    I love it when my work turns out as expected.., but I learn so much from my 'failures!"

    Thanks, Steve, love how this came out. I live in Aiken, So. Carolina, and am met with the same kind of challenge...... trying to paint on my daily bike ride (3 wheels) before getting soaked by the rain. Think I'll follow your lead of painting smaller, and starting with the lighter shapes. I seem to always end up with my sketch on a large piece of paper. Thank you for sharing your talent.

    Great painting 👍. I love it. Myself I do a lot of little paintings, I love um. There so cute and small and takes no time to do them. I'm to the point of painting as good as you are but just practicing, it's fun. I love watching you paint it helps me when I paint. I remember a tree or background you did so that helps me to get an idea of how I should put it down on paper. Like leaving space's in the tree. I never did that before and it makes it look much better. Anyway happy painting. Thanks 😎!

    The learning part is great and important but I don’t want to post daily. The one I did and posted did teach me things. So for me, I’ll work on it and post a few and have a good time. While I am still able I want to work on inking and a variety of things. So thanks to you and so many for wonderful videos full of info. I did order some new paint colors. Okay what’s a thunder storm, we all will settle down when out drought is over. The high for today was supposed to be 106. Again this was very nice..good to see the new colors. PS not saying you said anything about posting every day, just wishing there was a challenge where you could post a couple times a week.

    LOVE the path scripture for this delightful little painting! I appreciate your teaching so much.
    Request: how to find my “style”? What is the process to honing my personal style? Is there exercises?
    I do greeting cards just to send to people by mail (creative hobby). That said, I do scan my finished projects thinking that 1) I hope to see improvement 2) I could possibly print in the future for sale. By nature I’m pretty much “variety within structure” and I’m searching for what that looks like in my work. Thanks for all you share!!!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      I should probably address it in a video but I'm more a proponent of learning and stretching your skills as a focus and just letting your style find you. Style is like a brand. It becomes an amalgamation of all your skills and art experiences and how you apply them. Its very difficult to "create" or "craft" a style thats genuine. Gravitate to styles of art because you are passionate about that process and want to push your development that way but don't try to craft who you are. That should emerge naturally because it will be the best most authentic artistic version of you. When you consciously adapt a look or a style as your identity it often times stunts and squelches your development for what might be something really sensational, something you couldn't have imagined. But when you continually learn and develop your skills and experiment by pushing your artistic boundaries in ways that you love, interesting things start to happen and a style starts to adopt you rather than visa versa. Thats my philosophy on it anyway.

    Beautiful sketch! I love the challenge but I’m working on an acrylic series of a seasonal view of a mountain landscape. Small canvas winter, spring, summer and fall. I’ve been lucky enough to be busy selling some paintings lately. So better work on that but I am going to attempt some of the challenge as a break. Be good to change my brain for a bit. Really love your new pallets! Can’t wait for the next video!

    I saw this challenge on following the white rabbit’s channel and thought about participating on purpose, but I’ve got so many videos to record already that I chickened out and decided not to do it. Well, not do it on purpose anyway. My “diner doodles” are things that I do to relax and they’d fit within this challenge, but I don’t want to take them from being a relaxing spur of the moment thing to something I’m doing with the intent to share on UA-cam, you know? I want to protect my “me time,” I guess is what I’m saying.
    The way you captured those bright yellowish green leaves in the beginning? I know we missed HOW it happened, but to can kind of almost imagine it. Starting off with those and putting them in loosely and with plenty of texture is really
    What makes this whole thing. I think, anyway. I’m looking forward to seeing what else you do during this challenge and seeing if you find ways to get even looser and even quicker!

      Hey thanks Kat! I totally understand on the challenge. I love Inktober each year but can't seem to manage more than 6 or 7 due to other stuff. I think this challenge is the first one I've ever undertaken where I'm seriously trying to do them ALL. We'll see. Thanks for comments on the piece!

      The Mind of Watercolor you can do it!!! I’m sure you can!!! And a piece of advice from a survivor of inktober? Skip days when you’re just really not feelin’ it. Give yourself time, and maybe double up on days when you’re feeling extra feisty. I was completely burnt out for like six months after inktober because I put far too much pressure on myself. Don’t make my mistake-let this be fun!

    Jaiks. I cant do anything without sketching first,lol this would raise my anxiety to level through the roof,wahaha. but damn steve,this is awesome

      Btw why dont you do more on what you love though? Make it a combo like thing. If you feel an art need commingup dont worry about having a video upload ( Unless it is sponsored ofcourse) but if you feel you need it,do it, that is what got us into art to begin with,isnt it? Follow your heart. We will love you and mr skully eitherway ♥️ ♥️ the moment you lose focus on where your heart is,that is when our danger zone kicks in. So dont feel guilty for needing more variation. We all need it from time to time. Keeps us going.

      Following my heart is exactly what I'm doing. I absolutely love this challenge and the idea of it. I'm beyond excited about what I might learn through it. Its a way I've been wanting to exercise my painting for a long while. I love learning and pushing my comfort zone or I wouldn't be doing it. What success I had as an illustrator and designer came partly because I learned early on that your comfort zone will kill you. I've done well enough on this channel being myself and this is just more of it.

      I watched enough lessons on yt to head that warning as well. When it Lurks I hop over to gouache or watercolor pencils, anythingelse waterbased would do then, though not tried yet. I will check that book out, eventough my skill level is not at that point yet :) you make it look so easy and I always messup either the light value or the dark,making it look like a toddler with a paint brush :P

    Thank you for walking us viewers through the process...its very hard to water color loosely...any suggestions?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      Well, yes, lots of suggestions but few I can share in a simple comment. Just keep drawing, painting and learning. Ways to simplify and be loosely expressive come with time. The more you know your mediums and your subjects the easier it is to become looser with them.

    Lovely piece! I find that to keep myself from getting too detailed I have to set myself a time limit. Maybe something like 20 minutes would work for this. Trying to decide if I should give it a go.... I never seem to be able to keep up with these challenges.

      It’s not easy for sure. I’m sure I’ll end up doing some super quick ones before it’s over.

      Amy Giglio my plan B is to paint a big smiley face if I can’t complete a day with something more detailed. Keep it fun. Don’t threaten yourself. Who taught you such things?

    Sooo awesome! Wish I had half your skill and talent. I think the amt of looseness is perfect for a sketch. Much looser, and it would just look kind of blobby and uninteresting, IMHO. (Although I don't have any doubt you could make it work!) I love everything ive seen you create. I have to admit, I'm confused by this whole focus on looseness I hear from everyone on youtube (all of whom are better artists than myself). I love details. (I also love impressionism, even abstracts, though, so it's not that I have a strong affinity for realism.) But what, for you, is the benefit of this looseness thing? I clearly need to understand this more 😎. Thanks for your videos! learned SO much.

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! Primarily, the benefit is for quick sketching out and about. I love detail too and I won't change in that. I don't like being loose just for the sake of being loose, but I want to increase my rendering speed, get better as simplification where possible and the ability to capture the essence of a scene quickly and with impact without spending two hours at one location. Good urban sketchers can move around and capture several scenes in a day. Just a creative muscle I want to exercise not a new style I'm trying to adopt.

    Dude! Awesome as usual. But what’s with the water Brush? I didn’t think you liked them. You seemed to make it work just fine!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      Never said I didn't like water brushes. I use them on location for plein air but we had rain so here I was simulating being in the field. The water management is quite different so I was practicing that aspect.

    Very nice. Needs someone walking down the path. That was in my imaginings. I can also hear birds singing.

    Virtual hikes. How cool! Never heard of those until now. Are we allowed to paint a scene from those hikes and sell the painting?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      As long as its not a precise identifiable copy. Copyright law refers to it as needing to be a transformative work. You should be fine unless you're attempting photo realism copying of the scene.

    Is this not the same thing you do with your spontaneous watercolors (which I love!)?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      No not really. This challenge will involve some plein air and always painting from a reference. The focus is on capturing the scene quickly, freshly and with minimal pre drawing. My spontaneous paintings use no reference. True I don't draw first but in spontaneous painting I'm trying to find a picture in a collection of random washes. 😃

    While it indeed is laudable to stretch oneself and learn new skills, it's also a truism that people overlook and downplay the value of their own 'signature style ' and personal 'shorthand' in their work. One's signature style is as unique as a fingerprint, and sometimes it's better to embrace than fight against. While it's natural to question one's gifts, it's unnatural and counterproductive to deny them. So while stretching to enlarge one's talents it's also important to embrace and honor one's gifts. The world has been given Ingres, but it also has been given Van Gogh. I know you already understand this, Steve. But it makes me a bit sad, to hear you belittle your admirable personal style. Your numerous followers are testament to that. Thanks for the fun vid!

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      I do understand. I don't belittle my style. If I gave that impression its the wrong impression. Our style is the sum total of all that we learn and I love to stretch myself. I have no desire to "change" myself into something else. I will always be who I am. Thanks for the positive thoughts.

    Does purple grey always make a great shadow color? I never know what to use for shadow colors for realism without them looking too heavy. Could you do a topic on this?

    • @mindofwatercolor
      @mindofwatercolor  6 років тому

      No not at all. Shadow color is always the objects actual color but darker and more neutral. It may be influenced by other factors such as reflected light. Outdoor shadows are often bluish or purpleish because of the reflected light from the sky. But when a shadow falls on grass for example, the grass is still green, just darker, more neutral and probably cooler (bluer).
