The argument that, it's okay to help people but not to show it, is absurd. The only reason he's able to afford to do this is because he shares what he does, and the video resulted in massive amounts of donations from the public to that clinic that will fund many more surgeries. It would be immoral if he didn't share it, he essentially made an advertisement for a charity.

I don't really think many people are upset at Mr. Beast specifically. They're upset that the system works in a way, as he described in the video, where curable blindness is a quick, easy surgery, but since people can't afford it, they remain blind. It's a highlight of our broken healthcare system and the pitfalls of capitalism in general. I think maybe some people project that onto him but what he did was undeniably a very good thing.

Personally, I think good deeds are better done without sharing with the public, with the exception if it was meant to be a part in a competition. For example, in Team Trees and Team Seas, the top donations were displayed which led to people donating more. In Mr. Beast's case, making videos is how he can get more money to help more people, so it doesn't even matter if he's "profiteering", that's how he can help more and more people.
Also, the curing blindness video was undoubtedly the best one he made, starting from the editing itself, and I'm surprised it was the one people complained from.

Oftentimes a problem is just too big to handle alone, and not enough attention is given to it by the general public. Mr. Beast (and a lot of other philanthropists) knows this, and is able to _more efficiently_ tackle said problems this way.
Whatever motivations he has with his philanthropic efforts, the important thing really is if he (or anyone) has been able to make the world a better place. Whatever hate that's been directed _at_ him (and not the system) is the greater societal issue here imho. Too many haters trying to pull down others because they _know_ they're insignificant, and would like to have a little chance at fame by bashing people like Mr. Beast.

Let''s also recall the phenomenon of moral licensing: most people have some sort of good deed budget (there's actually no fixed "done" point, but this is an analogy) that, when drained, makes them feel less guilty about not contributing more or somewhere else. Donating to help a few individuals and donating to fix systems both charge from that budget, so donating to one can come at the cost of donating to the other which is bad when the more effective one loses out.
The net effect depends on how much Mr. Beast brings attention to this kind of healthcare (increasing total, collective moral budget, here we are talking about it after all) and how much he changes the budget distribution (I suspect he'll shift some proportion from the effective method to the individual method). It's possible there's still more absolute moral budget spent on fixing the system than before if the increased attention outweighs the distribution shift, but I don't know. This isn't like the Team Seas video where the budget increases was (IMO) smaller and the individual method more heavily pushed, which I viewed as a net negative, so this one might be net positive potentially?
I wish his videos would spend more time on systemic change, and I don't think that would impact his reach or income much either except for scummy sponsors dropping out.

The rabbi tells the man "Do you think the orphans will care what your intentions were? Build the orphanage." and so the man agrees".
Even if Mr.Beast were a puppy kicking monster, this is money coming from youtube sponsors and corporations that is going into helping cure disabilities, systemic issues aside. Mr.Beast is rich but not "topple the billionaire oligarchy" rich, he did a good thing for a lot of people and that's what matters, Action.

He lives out of a studio apartment, because he doesn't care to have a fancy house, he opened up a food bank that he funds himself to help people, one of his second channels is "Mr.Beast philanthropy" Where its just about him and his team helping people around the world, bringing water to villages that don't have it, rebuilding homes/schools, providing food and health care etc... And people are like "He doesn't need to film it and post it..." but they don't understand by filming it and posting it, he is firstly achieving his dream of making the best videos, and most importantly getting more money to reinvest and help more people. His platform atm is basically Help people, film it, profit off the video, reinvest it to help more people, film it, profit off the video and repeat... its just he puts some of that aside for himself and reinvest into more fun based videos as well, and his fun videos are never just about him or his friend he always get dozens or hundreds of random people and there is always a prize and someone is always getting help from it, and all the stuff he buys for the video is giving hundreds possibly thousands of people work... There's a difference between a powerful individual (such as MrBeast) being benevolent and the "poverty porn" that a lot of creators produce. I can't speak for MrBeast as I don't watch his content, but the tone is important when handling touchy topics like poverty and injustice. I've seen many a TikTok or UA-cam short where the creator is clearly belittling the impoverished person's position or making a spectacle of them (for example, things like toxic trust exercises that the disadvantaged stranger must pass in order to get the money). That's obviously not ok and shows bad faith. But, as you said, someone in a position of privilege doing something good for others isn't intrinsically a bad thing, and really should be seen more.
Edit: I am returning to this comment to clarify what I mean by "poverty porn" as it apparently has become a bit of a buzzword surrounding this "controversy." When I said "poverty porn," I was referring to content and shows that put the impoverished people in a position to be belittled or mocked. I'm _especially_ referring to certain TV shows where the narratives surrounding people's circumstances and personal affairs are manipulated to paint them as bad people as opposed to struggling people who did the best they could do with the hand they were dealt. From what I've heard of this MrBeast stunt, nothing of that sort has happened so I'll stand by what I said.

Chastising someone for not doing "enough" does nothing but incentivise them to do nothing at all since their efforts are going to be belittled regardless. That comment is not the promotion of positive change you think it is.
You can speak out about systemic issues all day long, and I'd be with you on that, but nothing positive comes from attacking an individual who is openly going out of their way to do something good for others.

It seemed like a good thing, to play 'the game' in order to achieve good aims. People sometimes get overwhelmed by how shit the system is, and it blinds them into black/white thinking. I think everything is shades of grey. I've always felt that it's easier to make an impact from within, rather than fight from without. The challenge is to not forget that aim and get sucked in to being a slave to the machine. I always succeeded from within, and yet retained my essential 'me-ness'. I applaud ANY philanthropist who takes money from those who 'can' and give it to those who 'can't'.

The richest Spanish person is Amancio Ortega (founder of the Inditex Group, the one of Zara, Pull and Bear, all of these). Well this man donates every one in a while some very expensive machine to hospitals or similar public places. Apart from the point that this should be taken care off by the governments the issue comes from who makes the donation. In this case in particular Ortega doesn't pay taxes in Spain, makes all of its products wherever it's cheaper (Bangladesh, Thailand...) but takes the good words and compliments when he does something like this.

There is no issue with what he did. The issue is that surgery to remove cataracts is simple, easy, and quick. It's far more expensive than it needs to be in the US. Our health care industry needs reform, badly. Especially when the price of insulin is more than 500x the cost to actually make it, it's needlessly expensive to the point where people die from not being able to afford enough of it.

94 years ago the great depression started. In the United States we are currently facing the worst economic crisis to happen since. A lot of good progress has been made in many fields, but as far as a sense of financial stability and freedom the United States goes, the country is severely backsliding. (This is happening in several other countries, as well, but I live in the US and will keep my comment to that.)
In the 1930's if your house was foreclosed and put up for auction, the community you lived in could help you buy it back. Now someone on the other side of the world will buy it within 10 minutes for 50% more than the market rate to make sure no one else can.
100 years ago is not a good measure currently, when 100 years ago people were at least able to trade skills and resources directly during their worst financial times. There has been a marked disappearance of close community and ability to trade resources directly instead of through money.
Capitalism violently fluctuates and even during the best times for capitalism, it still puts a marked focus on the eradication of community, in order to treat people as individual resources. We are in the middle of one of the worst financial times in history due to both a lack of individual financial resources and a lack of community engagement. Engagement which is intentionally discouraged by MANY of our government bodies because community leads to action against the people who are benefitting from this, and they don't want to stop benefitting from this.
"Compare what living like is today under capitalism compared to 100 years ago" is not currently a good defense of capitalisms less harmful qualities.

What bugged me a bit more is that he gave someone a Tesla as well. And I feel like if his main aim was really helping people, he wouldn’t have bought that Tesla and instead used the money to help an extra 4 or so people.
You know when celebrities go on quiz shows to win money for charity? Well let’s say hypothetically they could win a maximum of £20000 but the celebrity only managed £5000. The thing is, the big company budgeted incase the celebrity won the maximum. And that extra £15000 instead of going to charity goes in the big company’s pockets. Instead of it seeming like they’re doing a good thing and giving £5000 to charity it just feels like they’re taking £15000 from charity.
That’s sort of what the Tesla felt like for me. Giving the guy a Tesla was a bit overkill. If he needs to get around that’s one thing. But with the money from that Tesla you could get a cheap car and cure 3 or 4 more people or blindness. Imagine you’re one of those 3 or 4 people who’re still blind because that money was allocated to a Tesla instead of your sight.

The context in which a certain word is used is of utmost importance to analyzing whether or not the intent or effect is of an ableist/racist/sexist nature. Retroactively applying a modern perspective to events that happened years ago can prove progress that has been made, but they rarely provide an accurate representation of motives or morality in that time. Saying terms like Mr. Beast used to say was considered normal and not offensive by many. In fact, even now there are plenty of regions in the world where that word is still used as a synonym to “idiot”. It is extremely dangerous to view another culture through your own culture.
As a thought experiment, let’s say that a foreigner moves to your country. In their culture, it is a sign of utmost disrespect to reach out your hand for a handshake. Does that mean that you are an extremely rude person? No, because these are two different cultures. The same philosophy can be applied to the use of diction in different cultures. Unless it causes direct, immediate harm to a community, labeling speech as ableist/sexist/racist is a slippery slope. If Mr Beast and his friends within his community pretty much unanimously agreed that saying these phrases was inoffensive and was just a joke, then it is true that in that time and place, saying those words was not offensive and meant in an ableist/sexist/racist way. Social norms especially in regards to speech and diction can change over time, and that’s ok. What matters now is that Mr Beast is respectful to the current social norms and doesn’t intentionally go out of his way to harm someone.

It also ensures that everyone can live a proper life. Of course there isn't a single system where everything goes right and there isn't a single system that fits everyone's lifestyle. What's wrong with the system is that we expect blind people to work the same jobs/income as ordinary people but then we give them no way to do that (like expecting them to drive a car to work for example), then we expect them to pay for their own insurance (which comes from your job in the USA) to pay for a procedure in a healthcare system that already costs too much, (where even just one medical bill will break you). Then pay for it so that they can get their sight back, so they can earn the income and job of an average everyday person, and by doing so get access to insurance and lower rates thus lowering the cost of medical procedures... but instead we complain about them and wonder why they are so much poorer than everyone else.
So people are complaining that Mr. beast made a video where he got the sight of 1000 people back so they can go and contribute to their families and societies again. Dang hope he never runs a non-profit can you imagine if he put pictures of the people he cured on the pamphlets he gave out asking for people to donate money to help people see again! The right thing can be done for the wrong reasons. Or what can appear to be the wrong reason.
You are correct, X, that the problem with absolutes is that they are extremes. In a society, we'll never have solutions that are one-size fits all, most, or at best a few. It always makes me think of Spock. "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Or the one." And we have trouble looking at things from that perspective. It's a logical standpoint. It can be a moral gray area. It means pulling away those emotions attached to the decisions, the situation's optics, and look at instead what was accomplished even if there were some sort bad taste left behind.
Anyway, *now* looking at it from a personal perspective, vision loss is a subject that hits close to home. Without my glasses I can't even get around my room. With my glasses, I still have sight issues that I adjust everything around. I haven't watched Mr. Beast's video but I don't like the choice of words, curing blindness, because that implies a miracle, almost some other worldly in nature cure. And that Mr. Beast somehow did the curing himself, not the doctors. Blindness caused by cataracts is usually correctable; it is not the only cause of blindness. I'm not minimizing the condition, but it is typically a recoverable condition unless you've left the cataracts untreated for a long time. I have some on the underneath of my eyes which cause minimal cloudiness in the bottom peripheral range. I think this particularly struck me because I'm legally blind without my glasses, not eligible for laser, I still use accessibility aids because of my eyesight, and I somewhat understand how much it means to not be able to see. In one of the recipient's places, I'd be full of gratitude but he didn't do the curing. He made it possible. Semantics are everything.

MrBeast wants to help the world and help those who have blindness who want to see clearly and experience the beauty of our world

Why do ppl think it’s performative? MrBeast makes it VERY clear he’s doing this because he genuinely loves making people happy. And either way, he cured 1000ppl from being blind.

Xisuma damn, you're worldviews are insanely helpful to me, they're like the cure for pessimism. And your comment section is very wholesome! That's rather rare here in UA-cam :)

my main concern when i saw that video was the fact that he felt the need to place himself in the thumbnail next to the kid. That kinda struck me as him trying to seek validation for the good thing he did rather than doing it just for the sake of it. Ultimately i dont think ive ever watched one of his videos so I can't say for sure, but thats at least how it comes across initially

From what I understand mr beasts thumbnails are very carefully created to maximize views. Not saying this is a bad thing at all, he needs each video to be successful so he can continue doing what he is doing. I don’t even think he creates his own thumbnails, as he has professionals that create the most enticing thumbnails for him.
The dude is a good guy definitely, everything he does is to allow himself to do bigger and better things for people

It is his brand, almost all of his videos have him in their thumbnails

xisuma needs to start a podcast like i would listen to this stuff all the time also i think that even if mr beast had bad intentions he still helped 1,000 people. he has helped so many other people in so many different ways it would be hard to believe that he wants to do it to help himself, not others

The only thing I worry about is when he uses money as an incentive to make people do stressful and potentially dangerous things in some of his challenge videos. He seems to have moved away from some of that tho or only has other creators do the challenges but i always worry that the people in his videos may feel they have to partake even if they don’t actually feel comfortable with the challenge/being filmed bc they need the money but if he’s selecting them carefully and making sure not to hold the money over them to make them do things I take no issue with him filming it

It becomes wrong to do this when the intent is solely/mostly for yourself - if Mr beast had done this simply to make money and get views, then yes, this would be immoral. He has stated several times that his primary goal is to make a lot of money so as to use it to help those in need, and he plans on making that money through videos. Knowing that - overall, this video he made accomplishes two good things - it raises money for Mr. Beast to put towards other giving opportunities, and it raises awareness of these issues with his audience. The only bad I could see coming from this is it looks like he's exploiting sick/disabled people for money, but if you study the intent with his videos, you'll see this is not the case.
An immoral thing to do would be to spread false motive without doing your research or understanding the situation, a thing it seems most people are doing here. I hope that Mr. Beast's business model of making videos of himself helping people to get more money to make bigger videos of himself helping people grows exponentially, because people in need of help are being helped. It shouldn't matter how this is being done (with some exceptions), so long as people are being helped.

The order is something like this:
Doing good things simply to help people.
Doing good things for you own benefit.
    Doing nothing.
Doing bad things for your own benefit.
Doing bad things simply to hurt people.

People have always been asking for positive role models and now we have a massively successful person that does good things and because of it is so succesful. This in turn might inspire others to follow in his footsteps. Maybe it starts with wanting fame, but doing good feels good and those that follow will see and understand what it means to do good to others.

Ok, I’m sorry to go off topic here, but it’s not every video that one can really concentrate on your build and I was just wondering if you can open the top chests in your storage room? Or are they there just for aesthetics? Or can you open them?

The issue is overgeneralization in the issue of charity on BOTH sides. Yes, there are some people who do charities to "clean" their image e.g. Rockefeller or Carnegie Foundation as well as it is their passion to help people. Most of the drama is based on the former argument.
