First, count the number of safeties at the the third level (1 or 2). Then, as coach indicated, find which side the strong safety is on. He will be on the strength side of your offensive formation. Look to see if you have an over or under front. Read the alignment of the corners. Are they head up with eyes on the receiver (man) or are they looking at you in the backfield (zone). If you have a man in motion on the play, if a defender moves with him, that's an indication of man coverage as well. Keep in mind, if you have man coverage check for a blitz as most defenses will have some type of stunt when in man coverage.

The best confidence booster there is for a QB is knowledge! Learn your coverages inside and out! If you know exactly what the secondary is doing you will know where to throw the football. Young QB's often don't put enough emphasis on learning coverages. That will be your best asset for sure!
