I would say you understand that most of us learn by mastering one specific task at a time. I watched once through, then fired up Studio and replayed the video in steps as I learned speed ramping. I estimate you shortened my DaVinci learning curve by 50%. Well done!

Great overview - thank you! I have an additional question, however: if I want to slow down a clip that is already placed in my overall timeline, it overwrites the clip after it. Is there a way to have the clips to stay intact and just be pushed? (hope it makes sense what I'm trying to say)

Damn it.. I would have needed this tutorial yesterday but all my Google searches were about speed change, smooth speed change, acceleration or smooth acceleration, never had the idea of using the term "speed ramp". All searches gave me non-related content. In the "More options" section please add tags with alternative wordings to your videos, you'll reach more people.

You're my new friend. 😂 Incredible teaching style. So often, I'm afraid to click on a tutorial that's more than 6 minutes long. Any longer than that and I'm usually presented with lots of impractical jabber about the location, or the trip, or the taste of the food that's being used as examples. I hope you recognize how cool it is that you DON'T do that. No fluff. Just facts. So...how do I invest in your course?

Since you asked, the 'Speedwarp' option for 'Motion Estimation', is not available in the free version of DaVinci Resolve. I chose the 'Enhanced Better' option and it looks al lot better already.

  • @_Oregon_Sunday_Drives_360

I reference this video often and I just realized it is missing "Speed Ramp - Up From 0%" and "Speed Ramp - Down to 0%".
I am trying to figure out how to use these two options between speed points.
Seems like it should be the intuitive method, but instead, choosing either option affects the entire clip (not just between two speed points) and any/all of the clip's prior speed points are replaced.
What I am trying to do is have a (lengthy) clip start with "up from 0%" to the first speed point, then do whatever want with additional speed points as you have shown in your video, then end after the last speed point by using "Down to 0%". I can achieve this by cutting a clip into three segments, but it seems like it should all be available within a single. Any ideas? do you already have a video about this?
    Thank you.
(BTW, I have Studio, so that is not the issue).

    • @AlexCameron-Depiqd

Great question, Adam, but sadly there is not. It's odd as whilst the Retime frame is useful it's a lot less useful than retime speed in this instance.

HELP! I have cut short clips in a bit, I want: each clip start at normal speed, in the middle of the clip it decreases to slow (20%) and then towards the end of the clip it goes up to 100% speed. OR: each clip starts fast at 150% speed, in the middle of the clip it decreases to slow (20%) and then towards the end of the clip it rises to the initial speed, or speedup. Is that possible, without changing the LENGTH of the clip? Is possible create some presset for that?

    QUESTIONS:
I discovered that with linked clips - can't set a speed point which spans several clips and adjust speed that way. Apparently need to do each clip separately.
Also is there a way to go faster than 800% ?

  • @Alitaf97

Hi, I have a question if you don't mind asking, I'm retiming a clip but the audio gets super weird and I know you can fix that by turning off pitch correction, however I can't seem to find a way to do that for retimed clips without changing the entire clip and resetting the retiming. Is it possible to remove pitch correction for individual sections of a retimed clip?
My solution so far has just been cutting the clip into smaller sections and slowing them down, but then you can't speed ramp smoothly

Is there any way to retain clip length by automatically slowing down the rest of the clip which you don't speed up? I feel like I'm losing my fucking mind with this software. Essentially if I have a 10s clip, I want to speed some parts up while the parts which are not sped up are automatically slowed down in order to keep the original length and footage length.

Thanks for your input. I appreciate my videos can come out a little on the long side. Something I’m aware of and certainly not trying to make them longer than they need to be just for the sake of UA-cam. There’s certainly a little fun stuff and housekeeping around the main content but I also think that if you’re a total beginner then this concept needs more depth to understand each aspect fully. Appreciate you watching and feeding back. I’d imagine you’re a fairly experienced editor?
