This shows how Canon listens to their customers! No other company has offered firmware improvements like Canon has. When you buy a camera from other companies, you are usually stuck with the features until a new camera is released. If you bought an R5 last year wanting dual recording, well, it didn't have it and you knew that so only your fault. Anything after after a camera is released is only a bonus (Canon NEVER said it would offer dual recording, EVER, yet they are giving it via firmware after only 1 year. Impressive).

Sony has been pushing it’s marketing big time with their embassadors & sponsored shows. As far as focus tracking & sensors tech, it seems like they are leading the way. Nikon waited way to long to up their game in mirrorless & video. If they can up their focus tracking game at decent price range they have a chance. The smartest thing they did with mirrorless was the larger diameter lens mount. Nikon also need s to up their marketing if they really want to stay in the game. Hopefully they will come out with something special like the D500 & D850 we’re when they released. We the consumer need the competition in camera business.

"I don't have to wait for the next firmware update" yeah thanks god you don't need that with canon or you'll probably change your camera first considering they're doing a firmware update once every couple of years at best..
I'm shooting canon, I love my 1DXII, I plan to buy the R5 or R3 depending on the specs, I LOVE the glasses they have, but honestly I'm rooting for sony because thanks to sony canon has to get out of their comfort zone, stop dumbing down their gear like they always do, and actually update their firmwares once in a while because it starts showing that they don't have any follow through on their released gear when you see what sony does..

It annoyed me how every point Chelsea made about the Sony (minus the menus which are terrible.) isn’t applicable to today. The a9 tracks and shoots amazingly through updates. On top of that the buffer isn’t a problem as absolutely nobody is holding the shutter down for a minute straight, where that would then become an issue.

And bcos of that, I managed to resell my canon gear at good price. Thank u- Canon. LOL). The main reason is I donnot like the way Canon treat customers. They were sleeping with their victory, they treat customer like a fool. They were too stuborn and conservative. Only when Sony joins the race, we start seeing Canon wake up. As the result, now both Canon and Sony users are enjoying new tech. Now I'm happy with Sony A7iii, A1. One day I may switch back to Canon if they serve my need. So customer is No1.

Omg Chelsea’s comments are the best part of these videos! She really pulls the daggers out 😆 “how do you enjoy using your Sony phone?” ROFL.
I confess I converted from Sony A7RIV and several GM lenses to Canon R5 and their L glass and yeahhhh Canon has it figured out. Canon is an imaging company; Sony is an electronics company. You can see right there in that simple statement where they put their priorities. I switched to canon because I saw the writing on the wall when Sony only makes f/1.2 GM glass as a direct response to hemorrhaging users to Canon due to a lack of good glass. Sony was forced to open up lens manufacturing on their mount because they cannot compete with Canons lens innovation. They can only dump all of their money into sensors and processors and hope that it is enough to compete.
But anybody that has been in a photography business very long knows that when you buy a camera, you are not really buying the camera. You are buying into the lens system. Because that is where most of the money goes. I couldn’t stay with the company that pins their hopes on Sigma continuing to bail out their substandard glass.
I respect Tony for providing so many positive points to Sony, and realize that he has to remain impartial so that you guys don’t alienate part of your subscriber base. It’s OK Tony, we know you secretly like Canon more as well. 🤣

    • @chongyulius
      @chongyulius 3 роки тому +1

I agree that when you buy a camera, you re actually choosing a lens system - given when their body performs similarity, or without a major gap between them. But when Canon decided to keep their 1080p in 5D for almost 10 years in a row without changing much, and the only time when they decided to stuff 4K in their camera body was 2 years after Sony pushed out a7R2 and they still manage to fock up that feature by recording XXL extra large uncompressed footage files, you know lens won’t save you. I’m glad they are back in the ring again, but they were seriously knocked out for a good 4-5 years in the game.

    • @trekkeruss
      @trekkeruss 2 роки тому +1

What evidence is there that Sony was "hemorrhaging users to Canon due to a lack of good glass?" How could Sony have been losing customers while simultaneously gaining market share? What evidence is there that Sony was "forced to open up lens manufacturing on their mount because they cannot compete with Canons lens innovation?" You say, " I couldn’t stay with the company that pins their hopes on Sigma continuing to bail out their substandard glass." Who is saying Sony glass is substandard? I have not read that anywhere, and when I look at objective lens tests from various sources, Sony glass tests as well as competing glass.
I am not knocking Canon; they make good/great products. But it seems to me you are making up stuff in your head in order to justify your decision to switch.

I shoot predominantly Canon, and apart from the investment that I have in all that gear, I much prefer the Canon interface over Sony's - I find it a nightmare of disjointed menus. That said, I went to Sony for the camera I carry when I want just one smaller 'one-camera-does-it-all' and found it in the Sony RX-10MkIV bridge camera. The optics are brilliant and so is the sensor and processing: however, I found the interface clumsy and the ability to customize buttons limited. Still, reverting to basic controls, it does a better job at its role than the equivalent Canon superzoom bridge cameras such as the PowerShot G3X.
I originally purchased that, but was frustrated by the lack of a built-in EVF and the add-on unit was clunky, fragile and expensive. The Sony integrated EVF left it for dead.
I also have a couple of Nikon cameras that I really like using - and I observe that Nikon are hitting a sweet spot with the introduction of their retro-style Nikon Zfc model - although I have hopes they will create a FF version, a wish that I observe has been frequently expressed by others.

I agree with this. As a currnet Sony a7s III shooter, Sony does improve the ergonomics and menu system with each camera system and I like that. I used to shoot with Canon a few years ago, so I love both companies and not biased towards one. When I do hold a Canon R5 or R6, it does feel really great in the hands, I love the image reproduction on the rear display more, and I do like that you can touch to change your settings and scroll through video. If Sony can improve these things, I feel like it can help them that much more. If Canon can fix a few issues, like custom settings for video, overheating, & etc, it will with them that much more. All and all, both manufactures are doing a good job so far and I'm excited with future iterations of their cameras.

I and my buddy are photo enthusiast (not pros). He's been a Canon shooter from the beginning. Has 3 or 4 bodies and many lenses, flashes, triggers. A few years back he's taking a trip with his family to California/Yosemite. 3 days before the trip he asked my opinion about a compact camera for his wife. I showed him a couple videos on UA-cam for A6000, He ordered a 2nd hand one that night for $500. Guess what, for the whole trip the Canons came out of the luggage once. 90% of the photos taken were on the Sony A6000. He and his wife actually fought over for using that camera. To this day, he uses the Sony over 99% of the time. Even for occasional pay gigs when he hauls out his Canon gears, the Sony is always in his pocket. Fact is most people don't need full frame with 30+ mps. If you can't take great pictures with 24mp APSC, the limitation is you, not the gear.

This is a very interesting debate, thank you for posting a video about it. I’ve had thoughts about switching to Canon here & there, but I’ve always loved Sony product. I was actually visiting Japan and ran into a who worked for Sony at a coffee shop. He wasn’t too high up on the ladder, but he wasn’t a low-level employee either. He told me there will be some amazing features coming out in the next couple years. He wouldn’t get too specific, of course, but he had that look in his eye like he dying to give a secrete away! Lol.
Anyways, one thing worth mentioning is that when you are shooting in “HI+” drive mode with the A7III (not sure about the other models) the motion tracking and autofocus freeze in their position (lock) and don’t re-autofocus for a moving subject. If you switch the drive mode to “HI” it will continue to autofocus as the subject moves. So, the whole thing “10fps” is kind of pointless unless you are using it on still objects, and as Chelsea said, that’s pointless. Please correct me if I’m wrong on this or maybe one of the updates has fixed it. I actually turn of the auto-image review so I can shoot faster, but the screen blackout and not being able to change settings in the most irritating thing. If Sony fixed those three things I wouldn’t have much to complain about.
I always appreciate your content, it’s legit and very informative! I haven’t found any other channels out there like you two! Thank you, keep them coming, please!

Screw Canon, I think it was 2012 when my friend bought the just released Olympus OMD EM5, at the time I was using a Nikon D80. my friend let me borrow his new em5 for a day. and I was blown away by it. I thought it was the future of cameras, and it made my D80 feel like a dinosaur. I could not believe that I could see my exposure while I adjusted my settings. and I loved the touch screen and touch focus and shoot feature. and I instantly thought that this camera was the future. I didn't even know at the time that it was mirrorless. and at that time I wanted to go full frame. but there was no mirrorless full frame. and I was intimidated by the Nikon D800 36mp. so I bought a Canon 5Dlll. but even on the day I bought the camera, I felt like I was buying old technology. so I became someone who started praising mirrorless before any other person was doing it. hoping that Canon or Nikon was going to come out with a mirrorless full frame camera like the Olympus em5. but it was Sony who came out with it. but the performance wasn't great. so I waited and waited and waited for Canon and Nikon to come out with one. and it never happened. when the 5D4 came out I refused to buy it because I new my next camera had to be mirrorless. even tho countless people argued with me that DSLR's would always be King. including allot of youtube influencers. then finally when the Sony A7r lll came out I new it was time to get the camera that I always wanted when I bought the 5Dlll so many years earlier. and when I bought the A7r lll I was pissed off at Canon and Nikon for making me move to Sony because they denied that mirrorless technology was better for so many years. so I hate Canon and Nikon for that. as far as I am concerned they don't deserve my business. Sony innovated and gave me what I wanted while Nikon and Canon denied mirrorless. so FU to Canon and Nikon. and Canon and Nikon still won't give 3rd party lens manufacturers the formula for there glass. so all third party glass has to be reverse engineered. but Sony works with 3rd party manufacturers witch is why there are so many affordable lens options from Samyang, Tamron and Sigma for Sony cameras. Canon also intentionally cripples their gear to protect the other lineups. so screw Canon. and as far as Canon glass goes. the 28/70 f2 I would never buy it because its huge and heavy. I would much rather have some small and light f1.8 primes. and their 50 f1.2 is allot bigger and heavier then Sony's GM f1.2. and Canons 85 f1.2 is a huge and heavy monster. so Canon might make some really nice glass. but I don't want big and heavy monster glass. I love glass like the Sony 35/55/85/135 f1.8. the only new lens I like of Canons is the small 70/200 L. the other glass you can keep. I'm not interested. so to sum it up. just because Canon is catching up, doesn't mean they deserve my business. they forced me to switch brands. so why should i give them my business again.

I speak as one who uses cameras from every company. I've never felt that Canon cameras were all that great, but they will remain for a long time simply because they are huge and have a ton of money. Their big forte is reliability and simplicity of use. IQ is mostly middle of the road and when they have really good lenses, they are costly, heavy, and big. They made two excellent moves that has kept people coming back for more: EOS and dual pixel. The main reason I wont buy too many of their products is because they change systems whenever they want and offer very little backward compatibility. 1959-R mount, 1964-FL mount, 1971-FD mount, 1987-EF mount, 2003-EF-s mount, 2012-EF-M mount, 2018-EOS-R mount. So a consumer is forced to dump everything and start over a lot. Great way to make a lot of money!

Nikon can deal with third place. They are downsizing the company to be back in profit (because they know they can't compete with such a massive company as Sony and all the money they can put into image marketing, here on UA-cam, other socialmedia and reviews). And that is the best move, because the market will continue to shrink.
I'm not worried at all, about Nikon. Let's hope we can talk about the big three in the future.
Nikon never was even close as big as Canon, Sony, Olymus, Panasonic and other companies (in total). It's all about staying in profit, not about market share. You can have 90% market share, but if you don't make money you will go bankrupt, while the small company with only 10% makes money and stays in business.
Japanese business-thinking works different. It isn't all about growth. It's simple about making money. And if you have to shrink to make money, they won't hesitate to do so (as we see).
So they will be a happy third place and continue to sell us great cameras with superb glass.
That is my humble opinion to the last question in this video.

When Sony had everything to gain and nothing to lose they risked a lot. Now that they have a large portion of the mirrorless market they're being a lot more conservative with their new tech and interestingly enough Canon is being more risky.
As for the comments in this thread about Sony listening... have you tried to use their interface? I had a Sony RX100 and was blown away by the tech that was in it. It was far superior to the Canon that I had previously and yet... I never enjoyed using it. I was extremely impressed and at the same time disappointed in how inconsistent and unintuitive it was. DPreview talked about how bad the interface was. Then the RX100 II came out and the reviews said "The interface is still the same, we wish they'd address it". Then the RX100 III came out and the reviews said "They haven't changed the interface". They don't even bother mentioning how bad it is now, it's just part of using a Sony. I'd never read a manual to any Canon I ever owned nor did I need to. The manual for the RX100 was the first one that I ever read from cover to cover. Sony didn't listen for the 2nd gen, or the third, or the fourth or the... Sony doesn't listen.
I decided then that I'd rather have a Canon or Fuji that was a generation or two behind Sony than have a Sony. I'd rather love using my camera than have the latest tech.
The new Canon is an interesting beast though - they completely closed the autofocus gap with Sony in a matter of years. They released an 8K camera in a normal body (and unfortunately didn't over engineer it), they're bringing out autofocus that follows your eye and global shutters. Canon is the new Sony and Sony is the old Canon. Let's hope that Canon doesn't forget why people use Canons - they're enjoyable (except for the auto white balance snafu which used to be super easy on a Canon but is a mess now).

For decades I always had whatever was the current Olympus flagship camera (usually more than one body) and its top of the line lenses from fisheye to 300mm. When the consumer camera division was spun off, that was a sign that the brand would begin to decline. I sold off all my Olympus gear (there were three bodies and eight top of the line lenses) and went back to Canon (once having been an F-1 system owner). The replacement was Canon's EOS R5 and five of its top-of-the-line lenses. The only things I miss are Olympus's light weight and drop-dead build quality (though Canon's build is fine, too).

I like the Lumix S1 for the money (and the S5 looks good). I need pro functionality but don't have the pro budget because I am an artist first and foremost. Canon was too expensive for full frame and same for the Sony a7siii. I had to make the jump from a 5DMKII and the S1 hit all my needs better than other cameras in that price range. I got a used a7sii but it felt like a toy and was beat up far beyond description so I returned it and got the S1. 96MP option makes it fantastic for photography and the 10bit video option is great for cinematography. Ergonomics matched my 5D perfectly and menus are better. Basically it has a Sony a7iii sensor in a canon 5D like body with a nice screen and features. The only weakness was autofocus but I solved that with a gimbal/ follow focus setup. I would have stayed Canon if my budget allowed it but I like performance for the dollar more than brand names. I enjoy the discussion but don't agree with the conclusion for my (fairly niche) use case.

You folks miss a key point - the most innovative camera isn't necessarily the best choice for every photographer. If you are heavily invested in Nikon glass should you switch to Canon because they have cameras with superior autofocus? Perhaps it would be better to wait and see how well the Z9 performs which will incorporate real time tracking and AI. Personally, my D850 is very adequate for most of my needs with the possible exception of BIF.
Chelsea, please get up early in the morning and go photograph some 4 legged creatures with that f/11. It's very useful for BIF, but is not fast enough to produce high grade images in shade during the early morning hours. In this situation I’m pressed for adequate light using with my 500 mm f/5.6. I don't want to see someone who has a limited budget purchase this lens and be disappointed.

That's not what's usually meant by vertical integration. The movie set thing, maybe. But vertical integration would be Sony owning raw materials producers, suppliers of parts for their camera, the cameras themselves, distribution, and retailers like Best Buy (including I suppose supply to movie sets). What you called vertical integration, would generally be considered horizontal.

Nikon user. Every time I use a Canon, I go in with an open mind. But they just disappoint me at every turn.
    1. The position and angle of the two control dials just seems terribly unergonomic
    2. Likewise, the on off switch just seems to be in such a bad position
    3. After I take a photo with a Nikon, I can zoom in immediately. With Canon, I have to stop, go into the play menu and open the photo again, and only then can I zoom.
    4. Canons just seem to be loading and buffering all the time. Take a few consecutive shots and the whole camera locks up. With Nikon, you always remain in control 100% of the time. It’s immediately responsive.
There are many other subtle things like this, but Canon just seems to have so many things that make a bad user experience, things that aren’t mentioned in specs or reviews.

If this holds true one might expect either Canon or Sony to pull ahead of the other in market share, at least according to how historical share is divvied.
