    As an aside:
    Another early work that was very influential on future sci fi and included space marines was the books of EE Smith, specifically the Skylark and the Lensman series.
    The "universe" had very early examples of power armored superhumans wielding ridiculous firepower, is the trope founder for "the Lensman arms race", fleets thrashing each other in such large numbers as to make Michael Bay blush at the shear amount of explosions, and is pretty much the precursor to star wars in superweapons and several tropes.
    Ancient aliens with hyper advanced super tech having a huge war in the heavens before man even existed, guys that the green lantern corps is so much of a knock off that the GLC creators had to swear they'd never heard of the books and ham fisted testosterone that would make the cheesiest of black library authors go "hey at least I'm not that bad".

Still, I like the fact that you included a pic of the Marines at the start of your vid, thank you. Also, for transparency, I have never done that, and you know the that I am alluding to, in front of any commander...

  • @althesilly

    Marines have a couple of inherent forces that the nature of the job imprint on any force that does what Marines do. The primary one we need to think about is that they come from the ship. By this, they will always have a very limited number and limited supplies as marines will be deployed to areas away from local support.
    This means that Marines will tend towards both higher levels of professionalism and efficient utilization of resources. This means that a future space marine force will very likely use some form of power armor.
    But the real reason they are called space marines. Space is cool and the Marines have the best marketing and lobbying of all the branches of the military. They even have the best song in the US.

    Just got flashback to my childhood here in Czech Republic. I partially remember watching some old school scifi with some kind of space marine, but they've called them "vesmírný námořník" which is more like "space sailor" than "space marine" even tho we have translation for marine. Alright "space sailor" still sounds pretty good if the word "námořník" didn't came from "na moři" which means "on sea". Its just 2x as stupid.

      Wow! I owned a copy ( purchased from a Kay Bee toy store circa 1991 for the low low price of $5.) it was a pen and paper RPG about a Russian/Soviet invasion of the US. Obviously inspired by Red Dawn and the collective jingoism of the Regan era 1980s. I sold it to a friend for the $5 bucks I spent on it a few years later. It didn’t age well much past The fall of the Berlin Wall (hence the low price). I wish I had kept it because it was/is a curious artifact. Didn’t know there was a White Dwarf controversy. Would be curious to know more details.....

    • @MasterShake9000
      @MasterShake9000 3 роки тому +11

      @@loadeddice4696 The Price of Freedom I’m referring to is basically a Red Dawn rip off where the Soviets invade the US and you play as freedom fighters.
      White Dwarf did a review. Basically it was an okay game with a laughable premise. In subsequent issues’ letter columns, a number of British readers piled on about how jingoistic the game is and tastelessly presents Russians as godless commie thugs. In the process they also basically insult Americans as ignorant and xenophobic, and also take some shots at Reagan too. This then leads to some Americans responding back.

    one thing you missed about marines is that they're often elite units in the real world. the royal marines commandos (the world's first special forces unit), navy s.e.a.l.s, s.b.s. etc are all special forces that started out as naval infantry, so the idea of space marines being the best of the best is also tied to their name. the adeptus astartes are a combined-arms force (combat ready in air/space, land & sea) so very similar to the united states marines of the real world. if they were purely marines they wouldn't commit hundreds of troops to battle or field armoured divisions and the like, they'd much more closely resemble the colonial marines of aliens.
    speaking of which, i wouldn't call the soldiers in starship troopers or aliens "space marines", although i guess technically they are. the colonial marines do fit the real-world u.s.m.c. very well though
