What an amazing cut. This is Pat and Lyle’s tribute to the innovative jazz keyboardist Bill Evans, who influenced them both greatly. Evans died September 15, 1980… hence the name of this song. Pat and Lyle released the “As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls” album, which included this song, in 1981.
I remember the first time I heard this - on vinyl of course - many years ago. I was awestruck by its beauty and almost heartbreaking tone. Rick Beato, an authority on music if there ever was one, called ”September Fifteenth” the most beautiful song he knows.
I was fortunate enough to hear this live back in the early 2000s. Live, Pat and Lyle ended the cut on a single plucked guitar note. I can still remember that moment, the audience mesmerized in absolute silence and near total darkness, the only light softly shining in blues, purples and occasionally white on two masterful musicians, Pat’s plucking hand slowly rising high into the air. That single note rang out much more softly than even the sound of the building’s air handling system, and it slowly, tenderly, faded to silence.

PMG have a true understanding of musical Dynamics like no other artists. Yes especially in the live sense - I saw them together I think 4 times over a decade starting with First Circle. You can hear a pin drop in the audience when Pat is playing Acoustic guitar. For me, Lyle Mays is one of the best and he is the hero of this band ensemble. Ric Beato's story about seeing them in NY (where he was a Usher at the venue to get into the show) and the subsequent all nighter with his roommate and Lyle playing chess till the we hours. I can never get enough PMG. I am grateful to have an older brother turn me onto this music in the later 70's when I was just barely a teenager. The music was a bit advanced for me but I grew into it and it changed my life. I have to admit Pat is my all time favorite Guitarist next to Jimi Hendrix. I love every single story and insight regarding Pat and Lyle. Thank you for sharing

I can’t believe I’ve this album for over 40 years!
Metheny was an incredible bridge for me coming from Joni… and he took me through many phases as he, of course, went through them.
All of the great collabs he did, all of the dazzling musicians he invited to create music…. Just broadened my horizons and made me investigate older jazz artists.
Unfortunately only saw him once about 25 years ago… and I swear I hallucinated during that show, the music brought a deluge of images and color to me… and I wasn’t even doing drugs!
    Glad you loved this!

This entire album is a beauty… both Pat and Lyle shine, as well as the great Nana Vasconcelos in percussion and vocals, although he doesn’t participate in this specific track… Love your reaction…
And on a different note, I am 66, and it’s striking to see you both following a similar path of musical discovery, 40 years later… Nick was reacting yesterday to Arvo Pärt’s Fratres, today to this beauty, both pieces have accompanied me for 40 years or so…
And of course I also started with Yes and prog, Yes being my all time number one…
If you want an easy way to discover a magnificent musical world, listen to ANYTHING from the ECM label, that’s where Metheny, Corea, Keith. Jarrett, Pärt, Terje Rypdal (the greatest guitarist that you probably never heard of), Jan Garbarek (the greatest tenor sax player you probably never heard of) , and the list keeps going and going… 40 years ago when there was no UA-cam and no Internet, that was one way to find new music… ECM!
Y por supuesto, siendo de Buenos Aires, rock nacional!!!
    Love and peace
P.S.And if you have heard Terje Rypdal and Jan Garbarek, then you know what I am talking about! ❤

Thank you for sharing about this, I was thinking about the ECM label- in Ric Beato's interview PM mentioned the recording with ECM- that usually they did every thing in a live room all in one track, no over dubs or large production. ECM was like a Boutique label for the modern (contemporary) Jazz aficionado. There are no bad artists on ECM, actually all of them are Virtuosos! I feel kindred spirit in that I was pre teen hearing Art Rock (which was renamed into Prog) that started with Rush, then Yes and Genesis, Crimson, ELP et al thanks to my older Brother Joe. PMG came a few years later around 78 or so.
I mentioned in the comments above I saw the First Circle show in UT Austin in 86 and it changed my life about everything especially Music. I listen to PMG before I do my own solo music performance to get into a space of both quality and improv. I feel people that are into PM are very deep minded and heart centered who identify music on a different level than entertainment, I might even say spiritual.
I love that YT has a open forum to share our love and I so much enjoy seeing a younger generation discovering Music like PMG. I feel spoiled that heard them at such a young age then developed a relationship to the music and was able hear subsequent records coming out like: Still Life Talking, Letter From Home, Secret Story, We Live Here, Speaking of now etc. and then going to see the shows when the concerts came into ATX. I am so Grateful for this Music

@@cozmicpfunk I was able to see PM a few years ago here in my adopted hometown of Dallas, around the time of his Unity Band, it was absolutely fantastic! The interplay, the intensity, the sheer joy that they had on stage, at some point after playing 3 or 4 themes, Pat tells the audience “uh, I am supposed to tell you the names of the songs, but we’re having so much fun here that we rather play “… 😀
And I loved the Rick Beato interview, especially when PM says “well, compared to Bach, we all suck 😂”

This is one of my absolute favorite Metheny albums. I grew up close to Wichita and later lived around Pat's home in Kansas City. His music always takes me home - it conjures visions of the prairies for me, as crazy as that might sound.

      @oystertoadfish1149 4 місяці тому +2

Pat has mentioned many times about growing up in Lees Summit (Missoura) as he and we pronounce it in KC. Your visions of the prairie is not off the mark. He often talks about space and openness in his composing. Lyle was from Wisconsin…they met in Wichita! Gary Burton is from Indiana…Rodby and Wertico are from the Chicago area.
Pat’s midwestern upbringing and musical influences were all many of his first several albums and song titles.

good morning, This video showed up on my UA-cam menu this morning and I was drawn to listen to it again, I am feeling very heartbroken, I found out the other day that my neighbors beautiful dog Iggy was diagnosed with terminal cancer, we though he suffered a leg injury, she took him to the vet to have x-rays done and it turns out that he has bone cancer and it's really bad, I've been helping take care of the neighbor's dogs since day one of them getting their dogs ,they have 3 dogs, Iggy, Daisy and Blackie, Iggy is quickly getting worse, I found out yesterday that's she's helping Iggy over the rainbow bridge on Friday, my god I'm really going to miss that beautiful boy, I am so heartbroken, the love he gives is incredible, he captivated my heart the day I saw him, I let the dogs out to potty every day, God I am going to miss him, It's so incredible how a pet can have such an impact on your life, they make your life so much better, Give your pets an extra hug and kiss, God bless everyone, 💔

Wichita was my intro to Pat and Lyle. Heard a few tracks on a jazz station, immediately bought it, and it stayed on infinite loop. I'm only recently revisiting Pat's stuff from that era, and _woof_ . . it hits way harder now. I notice more, feel more, sense more, weep more.
I'm an entirely different person 4 decades later, after all. I recognize the musical stories being told because I've now lived them myself. It's a crazy beautiful thing . . like discovering a treasure for the first time, but twice ✨ Sep 15 especially wrecks me from the floor up. And only more so since learning it's for Bill Evans 😭

I have listened to this so many times over the decades and it still can bring me to tears - especially as I see your appropriate emotional reactions. I read that the closing piano solo section is completely improvised - Lyle Mays is not improving over a chord structure, but doing what he called "compositional improvisation" and in the session Pat was visually indicating to him to keep going farther with the ideas that draw on the various melodies that have come before, while Pat listened for the best time to come back in and close things out with that beautiful melody on the guitar.

My friends and I were all expecting something more like the Pat Metheny group and American Garage, and this was a total departure very cool. Glad you got a chance to get it into your life as soon as you can get the rest of the album in your sound stream. It's worth it. This Might be a good epic pic except that would leave the amazing Alexia out of the mix. Great reaction as always it’s a real empathetic beautiful and moving album altogether. It brings out lots of challenging emotions as was in evidence. ❤️❤️

I became an instant, lifelong Rush fan when a friend played 2112 for me in 1980. But I became a Pat Metheny fan in 1979 when PMG dropped their second album, American Garage. I was only 12 and had no idea who Pat was. My mom had exposed me mostly to the classic rock of the 60's and 70s, and also some jazzy stuff like George Benson. As a native Angeleno kid I listened to the local rock radio stations, KMET and KLOS. No Metheny there! But my mom acquired American Garage and played the hell out of it (thankfully!) I've seen Pat numerous times in concert over the decades, many of them with my mom.
I am a big fan of many guitarists such as Wes, Jim Hall, Mahavishnu, Allan Holdsworth, Strunz & Farah, Shawn Lane, Alex Lifeson, Vernon Reid, Randy Rhoads, SRV, EJ, Satch, Mike Stern, Steve Morse, John Pettrucci, Vai, Molly Tuttle, Tommy Emmanuel, Matteo Mancuso, Mateus Asato, Tosin Abasi...The list goes on.
But...Pat is my all time favorite guitarist. Hands down. As much as I love Allan Holdsworth and Mike Stern, it's still really not even close.
My mom passed away almost 5 years ago. But I'm forever grateful for the gift she gave me by relentlessly spinning American Garage on her turntable, 45 years ago. That opened the door for me to become a serious jazz fan by the time I started college. And it was not long before I discovered "As Falls Wichita...". That album and "New Chautauqua" especially captured my imagination early on and still move me deep inside to this day.
"September 15" is a perfect Metheny/Mays composition - as clear an expression of the magic between them as you'll ever hear. The intro is simple and spare but there's so much intricate movement with all the chord changes. And when they slip into the main theme in 6/8 it's light and joyous, like two best friends running together through a meadow of wildflowers in Spring. And look at the way Pat effortlessly slips back to single note improv as Lyle begins his solo. As for that solo...Lyle played the piano as if he was conducting an entire orchestra, revisiting thematic elements, layering in flowing chord structures, rising and cascading, breaking down to single piercing notes. That dude was otherworldly. Rick Beato has a 15 min YT video dedicated to this song, well worth the watch.
    Thanks for this great video.

Hey guys, I see you responded to my post. In keeping with Lyle and Pat, are you familiar with Noman's rare guitars? Saw a video recently where Norman found a street musician, an amazing guitar player that reminds me of Pat. An older gentleman playing in front of a restaurant with nobody paying attention. Norman invited him over to play in front of his shop.WOW! A friend of Norman's decided to give this guy( his name is Roberto Jimenez) a very expensive reissue of a 1952 Fender Telecaster ( my favorite guitar) hard to play but sounds amazing in the proper hands. Nick you could play a Telecaster. Anyway...this guy has never been recorded. You should check him out, maybe get some play on your channel. The channel is Norman's rare guitars. This particular thumb nail is gifting a guitar to Roberto at Norman's rare guitars. There are several videos. My fingers are tired, that's why I love guys!

Wichita Falls is a small town up in the flat and dry Texas Panhandle. This song was used in amazing early Kevin Costner move Fandango, during a wedding ceremony in a tiny west Texas town square. You should check THAT out.

Hi guys, the first time I heard this was at my first Pat Metheny concert in 1982. They also played As Falls Wichita... and I was overwhelmed by the amazing music in that show. The next year I was in the first row gazing at Lyle's piano keys almost every minute. I always thought this group to be The Lyle Mays Band.

    NicknLex,
Love your channel. I was just notified of your new PM & LM September 15th review and I immediately watched it. I don’t know if you read many of the comments you recieve, but in this case I thought I’d at least give it a shot as I am CERTAIN you’ll enjoy it.
I have told my wife that if I am lying in bed with only 8:14 left to live I’d not only like to spend it listening to this song, but the LIVE version I am providing a link to immediately below.
Not only do you get to watch Pat and Lyle perform it, but Lyles solo is expanded over the version you just reviewed.
Then, Rick Beato, (whose channel I can’t imagine you're not aware of), recently released a segment on his feelings for this tune. As usual, he goes into detail as to why. I am sure you’ll enjoy watching this as well.
Finally, I am attaching a link to another LIVE ballad of their’s which, (A Map of The World), if it’s not "as good” as September 15th, it’s a close second. I am sure you’ll enjoy it as well.

When I saw the Rick Beato video pop up on my suggested list some months back, with the title “the most beautiful song I know” I immediately thought of September 15th. It has been burned into my heart and soul ever since I bought this album on vinyl when it was released, my first foray into the Metheny/Mays world. The entire album is amazing, and Nana Vasconcelos is the first voice I still associate with Metheny and Mays to this day.
When I watched Beato’s video, I honestly couldn’t believe it was September 15th he was referring to, but at the same time not surprised at all. It’s just that after all these years so few people I know have a clue about the incredible, emotional beauty of this song.
I have so much more to say about this album, including my thoughts on the title track, but I’ll revisit this when you guys react to that track. It’s unique, and ethereal, unlike almost anything else you’ve heard, a sonic journey that tells a story of nature’s destructive power and humanity’s response and the rebirth of hope and the human spirit. That’s my take, based on one of the most powerful storms and tornado that devastated Wichita Falls, Texas a few years before this recording. I remember all the communication lines were gone and early responses were by ham radio operators. Wichita Falls was leveled, but it rose from the depths to be reborn again. To me, that’s what the title track’s story is.
