I hate Instagram with a passion because of the toll it took on my mental health. I quit for good over a year ago, but I missed the artists' community. I recommend Discord for getting to know artists one-on-one and for sharing advice/learning new things. I enjoy the very small communities that are built around a common interest, like a fandom or a certain type of art.
Amen girl! Nothing is more important than your health. You are very right that there are MANY other ways to interact with the art community, so finding a way that's healthier for us and meets our needs is the way to go :)
I have an Instagram, but I use it mainly for fun and to interact with friends, family, other artists, and look at funny videos. I tried to use it as my art portfolio, but having to be active on it constantly and consistently having to post something tired me out. I still like to share my art there, but I don't stress myself out putting all of my energy and time into it! These days, I post there only when I'm in the mood. Haha! 😆
I don't quite love instagram but I do like to have fun using it. I do put some time into posting and interact on it, but I don't kill myself by keep posting stuff on there everyday. I use to take it more serious but it got frustrating trying to keep marketing myself be cause instagram asks for too many things. I'm in a strange gray area.
I don’t mind Instagram even if I don’t participate like I should. But I think the reels are a big distraction and antithetical to what we do, because the medium is kinetic by nature while our job is still images. Sure, you can mess with the medium, or turn the pages of a book, and we have to accept reality, but I have been avoiding them because it’s just one more thing I have to learn how to do and they aren’t the best method of showing single illustrations. Come to think of it, I avoided all IG for most of the year partly for this reason. But now I think I need to tackle the challenge head on.
I'm publishing a new video today talking about this! The best new way to display static images are carousels, and reels are great for showing WIP shots. The thing with reels is, they allow us to work with the algorithm instead of against it. In my view, it's not "just one more thing we have to learn", but the priority. Even if we have to ditch EVERYTHING else we're doing on social media and just do reels instead. It's our ticket to spending less time on Instagram and get better results :)
I know many of us get a strong gut reaction of "ewwww!" to reels 😂 However, reels a just what you make of them! Don't like dancing, silly lip-synching, or showing your face? That's fine! You don't have to do what everyone else does for reels if that sounds dumb to you (honestly, it sounds dumb to me too!) But as an artist, you're more creative than that! You have 1-2 minutes of video to do whatever feels comfortable, creative or fun to YOU. In my next video I'm giving some examples, so check that out! And of course, if that's still not where you want to spend your time, then you can use the lazy Instagram strategy :)
All have the potential of working well, it really depends what suits you and the amount of work put in. But regardless of the platform, social media is only PART of a healthy career strategy and should never be the ONLY way you get work.
So, before i pivoted to kids books I actually used to draw NSFW stuff. Got to around 8k followers before I got bored of drawing the same thing. Having way more fun with kids stuff even if my followers are in the single digits on twitter and barely breaking 100 on IG. Plus, I can actually add kids stuff to my portfolio. I have to keep the adult stuff completely separate for different clients
Hi Ness, I really like your content, it's very useful. Thanks for share all this content. :D I have used instagram for many years, and I still have a small account. This year I got my first book deal so I have not been active on my account due the work, it has been difficult to post something new. At the beginning I felt very stressed beacuse I was not posting anything, but then I realized it was more important to finish this project and post when I can, and get my own website (this is very important to be found by art directors.). Despite I wasn't posting anything on IG, I got more attention on twitter thorough the different hashtags events, like portfolio day or Kidlitartpostcard. My twitter account grew a little bit more. Probably to have a more active strategy would be better for Instagram, but I still don't feel so much attracted to this sotial network, I really don't like to make reels. But at the moment, this is the better option to grow an account on Instagram. :') This is my IG account: instagram.com/mariadrawss_/
So true that's the thing!! When we get lots of work, we don't have time to post on Instagram! But if we have so much work already, why are we even posting on Instagram? 😂 Sometimes, it feels like we're guilted into doing it... Like failing off from posting regularly is somehow a sign of failure. I'm happy to hear you've found out what works best for you!
@@ArtBusinesswithNess Yeah!! totally agree, I felt guilty for not posting anything on IG. _ Anyway, I'll try to revive my Instagram account, in the end social networks are important for our work. :') By the way, Behance is also a good platform to get projects, even if you have a small account. ;)
Do you have an Instagram account? Share your link so we can go check you out!
Yes! @danydisign
I'm also a bit sick of Instagram, so I think I will try Etsy in the coming months.

It can be fun indeed, when we don't get caught up in it and take it too seriously! Your approach is healthy!

Oooohhhh!!!! Upgradesssss ❤❤❤😍😍😍😂😂😂
RIIIGHHTT??? I'm so glad you share my excitement haha!
I like the lazy Instagram strategy.
So do I!
I finally quit instagram last week after four years of grind. It’s so freeing. 😎
It will leave you lots of time to grow your career in other ways!
Y’all listen to Ness on this topic! Passive ways to earn professional opportunities will never be as effective as active strategies. Right??
You know it! Passive methods can round out our strategy, but should never be the WHOLE strategy :)
I've watched 2 videos and do not see video descriptions to download your featured item.
You can get that free guide here: www.artbusinesswithness.com/findclients
Also reels are so bad.

What would you say is the best platform/way to get your work out there?

I don't care about instgram anymore, I like to build a community there with other artists but I'm not trying to push my content like before.
Instagram can be a bit much (or a LOT) so I don't blame you!

Yeah those definitely don't mix!
I make so much shit it wouldn’t make sense for me not to post😮
There you go!

@@pinkstarknight Yes! Less saturated, more specific to artists, so it's easier to get started there!
