I have the Yamaha R-N1000A ... it is powerful and pushes out crystal clear sound through my speakers. My Speaker cable is BARE END wired into the amp, I suggest you try that !
Excellent review! When these units were first introduced, I knew they wouldn’t have the nuts to drive my Dynaudios. I have always been a separates guy. These units remind me of a cheap AV receiver. And if I was really going to nit pick, I do not like the display in the front. Made of cheap plastic, and when cleaned of dust, it will scratch. That really pisses me off. Thank you!

I mainly listen to rock, hard rock, and metal music either on vinyl or hi-res flac files on my Cambridge CNX100. I'm pumping through a set of Fluance reference floor speakers. I have no sub and I've never once thought I didn't have enough bass. This amp easily gets those speakers thumping and they sound absolutely amazing. I've had amps in the 70s, 80s, and even a more modern Marantz I just got rid of. This is by far the best amp I've ever heard.
Not really, just cause someone else doesn't like it doesn't mean that we don't still love it and think its one of the best amps made at this price point in quite a while.

Especially on a topic of something that is 100% subjective such as the way something sounds. I have this amp and it sounds phenomenal to me and I would say this review is 100% BS. Someone else might not share the same view because they have different taste in sound. I actually bought one and tried it, and for me, this is the best amp I have ever heard in my 51 years on this planet. I don't just jump on bandwagons and bash products without ever owning or hearing them like a lot of people do when they see a video like this.

Interesting review, I like the sound of these Yamahas and considering all the features including the streamer I consider it a good bang for your buck, as a all in one box 👍🏻 but I get what you are saying separates usually sound better. Keep in mind these lower tier Yamahas often go on sale
Only issue is they’re not aware(or ignored) of similar sound quality and more intuitive app system can be had for less than $500, that’s the problem with big name brands.

Nice review, everything you said was correct. Im returning the Yamaha as its mid bass and lower bass is very weak in my room and on my Kef R7s. The soundstage sounds congested to me as well.
That is what I am not seeing in this conversation is a suggestion of a better way to get this capability at this price point. Adding a DAC to this unit improves almost all of the criticisms mentioned here. But people seem ok with adding streamers etc to other solutions and not seeing the irony of their criticism

Right so it’s ok to add a streamer to another unit but we can’t add a DAC to this unit? Isn’t that similar consideration? I use a phono amp I already had with this unit and I use the Direct setting. It’s phenomenal.

I was not impressed at all coming from my Denon PMA-1700ne, which I loved but unfortunately developed a fault so I had to be refunded for. And now I am back on the market searching for a new amp for about £1000, I am thinking is it better to get something like Denon PMA-2010ae (second hand obviously) or another PMA-1700ne. I will use with DALI Opticon 2 and a WiiM streamer. You've been a long-time Denon user. What are your thoughts around buying an older model but higher class? Definitely, I will need to add a DAC too as i listen digital only (for now).
Thanks for sharing. However, I'm surprised to see that sound rendering is so subjective. You say that it's not as good as you'd expect. But nobody knows if it'll be different with other speakers for instance and it is therefore not possible to accuse the amplifier in my opinion.
Yes sound is always subjective, But the problem is $260 SMSL AL200 is almost as good in back to back sound comparison. Another is most people don't have enough experience with many different amps in general. Also most reviewers will say only good things to keep making money with manufacturers.
I got Wharfedale Diamond 225 speakers some years ago after seeing your review of them. I love them. Now I'm thinking of building a 2.1 channel music/gaming/movie system that is connected to a PC and 4K/120hz hdmi 2.1 projector. I'm not planning on adding more speakers in the future and I rather not get AV receiver. Would Yamaha R-N800a or any other receiver in the same price category be a be a great choice for HiFi sounding 2.1 system? As for the speaker side, I'm thinking of getting Klipsch RP-8000F for 1179€ a pair and R-120SW subwoofer for 299€.

@@Tharbamar O.k., there are more differences than HDMI. If the other differences have positive effects on the quality of the sound should be proved more carefully. Yamaha seems to be convinced that the more expensive model is the more audiophile one because of the better parts for example. Is this mere marketing speech? Perhaps we should ask the customers themselves how they estimate the sound of their devices. Like many others I think the RN 1000a sounds great.
The Yamaha brand name accounts for at least $1,000 of the $1,800 retail price. The chassis material doesn 't even compare with any $200 tiny Chinese amps. What a shame !

My friend is a dealer for Yamaha, Accuphase, Denon, and other brands. Therefore, I listened to this series before many, but you know how it is with 'audiophiles', you don't have a place on their street, you might be one of them.

You say the track, "Doesn't do justice" - do you realize how entirely SUBJECTIVE that remark is? The reason the same track is used repeatedly is it is an established baseline. It is one any regular viewer of the channel would be familiar with. If he used a different track all of the time, there would be very little utility in that.
Im using this amp with focal theva n1, it sounds great, I have nothing to complain about. Got it for $1600.

It seems similar build quality to this Yamaha, could be same supplier for the chassis but for the price 900H should be comparable in sound.

Good I've seen this review as I was about to buy Yamaha R-N800a. My Chord Mojo 2 for £400 sounds so much better then this.
I dont know…maybe smsl ao200 mk2 + smsl su-x is a better option.
I have the ao200 mk2 and the smsl vmv d1se2, and that combo was more pleasing to me than this yamaha. The yamaha went back pretty quickly.
I also have that smsl amp and both a topping and smsl mid tier DAC and I would disagree

Audiolab Omnia at this moment is half price . Audiolab tweaked the midrange to my ears and it's an excellent bit of kit .

Definitely going up to 2010AE or 2500 series in general is better in every way.

Are the switches metal or plastic? The Yamaha website doesn't specify the material for the R-N1000A, whereas it does for the A-S701
If I remember rightly most of the knobs are plastic.

An honest price for this should be around 1050-1100. Definitely overpriced. But what today isn't? Everything is INFLATED, because they can, lol!
Do you have a good power cable you can try ?
I have power cables from PS Audio to iFi to Oyaide but Power cable can’t help weak amplifier.

Good afternoon! please tell me if I choose between Yamaha R-N1000A and SMSl AO 300 which will sound better with bookshelf speakers?
For the amplifier stage R-N1000A have better sound, for the money AO300 is hard to beat that’s all I can say.
