That helps a lot. I did my first soldering today after watching about ten of your tutorials. Your an outstanding teacher. I made a charm, cast with delft clay, made my own solder, made my own sterling, rolled my bail, and soldered it all together. Thanks to your teaching. Thank you for taking the time to teach us everything. Also did my first gypsy setting after watching one of your vids. Broke two stones in the process but I finally got it right. Lol.
Mr. Harrison. Thanks to your instructions I made my first curb chain. I used a 1.8mm round wire and 6mm round mandrel. Its a personal milestone for me to make my own Curb chain after 25 years. I really appreciate it!
I’ve been matriculated with jewelry courses, and with what you taught me i’m this video is how in going to invest into my first projects. Appreciate it.
Beautiful chain and your skill makes it look like a simple, logical process. Something to aspire to! Thank you for all of your wonderful, well-explained teaching.
I just wanna say thanks so much! im a beginner and was looking everywhere for a curb chain tutorials. and seeing the way the made jump rings has saved me alot of time =)
thanks for the tutorial, it is hard to find much about making curb chains. the way I have learned is by placing one end of the chain in a vice and the other in a draw tong. then keep twisting until its straight and you may want to over twist so it will stay flat. I like your tutorials because they are very helpful.
As a novice multi media artist , I've found your instruction very nonintimidating . I really appreciate that , it gives me the feeling I can be successful doing this . Thank you !
I very much enjoy your teaching methods and have learned a great deal through your videos. Thank you very much for your interest in helping your students worldwide! You are my favorite!
deceiver me Those parallel pliers are not cheap. I need two. Once acquired, the tools will do the work. I’m getting two of them and a hammer very soon. I’m excited!
Soham again Thanks for the great videos. I am starting on the scroll work ring next. I have made a lot of the curb chain. I really enjoy making chain. I have decided to try a 14K gold chain, my question is can I use my pickle I use for silver with gold or do I need a separate pickle?
I can’t thank you enough for thses very clear and concise directions! I watched other videos and listened to explanations and couldn’t figure it out until I watched yours. Thank you! I do have a question. I have about 3 links that don’t lay right. I think I got confused (had 3 joins pop open) and twisted the wrong way. Can I anneal and flatten just those links and retwist?
Great video thank you. I've been trying to figure out how to do this by twisting the whole chain at once. This is much easier. Can u please do a figaro chain please..
Another great vid Mr. Harrison. Thanks. You sound a bit strict now and then, like a high school home-ec teacher. Have you taught at the high school level?
I made a copper version of this in heavy copper. What a teacher copper is for me. Copper plus heavy silver solder. I didn’t sand the links so the silver solder is spread all over. This is the most comfortable chain I’ve made yet. Correct about the plating. Had that happen to iron. Minor issue but issue to clean. Thanks for also being my teacher!
I noticed after watching a few more vids that you don't break many saw blades. What size do you use most and what brand? I have a bunch that my brother gave me and don't know anything about them. And I break a couple a day. : (
+Turk 182 I've have another video on making a Cuban style curb chain, he twisted the whole chain I tried it and it is not a easy as it looks I am still trying to get it right
+Gelson Silva Hello friend, you twisted one link at a time, it would be easier to hold in Morca hold the other end with pressure pliers and twist ! It's the tip!

Ok ... so say i forgot to oval the links before twisting them 90 degrees and now my chain has a spiral like twist when I hold it in the air. Is there anyway to oval them out after they have been Twisted 90 degrees ? Or is there a way to flatten them back out and start over so I can oval them first?
Katherine Spann Hi Katherine, if I can answer your question for you. its the exact same process, using thicker round wire and the a lot of filling down afterwards. if the links are tight and close together you may want to link them one at a time and twist them 90 degrees as you go along, before adding the next. Hope this helps.
If you mean what is he putting it into after he solders it, he first quenches it in water if it is hot, then he pickles the silver to remove fire scale. You can use several things for pickle. This is the solution he said not to use steel with as it will cause the copper in the silver to plate the outside. I suggest you read about various pickles and how to use them properly before deciding which one you prefer to use.
I have a question if I may ask, I have trouble when bending the curb into a flat shape because my links always break t the soder point, is that from a weak soder, using a soder paste, or to thick of metal gauge? I'm aspiring to learn how to make thick men's heavy curb bracelets but I don't know where to look besides youtube
that is 2mm and 2.5mm wire. i think you would be better off using hard solder and flux. you would have to put quite a large glob of paste on to have enough to solder the join correctly. are you making sure the join is as close as possible. if you have a large gap that is filled with solder this could also be the cause since solder isnt as strong as the sterling.
+soham harrison thanks! Yes 2 or more reasons was the case, paste was weak and gaps. I got some hard solder and used enough flux and that worked, I was able to bend and straighten the chain no problem, thanks again for the help I really appreciate it!
Notice you are not wearing dark glasses, I just unsuccessfully tried to cut Pyrex glass tubing in a lathe by scoring it with a carbide tool and then using a mini oxy/acetylene torch tried to use the method seen on another youtube video where it just drops off, the flame is so bright I have to wear welders goggles, is the torch you use not bright?
The torches are pretty bright but not nearly as harmful as welding torches. On the long run though...doubt you will find a goldsmith whose been in the business for 30 years and not wearing glasses.
Arnhem Antiques lol I know this comment is old but I just had to note that you find anyone who's been in ANY business for 30 + years they,re likely to be wearing glasses....it's called "aging" lol
Hello Mr. Harrison. My name is Josiah. I am trying to make a curb chain for a silver heart pendant that will look very similar to this when I cast it: www.seresgifts.com/sterling-silver-small-bubble-heart-necklace.html It will be about a little less than and inch wide and tall. If I want a modest curb chain without making the pendant look out of place, what gauge wire and ring size should I use?
Soham I have been watching you for a few years and learning as I go and you are by far one of the best ever to learn from. You are gentle and calm, and to watch it the way you work its very easy to get started on my own. You give me confidence...I love your vids.
my friend, I m so sorry to say this, but you have no clue what you are doing there. all of your steps, and I m entirely sure when I say that, nothing you have done there is right!
Haha, as if there's only one way to accomplish something. Over the years, I've taken classes from a number of different instructors, and every single one of them has their own twists on how to do something. Surprise - they all work. You just find the one that works best for you, modify it as needed, and use it. The man made a curb chain. Are you saying it's NOT a curb chain? Well, you can't say that because there it is, right in front of you. Your way is not always going to be the ONLY way. ^ _ ^
you can gently planish, gently roll through the rolling mill, or place in lacquer and file. i say gently because where the metal crosses it is easy to get it too thin
1 min into this and I'd just like to acknowledge what a great, thorough, calm, knowledgeable teacher you are...great ! Onward....
" Do them all...! " Brilliant...! Thanks !!

thank you so very much,, i have searched for information on 'how to make a curb chain"for two days, and YOU gave good instructions on how to do this.
Thank you so much for your teaching. It is fantastic for someone in a rural area trying to learn.
That is AWESOME! I can't wait to try it!!
I love your videos. .. thanks
Excellent job and good information on tools , i was wondering how to flatten it evenly, thank you.
I have watched most of your videos and each one I learn something new. Thanks
Hi Soham. You are the Bob Ross of jewelry making!
Wow is not enough for this video. Enjoyed all of it.
Nice tutorial, well presented. Nice chain too.
thank you Soham, thank you greatly! I lm a jeweler and my greatest challenge was trying to get my chains straight after bending the links. Thank you

great videos, can you do one on how to make gold solder, the different hardness. i would like to be able to make my own. thanks

Amazingly wonderful

I’m now ready to make this. 👍

Is there a link or reference to the math involved in bracelet link vs. wire thickness ?
1 second into the video and you hypnotised me. You should deal with gold. I'm sure you will be one of a kind.
You are awesone, thanks for sharing.
Perfect. I wonder how that would work with high quality gold-filled?
thanks for this video ...
I see curb chains with some flatten areas. Do you how that's done?
Can you twist the entire chain to get the links bent instead of doing one at a time?
+Turk 182 I've have another video on making a Cuban style curb chain, he twisted the whole chain I tried it and it is not a easy as it looks I am still trying to get it right
I have a question, how thin do you roll your solder out and how wide?
Nice video. Where did you get the wire wrapping mandrel? Thanks
it is an aluminium knitting needle
Very tedious job! Nice work…
Excellent tutorial
What flux are you using?
Great video by the way.
Kufunklefec borax based: handi flux, and here in OZ i use tenacity4A
have you ever tried to make a wheat chain? it has two chains inter locking, one is twisted like the curb chain in the video and the other is oval.
very nice.. thanks for sharing.
Olá amigo ,você torceu um elo de cada vez ,seria mais fácil prender na morça prender a outra ponta com alicate de pressão e torcer!Fica a dica!
+Gelson Silva Hello friend, you twisted one link at a time, it would be easier to hold in Morca hold the other end with pressure pliers and twist ! It's the tip!
Do you have a video showing how to do a figarro chain 3 round rings 1 large oval ring

Hi ! What's the name of your torch ? And do you work with propan ? Thank you in advance for your answer

i knew that with a little research i would eventually find answers.
Thanks
Excellent

it would be easier to make a new chain
Yeah. I was trying to make it a tighter linked chain but it ended up having a bad twist to it and the links are wanting to flip out of unison.
It was my first attempt at a chain . Live and learn i guess lol thanks for getting back to me
Sir could you show us how to make the links fpr a Miami Cuban link curb chain
Katherine Spann Hi Katherine, if I can answer your question for you. its the exact same process, using thicker round wire and the a lot of filling down afterwards. if the links are tight and close together you may want to link them one at a time and twist them 90 degrees as you go along, before adding the next. That's not the true way to turn the links to get a curb link. Refer to yaring platero
Perhaps not, but he is showing us a great way that we can do it easily and I for one am very grateful!
