    This may have been covered under passion or discipline, or believing in yourself, I think resilience/persistence is important. My goal is to like my own photos more, and share them, I’m not a professional but photography is an important part of the way I express myself. By really looking at artists (photographers, painters, musicians, poets) I admire, I realized how prolific they are, and that I really do need to produce an enormous volume of work to get better, both technically, and to make images people connect with. I’ve found that printing and sharing photos with friends is way more satisfying and impactful than social media, and having a personal website is also really worthwhile. Great video as always, thank you! 📸

    I’ve had a camera since 1965 and have shot many pro shoots, have taught many people and love photography. Everytime I get talked into a job (I don’t need the $$) it feels like a job and I don’t enjoy it. On the other hand I don’t like shooting for free as it hurts working photographers. I have started shooting birds and I’m hooked!

    Your comment about the Brownie camera hit home as I started out when a family friend gave me my first camera at the age of 8. I didn't get real serious about photography, though, until 50 years later. Little did I know that one year after I bought my first DSLR (Canon T3i) in 2014, that an image that I shot has generated over $8,000 in print sales and continues to be my best-selling image! I agree that a photographer has to have that passion, patience and discipline.

    Once again I find myself utilizing your UA-cam to help get beyond just considering getting back into photography. I put photography on the back burner in the late 80s. I’ve only recently used photography for function, but occasionally re-discover how excited I can get over just a simple composition. I’m a Kodachrome has been who had a popular exhibit called “Scum of the Earth” (shots of beautifully presented pond scum). I could have used a drone back then! Now retired, I have more time and resources to devote to all things and perhaps I can make magic happen one more time. Thanks Chelsea and Tony!

    Don't be surprised at how man young people are watching your channel. I think it is great that teens are getting into photography, even film, and putting out great works. I am enjoying watching the channels of those in their teens and twenties (I am in my 70s) they are showing the passion and exploration that photographers have. I have learned from them on doing digital work, my weakness. I think one important thing is to shot, all the time, every where and any time of day or night. Digital is cheap. Experiment. Enjoy the art form.

    Hey Chelsea, Just got done watching this video I guess I have low self-esteem I'm from a film camera background. Started watching my dad in the darkroom develop 9photos. My job was loading the 4x5 film into the holders. Then mom gave me her brownie to take photos, then dad said let us take black n white and develop them. Then I got the bug I was around 13 I can't remember exactly. Then dad let me use his 4x5 press camera then think I was in 9th or 10th grade. Mom Dad bought me a 35mm Fujica ST-801, Oh my loved my new camera everyone in the neighborhood hid from me. I was the neighborhood guy with the camera. I got involved with the High school Newspaper. I had so much fun doing my thing in the darkroom running around the school with my camera. On my first newspaper day, my photos won from all of northeast Ohio division. 3 sets of my photos won best feature photo. They lost my photos so I don't know what photos won I submitted about 25 photos. Now from the department store in Cleveland. Called Scholastic arts 2 of my 3 photos won a prize one was honorable mention. One photo went to NY I won a gold Key. My slide got damaged during the showing. Then the mall that I worked at had an art showing I had two of my favorite photos mounted they were stolen. The only photos there I guess that should have been a clue. My first job was selling cameras, calculators I enjoyed my job so much I sold more cameras than anyone in the company. I loved my job so much the best perk was I was able to buy camera equipment at cost.
    That is how I fell in love with Canon cameras lenses etc. Don't Laugh I'm using a Canon D300 8 MP, it's about 18 years old I think, I need a new camera. Covid hit so now I'm waiting on their new cameras, I love the R5 it's a bit pricy for me, I'm retired now watch I will end up with the R5. I like Wildlife and Bird photography. One more thing about me, I rollerskate a pro approached me to take lessons. I spend a fortune on skates wheels, In two years my first competition I was sick I came in 10 out of 32. I kept on trying really hard there was a completion local I entered was for the state of Ohio, I can in 3rd place. two weeks later I fell fractured my arm in 5 places. Forgot one thing on Newspaper day I got expelled from the photography class for correcting the professor. The discussion was bounce photography with a manual flash. His math was all wrong mine was correct. I was told I was not welcome in his class. that is me if it's not correct I will correct you. (smile) sorry for writing a book.

    In almost every self-employed industry you have to be great at both hard skills and soft skills to be successful. You can be an amazing photographer, carpenter, tiler, baker,... but still not be successful if you don't have the soft skills to back it up. You have to be a great businessman / woman as well besides owning your craft. Analyse your market, see the potential of resources and marketing, develop yourself as a salesperson, the list goes on... It sure ain't easy to be jack of all traits but you'll notice many successful people you look up to are one. And they usually work very hard to get there.

    As a viewer, vertical format drives me up the wall. I have a hard time believing that people are "adapting" their videos into vertical format because that's what the *viewers* want. It's probably a coincidence of tiktok becoming popular and just happens to give their users no choice but to use it vertically. UA-cam should give shorts a horizontal option in my opinion.
    Disclaimer: Yes, I am a "boomer" (aka Millennial) who refuses to use tiktok.

    • @AbdonPhirathon
      @AbdonPhirathon 3 роки тому +1

      I used to think like you. The mere thought of vertical videos drove me insane. The thing is, formats change and evolve, and one’s personal notions of what a format should be can hinder one’s growth.
      There’s an Army saying that goes like this: Adapt and Overcome. I try to apply this concept to everything I do.

    • @ProcrastinatorsAnon
      @ProcrastinatorsAnon 3 роки тому

      @@AbdonPhirathon I understand what you're saying, especially in regards to content creators. But Tony assuming the viewer prospective when they're not given a choice is illogical to me.
      If viewers are migrating to tiktok, is it really the vertical aspect specifically that attracts them? Or is it the short form? Or something else...No one knows (including me) because platforms are just copying each other...

    You don’t have to be discontent due to ambition: you could just love being creative which could require a lot of practice to actualize the creativity. But yeah, some days are drudgery.

  • @spidersj12
    @spidersj12 3 роки тому

    I think ambition is the linchpin of all the traits you mentioned. Try and name a hyper successful captain of industry, film, Wall Street, the news media, photography, scientific research, etc., that wasn't ambitious. Talent, vision, drive to improve your skills, they are super important as well. With regards to ambition, I mean the drive to push yourself for notoriety, the drive to climb the corporate ladder, the drive to achiever higher status or more responsibility. Perfectionists, when not taken to extremes have a drive to always improve their work, but the ambition to use that perfectionism to achiever more notoriety, more fame, more success in life might not translate. What if you simply are always trying to do better, not for anyone else's approval but simply because you know you can make it better, do better the next time? Some people want to live an anonymous life, so being "successful" in terms of notoriety and acknowledgement from their peers in whatever profession, might not drive them at all. If you're trying to sell your work, you need that desire for acknowledgement from strangers, that desire for popularity, to be able to sell your work, or even to succeed at job interviews, getting new clients, getting more work, charging more for your work over time. Those that don't care about anyone's opinion and simply try and achieve excellence for its own reward, knowing that this moment, you achieved something amazing, then trying to top yourself... perhaps that's enough? However, that kind of person might not be a commercial or professional success.

    Really enjoyed this video (frankly: much more so than the "which camera is better" ones ;-) ). I would add one trait, namely "resilience", which is partly covered by patience and discipline. But to me it adds the aspect of going on despite getting negative feedback or not the attention one wants. For a hobbyist it is also understanding if you want to go for likes/popularity, or do things that are close to your own heart, but maybe appeal only to a minority. Of course, if one wants to make a living from photography, that is obviously not an option. Anyway: lots of food for thought; thank you for it!

    I've only been taking pictures somewhat seriously for a few years. One thing I notice is that so-called pro photographers seem to be confused by pretty basic things. For instance, do you know what exposure compensation does in aperture priority mode? What about manual mode? I've literally seen these things completely stump photographers who have been in the game for years and beyond.

    Talent is misunderstood by many. Talent isn't something that anyone "just has". No one is born with much talent. Talent is something that one develops. People work hard to develop and expand their talent. You can't really ask, "what's more important, talent, or hard work?", because talent and hard work go hand in hand. One requires the other. There is no talent unless one has worked hard to develop it.

    Great great podcast. I’m photographing for 2yrs now and i know i’m not the next big talent. But I just love it sooooo much. I wake up with it and I go to sleep with it. I am a bussiness owner and I need to put my time in it but every day I’m searching for that bit off time where I just can grab my camera. I really love the documenting style. But I don’t think I’m there yet, first I want to shoot everything and keep on trying and growing. But when I get the time in I know that one day I will make a documenting series. And i hope I can give it depth and value not just some good shots. There is sooo much to tell in this world and we people need this to get back in touch with the basics off life cause I feel whe have become to “complicated” as humans. So my photography is not there for a while but surely for my whole life and I hope that one day I will become so good that I can make my job from it. Thx for this podcast, really enjoyed it!

Maier worked mostly as a nanny for rich people. I think it is important, especially in our culture and era, to articulate the concept that "being successful" at something is not to be conflated with pecuniary gain at the something.

    Thanks a lot for yet another insightful discussion. Perhaps it would have been even better with a definition of "successful photographer". For the vast majority of photographers, success will obviously be very different from the traditional measures of success that tend to be more relevant to professional photographers. For some photographers success is to be left alone and achieve pretty much nothing that the rest of the world would usually consider relevant.

Dont think that you are above keeping a keen awareness of your revenues, and not confusing gross sales with your income, the need for keeping on top of bill collections, your costs and expenses and watching out for over spending.

    I am concerned that Canon, Nikon, Sony (etc..) are trying to sell new innovative feature laden DSLR (mirrorless) cameras and lenses to a dwindling market. It's like anglers fishing in a lake that is evaporating and shrinking in a heatwave and half the fish have already died or developed legs and walked onto dry land.

    The two I think that are the most important are talent and personality. Talent is a given, and is still very important, but I think PERSONALITY is also important. If your known as being an @$$hole by the community (fellow photographers and models or clients) then this will hurt you more and at that point, talent will mean less to them simply because while you may be a good photographer (from a skill standpoint) you may be a PITA to work with, and they either find someone else whose personality is more welcoming. I know a few people in my photography groups who are very talented, but also assholes at the same time, clocky and flat out rude I've heard models/talent talk about how they won't work with some photographers simply because of how they interact with people (not necesasrily them, but others as well). So personality and talent are important and I would say in some respects are "equal" qualities that someone should possess that I think people forget. I think some of these "cocky" photographers think that people will work with them because they're so good (talent-wise) and that's not really the case many times.

    I am a born again christian. I am the only family member that didnt end up in the ministry. I went from architecture to photography for my career. I had no support outside of my wife. My work still gets ignored from family except when they want family portraits of cheep wedding photography.

    Talent Isn't Enough (traits of successful photographers)...
    ive been using dumb luck, coupled with ill-planning, and thats the reason im the successful ten thousandaire i am today.
    kidding, this was great message for anyone perusing excellence in their life. remember kids, your not too old too start now!
    as a side note, im still looking for that 1st camera. not looking for a get by model, instead one that has a bit more than what i need. ive watched too damn many videos on the matter and have only succeeded in confusing myself even more.
    heres a short list of what i want...
    1. great color
    2. whitest whites and blackest blacks, i guess thats called dynamic range
    3. ease of use, as much as possible. would be nice but not critical
    4. my goal is to shoot landscapes, architecture and close-up texture references
    5. my starting budget is a thousand, or there abouts
    6. would like a lens system where i dont need to sell body parts in order to afford a good lens if possible in the beginning.
    any help is greatly appreciated.

    Talent 1: Have parents who are well connected.
