Today on the show, we have with us Dr. Ramiyar P. Karanjia. He is an M.A., Ph. D. in Avesta-Pahlavi from St. Xavier’s College, University of Mumbai, and is presently serving as the Principal of Dadar Athornan Institute. Also, he is an independent researcher in history and ancient Iranian languages.
We are sure that all the regular listeners of TRS would've enjoyed this very rich and deep episode with Dr. Ramiyar. Hey, I have Parsi friends. I never spoke to them about religion because I didn't know about Hinduism 😁. What I observed is they are like us means they don't believe in expansion and forcing their religion on others. Self-enlightenment and sociable are wills.

S.N Tavaria was a parsi mystic who was a yogi and knew sanskrit.
No, they are not that smart, they couldn’t even preserve their own religion and culture in their “holy land”. The Avesta text is several hundred years later than the Rig Veda. Moreover, they have not got a vast corpus like Sanskrit prior to Panini. The Priest is using stories in the Avestan as historical evidence. I can’t see how Academics can take him seriously. If he thinks so called monotheism comes from his religion, then he is obligated to demonstrate the conceptual developments. One can clearly trace the Monistic conception from the Rig Veda to the Upanishads. I am not sure his religion possess such conceptual developments. Most Iranians don’t possess a rigorous understanding of their culture and literature.

@@ethos9403 I know this is not the right view, but unfortunately, there is the same view of India in Iran. Even though most Iranians are currently atheists or have secretly become Zoroastrians again or do not have that petrified Islamic view, their view of India is a little negative because of poverty and large population, and because of religion. Maybe if you come to Iran, they will say that you are a cow worshiper. Unfortunately, people have not seen our cultural shortcomings and see those of other nations. But I hope that with the disappearance of the Islamic government in Iran and more communication between people, these cultural differences will no longer cause pessimism. Sorry for being so clear, you asked me to be honest 🙏

According to ancient Persian legends recorded in Shahnama, the history of ancient Iran begins with conflict of Ahuras (Asuras) and Daevas (Devas). Probably, Daeva or false god or evil spirit Ahriman posed a great challenge to Ahur Mazda. Gayomart or Keyumars was the first king of Zoroastrians or Iranians. He was also the contemporary of Ahriman. Daeva Indra was also an enemy of Ahuras. In all probability, Ahriman was Aryaman who was one of the Adityas of early Vedic period. Devas and Asuras of early Vedic period were cousin brothers. They were always in
conflict for political supremacy. Puranic legends relate the legend of Tripurasura and his son Gayasura. Seemingly, Ahur Mazda (Mahasura or Asura Mahad) and his son Gayomart were Tripurasura and Gayasura. Avesta is the oldest text of Zoroastrianism. It is well known that there are significant similarities in the words and grammar of Avestan and Vedic Sanskrit languages. Avesta mentions Mithra, Varuna, Indra, Yama etc. Gathas of Avesta mention Rudra along with Angra Mainyu. Yajurveda’s one mantra (“नमस्ते रुद्र मन्यव”) also mentions Rudra and Manyu. Vedic and post Vedic sources indicate that Asuras also performed Yajnas. Gopatha Brahmana (1.1.10) refers to Asuraveda of Pratichyas (westerners) and Asita Dhānvan, an Asura Rishi. Asita is also mentioned in Avesta.
Shānkhāyana Shrauta Sutra mentions about Asuravidyā. Evidently, Asuras compiled their own Veda for performing rituals. The same Asuraveda came to be known as Avesta. Unfortunately, a major portion of Avesta text is now lost. Seemingly, Asuras, cousin brothers of Devas compiled their own Veda. Many Vedic Rishis taught Vedic sciences to Asuras. Sukracharya, a famous Guru of Asuras was known as Kāvi or Kava Us or Kaikaus in Zoroastrianism. Sukracharya was the son of Kavi. He was referred to as Ushanas Kāvya in Rigveda Anukramani. Asuras evolved Avestan Sanskrit based on their own grammar from Proto Sanskrit. Thus, Vedic Sanskrit and Avestan Sanskrit have been artificially evolved and limited to only learned people. The common people of Asura community spoke Proto Iranian that was naturally evolved from Proto Sanskrit. It appears that the early Asuras had settled in Gāndhāra region on the banks of Helmand River. According to Vedic legends, Saramā Devashuni met Panis, a business clan of Asuras on the banks of Rasa River. Most probably, Rasa River was Helmand River of Afghanistan. King Bāhlika (Kuru dynasty) and King Gāndhara (Druhyu dynasty) conquered northern and southern Afghanistan respectively and established their kingdoms around 11100-11000 BCE.
Asuras had no other option to migrate further westwards. They settled in Iran, Iraq, Syria and Southern Anatolia. Pani Asuras (known as Phoenicians in the west) migrated up to Atlantic Ocean and a group of Panis might have founded the city of Atlantis which was submerged by sea around 10000 BCE. When the monsoons weakened after 11000 BCE, many groups of Dānavas and Turvashas had also migrated up to Greece and Druhyus had migrated to Sumeria and Syria. Thus, the speakers of Proto-Sanskrit and Proto-Iranian languages laid foundation for the evolution ofall west Asian and European languages. Therefore, Proto-Sanskrit was indeed the mother of Proto Indo-Iranian and Proto Indo-European languages. It appears that the early Zoroastrianism of Asuras was extended from Iran to Southern Anatolia and posed a challenge to Danavas and Turvashas, the early settlers of Greece. Seemingly, there were at least two Zoroasters. The first Zarathushtra also known as Ashu Zarathushtra or Zarathushtra Spitama was the author of Gathas and Yasna Haptanghaiti of Avesta. Though Yayavara brahmanas of Rigvedic era had names like Jaratkaru etc. but Yayavara brahmanas always followed Vedic tradition. Sanskrit poets Bhavabhuti and Rajashekhara belonged to the clan of Yayavara brahmanas. Ancient Greek sources also refer to two Zoroasters. Hermodorus (10th century BCE) believed that Zoroaster I lived 5000 years before the date of Trojan war (1842 BCE). Eudoxus also placed Zoroaster I 6000 years before the lifetime of Plato (11th century BCE).
Evidently, Zarathushtra I flourished around 7000 BCE and authored Gathas and Yasna Haptanghaiti of Avesta and recompiled Avesta. Zarathushtra I was like a Veda Vyasa of Zoroastrianism. He transformed Zoroastrianism into Monotheism and founded the basic tenets of Zoroastrian philosophy. This is how an Asuraveda transformed into Avesta and Zoroastrianism
around 7000 BCE. Interestingly, Zoroastrianism accepted the Indian concept of Mahayuga of 12000 years that evolved after Ramayana era. Zoroastrianism followed equal length of four Yugas (3000 years of each Yuga) Instead of the differential duration (4:3:2:1) of four Yugas.
Danavas and Turvashas of post Vedic era were the worshippers of Vedic devatas like Mitra, Varuna, Indra, Nāsatya and Agni etc. These Vedic gods had been transformed into Greek gods. 12 Olympian gods are like 12 Adityas of Vedic era. The common people from Afghanistan to East Europe prominently worshipped God Mithra. Gradually, Mitra became synonymous to Surya (Sun). Zarathushtra I’s monotheism also influenced the philosophy of Mitra god worshippers of East Europe. Thus, Mithraism was born in East Europe and became a popular religion before the birth of Christianity around 600-300 BCE. Mithraism has been meticulously destroyed and wiped out by the Christian fraudster scholars and their authoritarian kings.
Probably, many Indian families of Balochistan and Gandhara had also migrated to Sumeria, Babylon, Egypt around 11000 BCE. Puranas indicates that the sons of Prachetas, a descendant of Druhyu dynasty migrated to west and became the kings of Mlechcha countries. Sumerians and Egyptians started learning the basics of Indian astronomy and mathematics in the post-Ramayana era. This is the reason why Sumerians and Egyptians also believed that their gods and ancestors reigned for thousands of years. Sumerians and Egyptians also followed the Yuga of 4,32,000 years. A group of Babylonians came under the influence of Zoroastrianism who evolved the philosophy of Judaism. Yavanas and Bactrians of northern Afghanistan and Turkmenistan learnt
the Surya Siddhanta of Mayasura (6778 BCE) and evolved Yavana Siddhanta under the influence of Surya Siddhanta. Many familes of Yavanas had migrated to Greece and western Anatoliaaround 5000-4500 BCE and came to be known “Ionians” and “Javans”. These migrated Yavanas traced the Vedic origin of Greek gods & goddesses and introduced the Indian sciences to Greece. Consequently, Hellenistic Greek mythology and Hellenistic sciences have been evolved. Seemingly, Zoroastrianism was declined around 3000-1300 BCE due to the political rise of Egypt, Sumeria-Babylonia and Assyria. Persia was under the rule of Sumerians and Babylonians around 3000-1700 BCE. The rising Buddhism also posed a great challenge to Zoroastrianism around 1800-
1300 BCE. The Kayanian dynasty was reigning over Persia around 1700-1300 BCE. Zoroaster II was born in Magha country (North Bactria, North Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) around 1307 BCE and revived Zoroastrianism. Since Magha was the birthplace of Zoroaster II, Zoroastrianism also came to be known as Maghism. Maghism or Later Zoroastrianism accepted the solar calendar and started celebrating Navroj. Kayanian king Gustaspa declared Zoroastrianism as the state religion. Acheamenids and Sasanians promoted Zoroastrianism. Unfortunately, the Zoroastrians of Iran and Turkmenistan had no other option to surrender to the barbaric Islamic invaders. The converted Magist Muslims (Zoroastrian Muslims) came to be known as Mughals who invaded and established their kingdom in India in medieval period. Thus, the glorious
Zoroastrianism of Vedic era has been wiped out from Iran. Today, a micro minority community of Zoroastrians in India is struggling to preserve their glorious heritage.

@@vkone7162 yes you are correct, Devas, Asuras, Daityas, Dānavas all were brothers born from different mothers, they were the sons of Aditi, Diti, Danu and Rishi Kashyap was their father
@@vkone7162 The genetic and cultural similarities between people of West Asia and India can be accounted for by some of the migrations mentioned by Krishna in Mahabharata. The context was post-Jarāsandha and Krishna suggesting to Yudhishtira to conduct Rajasuya yajna.* Krishna narrates the series of troubles faced by his clan (Yadava - Bhojas) on account of Jarāsandha and where they had gone in a bid to escape the wrath of Jarāsandha. Some of the names and incidents mentioned by Krishna can be cross-checked by other sources, offering proof of historicity of those and other references. There are some who were residents of western section of India beyond the Indus. A list of all of them is given below with cross- references wherever available.

[Raghu Vamsam authored by Kalidasa says that King Raghu, the ancestor of Rama went to Parasīka (Persia) during his Dig-Vijaya and brought it under his control. This is proof of connection with Persia even before Ramayana times. Bhagadatta’s cordial relationship with both Pandu and Jarāsandha alike could perhaps be the result of a conscious effort to keep up good relationship with powerful kings of Bharat to avoid any hostility. That perhaps continued till the times of Seleucus Nicator under whom Bagadates I served as a vassal.]
He was a vassal of Jarasandha as per the description. He was affectionate towards Yudhishtira and was a friend of Pandu, says Krishna.
It must be noted that a king almost by the same name ruled parts of Persia. He was Bagadates I, who lived in the 3rd century BCE and was supposed to be an indigenous ruler of Persia. He belonged to Persis (Fars) in present day Iran. Seleucus I Nicator was his contemporary.
The phonetic similarity with Bagadatta, mentioned by Krishna as powerful king of the Yavanas cannot be dismissed lightly, as Bagadates means ‘Given by God’ in Old Iranian. The meaning is the same for Bhagadatta also. Datta means given. Bhaga is another name for Sun. Bhagadatta is he who has been given by the Sun. Bhagadatta as a friend and vassal of Jarāsandha and as an old friend of Pandu, in good relationship with Yudhishtira can be expected to have taken back home many Vedic practices and principles. From Krishna's words, it is known that he had a special relationship with Jarāsandha.
The phonetic similarity between Jarāsandha and Zoroastrian lends credibility to the view that the religious codes followed by the followers of Jarāsandha came to be known as Zoroastrian religion or sect. Almost all the friends of Jarāsandha were in the West. Those who shared friendship with Jarāsandha but preferred to stay in the west followed the same Vedic religion of Jarāsandha, but some of them kept off from mainstream Vedic India. The isolation caused by this could have given rise to their Vedic life becoming different in due course.
The Vedic knowledge they had taken with them had become stagnant or mutated in course of time in the wake of reduced connection with mainland India after Jarāsandha was gone. That is how we have come to see some similarities between Zoroastrian Avesta and the 8th Mandala of Rig Veda. (refer Shrikant Talageri)
The 8th Mandala is unique in that the name Krishna is mentioned at quite a few verses. {This will be written in another article}. What is being highlighted here is that parts of 8th Mandala of Rig Veda was formed in Krishna’s times or a little later and people who have gone to the west of India had knowledge of it. With passing of times, parts of that knowledge had found their way into Zend Avesta.
Now continuing with other names,
10. Purujit, maternal uncle of Yudhishtira was favourably disposed to Jarāsandha. (related to Krishna)
11. Paundaraka and Vasudeva of Chedi.
12. Bhishmaka, king of Bhojas. (related to Krishna)
13. Krata-Kausikas (related to Krishna)
Those who fled to the West for fear of Jarāsandha
1. 18 tribes of Bhojas
2. the Surasenas
3. the Bhadrakas
4. the Vodhas
5. the Salwas
6. the Patachchavas
7. the Susthalas
8. the Mukuttas
9. the Kulindas
10. the Kuntis (till this all were related to Krishna)
11. Salwayana
12. the southern Panchalas
13. the eastern Kosalas
Those who fled to South (India)
1. the Matsyas
2. the Sannyastapadas
Those who fled in all directions
1. all the Panchalas.
Krishna also fled to the west. But this territory is Dvārakā!
Krishna says that 18 branches of Yadavas left along with him to start a new life in Dvārakā. He mentions this twice in this chapter in his conversation with Yudhishtira.

For eg, ishvaku vansh ka founder was adinath bhagwan and ram ji was a member of the ishvaku lineage. 63rd generation Ishvaku he was, to be price. Most Jains read Gita and are actively involved in Societal Hindu Fests but keep their own festivals very reserved and low-key. They keep them low key but still spend more money

@@mohdtameemahmed1601 nobody can say that brother. See, Shah is a generic caste, many communities use it. A shah can be Jain as well as normal Hindu. But Gujarati and Rajasthani Shah are more likely to be a combination of both. They consider both rituals to be one. They have faith in Lord Shiva as well as the Tirthankara bhgawaans. I have known many Shahs who have been Jains, Hindus, Both and even many Muslims use that.
Theoretically Modi is also Jain but he doesn't come from a Jain Community. He is from an OBC community of Gujarati but he doesn't shy associating with Jain temples and their programs and all. Bcoz Jain population is too low to have a significant vote bank, they don't just publicise their activities much but all Jains know what these men are doing for them at a given time. Most Jain Projects are non governmental because they have a shit ton crapload of money. They were friends with Hindus but now due to propoganda they are turning against them. They think Hindus had overtaken or snatched their temples in the past. And this polarisation is increasing.
PS- Adani is Jain.
I was thinking, if we lived that far north at one point, even if it wasn’t as cold as it is today, it would make sense that fire worship/ritual is so significant in Zoroastrianism and Hinduism.

Dr Ramiyar Karanjia spoke so eloquently on the subject of Zoroastrianism it showed his mastery on the subject. Being a Parsi my self I must honestly say that his talk was an eyeopener. He has really done the Parsi community proud. The simplicity of language his profound knowledge on the subject just shows how learned and well informed he is. Not a moment was boring I think he had me glued to the screen. the thirst hasn't been quenched. I was longing that this show never to end and wanted it to keep going. It showed my own ignorance of the subject as nobody before had broached this topic in such a beautiful story form,. of course he was prodded on by Ranveer and he explained every thig so simply. Very informative, and well informed on the subject. what I also learned that he also had mastery of Sanskrit which is the Mother of all languages. Didn't know Sanskrit and Avestan are sister languages. It would take along time to take up each aspect of this wonderful narration and comment on the same. I'll simply say enjoyed every minute of it hoping it would never end. God Bless Dr. Ramiyar and Ranveer for this nicely sequenced Podcast . Hope we have more. 😊🤩
I learned nothing
I am a Jain and I didn't know much about other religions until I started watching your episodes. Thank you so much for inviting such knowledgable guests onto this platform. These are the only times I feel that internet is a boon. One thing that stayed with me is his explanation of how Zoroastrianism explains why bad happens to the good people. That was such a thirst quenching answer. Another thing that I could gather from such podcasts is that the core of any religion is nothing but a set of principles. For eg. in jainism one core principle is non-violence and Jiyo aur Jeene do. For sikhism from what I understood, it is equality and to fight against injustice. For Zoroastrianism I think it is to protect good against evil. Non of these in my opinion is wrong. It was just an indvidual preference about which set of principles they related more with that people started adopting a particular religion. Over the years, some evil people have divided humans so negatively on the basis of the religion they follow and created controversies between them to use them for their own personal and political motives. People have also conviviently moulded the actual teachings of all religions for their own good and gains. But the fact is that in the true essence, roots of all religions are pure.
Ps. I'd love to hear a podcast about Jainism too.

It's great that through your Podcast you are giving others the oppurtunity to share knowledge about Parsi Culture. Dr. Ramiyar Sir is an Encyclopedia of Zoroastrian knowledge. After listening to him I can understand how this religion is bringing positivity to whereever they exist and Sir Ratan Tata is the living example of it, God Bless him.

I've studied in a Parsi School and it was so lovely knowing all this!! I had the same thought myself that its very similar to Krishna's story. Also, one random thought that crossed my mind during this conversation was that Globe is a little tilted, Sister Shivani says, we are at Sangam yug, which is shown like that only (5 minutes to 12). Is it that there's going to be an apocalyptic event soon and the earth will be straight and aligned again with pleasant seasons and peace throughout, the so called Satyug? Well, only time will tell!!

Just wanted to add the geographical description of Aryavarta as described in Manusmiriti shloka no. 2.22. In the Vedic Yajna of Sautramani even now we use Soma Rasa. It's found in Maunjabaan hills according to Rigveda and Atharvaveda.

Ranveer note Zoroastrian is connected to brahmins.Zarathustra was definitely a Kashmiri Brahman from India as he was an Atharvan[6], who called himself a zaotar[7], manthran[8] and datta.[9] He was referred to as an erishi[10] and ratu[11].[12] He also wore the sacred thread and dressed like a traditional Kashmiri Pandit, compiled Gāthās containing Vedic verses, worshiped Varuna (Ahura Mazda) and venerated other holy Vedic Asuras. He lived as an ascetic in a cave[13] for some time and also had other traits similar to that of an Indian Brahman, not to mention other customs similar to those of Kashmiri Hindus .
