Pyro doesn't even need a fem model, if you've seen real life female firefighters, their suits are so heavy that you can't tell what gender is behind them without looking at their face. Pyro's base suit fits that heaviness to a T, Pyro might canonically be female and had a female model this whole time, we just never knew because fireproof suits aren't skintight and oversexualized

I actually really like the last female Soldier concept you showed, she really looks like the stereotypical nasty female general you often see in different media, which fits the character really well.
Exactly. Soldier is a grizzled middle-aged man who screams a lot. Any female rendition needs to possess those same qualities. If she doesn't look like she can chain-smoke cigars, she isn't a good Soldier design.

I like it a lot partly because it’s the least misogynist of them all. Too many are far more youthful and attractive than the male equivalents, but showing it’s okay to be an older, more brutish, louder female is pretty cool

My complaint with most genderbend attempts is that they try to make the female equivalent far more attractive and youthful then the male one was.
Well if you look at the 'official' artwork of the "female mercenaries" from drew wolf, they all did look very young and feminine. The designs weren't that interesting but I don't think being feminine, impractical nor young is the problem, it's believability, all the design choices etc. Idk, something like that.
Women and men are just so different and it's hard to go and make one of the, pretty-good-looking 30-40 year old men into 60-year old women

I think my main issue with most fem-class models is one you wouldn't expect: They're too restrained. TF2 deliberately leans into stereotypes and exaggerated characters. Of the ones you showed, I think the female Spy was the best model because she looks *extremely* French, but I still think more silliness is needed. The absolute best was the fanart of Demo(wo)man you liked so much. It looked like it hit that spot if absurdity that TF2 characters should have.
i think thate fem sniper is the best, has a mod, a trailer, an amazing model, so for me its a solid 9/10
I'd agree, but her face is too flawless. Sniper's from the outback, and this is reflected by the impact sun exposure has had on his face. She needs a few wrinkles.

I think my favorite (mtf) gender swap art is the stuff that doesn't try to make them "pretty". Stuff that doesn't make them overly feminine or sexualizes the characters. I think that's why the Propass stuff is so good...the art isn't "pretty". TF2 mercenaries are not supposed to be "attractive. They're tough, rough around the edges, they're dirty, they always have dirt or blood or oil (or...other things) all over. The way to be the most true to the characters is to not make them women who happen to be characters, but characters who happen to be female.

the spy is so cool. it really makes sense for her to exist in the time of TF2 - historically, there have been many women who helped the field of espionage; especially in WWII and the French Revolution. maybe not by using a dead ringer and some trickstabs, but still.

I think Engineer and Spy both have the best gender-swapped models, since they both not only play into the stereotype of the original versions, but they also adapt it to be feminine. Femgineer is really good at capturing the hard working, hospitable-yet-assertive feeling of Engie's personality, and Femspy has the suave yet mysterious look from Spy. Unlike the others, which either over-sexualize the characters or are just a woman in man's clothes.
Seeing the Spy one makes me imagine the iconic meet the spy scene but as the females

The Enginher model gives me "We can do it!"/"Rosie the riveter" vibes, which I think are fitting. She looks like a hard worker with a big brain but also take care of herself as a woman

Fun fact. The Heavy was actually inspired by a Norman Rockwell version of Rosie the Riveter. In that version, she even has a big rivet gun (like the minigun) and is eating a sandwich!

One thing I always dislike about genderbending (transifying, as I like to call it) is that the female versions of a character tend to be sexualized for the sole purpose of being sexualized. I like to believe that gender bends should just be X character but an opposite gender, while keeping their core appeals intact. It doesn’t feel right when a character that’s meant to be super badass or scary becomes nothing more than a sexy woman, which is the big reason I dislike the most well-known Fem Pyro model so much (aside from the dumb idea of a fire-resistant suit being so skin-tight, it looks like a bunny suit). It’s perfectly fine to draw and like that kinda stuff for the most part, but it’s a pattern that’s been bothering me for a while now
that last soldier one is maybe my favorite out of the whole bunch. She looks like she encapsulates all the characteristics that make the soldier themselves.

I like it when gender-swapped have similar but distinct personalities. Kind of shows that people with similar personalities might gravitate to those same jobs/roles, but they're still their own people.
For example, the male sniper shows respect to the people he kills, and is shown doffing his hat in a moment of silence for them. The female sniper is shown spitting on the corpse of a target but is embarrassed about it in the interview. It's as if she also values professionalism but doesn't strictly adhere to it, leading to an interesting contradiction in her character. It also wouldn't stand out as much if we didn't already know how the male sniper was characterized.
It's actually fairly accurate to the actual differences between men and women in general, where men tend to stick a lot closer to their standards, and women have a greater tendency to give in to spite in the heat of the moment. Just one of those things that really shows the differences there could be between all the characters.
one of the things that i don't like about gender swaping is that they'll ignore the original body shape/build and age and make all the characters skinny young women and call it gender swaping, though some of the artwork for these gender swaped characters wasn't to bad
FemScout has appeared in so many videos, she's almost canon to me. But the Medic, Sniper and Spy are the best by far.
I could see these being full body cosmetics similar to the zombie and robot skins we can use on the Halloween and during the full moon.
Honestly, even though the fem sniper looks young, I still think it fits. Sniper in canon is supposed to be 27 years old, the difference between a women in her late 20s and a man is his late 20s is a huge difference in most cases.
Feels like the community accepted most of these designs at one point and haven't bothered to create new models to compete.
The TF2 comics portray the classic pyro as a woman, that and the more cutesy nature make me think modern pyro is a woman but there is a 0% chance we will ever know for sure. My favorite detail is that the modern pyro thinks they're helping everyone while the classic pyro is a downright sadist.

Heavy (Also known as Mikhael) canonically has sisters, one of which is married to the Soldier during the final events of the lesser-known TF2 comics. It could be easier to explain a female Heavy than any other class, seeing as someone could make a model of Zhanna and put her into the game. With some *dedicated* voice acting, clever adaptations of existing cosmetics, and maybe some reskinned, renamed weapons, she could definitely seem as one of the most official modded characters to be added into the game.
Mikhael: “Zhanna. I do not undermine your strength because you are woman. I just do not want to see you hurt.”
Zhanna: “Brother, you have seen me destroy robots larger than myself, your fears of someone being hurt are misguided but true.”
I feel Zhanna would work better for a female Soldier, especially since he's her fiancee. However, Bronislava, the sister with hair and an ushanka hat, would perfectly fit a female Heavy in my opinion. I know then there are 2 Russians on the team, but Zhanna could have been more Americanized over her marriage to Soldier.
There's one class that's been proven not to need a genderswap. Delak has shown that the demo we know and love is by no means limited to playing a male.
Fem Spy is easily my favorite, has enough style and charm to easily stand out as her own character in the TF2 universe and not just a gender swap of an existing one

Personally I feel the best genderswap is one that keeps as many aspects of the original as possible, and keeping close to the original design. This is for a few reasons one, it shows off the many different female body types as men typically get more representation in terms of there other sizes. Two it allows for a restricted creatitivty of thinking, what is both approatly feminine but still feels right for the character. And most importantly I just find it the most interesting! Of course I've always really enjoyed non sexualized rule 63 art, and I'm glad this video was able to show case a lot of great community art!
The FemSpy model is the one that I think nails the entire look. She really looks like she was designed from the ground up with the same ideas in mind but still came out distinct and fitting for the genre.
The concept art was literally perfect, all of them. Really wish they added those. They just do it in such a nice way, like I love how the Spy looks in that art.
Fun Fact: Sniper is not much older than Scout.
i think that on one end genderswapping the mercs meqns keeping all of their character and literally just changing their gender, on the other end because they are mercenaries you could make a female character with the same role of the original class, keeping at least the same vibe

You mention the lips on the female Engineer, and honestly, it brings up a good point:
A *lot* of TF2's art style is heavily inspired by the paintings of Norman Rockwell, and while the lips look... 'weird', for TF2, I think they're intentionally a Rockwell reference, which is neat.
honestly, I feel like using Heavy's sister Zhana, who even gets a pretty big role in the comics, as the "female heavy" instead of an actual gender-bend is far more interesting. Though that does sort of defeat the purpose of the video doesn't it?

If we were ro add genderswapped classes, I think they shouldn't necessarily be the same characters with the opposite gender. Maybe they could be characters with different nacionalities and personalities of their male counterparts, just to add a bit more diversity of designs to the game. Many of these artworks went for designs drastically different form the original characters and I really liked that.

@@spencerw9784 TF2 hitboxes don't fit the characters exactly anyway so it would probably be fine however I do see an issue with the female models being different sized than there male ones allowing them to hide behind things the male versions couldn't
The real question though, is why does medic have such unsatisfying weapon switch animations?
I remember seeing a video explaining that Valve intended to have both genders playable for each class, but due to time and budget limit, they only did the males. Also, each gender would have probably a slightly different hitbox, hence they would have had to choose only one gender per class eventually.
In my opinion, here are the genders that could have worked as female or not:
Scout: Definitely. Cocky baseball girl who shows off but is also super fragile? Pretty much identical to male scout, and it doesn't feel out of place.
Soldier: Na. He's all about "God bless America, I fight like a man, you fight like a girl!" He's mysoginist, xenophobic, and pretty much portrays the stereotype of a basic man. Switching to female would have made her the sort of super strict/abusive female officer. That could work, but wouldn't be as much of a comedic relief.
Pyro: ... Well, nobody can tell for sure if it's a male anyway (although the VA is male)
Demo: Maybe not? He's one of the most comical and popular characters for how messy he is: drunk black Socttish cyclop who plays with bombs, which gives him this mix of badass and miserable at the same time. Having a female play that role could work I guess? But I think it wouldn't hit the same note.
Engi and Heavy: Given the setting of the game, bein an engineer is mostly attributed to men, as much as being the Strong, dumb (but not really) Heavy Weapons Guy. Both fem versions are portrayed by the community as this "mature lady who can do the job", if it makes sense. If I had to genderswap them, I'd do it on only one of the two, lest they'd be too similar.
Medic: Absolutely. Crazy German female nurse/doctor? That would work fantastically well. Plus, her designs shown in the video really portrays the 20th century female doctor style.
Sniper: While I absolutely love the female design, I don't know if she'd convey the Australian stereotype as well: Hides in bushes, pisses in jars, has a big-ass knoife... I feel like Sniper is a reference and a parody of Crocodile Dundee, which is more of a male stereotype.
Spy: Since Spy is French and follows the "séducteur fatal" stereotype, Fem Spy is consequently the "Femme fatale" who'd call anyone "mon chéri". Would it work? Yes. Would it be too different from the Uptight Gentleman version? Mmmaybe.
sniper is actually the second youngest class so it makes sense for snipher to look young

Honestly wish there was a mod for TF2 that didn't outright swap the models, but allowed you to play as either the official classes or the r63 versions
I think the reason so many of the female versions of video game characters are very over exaggerated is that most of the people designing/drawing them actually don't have any physical reference as to what women look like.

Couple of years ago, I wanted to develop a plugin for TF2 that'd automatically apply a female class alternative on players when spawned.. I had to scrap the idea because I was informed that my "obsession with gender was weird".. I'm glad to see people are still interested in the concept, fingers crossed one day it becomes a full thing.

Gonna be real, I DESPISE it when people say certain body types are """unrealistic""". It honestly just tells me then and there that the person talking has never seen an actual woman in real life before. You say Fem Pyro is "unrealistic" and yet when I actually go and talk to people in real life, I can see the manager at my own local grocery store is TWICE as huge in chest size at that Pyro model. People REALLY need to go outside more if body types like that are "unrealistic" to them.

i say this as a character designer, a good character design should be practical to the character's lifestyle, and tell you who they are as a person just by looking at them. a lot of the popular fan swaps (except pyro Yikes) are pretty good actually but my favorite gender bent mercs are still the official concept arts, i feel like most of them really nail the core vibes of the characters they represent, without being too overly feminine or impractical. scout for instance, you are not going to be running around killing people in a skirt lmfao. even if you were to wear something under it, all that loose fabric is going to be in the way. pants, or even shorts, would be a miles better choice. or like, spy? her face isn't covered very well, she's even got a bit of hair peeking out from under the scarf, she's a lot easier to identify than canon!spy. i would have kept the mask tbh. (although the scarf is rly cute !! i do like it, hugely fitting for the time period, it's just not practical for the *job* you know? damn maybe she could do both, mask And a scarf.)
there are ways to make a character feminine and practical at the same time :V iirc one of the fem!heavies looks like a tanky rosie the riveter and i adore her. she's still cute, but she's also Huge and can crush your skull with her fists. the canon tf2 mercs are a bunch of silly, crazed, non-conventionally-attractive dudes, i feel like to do a gender swap justice, they would have to be similar. the kind of women who are fine running around in the desert killing each other, i cannot imagine are also the type to follow strict gender norms. and it's fine to design for fun, but if someone wants to do something that better fits the world and take it as a serious design challenge, gender is best left as an afterthought i think.
and just leave pyro the exact same lmao, the suit is baggy and unisex already and his gender is up in the air. the only way to correctly genderswap pyro is to do absolutely nothing at all

This is the first time i've seen a tf2 youtuber making a dedicated video about rule63 of the classes.
If you happen to make a sequel, i recommend at least referencing JoPereira's art from NerfNow. It's a very old blog about videogames, and he has a lot of characters in there that are just female versions of TF2 characters.
I think many people, including toofty, missed one of the most strongest aspects of things, and that is the custom voice lines some of these amazing voiceovers made.
Hell, I wish somebody would make fantastic Female voice lines as DustyOldRoses does, and one of my wishlists of life would commission her to make the Fem Scout and Spy to the most present voice lines, at least Love&War Update since Conga lines are gold.

A good genderswap should have similar aspects to the original character: a good rule of thumb is "if I gave this art I just made to someone else, would they be able to genderswap my art BACK to the original piece?". Really like the ones that try to keep to the same era art style; female Spy doesn't have a mask, but those big dark glasses, hair covered with a bit of that "fem fatale" look. I remember someone doing female Medic as a kind of WWII-era nun with the hood (because, ya know, about women not being in the military...)
Personally, I feel that the youthful, annoying, chip on their shoulder, has a lot to prove, wants to show that they're just as good in a fight as the rest of their siblings (from backstory) REALLY fits the Scout. Also, I feel the female Scout would rub it in a little more ("HA ha ha...you got OWNED by a GIRL! Ain't gonna live THAT down, now ARE YA?! I'm runnin circles around ya!")
P.S. That genderswaped Widowmaker works; showing off stomach, allure of sexiness, armor looks correct...
My favourite fem mercenaries are Scout and Sniper, especially there models.
Pyro doesn't even need a new model to be female and Heavy could work as "Mother Russia" aka overweight middle-aged woman with gun.
Soldier works the worst, many jokes of his character just don't work in female.
Everyone else works on the same level, maybe Demo not quite as well as the other.
Edit: Lore wise Spy would makes the most sense as a Woman, since most real Spies are female, due to their 'talents'.

This is a really cool analysis of the Femclasses! I honestly was SO concerned by the title that it'd be cringy, but I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually really well-thought-out and intelligent and analytical. Good job!

Also, on the Fem-gineer, since you drew attention to the face on the playable model, _I_ like it, but I couldn't shake the feeling that she feels familiar somehow. Now that I've looked a little longer, I can't help but feel like there may actually be a bit of _Dolly Parton_ in her face.

The female spy I think is my favorite, and not due to my bias as a spy main. The outfit looks beautiful and I kind of want it tbh, the cowl/scarf with the glasses is also cool and I wish spy had a cosmetic that took away the mask and gave the same thing with the cowl/scarf combo with some shades dark enough to block the eyes, only making his chin and lips visible and a bit of his hair.

I consider all the fem Mercinaries to be their own characters as oppose to the original mercs walking through a gender bending machine. Sure they can have traits similar to the mercs we know, But I think it's more fun if they got character traits of their own. More specifically, female character traits.
I like the idea that the femscout is less flirtatious than the original, has a short temper, and just enjoys chilling out.
And the Fem pyro being aware that she is murdering people and takes pleasure in it.
