    The best commercially available crossbows have about 200 Joule shot energy and 3 N s momentum. That is quite impressive and actually can be used for hunting big game at shot distances up to 70 meters.
    But now, a home made "post apocalyptic" airbow wipes all of those expensive products away. Made from plumbing parts and wood from the scrap heap, this arrow powered weapon fires a heavy, thick home made arrow at 511 Joule (377 ft-lb) of energy, with about four times the momentum of a 200 Joule crossbow.
    It is accurate enough to achieve a perfect "Robin Hood" shot from 14 meters distance, and can be charged by a manual pump, a scuba/paintball bottle or a suitable compressor.
    The power is just amazing. Even a triple layer "Stronghold" archery mat that can easily stop the most powerful compound crossbow arrows failed to catch the heavy aluminum arrow fired from this contraption... but clearly the most impressive test is the "double Zombie" head shot. Two coconuts, molded into two blocks of ballistic gelatin, were penetrated all the way with major force.
    This needs to be converted into a commercially manufactured airgun with a quick reload, large air container and cool industrial design! Specifically since German law defines this as a "toy" and it can be bought/made without any kind of license.
    A "The Slingshot Channel" production!

    Hey Joerg, we have made a super powerful t-shirt cannon before and we used the release valve from a abandoned washer/dryer. One of those big washers. It shoots a t-shirt across at least one football field! With a half full plastic bottle, will shoot very×100 far. The valve is pressure release so it opens super fast. Might wanna check it out. Good luck!

      Yeah the funny thing is in America, with our super liberal gun laws compared to the rest of the world, most states have an energy requirement on firearms to be considered a toy. I believe it's around 5J/shot but I'm not sure. So while you wouldn't get arrested on your private property for this "toy", you could potentially face some serious charges in many areas if caught using inappropriately.

    • @BrownBabyJesus
      @BrownBabyJesus 8 років тому +2

      There are some air guns which operate using similar principles although they use a cartridge which separates from the projectile to be refilled. Basically like a conventional bullet or cartridge only filled with compressed air.
      I think the problems would be keeping the arrow strong enough to contain the high pressure, not prone to being set off accidentally and still allow good arrow like characteristics. Especially without delving into areas which are restricted by law, as the projectile sliding over the barrel is what makes this be classed as a toy.

    • @corbonzo1
      @corbonzo1 8 років тому +4

      hmmm.. make the arrow itself a chamber of air, and have the same setup, but in order to properly work, the arrow would have to go in the barrel. so he couldn't make it. and then have a trigger somehow release what in the arrow, sounds completely feasible. the only problem is the arrow would weigh much more

    Joerg, here is another idea for you to bypass German gun laws: Another air pressure gun, having a pipe inside a pipe like this one you made, but the moving pipe would not be an arrow, but it would work like a piston to push a ball bearing, guided by 3 or 4 rails. This piston would have to be stopped from continuing traveling forward, with some kind of rubber. You could make more efficient perhaps by adding yet another pipe outside a pipe, forming 3 pipes one inside the other, which would allow for movement to begin, not just half of the way but 1/3 of the way. Since the piston would not fly, I suppose it would not need to go outside, but rather inside, having pipe inside pipe, inside pipe, in reducing diameters. That would make the last pipe move faster rather than more slowly. At the tip of that piston gun, you could also attach a knife, to make it super stabby instead of projectile launching.

And you can get the blades in different sizes and shapes.

      Not to kill a real animal, just use a target. I know you cannot hunt with a bow in most places of Europe only in America where it is allowed is some states. That's why I said in a SHTF situation if there was not law. It will be nice to see the range of that air arrow I think.

    Don't bother asking FX to make it.. Get some backers, a small cottage engineering / fabrication company to sponsor / build it.
    I'm positive you could do this yourself, with a small group of people. Crowdfunding would make this a viable and cost effective reality whilst you retaining ownership of the project. You don't want FX to bury the device in favour of their own branded products.

    Another great source for high pressure valves is a power washer wand. They aren't too expensive and can be rated for however high you need them, even over 4000 psi. I built my own arrow gun using a 3200 psi power washer wand as the valve/ trigger mechanism. Power comes from a 20 oz. CO2 paintball tank. It shoots a 20-inch crossbow bolt. The whole unit is mounted inside a AR-15 style stock for a Ruger 1022. Still a work-in-progress but it works great!

  • @chrishoesing5455
    @chrishoesing5455 8 років тому +1

    Joerg, you should check out piston quick exhaust valves. I have made a few of them for different air powered "toys". Instantaneous air release and not terribly difficult to make. there is no diaphram so they handle high pressures easier. plus you can use a very small rubber powered ball valve still to trigger the qev.

    Very cool. I had a thought about powering the pump. Ive seen people who have used various different systems to power them but they all suffer from the issue that they go too fast. How about an electric linear actuator powerwd by a microcontroller. It could be programmed to pump at a reasonable rate and to stop at each end for a moment. This would solve the overheating issues and should work perfectly.

    You sure do come up with a lot of alternative to firearm weapons!!

    +JoergSprave I just watched your 400 joule video and thought " that really looks like it might hurt his chest" and was just about to comment saying you should build a stock for it but now you've beat me to it. Thanks for the amazing videos!

    Have you ever tried to build a light gas gun? I don't know if you know it already, but the difference is you fill it with helium or hydrogen. These are lighter gasses and can expand quicker which means: same pressure => faster shooting.

    You are totally bonkers Joerg! That thing is wicked scary! I love the design and performance... What about fitting an air reservoir to it? It would be awesome to have multiple shots, and easy to fill when you get your compressor in. Also, a solenoid triggering system would be sweet as well, but I know how you love your rubber lol... Take care

      He did say that he'd like to see a reservoir if he can persuade the company he's flying to in October to manufacture a professional version of the weapon he's made...

      Right, I know, but he said he wanted to persuade the company to do a reservoir, but I have think that he easily could do it himself. Filling though would be the only thing, as he doesn't have a air compressor yet...

    That looks absolutely deadly. Maybe you could start doing some tests on complex zombie simulating targets, like pig parts from a butcher? Would give a good estimate about the destructive potential of your inventions. It`s peculiar that it is legally a "toy" but actually as dangerous as a firearm when armed.

    Ich brech zsammen 🍺😂 Rumst ganz schön das Teil! Respekt. Ich kauf jetzt auch mal Kokosnüsse 😂Falls du einen Gewehrschaft von ner Howa brauchst, schwarz und aus Holz. Übrig wegen Wechsel auf nen Tacticalschaft, den überlass ich dir unentgeltlich und schick ihn dir gern zu. So kannst du die Highend-Stufe von irgend einer der nächsten Versionen deiner Airgunspielzeuge etwas aufhübschen 😉

    I think a larger storage tank than that thin steal tube would make a huge improvement. This would decrease the pressure drop from filling the gas piston "barrel".

    Wow that is an amazing sniper rifle! Congratulations on the Robin Hood shot too :) If I could request one improvement, why not change the tripod for an attachable slingshot? A weapon with a backup weapon!
