FYI "Ginger Nuts" are a type of hard biscuit (cookie) making it ideal to dunk in tea (or coffee) to soften it. I'm *SURE* he wasn't using another double entendre.
Useful information for a joke by the great comedian, Gary Delaney. "As kids we used to enjoy dipping ginger nuts into a steaming hot cup of tea. Of course, these days days they'd call that bullying."
Tim Minchin is an absolute genius, most of his songs have an element of misdirection to them, His song “thank you god” is an absolute must hear and shows just how brilliant his song writing really is. But others like “the pope song” and “storm” are also absolutely genius.
He only went into comedy as a way to fund becoming a composer, which he has done with resounding success. He's written many Broadway musicals, he played Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar and wrote all the score to Matilda. And that's just the short list!
Tim Minchin is my favorite performer hands down. He is an extremely skilled pianist (self taught), his work is witty and hilarious and is grounded in some very deep philosophy/science.
My favorite thing about this song is that everyone pre-judges the topic of the song, thereby reinforcing the point of prejudice and judging people based on external appearances.
Surely you’re not suggesting that anyone would have thought of a word other than “Ginger” when he listed the letters, “a couple of Gs, an R and an E, an I and an N”! 🤪
And wrote the musicals Matilda and Groudhog Day (Award winners). His origin story is documented on film by a friend when he was going to give it one last year to 'make it'. An exceptional Talent
@@chrisallen3388 the fact we can watch the moment TIM makes it big- He’s in a basement room with another act on before him. 2 guys in capes- and only capes, and somehow they made their tools into an act? It’s classic
Thank you for taking it as meant, most Aussies can relate to the shite we dumped on red-heads when we were growing up, much more than we can relate to the shite that happens in the U.S.A. If you have a child, or know someone who has, then "Lullaby" is a song that hits the mark pretty hard. Basically anything he sings is great, even when not comedy, such as "White Wine In The Sun" (a lovely song about Christmas in Summer in Australia)
Red haired here, well was until grey kicked in. And curley red hair - I copped heaps of names lol, even “my hair was red because my brains were rusted” lol
are you kidding... she was clearly offended... she even stopped the video at 4:50 to presumably skim the video to make sure that "the word that must not be named" is referenced tastefully enough for her taste.
when I saw that speech I went down a huge Minchin rabbit hole. He’s a truly talented person in a multitude of ways, from comedy, music, commentary, to Tony winning plays
Tim was a huge inspiration to Bo Burnham. He once said "basically he does what I do but 100 times better". But recently, especially after the "Inside" comedy special Tim has said that Bo has outgrown him. Tim now writes more musicals and TV shows. Mathilda is getting great reviews as well as Groundhog Day. And his TV series "Upright" is absolutely amazing and I recommend it to everyone
agreed, especially with the animated video.. but if we're talking beat poems, i think Mitsubishi Colt might be better.. or just poems, Angry [Feet], is worthy of discussion
Tim drops a couple of lines to direct you back to what the message is really about: when he says "Ginger" with a hard "g" and when he refers to a Ninja to bring the word cadence back to you. Clever stuff
Welcome to the world of Minchin, not the best version but ok. Many comedic songs, love songs, beat poems, he has written and performed in musical theatre, Matilda, Groundhog Day, Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar, he has written and starred in a tv series, Upright, the man is a genius.
To make this slightly more clear, he wrote the songs for the Matilda and Groundhog Day musicals. He played the part of Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. Not that the original comment was super unclear, but I could see people getting muddled up and thought it might help some people to clarify.
Comedy music is a whole genre and it spans from classical to rock to hip hop. Some of my favorites (other than Tim Minchin)… Tom Lehrer, Anna Russell, Peter Schickele, Reggie Watts, and the most famous of the lot… Weird Al. I think it’s really important to acknowledge that they are all incredible musicians first.
when i first saw the video a few years ago i knew straight away as i noticed his hair ,then i knew what names are going to be added specially when the minge came out you not noticed it as there is some words you not have in the u.s but yes it is a gag.
The most impressive thing is this is actually Tim at his worst. He is legit an incredible musician and a fantastic singer. Some performances he puts less into and relies more on the comedy, but catch the right performance (such as the "So" Live performance in Australia and he'll blow you away. The guy's a genius and probably the best out there at musical comedy.
I was there the night this was recorded it was the weekend of the Royal wedding (William and Catherine) so everyone was in an odd mood and why he called us commoners but was a great night
Tim is an underrated comedy genius. It wouldn't be exaggerating to say he's Australia's answer to Lin-Manuel Miranda, considering his own off Broadway chops.
In my old hometown there were 2 brothers who really got a constant pissling simply because they were redheads. Oddly enough this came from most of the Caucasian kids and I couldn't understand it at all, one day when the mob of little horrors had finished with one of them I went in and cleaned him up and helped him home and the whole way he was asking me why this kept happening....I had no answers for him because I had no idea where this stuff came from. Many years later he returned after serving in the military for some years and systematically went around and beat the living tar out of his tormentors which the local Police politely ignored, funny that. What goes round, eh?
Tim is extremely talented. he performed on West End, which is Australia's version of Broadway.. including the role of Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. then had a couple solo comedy music albums/tours.. After which he wrote the songs for Matilda the musical.. this show was after that.
Tim is awesome and incredibly talented. I truly appreciate him making a point about word reclamation and prejudice saying something less serious and yet clearly making a serious point about a whole other form of prejudice. The misdirection at the beginning is key to keeping the focus on the unsaid and how the truths are the same. I do find it discomforting that this particular song is always in the recommendations for reaction on channels of reactors that are members of minorities. I really wish more people recommended his song Not Perfect because that is my personal favorite.
I like the way that the joke plays out to people's inherent prejudice... You think it's going one way when in actual fact it goes completely another. Always fun to watch people react to this. (OK OK it's going that way is it?.......Takes a U-turn.... Phew! wasn't what I was expecting.) Clever stuff.
One of the best comedy sub-genres: going down a road where you can sense the audience nervously thinking "where is this going?" and then switch it and make a bigger a point. See also Stewart Lee.
Oh yes, musical comedy is a thing and has been around for a very long time. I'm more of a Bill Bailey fan but I am also a redhead. Yes, we cop those names and worse @ school. Quite a few other issue surrounding being a redhead also exist.
I love when people think they know what the word is, only to discover it's not. Nope lot of people discriminated against in their own way, not just any one group.
He tried to have a career as a traditional musician for years before turning to comedy and his musical talent is amazing. You should react to more of his songs.
There's another (older) performance of this song where it's just Tim and a grand piano. I think it has more punch, intimacy and better sound: ua-cam.com/video/KVN_0qvuhhw/v-deo.html
Yeah, I much prefer that performance, I've not seen this version before, but the audio is poorly recorded, and his performance isn't as good here with the orchestra either I don't think.
Lmao I've seen a few African American people responding to this song. As it's building, every single one has this look on their face that says "is this mother fucker about to do what I think he is?" 😂😂😂 Tim Minchin is amazing.
If great music mixed with comedy is something you find interesting, check out another gifted Aussie musical group called Axis of Awesome and their song Four Chord Song. Extremely clever absolutely hilarious. And 100% truth.
He starts this show by saying that an orchestra kills the comedy but having an orchestra playing while he calls the pope a MFer is kind of funny. That being said I prefer the versions of this with just him and the piano
If you want to see his thought-provoking comedy without music, look for his "Confirmation Bias" clip. If you want to see his music without the comedy, look for his Jesus Christ Superstar videos. It's like he can do no wrong.
There is a much better version of Tim's performance this bit solo w/o the back musicals at a smaller venue worth seeing for yourself. I hope you found his solo preform-ace of this bit, I really found it better. Also you might find "Storm" and/or "If I didn't have you" interesting.
FYI "Ginger Nuts" are a type of hard biscuit (cookie) making it ideal to dunk in tea (or coffee) to soften it.

Both kinds of ginger nuts are delicious ngl

My wife and I were lucky enough to travel from Canada down to NYC for 3 days specifically to catch Minchin live! It was everything you wanted and more
the orchestra really gets in the way of the comedy in this performance, his solo version is soooo much better!
My Favourite Tim Minchin song , "Not Perfect" . Matter of fact , I'm gonna watch it again right after this.
AEROPLANE
Play Not Perfect followed by White Wine in the Sun, sure to get ya boy teary eyed. No doubt.
I have that song on my "Work" playlist "

Not Perfect has been running through my brain for YEARS...along with fkn Tony the fkn Fish!

Tim Minchin gave a speech for a college graduation that was SO good.

I love the song because he never really stopped talking about the first word that came to your head, he just kept it going with comedy.
