Guns would only be a possible issue, runs the risk of someone cracking under the isolation and killing themselves or others, or someone could use the weapons in a moment of rage and break something important or murder someone. No one expected spider-slugs, so in the mind of the people running this mission guns where going to be no help and a possible issue on a mission that couldn't afford them.
