Am new here. And the metropole orkest does all sorts of amazing things like this. They can play anything, and they are so good at it. Have seen them perform over 40 times.
That guitar is his signature Roland GR300 (I believe) guitar synthesizer. He has stuck with that particular sound ever since he introduced it (I think even on this particular track). Not many people use this particular guitar synth anymore so his guitar tech has a bit of a hard time keeping it in top shape. The sound indeed resembles that it a trumpet. Besides using this synth he has also used a guitar controller hooked up to the massive Synclavier digital work station, playing all kinds of sound and textures. His Secret Story album started out as him and his Synclavier system and then he took the parts he wrote and recorded on them and had them arranged for orchestra and added additional musicians. Metheny has always been at the forefront of using technology especially when working with his Pat Metheny Group. That was actually the raison d’etre of that band.
Loved your video, Charlie. I’ve had that same reaction to PM for almost 50 years!💗 If you really want mind-bending, go to The Way Up album. How Pat envisioned that 45-minute orchestral jazz piece I can’t begin to imagine. PM just functions on a different level than us mere humans 😂 Would love to see your reaction to that!
Most guitarists would give an eye to have a truly unique, individually identifiable sound and style…Metheny has two! This is one of them, using a late 70’s style guitar synthesizer. He’s one of the few guitarists who could make that work…those early guitar synths didn’t track well, but Metheny’s style is so precise that he sounds wonderful on it! His first musical inspiration was trumpet, as his father and older brother played, so he brewed up this sound. His other distinctive tone is his clean, reverb and delay drenched jazz tone…instantly recognizable. 😎🎸👍
Charlie, I'm so glad you're delving into Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays' music. Thanks for reacting to Are You Going With Me. There are so many more gems to listen and enjoy from the group. May I recommend you react to a couple of their most outstanding creations - Minuano (Six-Eight), and James. Cheers!
No, to answer your question; Pat is playing his own sound that (on this set) is with and Orchestra. Many years ago Pat set up the Roland G3 though a Synclavier, and created this trumpet-esque sound that has become one of his signature sounds. He uses this setup on several of his tunes. Check out Half-life of Absolution, Song for Bilbao, and Story from a Stranger, among dozens of other tunes. You are right on with experiencing the brilliance of his music. It is a privileged and gift for us to enjoy! Keep on exploring the wide range of Pat's music, from gorgeous ballads to complex group interplay to avante guard craziness and the many settings he and Lyle Mays have done.
Ooh I love that you're getting into Metheny! Some older gems I think you'd appreciate are "Have you heard" and "Last Train Home". For the tear jerker, showcasing the wonderful harmonic meeting of minds between Pat and his keyboard player / co-writer Lyle Mays, definitely do a reaction of "Letter from Home". It's a short piece, but it will probably be etched into your memory forever after the first listen.
I've been blessed to see PM live about two-dozen times. Every time has been a treasure, but his times with the Group that I've seen him (from 1984-2005) were among the best concert experiences of my life. Charlie - you should check the live videos of him with vocalist Anna Maria Jopek.
You really should go listen to the original from the Offramp album. It’s more layered and building each time through the progression of the melody and then modulates on the 3rd time. He also kicks the guitar synth up an octave. It’s a great piece of music and gives you the basis to interpret the arrangement with the Metropole Orkestre.
I didn't know, but love it! "The Metropole Orkest (transl. Metropole Orchestra) is a jazz and pop orchestra based in the Netherlands, and is the largest full-time ensemble of its kind in the world. A hybrid orchestra, it combines jazz, big band and classical symphony orchestra styles."
Great music all around, love your reactions and your dedication to good music, I personally love the sax solo like you! A great artist to react to is Cody Fry's music video "Underground" (Live) - Cody Fry, Cory Wong & Metropole Orkest. One of the best combinations of pop and orchestra with strong vocals I have ever heard from a production in my life. I would recommend this with whole heart! I hope you enjoy it whether you react to it or not! (The cover "Elanor Rigby" is also a great one from Cody Fry)

"When we were free" from The Quartet album is my go to song.

Charlie, please react to 'To The End Of The World' by the Pat Metheny Group! The recording of them playing live in Japan is incredible.
👍 Agreed!

To witness excellence.

I always enjoy watching an artist like Metheny where you can see that love of playing in their face

Love that smooth orchestral jazz sound!
more metheny reactions please!

Wow. You must have had some amazing experiences, Jim.
Thanks for the suggestion 👌🏼
Pat's guitar sound originated back in 1981, with the Offramp album: played on a Roland GR-300, an analog guitar synthesizer.

You can never go wrong with Pat!

Yes they're an amazing orchestra. I know Jacob Collier loves them and has worked with them too
It's a midi guitar..he uses that sound quite a lot
Pat's solo sounded like an EVI an octave lower. Remember the EVI from Dynamo?
Imagine hearing that LIVE!!!

I believe that guitar sound is coming from a Synclavier. The guitar is a MIDI instrument.
To be 100% accurate, it's Synclavier samples.
@@peternicholas2393 Roland GR 303. Unique analog synth with guitar interface.

Probably the Roland GR systems of the day
Again, welcome to the heavenly "rabbit hole" that is Pat Metheny.
Why thank you. I'm rather enjoying myself 😏
Nice! I've been enjoying Pat Metheny for 40 years now. Definitely my favorite guitarist of all time. And thanks for another great video.
