if you haven’t already, i recommend reading the genius annotations that ethel done for every song on this album. there’s a whole concept / story behind it and it’ll let you enjoy the songs and the lyrical content more when you understand it. great video as always smags :)
"enjoy" is definitely a uhhhhhhh... choice word for what understanding the story might let you do. Definitely enhances the experience though. Amazing album.
@@Evelynn_of_Runeterra I guess what I mean is that stories of child abuse, familial trauma, sexual assault, murder, and cannibalism do not bring me joy. It's certainly not a pleasant story. The listening experience is, however, definitely more impressive and profound when you consider the entire lore that Hayden created for this character and that she was able to weave these narratives together into a cohesive album. Some of these songs bring me physical discomfort after learning what they are about, but I am still glad that I know. Hope that helps!
The album is a concept album that tells the story of ethel cain (character by artist hayden) about the abuse of her preacher father, running from home, questioning her faith, meeting bad guys and eventually being pimped, murdered and cannibalised by one of her lovers. I'm not sure if hayden herself is religious anymore but she definitely is not a fan of the church, the album is definitely about how it feels to leave the church, also since she is a trans woman it is easy to imagine why the church from the south wouldnt be a great environment for her to grow up in
been waiting for this review for so long omgg 😭😭 but yes she is very christian and (to my understanding) the storyline of this album is her running away with a boy , but shes then drugged and eaten by him? idk i read this info on genius 😭 id love to see you react to "oil of every pearls uninsides" by sophie or "mutant" by arca if you got the time !! 💗
Thank you for reacting king, this was great. As some ppl already mentioned the genius song descriptions are a decent place to start to get an idea of the underlying story behind the album but beware the annotations on individual lyrics can sometimes be opinion and not at all true to the story Hayden (the artist behind Ethel Cain) is making. There’s a lot of bits and pieces of lore scattered around various places online that hayden released through her (now deleted) Tumblr, Instagram lives, etc. The current plan for Hayden now is to release an EP of B-sides from the album that further explore the relationship between Ethel and her lover that she sings about in A House in Nebraska. She plans to release 2 more albums to make a trilogy, the next being Preacher’s Wife (Ethel’s mom) and Preacher’s Mother (Ethel’s paternal grandmother). She’s also spoken about wanting to turn these stories into books and maybe movies. It seems she might’ve already started on the novel version of Preacher’s daughter. I would love if you could react to her EP that she released before Preacher’s Daughter, “inbred”. You’ll definitely love some of the songs on there.
this album is soo good, definitely read into the notes on genius if you want to know the whole concept of the album. it’s fully self-written and produced if i’m not mistaken, i’m really excited to hear what she puts out next
Third Eye Blind - Self-Titled Parannoul - After the Magic Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway clipping. - Visions of Bodies Being Burned you checking out any of these 4 would be awesome especially the third eye blind
Absolutely loving your reviews man! I think you might enjoy a good bit of Mk.Gee's new album "Two Star & The Dream Police" which has been contender for my favorite album of this year so far
Knowing how much you liked Grace, I would love to see you react to any album by Tim Buckley, Jeff’s dad. They allegedly only met once as Jeff grew up without his dad, but listening to Tim you can tell where the talent came from. Sadly we lost both of them way too soon, but both were incredible talented and had such unique voices! Would recommend Goodbye and Hello as a start, but you can’t go wrong with Starsailor or Happy Sad either, all amazing albums!
Dude, your videos are awesome!!! A recommendation I have is Graceland by Paul Simon! it’s probably one of my favorite albums of all time behind Meddle by Pink Floyd and Long Season by The Fishmans!! Your videos are great, keep up the good work!!
most people tend to listen to PD first, then inbred, then golden age. inbred and golden age dont follow the story of PD, not everything is real but its closer to true events from her life. i highly recommend both of them, and they are both significantly shorter than PD. dont be offput by the name inbred btw, its an experience of its own.
I recommend listening to “Caligula” or “Sinner get ready” albums by Lingua Ignota, they are quite an experience😅 Unique vocals and instrumentation and rlly deep and dark lyrical content Love your content❤
If you enjoyed Ptolemea then you’d definitely love Chelsea Wolfe!! That song is overall Chelsea’s sound!! Id recommend her most recent album “She Reaches Out to She Reaches Out to She” but maybe start off with earlier albums like “Abyss” and “Hiss Spun” !! :))
I’m loving that more and more people are catching on to he Chelsea Wolfe influences, I caught it almost immediately once I saw that Hayden has some of Chelsea’s lyrics tattooed on her
I would highly recommend reading up on this album if you're interested. There are a lot of concepts on here that I didn't pick up on my first few listens, and as skilled of a lyrical analyzer as you are, there are some you didn't pick up on either (especially Strangers. If nothing else, make sure to read more about that one).
If you haven’t already heart it I’d highly recommend the stone roses’ self titled. It was highly influential for music in 90s Britain. Cool dance drums and bass with alt-rock vocals and guitar
That thumbnail picture is right on point 👌 Another good choice my man. If you listen to Everything Everything - get to heaven. I will name my next goldfish after you.
We as a collective might not need it, but I need me a Samia “The Baby” reaction. The opening track is slowly building up to become one of my favorite songs.
Idk if you’ve got a recommendation for this yet, but Adrianne Lenker from Big Thief just dropped a solo album called “Bright Future”! It’s amazing and you should check it out!
i recommend you a fiona apple similar chilean artist called francisca valenzuela her best album is ''muerdete la lengua'' type 50s rock and 2000s punk mix, is type of female rage artist with curious and hypnotic voice
Once again I gotta recommend Pond-Man it feels like space again. I might paypal you like $1000 USD after but you won’t know until you react to it, but I might, maybe
the whole vid i was just thinking about how ethel looks like a garden gnome with an insanely large red hat
this comment sent me into orbit
I've been laughing at this for so long, oh my god 😭
LMFAO
the fact that almost the whole album is all self produced and performed,,,, ethel cain you will always be famous

@@Zekew24 you described enjoyed in the same sentence you criticized the term

She is spiritual still and very in love with Christian aesthetics but she does not really endorse the institution of Christianity.
Man, you need to listen to Lingua Ignota's "Caligula"!!
Huge agree! My favorite work from Kristin ^^
oh my god yes please
ABSOLUTELY
