Think about the way people see grey,purple and green. My mom would confuse the hues which was not far off but it's normal for everyone have to have a different perception .

So while we can normally tell each other apart, we can’t tell, say, chickens apart that well. But at the same time, someone who has four chickens of their own can probably tell them apart just by knowing them well. This one has more red feathers, this one has a shorter beak, etc. So people with face blindness have an issue in their brains that makes them not have that inane inner-species facial recognition, so they have to adapt in the way that many humans use to tell animals apart. Mostly by other aspects of their appearance like height, voice, hair style/color, maybe even their scent or something like a tattoo or a visible birthmark. It gets easier since they have to deal with it their whole lives, and from what I hear most patients rely on sound of voice the most to recognize people, but a major change in appearance can really confuse them the same way seeing your dog with its fur dyed a new color might make you wonder if it’s the same dog.
It was a bit like that when my boyfriend shaved off his beard. I felt weird about kising him. Not because of stubble. Because I felt like I was cheating!

I have like a PEMDAS type method of figuring out who's who that I can just run through real fast, it goes skin tone, hair (Color/length/style), whether or not they have glasses, height in relation to me, freckles/other facial markings, eye color. So I can usually figure out who it is in a few seconds but not always, which is really embarrassing
