It was a wonderful night one of only three concerts he did that summer. Los Cenzotles opening then joining, Terry Evans and Flaco Himenez also, sort of a reunion since they had first all played together there long ago. It was full of huge music that eve.. and everyone stood for the concert as it was a no chair event ...so to allow more in, and it was ever so memorable. SWEEEET
The horseshoe type pickup on the guitar was placed right before the bridge and covered with a chrome hand rest. A volume control is placed on the lower bout. The mounting screws and pickup screws were made of non-magnetic brass, to avoid interference.
I believe it's this: 30's/40's Rickenbacker Electro Spanish Model B The entire neck and body of this instrument is made of molded Bakelite. Though this guitar appears to be solid, it is actually hollow. The neck is bolted on to the body. The neck attaches to the body at the 14th fret. There are five decorative chrome-plated panels that cover the cavities in the instruments body. The 23 fret neck was also made of bakelite.
I saw him doing this in London at ( i think) the Lyceum. I'l be honest and say if he had come out and just burped I would have been satisfied having communed with the great man. But when he dropped this on us, it was game over. I will never forget it. The sound of this echoing around a cavernous Victorian London theatre. Mindblowing.
There's an odd-looking Magnatone amp on the stage with a forward facing control panel and logo, behind Ry, to the left of him and the bass player. A modern reissue perhaps? Nearly all the original Magnatones had a rear facing control plate and front facing Magnatone logo.
Arhoolie records is gonna release those 2 evenings of music as a 4CD box set sometime this fall - Ry also played Pinko Boogie and Wooly Bully that night
I've never seen a Rickenbacher Electro B played as a guitar...it's usually played as a lap steel. Unless this is a version I'm not aware of, there are no frets--not to mention that the action is "high"...so he must be getting his finger played bends by bending on the fret marker--or he had the action lowered. Does anyone have more info on this set up or this playing style?
Ry Cooder..solo artist on stage..singing and slider guitar legend..fantastic with the rhythem and melody..
I keep coming back to this, very lucky to have been there!

Ry has the best interpretation of this Woody Guthrie song. Excellent. Thanks for the post.

Seen him live in the UK and he is simply brilliant!
3 times in England. I'me so glad
Thanks for this! I have been listening to the live album & now I can see him doing this great song!
Crystal Longdon I thought it sounded the same. Hahahahaha
Love the album! Great to see a video from that evening. Much appreciated!
Thanks! Just listening to this from the live album.
Awesome touch and tone. He played this on an ancient looking acoustic guitar with an equally ancient looking pickup when we saw him recently.

Omg. I’m in total awe. Goodness
Unfortunately this is the only video I took of the evening.

I think some folks have no respekt for great musians.
As far they have no respekt for any kind of souls.
lol at around 6:35, someone in the audience answer "yeah!"
why I love the blues. audience interaction is highly encouraged
Holy smokes is that a Chiquita travel guitar he's playing? Only Ry could make something so silly sound so damn good.
It's even more of a rare bird: a Rickenbacker electro-spanish from the 1930s, made out of Bakelite.
its feel
Capolavori live
This Woody Guthrie's song fets perfect, today....what a shame.
So excellent! What year was this?
2011, on a cd released in 2013.
Does anyone know the make/model of that guitar?
Rickenbaker electro...
