I think the "large room" is actually one of those really old massive Kilns, you even have the window door thing at 5:02! If they are firing lots of pots (clearly, they are obsessed XD) they would need one, and it looks just like it.
Edit: also, just saw the final result, and despite everyone thinking the buildings are ugly, I actually LOVE the style so much. I kinda wanna make some stuff with it now, very unique.
that would make so much sense!! and i’m so glad you liked it and got some inspiration
@@TheBreadley haha, yeahh! Also congrats, that video really blew up, it's like Mumbo Jumbos format, but building. I'd love to see more like it!
I love how you frequently cracked yourself up, quality content
tysm!
@@TheBreadley I personally think that's supposed to be a watch tower that sank into the ground and all the brick blocks inside of it are supposed to be support
Something like the Pillager Outpost
@@mrtree.1 wine storage underground like in Greece maybe
You probably felt the same as how historians/archeologists feel after being able to connect things to create a story
honestly it was so much fun lemme pick up archeology as a hobby
@@TheBreadley I hope someone creates a mod that adds a bunch of ruined structures for a archeology when it comes out
@@CreatorProductionsOriginal i would absolutely love that
Minecraft archaeology. Impressive.
i did the whole job. excavation. preservation. renovation.
@@TheBreadleybeautification too, what a weird build they added😂
@@zikWayn weird but it actually worked
@@CreatorProductionsOriginal as I said, the build mojang added is weird
Breadley did an amazing job
@OrbevenMC I like it to but it's ugly for some reason💀
I think the horizontal brick was for where pots or bricks were baked or cold storage. It could have been a cellar (pots+sweet berries =wine), but it reminds me of how bricks and roof tiles and pots were baked in midevil time. ❤
Or the brick floor collapsed.
Or there is no meaning
this is such a good interpretation
@@grimreaper894 It doesn't look like the bricks collapsed at all, and there are more than enough bricks for the floor
I also thought the same as moonlight
I think the stained glass can be worked in nicely if you're willing to make more changes. We can assume that certain things here are vastly degraded, for example there might well have been wooden roofing. Since these structures are buried, it would have rotted away first. Also, you could probably slightly switch up some of the clay and unglazed terracotta, as it too could have faded over the years. This way you could have the freedom to include the stained glass in a proper palette, matching for example red and yellow instead of red and red.
I like that some people are getting creative with this feature. It didntd seem super fun for me at fist but seeing you and other people talking about it i'm warming up to it too.
I saw these in the snapshot, and they look so weird and discombobulated, a real challenge to try and restore lol
Looks good though I love the two towers connected by the path and the farm land
right like i love that they’ve been added but they’re all over the place. glad you like it tho!
@@TheBreadley i think it's intentional, the ruins are so old that most of the buildings have been destroyed or deformed leaving weird shapes
@@TheBreadley Did you know they updated the cherry blossom particles? They now float and blow like they are in the wind.
@@Ewokpilot65 yes! i mean the block palette and floor plan, the degeneration is fantastic tho. leaves so much room for interpretation
@@thewiz2003 YES and i’m gonna make a new build with them im very excited
Really awesome concept
thank u!
Wow I’m surprised this hasn’t blown up yet :O
Hi Mogswamp! :D
Nice video!!! A suggestion: Maybe you should add wodden parts in the buildings, because they probably had wood in them, but It decomposed, you know?
love this idea
That's true, that must be why buildings have round corners
@@RobopUA-cam this didn't spawn for Breadley in this video, but there are other buildings that are shaped very egg-like. So I think the round corners _might_ have been intentional. That's up to interpretation anyway
@@artiomboyko hmmmm, It makes sense, but I am referring above all to the towers, since the houses are round
yes, when I first saw the structures, I was pretty sure they used to have wooden roofs and some wooden log corners like the villages, but they must have decomposed since the ruins were usually buried underground over the millennia. I think this might be the most interesting little structure that's in Minecraft currently. These ancient people who built them could've been much more advanced than we think, that's why they had kilns and armor trim molds.
Idk if anyone has said this yet but the room with the bricks crossing, it reminds me of a giant ceramics kiln. It would also make sense with all the terracotta and glazed terracotta. So the bottom stairs would be where the fire would go and you would feed logs to the fire
That sounds like smth the devs would do
I actually like most of the structures, they have some interesting architecture from another civilization
very true
Me too, I quite like these structures
Same, I'm happy they decided to use a lot of decorative blocks that didn't spawn naturally
The little "pillars" that had the tan/pink skintone tops, were definitely meant to convey sculptures of villagers. There are four of them, two adults and two children.
wait that makes so much sense
I think those could be a reference to the four main pillars of this lost culture, in other words, what they were knows for:
Raising.
Hosting.
Shaping.
Wayfinding.
I absolutely love this idea tbh. I wasn't the biggest fan of the trail ruins as a structure. But the final result of this absolutely sold them for me. This looked really cool
I think the concept that you could be walking only a few blocks above a cool ancient village is what personally sold me
i’m so glad u like it!
I believe the video encapsulates what the devs probably intended for us to do with archeology (trail ruins in particular). There's something fascinating about uncovering evidence of an ancient civilization with a very distinct culture/building style, and then imagining what those ruined buildings could have looked like when restored usinonly context clues, loot and your creativity It's a genius approach to thr game's archeology and storytelling aspect of this update!
The restored structures look very nice as well! I love the creative desicions you made throughout. Great job my guy!!
absolutely! and they did such a good job giving clues and leaving room for interpretation. i’m so glad u liked it
I think the large room with red bricks could be for drying grass into hay. I saw comment saying that it may be for storage and it also makes sens.
that could definitely be the case!
I have a feeling that the design of these will change before release, though the trail ruins do make a lot more sense when they're properly built like this. Nice work!
This absolutely is a good way of handling archeology. The build is beautiful! I hope more people see the worth in the structures like you did
Also i feel like the glass pabes were actually shards of glass, which could make jewelry and pots, which isnt something minecraft has sadly
so glad u liked it!
Wait, the end city-like stairs got me thinking about the lore, especially the theory of the endermen being a past civilization. Maybe these dig sites were made to resemble the end cities in a way? Very interesting.
RIGHT matpat is gonna have a field day
This is a nice theory, but it goes against my theory I had when I was recreating my Trails settlement. These houses have two blocks high rooms remarkably often, so I theorized that the civilization must have been quite a short people (notice how the houses of creatures of the same height as the player are normally at least three blocks tall)
Thought abt that too when i saw em
I love this! My only suggestion would be to have llamas instead of horses just because these buildings gave me "wandering trader vibes" as soon as I saw them.
oooh that’s a very good idea
I think it'd be super cool if you rebuilt this in your own style. I'd love to see your take on this ancient village but the challenge is to keep it as colorful as the original since they seemed to value that in their culture.
Looking at the different parts, it appears that they aren't all at their original heights. Likely parts have sunken into the ground. The reason why some don't look right such as the one that you built on camera is because of this.
i bet ur right
Yeah the outpost tower looking bit probably stood higher
I think the glass panes could be representing some kind of glass shards from bottles or something & not necessarily their actual use as blocks:windows
It’s cool that you used the sniffer plants since they probably existed together at the same time
Well one of the pottery shard has a picture of a sniffer so It could be true
@@jrhrbnf-zo5ws oh yea, didn’t even think about that, you’re right
Brilliant idea. I'm fascinated by the ancient cultures. Re-imagine the civilization would be very interesting to look into
I feel like the mud and terracotta implies a slightly different biome honestly. It is a weird style for a cold environment like a taiga. Though maybe the lack of proper roofs implies the use of wooden or thatched roofs which didn't survive?
maybe so! it would definitely look great in a desert or mesa
Ancient Russians would actually cover some of their churches and also their furnaces with painted terracotta tiles, frescos and mosaics. The houses would be wooden so often it's the furnace and chimney that would survive time.
Roofs would definitely be pitched, including - over the tower (look for Nizhniy Novgorod Kremlin to see how it works).
Over mud bricks - maybe not bricks of mud, but dirty bricks? Like limestone they bulit of actually gets dirty without proper care.
The whole thing honestly resembles an orthodox church with it's layout... A tower and a buliding with a big hall and a lot of decorations... and a bit willd roof and layout... And candles...
specifically knowing that the onion domes would collapse first, especially when there would be people trying to rob it and destroy it. It has very typical weird architecture of "soviets half destroyed and repurposed a church".
@@TheBreadley what do you think of above hypothesis?
4:55 that brick room, I think it's a large kiln so they can create their teracota. The access point to collect the stone is at the bottom, with the stairs, and the loading point is the hole at the top. The bricks are some leftovers that weren't collected. Or they're purposefully-placed breaks so that air bubbles don't form in their pottery/teracotta.
Considering the dyes they use (red, brown, yellow), I bet they didn't have much access to your preferred colors needed for proper color-theory. It's likely they didn't have much blue either, since they use it sparingly. So I think it'd make more sense for there to be fewer of those new blue catapult plants (although still some), and more of the torchflowers.
I also wanted to do this in my own world! When I first saw these ruins in videos about the snapshot I thought it was a random placement of terracottas, bricks, and sus blocks.
But then I was like, wait, that's a road, and the placement of these blocks aren't actually random, these are structures!
And this is the first time we see the civilian houses and city aspects of the long forgotten builders that came before us!
you totally should! it’s such a fun process
Historical recreation is a hobby of mine, so this update is SO much fun for me. I was just thinking how fun it would be to rebuild the ruin when I saw this video! I loved seeing it come to life.
One thing I had to learn when accurately recreating history is that what we think of as beautiful or stylish today can be VASTLY different than the past, because they valued different things.
Today we have access to so many types of materials, so smaller palettes are valued as a way to show restraint and artistic sensibility. A past society may have seen it differently- the more colors and rare dyes one could afford, the more one could deck out their house and windows. That could show how rich OR how well-traveled and accomplished someone was in an era where dye was harder to obtain. Vikings and medieval peasants had access to way more colors than pop culture would have you believe, and they used them in ways we would think of as garish or tacky! YES you would wear an orange hat and a blue tunic and bright red stockings and a yellow undershirt!
I've heard a lot of people say the colors in these ruins are too much, that they're tacky or ugly or should be toned down. I disagree! The point of the update is to investigate an ancient society. If that society is just the same as today, what is there to investigate?
this single comment just taught me so much, this is such a brilliant line of thought. thank you for laying it out like that!
MAN YES
When the snapshot had just come out, that was the first thing I did: I tried to reconstruct the Trail Ruins. That's such a fun thing to do! And imagine trying this in survival, when you dig every single part of these out and brush off all the suspicious blocks finding stuff, that is _actually_ archaeology! Wow
YES i am excited to get to do this in survival too
I like how different it looks compared to other structures in Minecraft. It gives its own identity to that culture. Really interesting work.
I always thought that the trail ruins had potential to look really beautiful, and it's great to see someone taking that potential! Keep up the good work
so glad u like it!
I honestly kind of love the Trail Ruin, it somehow manages to feel realistic even thought it doesn’t look like any culture I can think of. I see it and it feels familiar, like a memory from a past that doesn’t exist.
I’d love to hear in the future from the devs about what inspired the design.
As someone studying ancient history, I am currently having flashbacks to reading about Arthur Evans' 'restoration' of Knossos on Crete! We tread a fine line between rediscovering the past and imposing modern judgements of what is pleasing and useful upon it... Still, much better that such reimaginings are made in a block game than on real archaeological sites as Evans did!
(I will note that it is legitimately hilarious to see the instinctive aversion to the garish colours. In contrast to the blinding white marble that people imagine today, said colours are remarkably close to the tastes of the Greeks and Romans! All of those temples and monuments were painted in gloriously bright colours back in their own times.)
the glass panes cannot be saved but really great job on the build, I think the ruins are underrated and this is a great take on them
thank u!
Why do people find the glass panes ugly? How can anyone even have an opinion on them since they are Such a simple block? it's literally just a transparent color!
@@blankface9363 I kinda feel that it was not about panes vs blocks, but about colourless vs stained. Colourless glass, especially glass panes, word well in most cases, while for stained glass, that's a challenge to include it in a build for this to work out, especially with such bright colours
Im loving archeology more and more. I'll definitly be using this styke if building when i terraform my End Island.
This looks great! You should do the same for the ancient city too.
i should!
Its kinda weird that this structure spawns in the Taiga instead of the Mesa biome. The design of the roofs indicate that there was no rain, and the resources used are common in the mesa
a good point, maybe they’re old enough that the biomes have changed over time? it’s interesting to think about
@@TheBreadley Yeah, I had similiar idea, that is probably the reason they are almost fully burried. Maybe they are the same age as underwater ruins
Great idea and job. I imagine that the mud bricks were originally plastered/tiled over, so I might have replaced most of it with terracotta, but that's just another interpretation. Also, another commenter's point on decomposed wooden structures is a good one imo.
that’s such a good idea!
i think that the room that you used for the kiln may have been a treasure room of sorts, it has a large cluster of suspicious sand and gravel in it
I love your reconstruction! I'm looking forward to digging some up in my long time world. I was planning to make one into an archaeological museum site, but maybe I should reconstruct one too. I already restored an ancient city (well, a small section of it, the whole thing would be too much work in survival), and populated it with some villagers. I also actually love how the buildings look, the crazy colors are so fun :D
that’s so cool! it’s gonna be so much fun to tackle in survival
Do both! Dig it up and make it look like an archeology site as much as possible, then recreate nearby how you imagine it could have looked like :)
I feel like Llamas instead of horses could work since the buildings colors match pretty well with the wandering villagers! Amazing work regardless thou
The snapshot ruins looked absolutely horrendous. Like a vomit spill of unused blocks.
But you've managed to make this ancient village look really damn nice!
You did great with the detailing yet looking like natural generation.
agreed! thank u so much
It's so interesting to try and recreate these ancient structures and I love how you did it. Also love the random greek words, as a greek I find it so funny like, you named the stable ''okay''
people keep letting me know what random things ive named them 😭 it’s so funny i love it

I’ve seen a lot of people saying that the block choice looks random, or that it doesn’t look good, I actually really like the block palate, though. It looks nice.
Trail ruins makes me think of Ancient Rome. They were known to be really advanced, and even had big roads. It could be a callback to Ancient Rome?
Edit: The roads even have a mix of block types that are similar to the materials that the Roman Empire used to make their roads.
Yes but the building blocks don’t look very ancient Roman in my opinion at least
Fair point, but the materials, that are used to make these structures have similar traits to real life Roman structures. But I won't judge you.
@@loganentertainment1814 whilst I can see where you are coming from rome would likely be more pale-warm
@@warcriminalgaming2359 Actually, the common idea that the ancient romans and greeks built in a steril and auster style is wrong. Archeologists have tested many of the buildings and statues that survive and discovered that they used to be quite colorfully painted. As those civilizations collapsed, the buildings were not maintained and the paint was worn and bleached away by the sun and the elements.
@@arasdeeps1852 well I do not believe that uniform, but even if they are more colorful many ruins have clearly lost the color
Despite the buildings looking a lil ugly in some parts like you said, i actually really like how minecraft's world at one point had cultures which like making pots and have their own little style for building, and its really interesting how you rebuilt them :)
I think the buildings look amazing for the most part! I think the stained glass windows really added to it too. It's clear Mojang was taking some inspiration from traditional architecture native americans & a few other non-western cultures. It's nice to see something other than the european planks & masonry for a change :>
This video was awesome! You fixing up these old buildings made me like them even more! I actually had a similar project back in middle school which was fun. These buildings are super colorful, which some may not like, but ancient buildings were painted in all sorts of vibrant colors as a display of wealth. Though I do agree with other commentators that the colors are most likely faded block versions, or construction materials stripped of “paint”
Boiii, irl archeology student here, this was so funny to see. The way you unintentionally used methods, that are similar to real archeological one is pretty funny.

I think the layout of the "large room" is reminiscent of fantasy air shafts for mines. So I imagine nothing goes in the "room" and it's just a supported shaft going down to the underground areas, with the ladder providing some access.
ooo i like that idea
On the applecraft server my base is based off of a trail ruin. I follow it so presice as to directly build the jigsaws block for block(excluding the gravel) and living in the one I like best. I actually use the buildings based on their names, such as that I use the stables for my sniffers, the empty hall next to the tower as my armory, and the room with a bunch of functional blocks as my furnace and crafting room.
Honestly the restored village looks fantastic, storywise. It looks like as if civilization was still in the ancient times, hence the culture looks pretty much more Ancient Mesopotamian, or Assyrian, or Babylonian, etc. It tells so much about the ancient culture with the customized pots, glazed terracottas, and colored terracottas/concretes. Before watching this, I didn't even realize the trailed ruins were remains of an ancient village 😂
right, it really does bring a lot of ancient cultures to mind
Watching this made me realise, the ancient city desperately needs some suspicious gravel of its own
i would Love that
At first I didn't like the ruins but now that I see what they were going for I really like them for their storytelling possibilities
I also wondered what they would look like, and had been toying with the idea of doing this. Another idea for the roofs, is they may have been made out of something that biodegraded over time, so there isn't really any trace of them left. Using the context clues, they could have been thatched (we know they grew wheat), or one of the wood types that were evident from the signs. I imagine there could have been a thatched/wood roof over the terracotta ceilings.
I really like the design of the village especially after you added all the decor
this is super cool! i think the farms would have been more accurate if they were next to a river, because the structures tend to generate closer to rivers/water sources, but this looks awesome & I think you did an excellent job
I think the block pallet is supposed to fit in with the era the sniffer and the plants they dig up were originally in, because they look sort of like what primitive people would make.
I love the idea of interpretive archaeology in Minecraft. While the buildings might not look fantastic from a player's perspective, it has a clear and distinct style that gives some insight into the culture that might've built it. Lots of mud and earthy materials rather than stone like most players might use. A surprising range of colors too. If they had access to this much terracotta would it be more likely for them to dig it up from a river, or was the environment a terracotta badland in the past? Those are the things I think about with fictional ancient structures like this.
absolutely! it gives so much to think about
I was excavating one today and I was just thinking, what if someone restored them? This also helped me see if there was any spots i missed too. U did a amazing job!
I’ve dubbed the civilization that made these ruins the Terracota People. They seem separate from the civilization that built the strongholds and the ancient city. Less advanced for sure.
Theory: Unlike the ocean ruins, these villages were built much later than the last supposed structures by the ancient builders.
The last of the ancient builders (other than the villagers and illagers) Build these as their last homes, way after the disease outbreak. One reason why they aren't very destroyed, is that they aren't that old compared to the rest of the structures, that's why they are mostly intact with some blocks just off
love this theory
I really struggled in finding like this content that is making a makeover of the trails ruins. Thanks bro for making like this content, I really enjoyed the video. Keep it up bro❤
that’s what i’m here for, glad u liked it!

Amazing job! I always loved to play like I'm going through the ages and I'm glad that Minecraft is taking this route.
me too, it really sparks the imagination
I think that string could be interpreted as looms being used so there's weaving rooms, banners being hung up around town, and maybe carpets or wool for canopies?
ohhh that would make so much sense
Good job! I actually did the same thing a few days ago, but I gave up because I couldn’t figure out how some of the buildings looked like. Also, I think the long line of stone you found on the road might once have been a canal for draining water and possibly sewage out of the town.
ooh i hadn’t thought of that!
Nicely done. I have a few comments.
Wooden things would've deteriorated long ago, so there is a big chance they had most of their structures and misc done with wood, and only some distinguished buildings and stuff remained. Or wooden stuff was burned when the villagers abandoned it or were violently removed.
First thing I noticed in this restoration is the lack of doors. These guys knew pottery and at least basic metallurgy, surely they would've been able to make doors.
Other thing is a severe lack of housings. Most of their houses would've been made of wood and would've surrounded the more lasting buildings. I suggest adding a bunch of wooden houses around for villagers to live in. Best stuff in this suggestion is you can make up their architecture, it's likely their wooden buildings differed in style from current villagers' houses.
Thanks.
I love what you did with the landscaping, it looks so alive!
thank u!
This is great! Super inspired and very well done imo
thank u!
This is a really cool idea and is inspiring me to give a shot at it.
I would like to point out that wood could very easily have been a building material in these structures, but rotted away over time.
I think the mud bricks should have been bricks since some of the floors had brick stairs or maybe block. The bricks turn into mud bricks from being underwater so much and would go with the style of all old blocks.
omg i absolutely love this, great job!
thonk!
i love your energy sooo much, this is amazing
So they had four armor trims which could indicate military rank and/or duties, mastered horse riding, and were skilled in pottery and metallurgy.
The Proto-Indo-European people came to my mind. They are the ancestors of the majority of European and South Asian peoples when it comes to mythology, language, culture, and heritage. Greek mythology and Norse mythology can be traced back to these people. The skill of forging metals for weapons and armor can be traced back to them.
With all these details laid out, I could probably give this trail ruin a name based on their language.
TLDR, I would call this trail ruin "Hludhistenom"
I love how colorful these look. It's clear that they were trying to make it look minecrafty, but at the same time different and more ancient.
It would be cool to see more ancient civilizations. Like, the Trail Ruins, maybe Mojang should add more ancient civilizations that offer new unique buildings and stories. Can't wait for 1.20
I think the rooftops might have used wood. But because they have been underground for such a long time all the wood used in the buildings rotted away. And only the bricks and terracotta remain
if i'm the one building it:
- due to the abundance of mud bricks and terracotta it translates to them having a supply of clay/terracotta somewhere so i'll add either a river, a swamp, or a terracotta biome nearby. but more likely only a river because: there's no sign of magrove trees growing, and you can get terracotta from smelting clays in the furnace. add some clay and sand deposits in the river.
- haybales around the farmland/village because one of the ingredients of mud bricks is wheat.
- glass panes on the buildings
- add a little more shrubbery like ferns, flowers, etc. flowers because they use a lot of dye.
- add beehives into the trees due to the candles
- place a few flowerpots
love these ideas!! definitely wish i had added ferns now lol
To be honest, I wasn’t really feeling it with the new ruins. The colors felt random, and misplaced. However, after watching your reconstruction, I actually appreciate them a lot more. Seeing the jumbled mess of colors could actually be parts of the roof that caved in, explains a lot. Great job on this. I might be inspired to do restorations of my own when it drops.
The large room is a type of furnace that people back in the day used to harden brick
The stairs would of been so that they can put wood on the fire
Before you changed the roof on itit had bricks which looked like it use to be a 9x9 square that had a hole in the middle of it
The bricks going back and fourth would of been like some sort of grill
and i think that this furnace structure would of been used to harden the terracotta
Hope this helped you :)
Love the build
Cool! I love videos like this. You are a true archeologist!
You made it look really good at the end
thank u!
Really hoping Mojang release an actual fully built one as an image or template, like they did with villages, so people can accurately rebuild them as a small personal challenge. Some new painting as well would be nice that you have to combine to reveal some lore or something. On the same wavelength as the wither painting giving players a hint that they can construct a mob to progress in the game.
I am glad I'm not the only one to rebild the original look of minecraft structures
