  • One of the more controversial characters in ‪@TheChosenSeries‬ is John the Baptist, and for good reason. But did The Chosen team go too far in their portrayal of the zealous cousin of Jesus? Sam and Tom let us in on some historical background that helps explain why John is so intense and also why it’s ok that he talks to Jesus with so much candor.

      Do people realize that the Chosen is heavy of 'creative imagination' and that a conversation like this most likely did not occur . Thats somethimes the problem with shows that are bible based. People who are more ignorant of the actual descriptions of the bible will believe it and then divulge it as bible truth.

Love seeing the notification that one of your videos has popped up and how much I learn from your scene breakdowns! The behind-the-scenes of the making of this scene was so good too, watching the actor playing John trying to let go of speaking his lines in the King James version, lol. Thank you for this! Greetings from Canada. In the way many wondered if the Messiah would come in their time two millennia ago, we now wonder if his second coming will happen during our time. Especially considering the state of the world today. Great job. I always love it when I see you're posting something new. As for the portrayal of John the Baptist? Who knows, I wasn't there, but it does give a good contextual visual, which helps the message stick in your head.

    I love the fact that the Chosen brings in the humanity side of Yeshua and Yon [John]. The fact is that Yeshua is incarnate. To see how two people who are here for a sole purpose and fulfilling it. The reality of doing what you are called for and doing it. Is not always easy. No matter how we view Yeshua today. He went through everything we deal with and struggle with today, being able to relate with us but never sinning. This movie and all the episodes have been divinely instructed I believe by our Lord. Enough to have us come and see...

    He in real life was daring though and definitely outspoken and was aware of sin and wanted to expose it!
    He was strict for sure. Did not mince words!
    Maybe he was an Essence.

    I absolutely love The Chosen’s portrayal of many of the Bible character’s, but sadly I struggle with John the Baptist’s portrayal, as Tom does.
    In the scriptures, John comes across as bold, but not arrogant; willing to stand up for what is right, but he didn’t seek to condemn Herod, as is presented in the show. John comes across as zealous for the Lord in the scriptures, he also comes across as zealous in the show, but that zealousness is tamed in the scriptures, but less so in the show.
    But if the characteristics of John in the show wasn’t specifically framed in the biblical and historical person of John of the Baptist, I would absolutely love this character.

    John the Baptizer was only 6 months older than Yeshua. When Herod's decree went out for all the little boys 2 and under to be killed, John would have also been a part of that. Josephus talks about a priest killed in the temple for not giving up his son. Yeshua told the Pharisees they killed Zechariah at the altar. It is believed John was hidden at Qumran and his parents killed because they would not give him up. People knew he had a miraculous birth. Zachariah couldn't speak until he named John. I'm sure they thought John was the one the Roman government was looking for.

  • @logicaldude3611
    @logicaldude3611 10 місяців тому

    The Qumran community had a lot of qualities that make them sound like the sort of community John came from. They were into ritual washing, believed that the world had been split into the sons of light and the sons of darkness, and even seemed to believe that through extremely strict and fanatical adherence to the Law of Moses they could cause the Messiah to come and usher in the Kingdom of God. All of it is very similar to John's seemingly unique message.

  • @marieketwomey4019

    I don’t think Jesus would have corrected John about being Elijah since Jesus is the One who said John was the Elijah to come if His disciples were willing to accept it.
    Also, I don’t think John would have pressured Jesus about the way He was conducting His business. I can’t see him going from, “I’m not worthy to touch His sandals” to “why do you run away after healing people?” It’s not consistent with the character of John in scripture. John loved Jesus and he knew Him. He’d known him from the womb. Also, Jesus called him the greatest man born of a woman. I just don’t see them relating this way. Although I actually really like how wild they made him.

    Love that you are commenting on this series. Check out the Maccabean revolt in 165 BC and who usurped the temple. The real priests had to flee to the dessert at that time. Bethabara, which is now called Qumran. John's lineage comes through Aaron and the Aaronic priesthood. Luke 1:5-10. Then through Zadok. The Qumran documents are full of the sons of Zadok who lived there and their documents note the wicked priests who took over the temple. These were not Essenes living in Qumran. The Essenes lived 25 miles south in Ein Gedi. Check out Who Defiled the 2nd Temple. The wicked priests were now in Jerusalem in the temple. Who is messiah always contending with? Where did messiah get baptized? Up in Bethabara. Hebrews 7 There has been a change in priesthood because of Messiah.
    The entire modern Old Testament canon was found in Qumran with the exception of the Book of Esther. For many of these books, these are the oldest copies found and some were complete such as the 24-foot long Isaiah Scroll. After over 70 years, we still know little about this community yet the archaeology, writings of the community and the large compound found there confirm these were the Aaronic Levite Priests, the sons of Zadok, who had been exiled to the Wilderness of Judaea by the Hasmoneans and Pharisees. They were the Temple High Priests replaced by a new unbiblical order. However, today, the world allows the Pharisees to teach us about this community. No wonder we know so little. This was the base of operations for John the Baptist and his disciples where he baptized Jesus(Yahusha) and was visited by Him later privately. It is among the most well-documented New Testament communities on record and the church does not even know because it is too busy defending a control narrative that the other books found with the Old Testament are somehow cursed when Jesus(Yahusha) and John the Baptist set this library as a time capsule. In 1947, the voice in the wilderness cried out yet again. Did you hear it?

    I have two questions/comments for you.
    1. The Bible says something like John was set apart from birth and he was to have no strong drink… Or something like that. I always assumed this was a reference to the Nazirite Vow. What are your thoughts??????
    It seems The Chosen took at least a step in that direction.
    2. The Bible says Jesus left Bethlehem for Egypt when he was two-ish. We are not told how long he had to stay there. John’s parents were very old, and could have died when he was still very young. If, he grew up in a settlement like Quorum. Isn’t it possible that although the families were close at the beginning John may not have known Jesus growing up????????

    • @Grafted
      @Grafted  2 роки тому

      1) Yes, from birth, John was under a lifelong Nazirite vow similar to Sampson. 2) Yes, that's a possibility especially since the Essenes did not value the Jerusalem Temple. However, Qumran wasn't very far away from Jerusalem but it is a long ways from Nazareth.

    Additionally, we know that Mary was born to aging parents (not young ones) and that Elizabeth was an aging parent (probably late 20s to early 30s)--they both were raising young Jewish boys to become Jewish men by the age of Bah Mitzvah--aged 13...not pretend men, real ones, with real survival responsibilities--playing and laughing would not have been high on their list--we know that this was a deeply religious family who observed all of the religious holidays--most likely what we would call Orthodox...they family spent some part of young Jesus life in Egypt, after his birth--and they did not then return to Jerusalem, but moved to Nazareth (a backwater at that time)...we know that Jesus was well schooled in religious matters from his meeting with the elders in the Temple at the age of 12, where they were amazed at his base of knowledge (when he was lost from his parents at that time)...this was NOT a family that took religious matter lightly and they did NOT just allow their children to run willy nilly throughout the countryside to become some sort of wild cave men...there is NO indication that anyone in the family was crazy or had any mental defects...Now--go forward and try again--and tell Dallas Jenkins to do the same--this is NOT who John the Baptist was and it is an affront to history and to the Jewish people...dts/usa

    This is where we quit watching the show. You got John the Baptist acting like some cool dude from the hood. And then you have him confronting and challenging and even correcting Jesus. It doesn’t Jive with psychology, or the tone of the scripture… John the Baptist had upmost respect, humble respect for Jesus.
    I think it’s a result of a lot of people who grew up in church don’t really know the Lord, but speak the language. When you get saved, you know it. And you can’t help telling people. And the reason we have shows like this is because…we don’t have people telling people…personally.

    I think in the Chosen they put too much words into the mouth of John. I really think that in the circle of Jewish people and especially ministers of God there was a high respect toward David and he was anointed one. I don't think that John even dared to think so negatively about David. And also nowhere in the Bible God says be careful. Therefore I don't think that Jesus said to John be careful. On the contrary, God always says "Do not fear!" "Be wise!"

    why have they tuned John the Baptist into some kind of wild cave man???? Mary the Mother was a cousin of Elizabeth--they both came from the same family...they both were brought up in Jerusalem...Mary lived part of her young life in a monastery in Jerusalem...they were Jews--and would have studied spiritual matters at a young age--as well as laws...they were most likely a kind, gentle, spiritual and intellectual family...John was most likely a member of the Essenes--a monastic sect that transcribed the Torah (the Dead Sea scrolls==not one or two--but thousands of scrolls), which would indicate that he was educated and most likely a monk...why NOW has he become some sort of a wild and crazy cave man? this is simply ridiculous--and does not square with any known historical account of this Jewish family...stop rewriting history--study it instead--as messianic Jews, you have a duty to tell the world what your ancestory is--stop laughing at it and get to work--DO SOMETHING...dts/usa
