I have both a Sub date and the Omega Seamaster 300M Black dial. I have been wanting a Rolex Submariner for 30 years and finally pulled the trigger. I am not disappointed, but I think I built up the Sub to a much higher expectation than it deserves. Now having owned the Omega for 6 months and the Sub for about 6 weeks, I feel like they both are very different watches yet designed for the same thing. I have always liked the sub and the fact that it has stayed true to its original design. It is smaller, lighter, and thinner than I expected. I was expecting to put on a tank watch and honestly it feels a bit dainty compared to the solid feel of the Omega Seamaster. I will say, I love the sub with the oyster bracelet. That makes the watch, yet it does scratch way too easy vs the Omega. I purchased the SMP on a bracelet and then bought the rubber strap. The SMP bracelet is very sturdy, but a bit outdated for me. Much like the jubilee bracelet. In fact, if the sub came with a jubilee, like the GMT, I would not have liked it. It would takeaway from the tool/masculine sport look. The sub on a rubber strap looks ridiculous with the block case. The SMP on the rubber strap looks and feels incredible. A truly cool tool/masculine dress up or down sport watch. Bottom line, I have always wanted both and now I have both. I will say if I could do it all over again, I would just purchase the SMP and I would be happy for the next 20 years. The positive is you don't lose money on a Rolex. I never plan on selling my SMP, but may move on my Sub to try the Rolex Explorer II 2021 version and the GMT Batman someday (oyster bracelet). . Pound for pound the SMP holds its' own and has a lot more technology and features. AR coating is a big difference. It makes the wave dial look awesome and very visible. The non-cyclops date at the bottom almost unnoticed allows for better symmetry. The accuracy on both of my watches is +1 seconds so that is the same. The Omega can be worn as a daily and it looks great. Rolex you have to baby it or it will scratch and look worn quickly. The co-axial has a much longer service length and it is only $500 to service an Omega vs $1100 for a Rolex after 5-7 years. I love all of these comparisons, but I will say I get many more compliments on my Omega. True watch enthusiasts seem to know Omega while everyone else wonders if your Rolex is real. The Rolex mainstream branding is a blessing and a curse. I love them both and thankful I get to enjoy both. Thanks for the review

Thanks for articulating all of that. I'll probably never get a Rolex but the Omega is in my comfort range. I know they asked the question, price aside, which do you like better, but...I think it's almost impossible to not put into the mix. I like the Omega better but if you gave me one for free I'd take the Rolex. (Who doesn't want a Rolex?) Easy to go for the prestige if I'm not paying for it. But...for my hard earned money I feel like there is better "value" in the Omega. Now the question is' SMP in black or Aqua Tera in green?

Welcome in club of huge expectations and small tiny watch delivered by rolex. My story is Omega Speedmaster or Rolex Daytona I was in love with speedmaster racing white dial and visited shop 3 times before pulling the trigger then I was thinking maybe I'm doing huge mistake and better is to wait one day for Rolex Daytona so I just looked around for newest replica of Daytona within few hours I found guy which offered it and 300 USD later I returned to home with perfect Daytona replica on the sport oyesterflex strap and standard bracelet in the box kind of try before buy I wanted feel rolex for few days and my first day was awesome but this watch over time everyday looks smaller and smaller dial boring white, time hard to read bracelet girlish mixed feeling with rolex something like a huge potential but something wrong till I gave my rolex to my wife to try and on petite wrist it looks perfect I was right it was watch styled for woman wrist. Now I have Omega Speedmaster Racing on my wrist and everyday I like it more.

Omega Seamaster Pro 300m was my first luxury watch, which I had bought back in 2013 (the previous model). However, I was always itching to own a Rolex, so ended up buying the beautiful Submariner Hulk back in 2014. I was extremely lucky that it was available at a Rolex store! I had worn them both on a regular basis back then. However, the price of the Submariner Hulk on the second hand market had inflated so much that I was afraid to wear it too often. It's my subconcious mind that keeps telling me don't lose it, don't scratch it, careful when swinging my arm around objects etc! So apart from my Apple watch, the Seamaster is what I normally wear on most days. The Rolex will be worn on special occasions. I can wear the Seamaster without worrying that I'll get mugged, but I cannot say the same thing when wearing the Submariner Hulk. Having said that, without thinking about the brand, or price of the two watches, I really like looking at my Seamaster Pro more. The anti-reflective coating on the Seamaster just makes the dial stand out beautifully. I have also grown to really like the bracelet on the Seamaster and prefer this over the tapered bracelet on the Submariner. Any fans of the two watches will just need to save up and own both.

Let's be honest. Objectively and rationally (spec-wise) the SMP exceeds the Submariner in almost every category. However, Omega still lacks as far as brand reputation/image goes. That said: If you really hunger for the Sub - one of the ultimate watch icons of all time - you'll be advised to get the Submariner. Because the SMP will never grant you an equal level of satisfaction. If you are tired of the Rolex Hype and waiting list drama, then get a SMP.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with Omega locking system. I've had one soon 15yrs with no surprices. Also the bezel feel gets smoother after using it for awhile. Had my watch serviced some time ago which restored the coarseness/stiffness but slowly and surely it is getting smoother again. This is not to say I would not like to have also the submariner, but I chose to buy one proper watch for the rest of my life. I kinda like it that it's sort of blue collar version of proper watch, rolex name does seem to attract wrong kind of attention at times whereas normal people dont even notice Omega watch.

The accuracy of the SMPc is incredible. Over the 2 years of ownership it has held time within +2 sec a date the entire time without adjustment. I love the hertitage of the movement and hope Omega has found the "final form" of the SMPc so the design is only tweaked in the future similar to the Sub. The price of the SPMc, regardless of losing money on it, is unbeatable for value of the item you get. The SMPc doesn't fit under all cuffs, unfortunately, and sticks out. I suspect the Sub does and that's the Sub's only plus in my mind.

There is just much more to take in with this Omega. That awesome ceramic dial, domed crystal, much bolder bezel numerals, nice beveling on the case. A watch with a simple movement needs to make up for it with an interesting design. I think that’s why the Daytona is so popular. I love both watches, but there are a couple things that make the Omega the better choice for me.
    1. The second hand tip on the Submariner is a clear metal which makes it harder to see vs the red tip of the Omega. I can find the tip of the hand faster and can follow it better especially in bright light outside. I also like the color of the red tip as it enhances the watches look
    2. The minute hand on the Rolex is a clear metal color again which is harder to see in bright light. The white tip on the Omega makes it easier to see.
    3. I like the bezel on the Omega has the markers all the way around while the Rolex stops at 15. It looks odd that the markers on the bezel stop on the Rolex though it does give it a cleaner look. Most sport watches however have the markers all the way around the down which makes it more symmetrical.
    4. You can just about buy 2 Omega Seamaster's for the price of one Rolex Submariner.
    5. Purchasing a Rolex has a very long waiting period of a year or more while the Omega is available in their stores.
    6. You can see the movement on the back of the Omega while you cant with the Rolex.

New Rolex, but looks exactly the same as the previous version. Omega just has more character to me.

Yep - buying a Rolex means having a watch nearly identical to the one from 40 years ago. For something that acts as jewelry I'm not OK with that.

    Hi Tim,
I have also feel my 124060 new bracelet feels a little flimsy and lighter if you compare to the 114060 (owned it also).
Is this to complement heavier/bigger head, thus more material on the head?
    Dunno.....
Kinda miss solid feel of the 114060 bracelet.

How much heavier could the case be? It's only 0.7mm wider than the previous version.

This omega is sporty, less a dressy diver. The seamaster professional 2500 in ceramic was a bargin that could compete.
I would say the omega liquidmetal planet ocean 2500, the limited edition is the best diver I have ever worn.

I’d say the Omega is more dressy actually. It may. It’s curves and design add a touch of flair and elegance to a semi formal / smart casual look. I think the Rolex is also very dressy of course, but doesn’t add as much flair to your style. It’s more of a straightforward option

@@TheSuaveEntrepreneur this is what annoyed me about the new smp300m.
The last ceramic smp filled the dressy diver category, all it needed was to bring back the sword hands, put in the new movement and modernise the bracelet.
The old 2500 PO was the tool watch.
Both watches have moved toward the same category, a little flashy without being a dressy diver or a tool watch outright.
The new smp moves up in size, has bright white numbers on the bezel and shouts with the waves on glossy ceramic. I take you point about about lines, but its just too big.
The could take the 40mm spot that rolex has left behind.

@@Jay-xr3sb I love the new design. I think the previous one was a tad muted in color and visibility.
What I think omega should do, instead of pumping out new designs and editions, is release a only a few color variations of each model, but in all different sizes. 36mm-43mm. That would make sales a lot higher and models a lot more special, in my opinion, what do you think?

@@TheSuaveEntrepreneur each to his own. It depends on what role the watch fits for you.
It just seems to be a jumbled mess now.
For divers they have released a number of POs in different sizes. 39.5mm, 42mm, 43mm and 45mm. Usually too thick or the proportions are knocked out at 36-39.5mm.
Even rolex can't stop fiddling, they finally tried trimmed lugs but the expanded the bracelet to split the different, and made the clasp too big and the bracelet now of a lower quality.
The old 42mm po with shorter lugs and 1mm thinner or the old subs but upgraded with modern tech would suit me fine (just like the explorer 1 update).
I honesty thing I could do the job!

Rolex goes up in price every year and the styles never change. I bought my wife a SS/18k Lady Datejust in 1990 and she has worn it daily since then. I bought my first Rolex in 1976 and I also have Rolexes that I bought in the early 1980s and 1990s that are still in excellent working and physical condition. There are few things l like better than checking the prices of new Rolexes and remembering what I paid for mine when I bought them decades ago. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe I paid $435.00 for a new SS Datejust in 1976. Today a SS Datejust will cost you over $7000.00...

I worked at a AD back in the early 90's and we sold the Sub no date for I think it was 2200.00 USD. With my discount I gave 1640.00 for one. We always had them in the case.

Really surprised it seems you’re not familiar with Metas certification process, you’d then know that from simply time keeping they’d be almost identical, but then you’d know everywhere else the omega movement is far more stringent in time keeping, robust nature and anti magnetism. You then also get the exact results of your watch from its metas certification and can print out the certificate. Owning both these exact watches my omega is actually a better time keeper. It’s truly any amazing, brutal and time consuming testing process that’s why no one else really bothers with it, but the results are very noticeable

Would love a clasp with no dive extension as standard, not an extra purchase. And would prefer a solid casback, which would mean a thinner profile
