This is a pivot in the right direction Nat Geo. Thank you for bringing this story to light...I love the nature films you all have done over the years but something like this....this story is needed.
This was hard to watch. I cried and felt sick to my stomach. My heart is so broken for indigenous people. What happened to them is horrible and there are no words. I had to stop the film a few times and go back and watch more. I'm glad this is all coming out and it needs to. I hope that people can talk about it and begin to heal. I wish I could hug each of these people and tell them that I see them, I hear them, I am broken for them and I'm so glad they are still here. They are so strong and survivors. I hope these people get the justice they deserve.
My Great Grandmother on my mother's side was born at Akwesasne in 1898, that's known as St. Regis to the Catholics, and when I was growing up, until I was about 12-13 my mother, who was a devout Catholic and then born-again Christian, never mentioned our heritage, EVER. My Grandmother was also a very devout Catholic. It wasn't until my Uncle was over and we watched Dances With Wolves that my Uncle started talking about our heritage, something I knew next to nothing about. It's been thanks to films like this, and Elders like Tom Porter who have been getting out more and more over the last few years. People don't understand, Canada has what's known as the Indian Act, and until 1980, Indigenous people were not allowed to talk about their own heritage, under threat of arrest. Indigenous people for years, had to get travel permits to go from one part of Canada to another. Hundreds and thousands of years of history, and only in 1980, was the Indian Act relaxed enough (it's never been fully repealed) to allow Indigenous people to tell their stories and even teachings to their own let alone anyone else. The world needs to know the truth about what was done.
I spoke to a First Nations woman about her experience in residential schools. She said it was fine but i feel deep sadness from her. She's 80 and all alone away from family. Maybe she didn't trust me with her story because my ancestors were colonizers. She is a healer and has impeccable intuition. She texted me today and said who is suffering? She said " I didn't sleep well last night someone is not sleeping" I was once shocked because my husband got bad news from the doctor yesterday. She said someone has been tapping on her shoulder. I am so blessed to have met her. She says I'm the same I'm not sure about that but I'm sure about her. I love her. My heartbreaks to think of her being taken away from her family 75 years ago.
I have long felt that Native Americans have been treated more horridly than we knew. I am grateful to know more truth about the people that we have pushed aside (to put it kindly) for so very long.
It is december 9th. This aired on tv where I live today. As I am writing this, I still have tears in my eyes of the pain and suffering they had to endure. A trauma for generations. It hurts my soul deeply, to get to know about this pain that they had to go through and still are searching ways to heal from it all. I was not there, it did not happen to me. But my heart is in pain. May there one day be peace in the soul for those who suffered and for those still suffering. I dont know what else to say, it was very hard to watch. 😭

Maybe it's because those people are mature and know that catholic is Christian and it's a religion not a cult. They not bigoted nor ignorant to ask a reasonable question, did the actions of the guilty conform with the beliefs of the group in question, the obvious answer is no. Judging an entire group of people by the actions of a few, who broke the laws of that group is just ludicrous and reveals ones prejudice.
