controlled by the turning of the body's core. Only by leading the backswing with turning of the core/trunk can the downswing be initiated by the weight transfer and uncoiling of the body/core. The vast majority of golfers initiate the backswing with their hands/arms/shoulders, which puts the core in a FOLLOWING role. If that occurs, what is being taught here will not work. The arms and shoulders MUST follow the turning of the body in the backswing.
"get it correct and so many good things can happen" - I like that. (this is probably too long but....) This isn't just a light bulb going off, it's the sun coming up! I've always had a hard time understanding what it was that I did "correct" when I hit that sweet shot. I've had enough of them to know I can do it but still haven't been able to identify what I did to create it. I can feel it but just don't have a grasp of it. We've all said it and we've all had our buddies say "I know what you mean" when we mention it. Ever since I started down this horrific path of trying to improve my stroke I have been hesitant to move the "center". I think you just cleared up one of my main hinderances. Check me if I got wrong but here's my take - it's ok to move your center of mass as long as it is kept between your feet - let your weight move, don't force your weight into your front leg (your brake) and then released through the shot. Obviously, if your center is still between your feet, you finish in balance. Thanks again, I say that every time but I mean it.
Great explanation! I’ve been struggling to hit draw with driver, started doing this very thing on the range after playing 27 holes with frustration. In about 30 minutes I was smashing drives down the middle, mis hits were going left instead of right. Have felt like so much potential energy was lost to slice shots which equates to lost yardage. I can’t wait to put this to the test on the course. Bar none Chris Ryan is my #1 go to UA-cam instructor, thanks Chris!
Great video Chris. This is exactly what the Athletic Motion Golf Guys and Mike Malaska are saying as well. I also remember Dennis Sheehy telling me when he coached Seve that the great man effectively did a reverse pivot for his irons and wedges. He struggled with his driver because he couldn't apply the pressure back up to his centre of mass as you describe in your driver video, he slid towards the target with his hips. Interesting that Jack lifted his left heel, effectively unweighting the front side.
This is great Chris, we hear a lot about getting the weight to the inside of the right heel in the backswing which essentially 'unweights' the left foot and makes the start of the downswing a natural fall down into the left heel.
Great stuff. whilst I am able to relate to how the backswing should be, I've not been able to get a proper understanding of the start of the downswing until now! your teaching method is second to none.
Thanks for the tips Chris. Mental cues are huge for me. As a baseball player I’ve struggled to find mental cues specifically for golf because my body is so used to the baseball swing. Videos like these really help a lot. Cheers.
Chris! I have never been able to fix an over the top swing I have. Had lessons, practiced and have considered giving game up it got so bad. For some reason this video made how to start my down swing so easy to understand and implement! I just got back from hitting some of the best Irons and drives in years! No joke! Thank you so much for making the video !!!
This concept is fantastic. Its moved my divots from on the ball, or slightly before -> to nicely after the ball. Super! It's also had a side effect of helping me shallow the club more and not initiating the swing with a left shoulder turn (which is my biggest swing fault). I've been using this shift to the right in tandem with a slightly exaggerated drop of the hands (not bringing the club vertical, but more horizontal). I hope that won't get me into trouble. So far this move has been successful since I really struggle with letting the club fall behind me.
Great video. The unweighting and understanding CoP is important. When told to shift into their lead side earlier, most people will push off with their trail foot harder and longer. That obviously keeps the pressure BACK because you are applying pressure with your trail foot. It is an unweighting and downhill fall, not a push from the trail side.
That is exactly what I was doing. In an attempt to get my weight to the left side, I pushed down on my left foot, causing me to go right. "Falling to the left is a Gr8 feel to achieve.
No doubt the most challenging part of the golf swing for most from what I've seen. Great video Chris, going into detail about mass and pressure. Love the practice drill. Cheers, Troy

I'm just back from a 20+ year break and am restarting my practise. I was messing around the other day with my net in the garden and experienced this 'falling' sensation, and thinking that it seemed correct. You are very right about the movement of the best players - it is easier to see nowadays because video slow-mo is so much better than when I was using my VHS player :-) However, from watching tons of Hogan footage and from reading his instruction and comments from others like Jim McLean, it is apparent that he, and others, seem to be more active with pushing off the inside of their right foot - which is a progressson of the 'falling' movement. Indeed Hogans right heel would come off the ground much earlier than a lot of players, starting his very powerful rotation movement. He also seemed to chase the right knee in towards the ball, which is easy to feel as you wind up tension against a slightly kicked in right knee with a wide backswing using your arms and passive hands. When the tension starts to max in that knee, that's the time to react against your continueing backswing and change direction into this 'falling', or chase the knee/press the right foot if you are being more aggressive like Hogan. And lastly he seemed to hit against a more rotated and bent left left - rising slightly from this 'fallen' position, whereas a lot of modern players seem to straighten the left leg, which seems a lot less of a consistent hitting position. Other great swingers like Trevino were similar.
Nice...that's a different explanation on the start of the downswing concept than I've ever heard before. I can literally feel my handicap going down : )
Great way to make more solid contact. This tip has helped me get through the shots, especially with my iron play...boosted my confidence....Thanks Chris 😇
Chris, I really struggle with a slide at the start of my downswing and have watched your video on that. I think this one will also help me to get my left leg stable. Really well explained. I just have to get rid of a habit that has been in my swing for 30 years. Thanks for the great advice.
My course of lessons has just reached this point and your analogy of falling slightly onto the lead side has helped. I was also told to lag the hands at the same time but ran out of time to expand on this. Have I misunderstood or do you teach a drill for this ? Thanks for all your videos they honestly really help.
Great tip, Chris! So far I've only tried this on my family room rug (fortunately for me, no divot), but the feeling is so much more powerful than my normal downswing. Can't wait to try it on the range and the course.
Many thanks Chris. You have a beautiful swing!. I recommend this with the other one in which, with a stick, you demonstrate that you slightly advance on the backswing to make that smooth transition on the backswing. When I am in the course “out of swing” I remember that lesson and the next stroke goes much better. Hope you soon in Finca Cortesin. Please advise as I need to take a couple of lessons with you when back!!
Like your videos. I play off 7 but I believe I have always struggled to transfer my weight to the lead foot correctly and/or at the right time in the downswing swing. I have seen your 'bump' or 'pump' drill followed by hip rotation. Questions: 1. when you bump your weight to the lead foot do your hips and your back remain closed to the target line even if only for a second - I understand they do not open immediately which would leave your weight on your trail foot? 2. Assuming you have planted your lead foot on the ground with 'pressure' do you rely solely on your hip and lead leg to rotate into the impact position and beyond? Or do you use your trail knee and trail foot (eg. pushing off your trail foot) to help transfer your lower half and weight down the target line? A friend (handicap 2) says to really throw the trail knee down the target line and to "shake hands" with the lead knee - agree or disagree? 3. When you "unweight the lead side" do you transfer most of your weight into the trail heel or is your weight centred between the heels of both feet? Sorry its long! Thanks again for your very interesting videos.
I've been struggling with fat shots, really fat shots, lately and I believe, whilst ruining my back lawn (let's hope the missus doesn't see it!), that I've been really lacking in getting the weight forward in the downswing. I've been so focused on staying central with my mass, that I've been stuck there both back and down. I will try this feel and see how I get on. Early signs in the backyard are promising.
OH, I CAN REMEMBER FALLING ON THE LEAD SIDE! Thanks so much. However, I'm guessing that the 'center of mass' of the body is much lower. Not that negates your great video. Cheers!
Chris, I've used this video in my practice sessions and it's really helping with more consistency. However, I would like to ask you to put one video together that deals specifically with the "hands" during the start of the downswing. One of the issues that I have is the "chronic slice" or left to right ball flight. I play the draw to avoid the "slice" that rears it's ugly head during my rounds. I hope you can understand my comment and hope to see your response soon. How much "grip hand" pressure should I Apply on the Handle during start of the "downswing"
I just hit a bucket of balls having this tip in mind. Hit much better, however, to add to this video. Can you explain when you are “hitting the break” with that lead leg? I think that was causing me some mishits. Overall, helped me a ton to get that downswing started.
Another excellent video Chris. I have a question : as a senior golfer, it’s impossible for me to keep my left arm (lead arm) ramrod straight or even close to it. Do you have a video for how guys like me need to adjust for this lack of flexibility? Many thanks.
Thanks Chris another great video. What triggers the start of the downswing or feeling of falling? It looks like your arms, but I think you have said the hips lead the body and arms.
Great video again Chris, my question would be if the contact is 'fat' would that mean my center mass is still over my right leg and not shifting across quick enough?
Hey Chris. Do you copy this same motion with your driver? I know that with irons you're wanting to compress the ball and to do that you need to lead the club and have that weight transferred to the lead foot but with a driver you're wanting to swing more up and thru the ball. So are you still wanting to unweight the lead side or keep it more neutral? Thank you for the help and all the videos. Great content here!!
Holy S--t, light bulb moment!!! I've been playing this game for 30 years and have never heard a better explanation of how to transfer the weight into the left side, this is simply GOLD! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you Chris! Subbed!!!

Very good tip! Helped me a lot to get the downswing started in a very natural way. Thanks!
Excellent explanation! I love the idea of falling onto the lead foot. I have a tendency of bumping my hip and that is not consistent.
Chris like all great teachers you have made what seems complex, simple. Well done!
Thanks David appreciate that, hope the video helps
This could be a game changer!
Thanks Chris
Excellent advice on falling left. Best explanation ever!
If I had unlisted recourses, I would move to your part of the world for a few months and retain your teaching skills to push up my game. Great videos!
Thanks Rex, hopefully the videos can continue to help 👍
Great lesson Chris! Nice work 👍
Thanks Adam

When the tension starts to max in that knee, that's the time to react against your continueing backswing and change direction into this 'falling', or chase the knee/press the right foot if you are being more aggressive like Hogan. And lastly he seemed to hit against a more rotated and bent left left - rising slightly from this 'fallen' position, whereas a lot of modern players seem to straighten the left leg, which seems a lot less of a consistent hitting position. Other great swingers like Trevino were similar.
THIS VIDEO. thanks a million Chris!
Watch this video now before every round! Basic and things I can focus on when not striking it well! Thx
Best youtube coach out of all, good job Chris.
Thanks
This is the type of lesson I love, clear swing thoughts.
Gamechanging....I hope :) This is the clearest concept on the subject that I have seen. Well done!
Nice...that's a different explanation on the start of the downswing concept than I've ever heard before. I can literally feel my handicap going down : )
Perfect! Let’s hope it does, hope the practice goes well
Great lesson, you provide such good insight of what the club travel should be to what the body should be doing doing. Keep it up.
you are such a good instructor, easy to understand and really helps.
Thanks Daniel
Excellent video very well explained. 200k subscribers for a reason. Great job Chris
Great way to make more solid contact. This tip has helped me get through the shots, especially with my iron play...boosted my confidence....Thanks Chris 😇
Thanks a lot! Fantastic explanation, I was following your moves and it is so much better now!
Terrific stuff here Chris!
Thanks, for a really good way to make the correct move back!
Understanding is my thing. It makes sense, will watch more, keep going.
Chris, I really struggle with a slide at the start of my downswing and have watched your video on that. I think this one will also help me to get my left leg stable. Really well explained. I just have to get rid of a habit that has been in my swing for 30 years. Thanks for the great advice.
Nice one chris well explained ...off to the range
Great concept of how it should feel. I remember seeing Padraig Harrington actually lifting his lead foot to initiate the down swing.
My course of lessons has just reached this point and your analogy of falling slightly onto the lead side has helped. I was also told to lag the hands at the same time but ran out of time to expand on this. Have I misunderstood or do you teach a drill for this ? Thanks for all your videos they honestly really help.
Very clear, logical and precise. Thank you
I like this, Easy Method, now it is game on, thank you
You are pure quality mate!
Great tip, Chris! So far I've only tried this on my family room rug (fortunately for me, no divot), but the feeling is so much more powerful than my normal downswing. Can't wait to try it on the range and the course.
I'm amazed at how you are able to keep your left hand straight as you wind up for your swing.
Thank you for this great method. This method helped me to have a solid ball contact.
Great to hear Marco
Thanks Christ, it is a good detail down swing lesson
This is mint! Very clear explanation! Well done!
You are a golf scientist actually ❤️❤️
Great video Chris. Noticed Rickie Fowler was doing something like that drill in a tournament recently.
Forward, down and then release is the best advise for pure irons. Great lesson. You need to come to oz.
love this Chris great explanation as always thanks
Thanks Mark
fantastic video! I'm really trying to feel these cues. My lead knee sometimes pivots to point backwards in the takeaway. Should I resist this?
Awesome video, can practice at home before going to range or course 👍🏻
Excellent! Thanks for clearing this up for me.
Great drill Chris, will try this. Is there a video for the approach to the impact position and the hip movement?
this is what i have been trying to work on so a very timely lesson... thanks.
Hope it helps Neil
Beautiful swing!
OH, I CAN REMEMBER FALLING ON THE LEAD SIDE! Thanks so much. However, I'm guessing that the 'center of mass' of the body is much lower. Not that negates your great video. Cheers!
Excellent video.
Thank you.
This is incredibly well explained! Cant wait to try this!
Chris,
I've used this video in my practice sessions and it's really helping with more consistency.
Just when I was going to ask you how to get the "arrows" in the start of the downswing going the right way, I find this one. Svengali. :-)
Great video, Chris!
Thanks Chris another great video. What triggers the start of the downswing or feeling of falling? It looks like your arms, but I think you have said the hips lead the body and arms.
Lovely, i was also expecting you would talk about hands drop.perhaps net time. Thank you
The information very well presented!
Great training video. It really helped me straight away. (In my living room practice) Thanks!
cecil playing 45years this is the best tip on starting downswing does it appy to driver
Great video again Chris, my question would be if the contact is 'fat' would that mean my center mass is still over my right leg and not shifting across quick enough?
Great explanation, makes a lot of sense
Chris, another great actionable tip! What are your thoughts about movement of the rib cage and engaging the glutes in the downswing?
Light bulb moment? More like a light house moment! Great lesson Chris. Thanks
Well explained, Thank-you
