First saw Midge in ‘74 with Slik. Saw him again a few years ago as a solo artist and he is an excellent performer. There were some other big names on the bill but when they announced Midge and he walked on, the whole place sat up a bit straighter and the atmosphere went up more than a few notches.

In Canada my radio station manager pulled me up in '91 for playing Cold, Cold Heart twice an hour. I told him, "You don't understand anything, do you?"

I don't have many heroes. Midge is one. We saw him on that tour in Manchester late in the year. If anything he has got better with age. A genuinely great person.

I saw Midge live in Bath back in November 2024 and before that I’d seen Ultravox on their Return to Eden tour at The Roundhouse in Camden. I never saw them when I was growing up as I was too young to go to shows, but seeing them later in life - was utterly brilliant.
Was such a joyous show. Same with the show in Bath and hearing everything from Fade to Grey to a bit of Lizzy. And Your Name Has Slipped My Mind Again”. Just beautifully done. If you saw that show, you’ll remember the light…
There was a huge energy on stage coming from Midge - phenomenal band too, the whole auditorium lifted.
Genius writer, lovely person and still the person that made me want to pick up a guitar and make music.

Great interview, think you covered everything historically! I saw him in Bath near where I live and thoroughly enjoyed it. What a song 'The Voice' is live, goes in my top drawer. Didn't know he lived in Eastfield in Glasgow, my railway connections take me there too, wonder if was aware of the loco shed there?! Excellent alround, thank you.

I don’t know who James is (Aussie here) but I personally thought James asked all the excellent right questions that I’ve never heard asked about/to Midge.
    5star interview James.
As for Midge….I’ve been a fan since Sleepwalk came out and also Visage - Fade to Grey a few months later.

Massive fan of both versions of Ultravox. The Foxx era, and the Ure era. A highly underrated band, who attracted unfair criticism in their heyday. Punks disliked them for being too arty. PostPunks disliked them for not being arty enough. And the New Romantics saw them, as too old. Musical tribalism. You can’t beat it.

A very interesting and entertaining interview. I know it's not O'Brien's brief, but I feel sometimes that he could dig a bit deeper and that he too often revels in his own thoughts, which is fine for the radio show but not an interview. Unless I'm wrong! Which I probably am.

One of the most depressing socialists in the world interviews a "working-class kid" who literally made it from the bottom to "rock legend" status through the fruits of his labour, i.e. capitalism. Oh the irony. (Nothing against Ure, I just don't like O'Brian the angry socialist).
