Another 'discriminator' network tries to tell if the images are real (from the training images) or fake (made by the generator). after lots and lots of training, the generator network is able to make arrangements of pixels that fool the discriminator. This video was probably made by slowly changing the input to the generator so that it's output slowly changed, covering a range of possible faces that the generator could draw. It looks like the training data were group photos or something.

In video games, programmers and artists have explicitly built a 3D model of something, and a mathematical procedure for displaying it. In neural networks, nobody explicitly programs the rules for drawing a face. The network is like clay that can be moulded into almost any program by applying many tiny changes over time. The network is slightly adjusted every time it makes pixels that don't look like a face. Over many iterations, the program eventually "discovers" a continuum of features that can be combined to make a huge variety of faces, even ones that were never shown to it.
