@2:02 That special 'fixed gasket' you mentioned is actually the factory crush washer stuck on to your oil pan!!! You need to remove and replace that crush washer everytime you change the oil!!! It is not fixed and not permanently attached to the oil pan!!!

My professor at the University of Maryland Industrial Education Automotive class in the 1970’s said using the “old” oil to lubricate the filter gasket is just fine. It doesn’t matter. Well done! Thanks for your video. (I just purchased an ES350 and plan to continue changing my oil myself.)

Just bypass draining the filter housing and go straight for the filter is what I do .. it’s a bit messier but faster
It’s very easy to put the rubber o-ring in the wrong groove! For some reason there is 2 grooves. Also, sometimes when you remove the old filter, the metal screen (tube) that the filter slides over pulls out with the filter. If you throw it away without realizing it, the new filter will collapse, give you low oil pressure light, etc. great video.
Great video! I have but one suggestion and that is always wear latex gloves because when working with oil anything can happen and usually does. Keep up the good videos!

I own a 2007 ES350 and had it for years. I do all my own oil changes. There's no "lip" on the oil pan. What you had there was the "crush" gasket that's used (and actually should have been replaced), that was "stuck" on the pan. You can knock it off with a light tap with a screwdriver.
This gasket is aluminum, and has a blue coating of some type on both sides. Part # is 90430-12031 You can find it cheap on eBay. Personally, I use only the OEM one. A pack of 10 is about $8 (on eBay)

Very nice instruction, great video with commentary. I would just say for myself, I do not use Fram oil filter products. I have found them to be of cheap quality. Currently I use K&N Filter for my 2009 Toyota Tundra and will be using on my 2019 Lexus ES 350. Thanks and good driving to your Sir.

Good vid. Castrol Edge is the best synthetic oil for the Es350 trust me. You will notice improved performance, still maintain good gas mileage as well.

Great job!! BTW, my ES350 is a 2014 and the Oil Filter drain plug uses a 3/8" drive and not the 1/2" just in case anyone is interested

Small details I would drain the filter into a drained oil pan. If you drop the filter it will splash on your face.
Or drain the filter first into a clean pan, then slide it over and drain the 6 qts. Small safety detail

...You can buy a simple, but somewhat pricey adapter to convert the oil filter to a spin on type. It costs a little less than $300. Considering it appear to me that every adapter is hand made of aluminum that seems fair - and is the first thing I am going to buy when I pick up my new Lexus. (There is a YT video about it and the filter adapter does not make the filter poke down too much, maybe less than an inch).
Same procedure for my 2007 Sienna 3.5.
Walmart sells OEM filters for $7 and cheap Supertech oil for $13 each. I buy 3 containers for the whole year (2 oil changes) and the left over 2 quarts of new oil in the third container goes into my junky Honda.
Question:. Why do the instructions in a Haynes Repair Manual and the instructions that come with an OEM oil filter say NOT to use a pick to remove the o-ring on the oil filter cap when 99% of people seem to do just that?
Your filter would have drained better but it appeared you didn't screw the drain in far enough...?
Also, I agree completely with your logic: it doesn't matter whether it's new oil or used oil used to oil the o-rings (unless the used oil actually feels gritty between your fingers in which case you've already got a serious problem). Anyway people, think about it, your talking about a few drops of used oil that was perfectly fine in your engine just a moment ago before you drained it out (and then your engine was filled with it)! Also those few drops are on the outside of your filter element and there is much more still in your engine that didn't drain out that is pooled in parts of the engine. I understand that about ½ to 1 quart of used oil remains in the engine during a drain and fill.
I've never been one for torque specs, until I started working on aluminum engines, now the torque wrench is my best friend. If u aren't aware of the importance of torque specs, learn more, it's actually very important. If you're actually someone like me who thought tighter the better and I'm not taking about a woman. Lol... actually tighter can actually lead to weaker. The gap is tighter, but the bolt and threads become weaker. Torque = balance which in turn = stronger connection.

Torque requirements: 12.5 N*m = 9.22 ft-lb 25 N*m = 18 ft-lb 40N*m = 29.5 ft-lb
Oil still in the filter? Maybe crack the housing first then drain it, I don’t know seems only a few seconds to drain a filter. I learn when I do mine now . Thanks for good video.

I never use a pan to catch oil because the transfer to a container is @#&. I've been using a funnel on top of an oil container. Cost for the dealer job is $100. Thanks for sharing.
The oil container is too small.
The Filter Plug is 3/8 drive & the Tool may use 1/2 inch drive.
What happened to the good old spin on oil filter? Wow, I'm glad I watched this as I've never owned a vehicle before in 45 years of driving that had this set up. Well explained procedure to do it, though. Torque specs are important. I wonder if an oil change is approaching $100, even at a quicky oil change shop? If u figure $10 for an average filter and $32 for 6.4 qt. of full synthetic oil to do it yourself, it might be? I sure love my 2015. I know it is worth it.

I appreciate your video. One correction though, the lip that you stated on the oil pan is in fact a removable gasket and should be replaced with every oil change. If you question this, call a Lexus dealer and verify. Toyota and Lexus have been using a drain plug gasket for decades. Nice work otherwise!

very well made video. thank you a lot for sharing. do you happen to have any suggestions for the middle of the oil filter cap stuck (the bolt you screwed out by 1/2" extension) - it can not be screw out and makes me have no chance to replace the small o-ring for recent oil changes.
You don't have to drain the oil filter first but if you would like to restore that function you could try using your oil filter cap removal tool (not a ⅜ inch entension in the filter cap drainplug) to deliberately over-tighten the oil filter cap. Do this a little at a time. Then try removing the drainplug again. The problem is that the drainplug is tighter than the filter cap. When I had this happen I took the whole thing off together and then separated the two using a pipe wrench and ratchet.
i believe there were new oil specs to 0-30.

Great video. My only comment would be that the manual says 5W-20 oil and doesn’t specify whether it should be synthetic or dead dinosaurs. Is the the 0W-20 just a personal preference or is there some official or generally agreed upon knowledge that I missed?
Have seen a couple different references on which oil to use on ES350's even in the Lexus Forums. Use what it says in your specific year manual or what is on the oil cap. Also, you may give thought to your specific climate.
ES350's vary by year. Most Lexus' have the oil type printed on the oil cap - it will likely be 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40. If it isn't printed on the oil cap, check your owners manual for the exact type before adding new oil.
His oil filler cap says 0W-20. And even if it said 5W-20, 0W-20 would still be fine.
Just a question. When on the ramps, is the car leveled enought for a proper drain?
If any oil is left in the pan, its such a small amount that it wouldn't matter.

The drain on the pan is to the rear. Having it on ramps is better.
There is no lip on the oil pan, that's a stuck gasket. Put on a new one after removing the old one.
I have always started the car after adding the oil before checking the oil level to let the oil flow into the filter. Otherwise the oil level will be inaccurate. Is that not necessary for this vehicle?
If it's the same car you've changed oil in dozens of times or only a couple times you should know exactly how much to put in. That amount is not going to change so you tell me, is there really a good reason to check and recheck the dip-stick. I just put in what I always put in. Then I start the engine and let it run a few minutes and check for leaks. I don't check and recheck the dip-stick. But I will check it after a couple days or after I've driven the car for a short trip.

Only use the oil that the car manufacturer advises. You can find it on the oil cover or in the manual.

Just to confirm, since the Lexus uses an oil filter canister there is no need to add oil to the new filter before installing, correct?
+Reggie Overton ---> I never add oil to the canister even on cars with regular oil filters. The second you turn the key, the filter is filled. Remember, there is an oil pump in your car. My feeling is you shouldn't be worried about that at all. I mean, every moving part in your engine is mostly dry after your car sits for any length of time.... does that mean you should remove your valve covers and pour oil on your rockers each time you drain your oil? See my point?
jakeguitar01 there are more videos than not that suggest you had oil to the regular oil filters. Your comment makes sense.
This is the age old argument and I always say do it if you can like in this vehicle when the filter/ cartridge is vertical. Why argue whether it is needed or not. It had oil in it when you removed it, why not fill it when you put the new one on?? It takes 30 seconds - big deal. Also since you are filling the car with a given amount you can actually check the oil level on the dipstick and know it won't go down much at all (without starting) prior to starting because the 8 oz the filter would suck in is already accounted for/filled. To each his own though! Great video. Put the drain plug on as the very last thing - that way you drain the maximum out. Thanks!
It uses a cartridge oil filter. The spin-on filters are also called canisters. The housing for the oil filter holds about three cups (24 fluid ounces) of oil.
It certainly doesn't hurt to do that but I've never seen it suggested in any official oil change instructions.

I bought a Mobil1 M1c-251A oil filter for my ES350 2011. I have bought a Mobil1 M1C-251A oil filter for my Lexus ES350 2011.The oil filter doesn't sit as tight as the original one(it;s actually pretty lose) on the central cylinder of the oil filter housing on the car. is it okay to use that filter?
My car is stuck in my backyard without oil right now :(

I have changed my oil and done mechanics on my cars for 50 years. Never had a drop of oil in my eye. Even if it did happen, it is not deadly toxic waste.
The only thing missing from this video was proper gloves to protect hands, such as nitrile gloves. Motor oil is toxic.
From what I have learned so far, we should avoid using Frame filters because of cheap and poor quality. Why not opt for a genuine Toyota part? Just an opinion.
Don't forget to reset service light. It remind you every 5000 miles.

How many miles is that synthetic oil good for?
That depends on driving conditions and how you drive but in most cases I would say 5,000 to 8,000 miles (longer if you're going on an extended road trip - up to 10,000 or even 15,000 miles with a premium oil filter). Make sure your air filter is clean too. A dirty air filter contributes to dirty engine oil.

Why is the filter oil drain plug necessary? I just remove the filter and save the time and trouble of removing drain plug.
It isn't a critical step. The purpose is to empty the oil out of the oil filter canister so it doesn't get all over your hands. That's really all.
Less messy (and a little more complicated to prevent boredom😉😁).
It's not necessary but it is a convenience for those who prefer to use it. Did you know that some even drain spin-on filters first before removing them by poking a hole in the bottom of them?

Here is a rookie mistake that I see all the time - torque is expressed as ft-lbs or lbs-ft and NEVER FT/LBS!!! There is no engineering term FT per LBS!!! Yes, it does make a difference!!!

A nice reminder what a PITA it was to change my own oil! Not worth the few dollars saved. Oil running down my arms, spilling on the ground,
Getting rid of the old oil etc. PITA! I would never take a car to a drive through Quickie Lube. A dealer or quality independent is the way to go!
I enjoy doing it myself but even if I didn't, I can't think of anybody locally that I would trust to do it right. (Put in the correct oil. Put in the correct amount. Use the right torque specs. Etc.)
Oil will not run down your arms if you do the job right. It takes a bit of practice but it is possible. Connect a piece of hose to the drain tool or an empty Coke bottle.

So what? There is at least a half a quart of old oil in the engine after you drain it anyway. A couple drops more means nothing.
