    rio grande has copper wire solder, but it comes in one pound spool, i tried it and wasn't very happy with it. just use silver solder from rio (hard)
    i recommend handy flux from rio. if you do a good job with the silver solder there shouldn't be much clean up. if you solder on the back of your jewel it should be cleaner.

    I loved your info about fira scale and bring up the silver. I am and old school jeweler from Brasil and jewelry making was my first trade for the past few years I got back into it and so many diferent tech and equipments. my question is.I do my own ingots and I mill my metals as I need and after finishing the piece is just a lot of fire scales I was undering if it wiil work after all the final filing and sanding bring it up the silver and hand polish on the flexshat or if you know a better way to reduce the scale. my pieces some times is very elaborated with lots of soldering.
    thanks you are the best.

      after you bring up the silver, tumbling is necessary, if you polish with a mop, the fine silver is polished off and firescale is visible.

    Wouldn't it have been better to pattern your metal first before cutting to size? The patterning could very well stretch the metal and distort the original measured size.

      there are many ways to do things, this is just one. patterning before hand works too.

    This looked to be brass to me? Did you use silver solder on it? It's perfectly beautiful and now, thanks to you, we know two ways to make an anticlastic ring!

    I have been at the bench for eight years on and off and gypsy setting is a skill that I didn't get round to learning at college, however, now I'm looking forward to giving it a try as soon as I can, I have already made a very tiny burnisher out of some 2mil steel dental wire, so will let you know how I get on ;-)

    This is great! I would love to learn how to make a spinning ring so the edges of this type of ring would be flared up slightly to keep the outer spinner from falling off.
    BTW, since I found you I have been continuously watching. Thank you!

    Soham, what metal did you use for this ring? I am a beginner and your videos have helped tremendously. Thank you!
    I have just ordered a tumbler and can't wait to use it :)

    Is the Tenacity 4A Flux better than Rio Grande's Handy Flux? The website (JM- metal joining) has it as a powder flux,, does that mean you mix it with your own distilled water? What is your fav? Ma- ha- lo! ; )

      rio's handy flux should be the same

    Thank God you pronounce the word 'solder' correctly, otherwise I would have switched you off immediately! It makes your video's very watch able, you are patently a very knowledgeable gentleman. I came here from the Gipsy set stones videos which were marvellous, thank you very much indeed.

    What gauge silver are you using for the ring?

    • @sohamharrison
      @sohamharrison 10 років тому +1

      18 or 19, get yourself a conversion chart. i only use the metric system

    very nice video! Did you use copper to make that ring ? Also, if I don't have that shaper tool to shape it in the middle with the depression like you did with this ring, is there another way to shape it that way with the depression in the middle?

    • @1soham1
      @1soham1  7 років тому +2

      brass. just hold the ring sideways on a flat surface and use a doming punch. do both sides

      soham harrison, yes, you are so bright. That will definitely work well

  • @sohamharrison
    @sohamharrison 11 років тому

    yes this is brass and silver solder, but if you do a good job it is ok. rio has yellow silver solder which would probably be better, but i only use brass for demos.

  • @sohamharrison

    just sand the end and polish it. it should work well. i just used an old burr, sanded the ball off and then polished the end

    brass, but it will turn your finger green, use sterling
