"If you see a young QB throwing a ball that wiggles, its probably because one of these two reasons" *cuts to next point without telling you the two reasons* Ok then, helpful.
This is Coach Van Tassel from My Football Mentor. Intermediate to longer throws usually involve a single or double hitch step in your five step drop. The step into your throw combined with good hip and shoulder rotation will increase the distance on your throws. If you are not taking a hitch step, as some throws are five steps and throw only, make sure you are getting the rotation I spoke of and have a good follow through with your arm.
It does. Sometimes it can be your throwing mechanics that are off. Make sure you've got a correct grip on the ball, and that you're planting your feet correctly before you throw. Sometimes the problem is in your legs, your sternum, and not your hands or arms. Checkout these 2 videos on our QB playlist. *QB Instruction: Play Action Pass *Quarter Back Training: How to Grip a football. Hopefully that helps. Be great!
This video help me a lot, it allowed me to pass for 4612 yards and 47 TDs a new record for my county and my region. Also this video help me and my team go out to the state finals against the Ranger Creek Bears, a team that won the championship 4 times in a row and considered as juggernauts. But we adapted and overcome to win a state championships as underdogs
Hi Aahan, If the ball is rotating slowly that means that you are shot putting the ball too much. The ball must roll off of your fingers from your pinkie to your index finger with the index finger being the last finger to leave the ball. the index finger must be pointing towards where you are throwing and the thumb should be down.
This is Coach Van Tassel from My Football Mentor. To reply to your post about your arm becoming sore after throwing for a long time, make sure you are warming up properly before you throw and be sure to ice your arm down after throwing for long periods. Any QB can get a sore arm if they throw for a long time. Remember to apply appropriate shoulder rotation when you throw so you are not using all arm. I would suggest buying our videos in order to see what's involved with throwing properly.
We caught up with coach Cunerty and got him answering your question on video. It's up as a video response for you. He answered exactly why the ball starts turning, and a couple of drills to help you fix it. Hope this helps.
Hi gosalgaming, here is a link to one of our videos that can help you with the ball spinning side ways. B great. ua-cam.com/video/bMUKL5Qq3jY/v-deo.html

How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?... Yeah... Coach woulda put me in fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind.
Hey Coach, Thank You for taking the time to teach ... you are appreciated... My son is 11 years old and coming along well in the QB position. The reason I'm contacting you is I'm noticing at the youth level most kids have some difficulty in catching the ball. As result of that my son will hesitate his throw. What do u suggest to improve has timing. Can u recommend a drill that will train him to trust what he see's and to release to ball faster ? Thank You again Coach ...
He talks in a little more detail about it in our video "Quarterback Training - The Three Types of Throwers" (just copy and paste it into the UA-cam Search box.) Look for videos of Randall Cunningham (where he's not running) and Michael Vick, they're both Slingers.
Hey Coach, great stuff. I had great coaches years ago that trained me this way. I find my self blessed, because it helped me personally in my football carreer. But helps me now knowing somethings may change, but this technique surely doesn't. Thanks again!
Wow, this sounds like it could be the best video on throwing mechanics I've seen! There just isn't anything out there on this subject that is very detailed and it certainly sounds like this one is. I've got some youth kids I want to teach and this looks like just the thing!
Hi Filip. It sounds like you have great potential at QB position. Yes, we have several in-depth videos for the position. They range from 14 - 30 minutes in length. See our website: MyFootballMentor
I can throw perfectly for about 20-40 yards. anything below or over that range could use work. for some reason my fastest, best spiraled, most accurate passes are in that range. too bad this doesn't even matter, I play linebacker 😂
You will find that throwing the football with less velocity and more accuracy will de-emphasize your grip. If you are having difficulty gripping the football because of the size of your hands don't be afraid to try gloves. Payton Manning did this because he was having trouble gripping the football in cold weather due to a weaker grip caused by his neck injury.
Hello coach. Could you explain in detail the importance of how the fingers roll off the ball and how this affects. the release and the spin there after.
I was taught to always keep your elbow at a 90 degree angle or at or higher than your nipple lol when throwing the ball ,, good video ,, always having a air pocket in your palm when throwing is crucial too which you explained
WOW!! This Video helped me go from throwing 2000 Yards and 21 TDS My Sophomore year to 47 Passing yards and -1 TDS!!!! Im currently ranked last in my Madden 25 Franchise!
It's very difficult to say what you are doing wrong by the description you give of "it looks as if I am throwing a dart". Throwing a football starts with the feet, goes to the hips, then the shoulders and lastly the arm. I would suggest purchasing our QB videos as they are great teaching tools. If you are throwing the football like a dart you most likely do not have your feet set correctly as that will diminish all the other mechanics I just mentioned. SparkyXP3, arm strength really is dictated by rotation of the hips to the shoulders. The rotational force you create with the hips and the shoulders increases velocity on your throws. As far as actual arm strength exercises, use cables in your gym by simulating a throwing motion. It doesn't require a lot of weight and do three sets of 20 repetitions twice a week. Coach Van Tassel
When I was in high school my best friend and me were both competing for the qb position. In the winter months we would sit in chairs in the basement and throw to each other for some of our workouts. Every night. In the day time we would throw in the front lawn. We both had a great advantage because even in our practicing we were competitive. We were extremely dedicated and disciplined.
Make sure you are not flat handing the ball. In other words, make sure there is a gap between your palm and the ball. This will make sure the ball leaves your hand with the tip of the ball angled properly. See if that helps.
I'm going to buy the full length video. Does these tips help me to correctly throw the ball to avoid my usual shoulder numbness. I'm really a novice and every time I go throw a ball for more than 30mins I feel sore somewhere just below shoulder.
Taylormadeent1, your question didn't get "blown off" as we try to get to all of them if possible but sometimes that is difficult. Tips for a lefty are no different than how you do everything as a right handed thrower. Coach Van Tassel
Hi Aahan, it's difficult to give you advice as we haven't seen video of your throwing mechanics. Our training videos are inexpensive so I'd start there. Also pay attention to how you grip the ball, be sure there is an air gap/space between ball and your palm. Be great.
Lastly, if you are a freshman and are now throwing a bigger football than what you were use to in youth football, it will just take a bit of time to adjust to a larger ball.
Throwing so your thumb rotates down seems so counterintuitive! I've always thrown so my hand opens up. I'm a lefty, and I'm able to throw a perfect spiral very hard and very far. But I gotta try this technique since every Pro QB throws with their thumb rotating down. I've been doing it wrong all along. (I don't play organized FB).
So, out of the three types, which is the most preferable form? I personally do not like launcher type as that form didn't have enough accuracy - maybe that's me but that's how I always felt. I think I'm pretty close to the puncher type - if at all, I was taught that the throwing motion has to be compact for various reasons.
MrKeepnit100 The most important part of throwing a slant route is to have the QB's drop match the route. I would suggest getting coach Cunerty's QB videos at www.myfootballmentor.com as he covers all of those types of mechanics and specifics. There are many variables to throwing a slant route including the type of coverage when running the route...first window read, second window read, and so on...too many to give a simple explanation for.
Hey coach, I found your videos extremely helpfull but I get a sore elbow after throwing the football. It can happen even after 15 minutes of throwing and I do start by warming up. I can tell that something went wrong with my throwing motion when it starts to hurt but I cannot tell what is the thing I am doing wrong. The pain is more like elbow being extremely weak ("dead") and is on the inside of the elbow not outside. Do you know what might be the problem? Thank you very much for your wisdom.
First of all you want to make sure you are not over-gripping the football or using a "death grip" as Coach Cunerty mentions. You don't have to grip the ball as tightly as you might think in order to throw it properly. Also, take something off of your throws. Don't try and throw the football too hard. Bill Walsh use to say that it's not how hard you throw but how accurately. It's much more difficult to throw accurately when you try and throw too hard.
Hello Coach, I love your videos, they are very helpful. Lately I have been noticing my arm becoming soar after throwing the football for a long time. I'm not very tall so i have to throw harder while i consider myself a launcher throwing the ball, is there something you can recommend for me like changing my mechanics. (I do use my legs a lot, even in short passes.)
hi i am throwing a spiral for a short distance and it goes really slowly, how can i get the ball to come out of my hand a lot faster and just have more velocity on it. also, what is the trick to throwing a perfect spiral and what are some quick tips to improve my throwing motion?
It could be a few things. Why don't you take some video of you throwing and leave it as a video response? This way we can give you exact feedback, other than general suggestions?
ah tnx very helpful tips i'll try them out. but can a launcher also be a slinger? where i can through it with a high release but from the cock position i now tend to let the ball other end point away from my body. also can a 130 lbs throw 60 yards what is the avg. yards if a person weighs like this tnx.
Not really as they are two different throwing motions. The launcher keeps the elbow in tight and the follow through is high and above the head. The slinger tends to let the elbow extend out from the body more, the ball is not above the head, and he will turn the point of the ball out as he draws his arm back. Watch video of Michael Vick as the slinger and Tom Brady as the launcher. We suggest that you work on the style that feels most comfortable and natural for you.
If you really want to learn from a true QB guru, watch QB coach Joe Dickinson videos and contact him about learning how to play the position at the highest level. He has the coaching resume most of these guys wish they had and knows how to teach the finer points of the proper throwing motion.
What's the music for? Getting in the way of the message? (you did it) Annoying the watchers? (you did it again) Making the video look cheap and homemade? (on the mouche).
I pretty much always get perfect spirals when I throw but after a while my throwing arms shoulder hurts a lot. Like if I try to bring it up sometime I just can’t. Can you give me tips on what I’m doing wrong
Since nobody replied - if you are throwing a perfect spiral you are doing things right. If your shoulder is sore you threw too many. Not everybody has the same shoulder structure. Some are going to be more prone to impingement. When I had shoulder surgery for inflamed bursa sacks, bursitis, the doctor also shaved away some of my glenoid cavity to give my arm more clearance.
I have good velocity up to 12 or so yards but it slowly starts to decrease the longer the throws get. Any tips to slowly increase intermediate and deep velocity?
When I release the football, a lot of the times it feels like i dont have complete control over the release of the ball and therefore I lose a lot of accuracy. Does this sound like a problem you guys have encountered before?
Came here to say THIS. The music away from otherwise great instruction instead of adding to it. What the heck were they thinking? "Well, we already paid for all of these music tracks, might as well dub this one over the QB mechanics video..."
how would i go about improving my arm strength so that i can throw the ball farther that, my footwork and reading defenses seem to be the only thing keeping me from becoming a complete QB
Hey. I'm 16 and the 2nd quarterback for my high school varsity team. It's off season right now, I throw better than average (hints why I'm a quarterback). But sometimes when I release, it feels like I don't have control of the ball on the release and the ball doesn't go where I intend. Any tips on keeping consistency? Thank you
Coach, I emailed your website a question that I had about one of your DVDs but I never got a reply. They must have thought my question was a joke, which I hope is not the case when someone is looking to buy from your site. The question I have is, I'm wondering which training DVD would suit me best, here is my situation: I started an indoor flag football team. I play QB and I have to scramble and throw on the run a lot. What DVD would help me the most? If you reply thanks!
It would be difficult for me to tell what is causing that without seeing video of your throwing motion. You are welcome to email us some video. You can contact us via our website.
Hi, We recently started playing footballin our town, outside U.S. and We kind of lack of good throwing mechanics and don`t know kind of basics about throwing mechanics step draws and everything, I want to improve my QB play, i am 6,9feet, big hand, athletic, do you know of good videos or articles that provide informations about improvings this skills through some drills? I am tired of those 2 minutes videos from "expert village" and everything, Tnx for answer
When I throw the ball I get a great spiral, but the ball often rotates about 30 degrees on a lateral plane while traveling to the intended target. In every other fashion the ball travels as it should, but usually the tip of the football starts out slightly to the left of the receiver and ends up pointing slightly to his right. What could be causing this?
I'm sending this to Blake Bortles

Very good video for mechanics coach.
1st sentence is gold
First of all you want to make sure you are not over-gripping the football or using a "death grip" as Coach Cunerty mentions. You don't have to grip the ball as tightly as you might think in order to throw it properly. Also, take something off of your throws. Don't try and throw the football too hard. how would i go about improving my arm strength so that i can throw the ball farther that, my footwork and reading defenses seem to be the only thing keeping me from becoming a complete QB
Thank you
Hey man I saw this comment and wanna help you out, I play QB at beloit college. Email me at erickmitchell12@gmail.com
This is chaos
Good information. I wish he would have explained how a launcher QB throws the ball.
Tim Tebow needs to watch this video
thanks this was very helpful
what’s the 1 or 2 things that happening causing the ball to wiggle ?
This was a great video!
Hello,
I can throw tight spirals but I can only throw for 45 yards, how can I get more distance on my passes
1:49 oh thats a constant for me
what were the 2 things that makes young Qb wobble the ball ?
Awesome video
Shouldnt the elbow be higher than the shoulder through the throw?
It would be difficult for me to tell what is causing that without seeing video of your throwing motion. You are welcome to email us some video. You can contact us via our website.
someone show this video to Tim Tebow please! Vince Young needs this too
Thank you VERY much coach, I appreciate it... (;
Hi, We recently started playing footballin our town, outside U.S. and We kind of lack of good throwing mechanics and don`t know kind of basics about throwing mechanics step draws and everything, I want to improve my QB play, i am 6,9feet, big hand, athletic, do you know of good videos or articles that provide informations about improvings this skills through some drills? I am tired of those 2 minutes videos from "expert village" and everything, Tnx for answer
Is it unusual to develop pain in your throwing arm bicep if you're throwing fast balls? Like around the 5th ball?
When I throw the ball I get a great spiral, but the ball often rotates about 30 degrees on a lateral plane while traveling to the intended target. In every other fashion the ball travels as it should, but usually the tip of the football starts out slightly to the left of the receiver and ends up pointing slightly to his right. What could be causing this?
