so, so beautiful! i could almost feel the ocean breeze. i find when other artists use gouache their landscapes look like a comic. (i don't know how to explain better...) and you say you hardly use gouache...and then the result is so beautiful and realistic with depth! thank you for sharing again
Wow this paiting is amazing! Especially when you started with the blue on the toned paper, the contrast was so striking. You should do more gouache, you are very talented with it!! Lovely lovely piece of art, thank you for this video!
😍😍 Beautiful! You matched the colours and the values so well, well done. Plus, you took a beautiful photo. I am inspired to use my gouache paints more often. Thanks, Helen!
I’m so glad that your channel showed up on my feed a few weeks ago. I just love your artwork and how you mix other media with watercolors at times. This painting is just perfect- I just love it. Sending greeting from across the pond (North Carolina)
My Stillman and Birn Nova beige sketchbook arrived yesterday so I'm itching to try painting on it. I haven't tried toned paper before but I really like what Sarah Burns does in her Nova sketchbooks. She doesn't add colored pencil to her gouache paintings but I like the extra texture you get on yours so I'm probably going to try the pencils too. I've just realized I lean towards being a mixed media artist, I don't think any painting I've done has been just gouache or just watercolor. There's always markers, ink, colored pencils or something else in there too. I loved your results today. A nice chilled out video just when I needed it 😃
I have one on the way, and I'm really excited!! I think for me, it's a case of not being skilled enough to do the details in paint - it just seems easier to finish off with mixed media! Plus I love all my mixed media! I hope you're OK!
@@helencryer I'm fine, just a little stressed cos hubby will be made redundant in two weeks. We've known since before Christmas but it's getting real now 😄
I wish I could paint that fast in real life! I tend to find that if I work on anything for much longer than an hour or so, I get bored and lose interest, and I don't like going back to the same painting, so I try to find techniques and styles that are relatively quick.
Such a relaxing, informative and fun video. Delayed me cooking dinner!! I’ve used watercolours and coloured pencils for years, but relatively new to gwash (that’s how I pronounce it and I’m UK too) so I took out the yearly Sarah Burns gouache subscription which hubby kindly gifted me as an early birthday pressie! There will be a fan brush in there somewhere along the line, and can’t wait to try it with Sarah’s tutorial and also the in the way you used it. Came out marvellous, Helen! Sarah’s favourite sketchbook for gouache is the Stillman & Birn Nova, so I’ve also bought that, along with a very expensive 16oz tub of Dorland’s Wax, specifically for gouache. I’m excited to learn this new medium. So appreciate this wonderful video… you have a new subscriber and I’ll be binge watching your backlist while having notifications for new videos! 😂👏💛
Wonderful to see gouache on toned paper, I use this for oil pastels all the time and love the contribution that the color of the paper gives. I recently discovered that Strathmore has a heavier version of this paper called 'Toned mixed media pads, acid free and 184lbx (300gsm). I can't wait to try it as I am working toward learning abstraction and mixed media seems to be more congenial for that. This paper comes in Tan, Blue and Grey. Thanks again for such a nice demo.
Ooo - I've never used my oil pastels with it! I've just taken delivery of two heavier weight toned sketch books, but will tuck that away for future reference, thanks!
I really enjoyed this,the clouds,the flowers,the cliffs,the building,was great seeing it all come together,just wow,you really are an amazing artist…….but,ohh nooo,now I have to get me some gouache 😂😂
Thanks! If you have watercolours, and want to just try out gouache, you can buy white gouache and mix it with watercolours, for mid to light colours. It works really well, and would at least give you a taster.
Well done!. Love how the sea turned out. Also, the shadows on the grassy cliffs. Thanks so much for sharing your techniques and the close ups at the end. I find it very helpful as I learn.
That’s so beautiful. More power to you. Snd your voice is soothing. I’d love to do landscapes like yours. I e travelled to Ireland and would definitely try to paint my photos.
Your painting turned out really lovely on this toned paper. I had recently seen Irene on INKworks UA-cam and she also was using toned paper but hers was from Rembrandt. Didn’t know they offered it so I bought the blue and green. Heavy duty 👍 120 lbs. Colored pencils look great on it but I definitely want to try my Holbein gouache on it. I might finally paint with it 😂. ❤ your videos 😊
Wow! I don’t know if this is the “right way” to use gouache, either, but it is certainly effective. The amount of depth you got from adding the colored pencils is amazing, too. Very inspiring. I really only ever use my gouache dry, as something like opaque watercolor, since I’m just not terribly confident using it straight from the tube. James Gurney also supplements his gouache paintings with, at times, colored pencil or a hard pastel, to lighten areas or enhance detail.
Very nice! Strathmore's toned mixed media paper is quite nice to work with since it's 300 g/m rather than the 118 g/m of the toned sketch paper. I hope you like your sketchbooks! I love using gouache in my beige Stillman and Birns. It's one of my favorite sketchbooks.
Love the whole piece, but i really enjoyed seeing you create the flowery field in the front and using mixed media on the ocean! I have a couple of different Stillman & BIrn tan sketchbooks for gouache, I think their paper is a bit heavier than the Strathmore toned tan.
Lovely Helen ❤ - gouache is really pleasing to use - just not sure of the ‘fixing’ as I don’t like to frame behind glass. I tried carefully putting a layer of golden gel medium over the top and it seems to have worked ok. I used a varnish once, unfortunately on a painting I actually liked, and my painting very weirdly ‘clouded over’ 😢
Hi Helen, lovely painting! I have the same sketch book and wondered how well it would hold up to the gouache. Can I just ask what speed you set it up for the video. Thankyou for sharing, take care xx
With regards to opacity, there's so much variation in opacity of different colours within the same brand, and so much variation between different quality brands, that comparing different mediums is tricky! Good quality opaque colours, are all very opaque across gouache, acrylic or oil. They do feel different to me - oil is more slippery and blendy, and you're not working against the clock to blend, gouache is the other end of the spectrum, being kind of chalky in some ways (though obviously with the right amount of water still goes on like a dream), and acrylic feels somewhere in the middle. I'm pretty inexperienced across all these mediums though - only a handful of paintings done with each, so I'm probably not the best person to ask!
@@LucysArtNSoul @helencryer I was only saying it in jest. Although I must confess that people really do sound like they are saying go wash and goo ash 😂.

The speed varies slightly from segment to segment, but on average about x8.

It’s go wash or goo ash 😂.
I'm afraid I learnt to pronounce it from Americans! I have to pronounce it 'gwosh' now, because otherwise my book 'Oh My Gouache' doesn't make sense!
It’s pronounced both ways, in the UK the vowels are longer than in the U.S. which is why we pronounce it “GOU-Wash” and in the U.K. It’s “GEW-Ash” 😊
