  • There are many versions of this Woody Guthrie song but I have always liked this live version by Ry Cooder and David Lindley. Their twin guitars drain every bitter drop of poignancy from those desperate times. Magical guitar work from the maestros.
The art work is from a Depression Art Gallery:

Same times today, worse than ever. What a song. Woody’s deadliest, Cooder and Lindley’s darkest

Heads up, folks .. we are heading in this direction once again .. poignant, rich and tragic song .. when performed without ego by two such fine artists, why it is visceral in its message

This was my go-to song for cruising the Dust Bowl in my beat-to-hell Model T with an ass pocket full of rot gut corn whiskey and nothing but a worn old Colt 1911 for a traveling companion.

    Vigilante Man
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie
Have you seen that vigilante man?
Have you seen that vigilante man?
Have you seen that vigilante man?
I been hearin' his name all over the land.
Well, what is a vigilante man?
Tell me, what is a vigilante man?
Has he got a gun and a club in his hand?
Is that is a vigilante man?
Rainy night down in the engine house,
Sleepin' just as still as a mouse,
Man come along an' he chased us out in the rain.
    Was that a vigilante man?
Stormy days we passed the time away,
Sleepin' in some good warm place.
Man come along an' we give him a little race.
    Was that a vigilante man?
Preacher Casey was just a workin' man,
And he said, "Unite all you working men."
Killed him in the river some strange man.
    Was that a vigilante man?
Oh, why does a vigilante man,
    Why does a vigilante man
Carry that sawed-off shot-gun in his hand?
Would he shoot his brother and sister down?
I rambled 'round from town to town,
I rambled 'round from town to town,
And they herded us around like a wild herd of cattle.
    Was that the vigilante men?
Have you seen that vigilante man?
Have you seen that vigilante man?
I've heard his name all over this lan

Awesome accompanying photo montage', awesome and terrifying. "Working men, keep going----we can't take care of our own. Chamber of Commerce". It could happen again. Another crash seems likely, sooner rather than later, and it'll probably be bigger than the last one. Because, to paraphrase another song Ry is famous for, "The Very Thing That Makes THEM Rich, Will Make US Poor". Will we finally get to "eat the rich" this time, or bail them out once again? For the answer, see Ry's song "No Banker Left Behind".....

great song, great images. do we like it because those times are gone, not to be spoken of and then forgot, der traum recommenced, or because we think theyll come again, all to live (if we may) over again?

    • @chriscampbell9191
      @chriscampbell9191 2 роки тому

A bit of both, I think. If it happens again, God help us. Americans better find a way to stick together, rather than tear ourselves apart.

Incredibly powerful song, and the slide show was almost as good. But it would have way more impact it the mindless banter at the beginning was edited out.
